here is a buzz of excitement as Elm Park School prepares for its Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Principal Trish Plowright says that deputy principal Belinda Johnston, who is orchestrating the 50-year celebratory event on October 28, has been sieving through thousands of old photographs in school albums.

Discovering quaint pictures from the time the school was first built in 1967, Ms Johnston has been posting them on the school Facebook page.

“The history of our school was lost over the years which is why the jubilee organising committee has been trying to piece it together,” says Ms Johnston.

They struck gold as they connected with the first deputy principal of the school Des Jack, now 90, who filled in some blanks with names and details.

They unearthed priceless nuggets about the second principal of the school, Harry Sprosen. The story goes that he trucked an entire school hall from Salvation Army and moved it onto the school site.

“He even cut it into half and built a new section inbetween so that they could extend the hall. The hall is named after him and is known as Harry’s Hall,” she says.

The school has managed to track Mr Sprosen’s son who will be attending the celebrations.

Son of the founding principal of the school Ivan Kurtovich will also be there.

The opening of the school swimming pool in 1975 is another milestone in the school’s 50-year old journey.

While the swimming pool is still in use, Mrs Plowright says it is expensive to maintain.

The celebration begins with an opening ceremony followed by former principals raising the school flag.

All guests will be gifted a flax flower made by school teachers along with a goody bag.

There will be cake cutting, choir singing, ongoing multicultural performances and the ceremony of burying a time capsule that every class is currently working on.

“Just so that when it is opened in 25 years, it will give the students an idea of what our school was like,” she says.

There will also be a planting of an Elm tree.

“It will be the first Elm tree in Elm Park School which used to be known as Pakuranga School No 5 when it opened in February 1967,” says Mrs Plowright.

The school expects a turnout of around 200 people.

With 40-plus nationalities in the school, there is a lot more emphasis on culture these days says Mrs Plowright.

The other focus is on maintaining an old site (the school still has a 1967 building) while revamping the old school.

Circus Day creates awareness on the danger of lighting fires

Mellons Bay residents are calling for action to be taken after a high speed crash, one of three in little over a week.

3 crashes, 8 days ■ BY THERESE HENKIN A car carrying three teen boys which lost control along Mellons Bay Road last week narrowly missed pedestrians and wrote off two cars.

Some Mellons Bay Road residents say frustration and fear for pedestrian safety is at an all-time high following the crash which took place at around 8.15pm on Tuesday October 3.

This is one of three crashes on Mellons Bay Road in eight days, with a collision just days before, and a suspected drink driving accident on Saturday night.

In Tuesday’s crash the driver spun out into a parked car, which was thrown airborne into a power pole, before the vehicle hit another parked car further down the street.

There were no serious injuries, but five pedestrians witnessed the crash.

Police and emergency services responded to the accident.

The incident has rattled the street’s residents who believe traffic-calming measures are urgently needed.

“We didn’t see the car, but you just knew there was an accident about to happen because all we heard was a car screeching down the road,” says Bev Mallowes who witnessed the second crash.

“A friend and I had just walked out of my son David’s driveway, and we were standing on the footpath chatting. My car was right in front of us, and Jenny’s car was about two parks down.

“Instinct told us to run, and we did. We were terrified because you know that no matter how fast you run, you don’t know where the car is going to end up so you just have to run and hope for the best,” she says.

Bev’s son, David Mallowes, says Tuesday’s accident is one of a growing number of speed-related incidents along Mellons Bay Road in recent months.

“Just last week there was a dramatic collision on the corner of Mellons Bay Road and Beach Road, and I know of several other cars that have spun out at that very corner in the last few months,” he says.

“On an afternoon three months ago, two cars racing down Mellons Bay Rd past the school ricocheted off each other with one taking out a pole and transformer.”

He says residents are also concerned for their safety after two near misses of pedestrians went unreported in the past two months.

“We can’t wait until someone gets seriously hurt before we do some-

thing. What if one of these crashes happened when kids were walking home from school?” he says.

