Aman Varma, a former Pakuranga College student, understands that it is not unusual for kids his age to be technology junkies—even as there exists a yawning gap between an iPhone generation and seniors trying to cope with fast-paced technology to keep up with their grandchildren and the rest of world.

Wanting to help, the computer science major at the University of Auckland has been working on an iPhone guide for the last four years.

“It was tough as we had to agree to the motion,” says Ryan. Another time they put all their oratory and analytical skills to test was when they had to negate the motion: ‘Implementing compulsory vaccine regulation’.

“It’s something we don’t personally agree with but had to argue otherwise, which wasn’t easy at all,” says Akira.

What matters though is at the end of the challenging debating rounds, the trio not only won the championship but each of them won the top three Speakers Award as well.

last year they were so close to winning but lost the final round. “We were just one debate away. This year we were very determined to win the cup. We prepared ourselves by enrolling for the debating acceleration programme at Auckland University and also participated at a debating tournament in Lynfield.”

As luck would have it, the motion for the final round was: ‘This house regrets schools teaching the idea that effort and participation is more important than winning’.

“We’ve grown a lot as a team and now I find it’s so much easier for us to understand the points of clash.”

Having debated as a team for around five years, they say they are very comfortable with each other, enough to criticise one another when they think they have not done well enough.

In 2015, the Times published an article on Aman with a group of students taking second place in the regional finals of the Lions Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme. The Year 13 team at Pakuranga College was involved with the idea of a smartphone guide for seniors.

After the article was published in the Times the young business enterprise group received a number of queries from individuals and retirement villages showing a keen interest in the guide. “We found a real disconnect between seniors and technology and decided to create viable solutions for this problem,” says Aman.

“After I finished college, I decided to continue writing the book with the hope that someday senior citizens will

benefit out of it. I checked with my team mates if they were ok with me taking the project to the next level and they were fine it. ” The iGuide is designed with the goal of empowering senior citizens by helping them confidently utilise their iPhones. It covers 10 essential iPhone apps including settings, contacts, messages, phone, mail (email), Safari (internet), and how to use the camera, sharing photos and making an album, using the App Store to download apps and more.

Aman, who has invested a lot into the book, says it has been a huge learning curve in terms of the business aspect of publishing. Now, the enterprising university student has not only managed to publish 1000 books but also has the interest of retirement villages.

Weatherproof atrium brings vibrant, new look to Botany Town Centre T

Minister and Kiwi pay visit to Cockle Bay School Eugenie Sage, the Minister of Conservation and Land Information, has been spreading the message of conservation with a local school.

She recently visited Cockle Bay School in conjunction with Squawk Squad’s Digital Environmental Education Programme.

Squawk Squad is a social enterprise that combines technology with conservation and education to help save New Zealand’s native birds. It allows New Zealanders to take part in a predator-free New Zealand by sponsoring high-tech traps towards conservation pro-

jects around the country.

The programme is now in its third year, and the students of Cockle Bay School have embraced its principles which aim to educate tamariki on New Zealand’s environmental issues such as pest and predator eradication, conservation of New Zealand Birds of Prey and the Whio, Kauri dieback, marine ecology, kaitiakitanga and climate change.

The school has embarked on an ‘Enviro school’s journey’ which includes students being involved in reducing waste, new native plantings, solar panels and a

swimming pool run from tank water. Ms Sage was treated to an excellent speech from room five’s Abbie, who spoke eloquently about the dangers of plastic getting into the sea, pollution from cars, reducing methane with nude food lunchboxes and how today’s children are entrusted with the guardianship of the environment, and it’s preservation for future generations.

Wang wins nationals Sarina Wang of Saint Kentigern College took first place at the 2019 National Sport Stacking Championships in Whanganui on Saturday where several records were potentially broken.

Wang was the best of the top five experienced overall winners.

There were more than 40 competitors at the tournament who ranged from age 9-58 and came from Whanganui, Wellington, Marton (Rangitikei) and Auckland. Nine Novice stackers also competed.

The Dinosaurs’ stomp T

hose who thought dinosaurs were extinct, were in for a shock as hundreds of dinosaurs descended onto the grounds of Owairoa Primary School on Monday, celebrating the opening of this year’s Book Week.

The visiting dinosaurs not only included Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus and Diplodocus but also a huge variety of other dinosaurs; some with over 1000 teeth, dinosaurs who could swim, eat meat and plants and those that waved their long, strong scaly tails, narrowly missing the gathered spectators.

A group of palaeontologists were on site digging for fossils and a number of dinosaur eggs were uncovered from the deep, sandy fossil pits. The eggs were carefully distributed to each classroom and will be observed as they hatch out over the next week or so.

Owairoa Primary School students participated in the Grand Parade with over 900 marching dinosaurs and then gathered together to give a huge dinosaur roar that exceeded 180 decibels!

The opening celebration concluded with a huge Dinosaur Stomp to dinosaur music.

Students and their families then visited the Book Fair in the school hall to choose and purchase from a wide range of books. The Book Fair is open all this week.

Balance needed in gun law reforms T

his week the Parliament began debating the second round of the Government’s proposed changes to New Zealand’s gun laws