The community is rallying behind Mr Mallowes as he readies himself to form a petition to present to the Howick Local Board, Auckland Council and Auckland Transport.

“I have visited all five witnesses today, and every one of them as well as eight other neighbours wants some traffic calming introduced. I am amazed to get 100 per cent support so far,” he says.

Counties Manukau road policing manager Rod Honan says he is taking the Mellons Bay residents’ complaints seriously.

“I will get the intelligence group to have a look, and see what [accidents] have been reported in this area over time,” he says.

“We are all about safer communities together, reducing crime and reducing victimisation so if we find that there are increased numbers of cars speeding along that road, there are things we can do.

“It could be as simple as deploying a speed camera car to the area,” he says.

Mr Honan says Counties Manukau Police will be looking into reports of high-speed crashes and reckless driving in the area and start discussions about what can be done to tackle the problem.

Around 67 per cent of the fires are intentionally lit by children under the age of 17.

Most children light fires because they are curious or find it fascinating, says Janine Baker, centre manager of Active Explorers, Highbrook.

In order to raise funds for the Burns Support Group Charitable Trust that hosts a free children’s camp for burns victims from ages seven to 17 years, the Early Childhood Centre with 150 children and 35 staff orgainsed a three-day fundraiser with a Circus theme.

A bouncy castle took centre stage

as some of the staff members encouraged parents to try their hand at a variety of games like Hole in One and Ring the Bell made from recycled material.

Some of the fun activities for kids included face painting, baking biscuits with clown faces, creating lion masks out of plastic plates and making candyfloss.

Ms Baker says that Active Explorers which is located in the heart of the business hub in East Tamaki, hosted the Circus Day not only to raise funds for young burns victims but also to make children gently aware of the dangers of lighting a fire.

Chess championships underway at Waipuna The eighth Asian Seniors Chess Championships are underway at Waipuna Conference Centre.

The event runs all week before the prize giving on Sunday October 15.

The event is a highlight on the Asian chess calendar and has drawn big names such as Grandmaster Eugene Torre from the Phillipines, Australian Grandmaster Darryl Johansen and 15 times Pakistani National Chess champion Mahmood Lodhi.

Auckland Transport spokesperson Mark Hannan said the plan is still in the consultation phase of where the new and relocated stops will be.

Pre-loved books ready for new homes It’s a book lovers dream at the Howick RSA with a treasure trove of secondhand books for sale at the annual Bookarama.

Now in its 17th year, Bookarama, hosted by The Rotary Club of Howick, is the club’s biggest fundraising event of the year, bursting with books ready to go to new homes.

Dozens of volunteers have spent hours sorting through tens of thousands of books, donated from the overflowing bookcases of Howick residents who are eager to see the books they no longer read go to new owners.

Book collectors have until Sunday October 15 to head down to the Howick RSA and stock up on books, puzzles and games.

“The response this year has been huge, and people have really been getting behind the fundraiser,” says Rob Mouncey of Howick Rotary.

“It gives the whole community a chance to get together, recycle their books and replenish their library, knowing that all the proceeds will go to supporting various community projects.”

In past years the Bookarama has raised more than $30,000 for the community, Mouncey says he hopes this year will be no exception.

He says there will be no shortage of happy bookworms with many of the books costing no more than a gold coin.

Mouncey says Rotary Club volunteers have been hard at work for months to make this event unforgettable for booklovers.

“We are always blown away by the turnout at Bookarama each year, and it’s good to see the residents of How-

He said AT had received feedback from All Saints Church and would be taken into consideration.

arking in Howick could be about to get a whole lot harder thanks to new plans from Auckland Transport (AT).

A bus network overhaul is in the works for east Auckland which will include changes to bus routes, route numbers, timetables and buses.

AT claims the network will bring more services – especially between 7am and 7pm – seven days a week along with buses every 15 minutes between Howick and Botany.

Part of that plan includes the creation of a number of new bus stops around the city, one of which is planned to fall on Howick’s Cook St, outside All Saints Church.

That would come at the cost of a confirmed seven car parks – parks that Howick simply can’t afford to lose, says Howick Local Board member Adele White.

Ms White says while the improvement of public transport in the area is long overdue, the potential loss of parking spaces in the Howick region “could be disastrous.”

“The seven spaces in Cook St are all well used, particularly by the elderly to access All Saints Church, clients of nearby medical and dental practices and those supporting retailers and restaurants across the road,” she said.

He had asked his congregation to raise their concerns and he had in turn passed those onto Auckland Transport.

Mr Coyle said his main concerns involved how the removal of parks would affect ease of access into the church for elderly citizens who could struggle with walking uphill.

He was also concerned about possible traffic impacts of the bus affecting cars exiting the roundabout.

Ms White suggested moving the proposed stop a short distance further up Cook St – a “flat and quite pleasant walk” away – something Mr Coyle said could “perhaps be a better idea”.

Mr Hannan said discussions are due to be held with the Howick Local Board.

Local woodcarver Jane Allnatt has won at the National Woodskills Competition. The competition is the most widely recognised woodfest in New Zealand. Jane won the Open Carving section with her piece ‘The Tree of Life’. Jane is self-taught and has won approximately 20 national awards at the Woodskills competition since her debut in 1996.

didn’t want to live next to my parents, but I bought it and my parents got their campervan.”

After Kevin and Roswyn married and lived in Moore Street for two years, they decided to build on the plot of land they owned in Vincent Street.

“Forty eight years later, this is the only house we have ever owned,” he says.

“And for all its flaws, it’s worked for us,” Roswyn adds.

But Roswyn reckons it’s not the house they will miss but the people of Howick.

“The neighbourhood children who spent their early years playing here with our son and daughter, the short walks into Howick

that would take over an hour because every few steps there would be someone to stop and chat too,” she says are the things she will miss most.

“But you get to a stage where the land is too big and the stairs are too much.”

So the pair will be packing up the big house and moving to Pokeno to be closer to their daughter in a house that is easier to maintain.

“We are looking forward to a new chapter in our new home.

We can make some new friends, and share our new adventure with our old friends,” she says.

“I will miss the bloody storage though,” Kevin laughs.

lot has changed on Vincent Street in the last 73 years, but one of its residents has remained the same.

Kevin Glenny has lived here most of his life, watching the street transform from two secluded farmhouses along a single gravel road, to the buzzing street it is today.

And after all these years, 75-year-old Kevin and his wife Roswyn are waving goodbye to Howick. Kevin was just two-yearsold when his father swapped their small St Heliers home for the three-acre property.

An old black and white home movie shows Kevin at six-yearsold running around the farm, back then a big stretch of open land. A classic old farm house can be seen in the distance, surrounded by fields filled with cows and chooks.

“Hard to believe this is what it used to look like, eh?” Kevin laughs.

In 1954 the land was subdivided. “My father wanted to buy a caravan for £1000, and this section was the last section to go,” he says gesturing to the red brick house he now lives in.

“It was a sod of a section with deep gullies and steep slopes.

“The zone provides for the greatest density, height and scale of development in all of the residential zones. Residential complexes can be built up to seven-storey high depending on the scale of the surrounding environment.”

olice officers showed off some high energy dance moves at a fundraiser at the weekend, much to the delight of around 200 people.

The Diwali Fundraiser was hosted by the Rotary Club of Somerville at the Bucklands and Eastern Beaches Memorial Hall on Saturday evening.

There was a real buzz as the police instantly connected with the audience who were both impressed and amazed as the officers performed a foot-tapping, traditional Indian folk dance with great élan.

The Bhangra dance that hails from the state of Punjab in India is performed during festive occasions.

Contributing their bit to the service organisation, the police added a special sparkle to the Rotary Diwali celebration.

Talking about the Police dancing troupe, Sergeant Gurpret Arora, District Ethnic Service coordinator Counties Manukau, said the diverse police dance troupe thought it was a nice way to engage with the community.

Another highlight of the evening was an Indian Bridal Fashion Show that showcased an array of

exquisite ensembles in a range of stunning colours.

The beautiful mix of trousseau designs ranged from traditional to contemporary and opulent.

Adding to the fun factor were models escorting Rotarians to the catwalk in the final sequence of the fashion show. A pleasant surprise was Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross and his wife Lucy sportingly doing the catwalk on the invitation of the models.

An auction conducted by Alan Owens, manager of Pakuranga Harcourts, kept the tempo of the evening upbeat, while the delicious food that was generously sponsored appealed to everyone’s taste-buds.

The beautifully-orchestrated evening in the season of giving and sharing was organised by past president of the Rotary Club of Somerville Vinod Sareen and past Rotary District Governor Dr Philly Karani along with members of the vibrant Rotary Club of Somerville that meets at the Howick Club every Wednesday evening.

The idea of a fundraiser took seed when Rajesh Gupta, visiting president from Rotary Club of Poona, asked if they could support a major project.

Rotary Clubs in the area was in aid of contributing funds towards a water harvesting and conservation project in a tribal village in District Pune, India, as well as other Rotary projects in New Zealand.

Mr Sareen said he was overwhelmed with people’s selfless service and generosity of spirit.

“It’s amazing how Rotary enables us to not only reach out to a range of communities in New Zealand but also overseas,” he said.

“This Rotary International project is in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Poona Downtown and Rotary Club of Somerville., along with the help of Rotary Districts 9920 and 3131 as well as the Rotary Foundation.”

Fruit garden, archway unveiled at local college ■■By Therese Henkin

A

very special blessing took place at Howick College’s environmental fruit garden recently.

Howick College’s Buildability team unveiled the walk-through entrance they had built as part of the BTICO Buildability challenge.

The archway is beautifully decorated with intricate Maori wood carvings of the North and South Island and carefully crafted native New Zealand birds.

The team worked alongside local Iwi to ensure the carvings were accurately portrayed, says head teacher Willem DuToit.

“The Maori culture is prominent in our school community and it’s important to our students and teachers, so we wanted to create something which celebrated that,” he says.

“The students also wanted to build something that served as a reminder to protect our environment.”

Students, teachers and kaumatua gathered near the garden area to witness the unveiling.

officially open the garden.

The project was made in collaboration with the schools environmental group who wanted features to enhance their fruit tree forest.

A bridge and a pergola with a swing were also built for the students to enjoy.

The team competed against 14 schools from across the country to build something that would add value to their school community.

This year the Challenge was redesigned to allow students to work on an approved project of their choice.

Throughout the Challenge, stu-

dents had to consider how their project will make a difference to their community.

“Howick College have obviously given a lot of thought to how their skills could make a difference to their school, and they have worked hard to achieve a really professional result,” says BCITO Chief Executive Warwick Quinn.

The community rallied behind them and their series of garden features received the most votes in the People’s Choice Award.

The team will receive a $300 ‘Team Shout’ from their BCITO Skills Broker and a framed certificate.

rue rugby fans would have thrilled to the drama of Sunday’s tough Cape Town test won 25-24 by the All Blacks against a pugnacious South African team that bore no relation to that thrashed 57-0 at Albany a fortnight earlier.

Seldom is champion hooker Dane Coles bettered. However in this epic he was no match for dynamic Malcolm Marx who ran like a rampant rhino and exhibited tenacity and technique in consistently winning ball from the breakdowns.

Coach Steve Hansen’s “flea in a bottle” description of McKenzie is a fair summary of a 22-year-old who takes audacious risks but, like Beauden Barrett, is a freakish gamebreaker.

Fittingly, it was McKenzie’s lightning acceleration that reaped the winning try although the magnificent Marx replied with the final one for the hosts.

An even younger man is 20-year-old, 102kg wing Rieko Ioane who has emerged as another prolific try-scorer who has showcased the backline depth New Zealand possesses.

With the All Blacks happy to

settle for a one-point win, this was a fair dinkum, heart and soul sporting contest in which there were no losers.

Although it is an oft used phase I detest, rugby was the winner and it was great to see South African pride restored to its former glory.

The Boks have had their detractors and deservedly so judged on results since the 2015 World Cup. But let’s not forget the All Blacks had to battle hard for a 20-18 semifinal win against them before their classy 34-17 final against the Aussies.

While it was good to see Sonny Bill Williams defend strongly and run hard and straight, he has been given

several chances this season to demonstrate his once magical ball distribution and has failed to deliver.

Compare that to the power game of Ngani Laumape that brought him 15 Super Rugby tries this season, but was rarely seen in the black jersey.

One of the success stories of 2016 was the cohesive midfield partnership of Ryan Crotty and Anton LienertBrown which surpassed that of Williams and Crotty.

It was the second experience at Worlds for 17-yearold Whitburn, who first went as a 15-year-old but says that was more “for the experience” rather than competition.

This time he went for the win – and he was “pretty happy” to achieve it.

Whitburn says he’s been doing triathlons for around six years now and is happy to see the hard work pay off.

“Leading up to worlds I was training three times a day for 20 plus hours a week,” he says.

“It’s really unbelievable – sort of seven years of week all coming to fruition. I was

so stoked when the results came out – it’s amazing.”

While currently on a short break to recover from his recent success, the hard work is set to continue as Whitburn plans to complete a gruelling half Ironman in January. “[It] certainly feels good to have a break but next week it’s back to work.”

Heimgartner and Miles claim Bathurst round honours

annemora’s Andre Heimgartner dominated the final race of Porsche Carrera Cup Australia’s penultimate 2017 event at Mount Panorama to claim the round victory, while Tim Miles capped a successful Bathurst weekend with a TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge clean sweep.

After placing third and first in the opening two races, Heimgartner charged to the lead at the start of Sunday’s race three and quickly established a strong race lead. The New Zealander continued his record-setting pace to the chequered flag to ultimately claim a six-second victory over Alex Davison in second, while Heimgartner also eclipsed Matt Campbell’s 2015 race lap record with a time of 2:07.1820 on the secondto-last lap.

“Getting the round win at Bathurst is always pretty good. The race start was good and I managed to get into the lead at the first corner and, from there, I just put my head down,” said Heimgartner.

“The car was amazing, it was straight the whole race and I didn’t have to push too hard and got the lap record as well. Overall, the weekend couldn’t have gone much better, apart from the first race.”

Miles was the class of the TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge in all three races, including Sunday’s final race of the weekend. Miles placed 12th outright and was the lead Challenge entry to the finish, completing his Bathurst clean

sweep of race wins.

Meanwhile, TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge takes a 62 point lead into the final round of the season over Heimgartner, with Alex Davison a further 30 points behind.

Porsche Carrera Cup Australia will head to the streets of Surfers Paradise for the final round of the season in two weeks time, which will also be the final round in which the first generation 991 series 911 GT3 Cup cars will be used in the one-make championship.

Howick Pakuranga wins season’s first match The Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premiers have begun the season strongly with a nine wicket win against Birkenhead who was dismissed for 93 in their season opener.

Birkenhead won the toss at Lloyd Elsmore and surprised everybody by electing to bat first early. This appeared to be a good decision as the wicket seemed to hold few terrors for the Birkenhead opening pair who raced through to 20 in only four overs.

However Danru Ferns made a double break through and apart from a stand of 40 runs for the fifth wicket the visitors resistance crumbled in the face of accurate HPCC bowling. Matt McEwan took the middle out the innings with 3/19 and Rudi Botadra followed up with 3/16. Jamie Brown, back from a year in Christchurch and a yard quicker in pace took 1/11 of his six overs.
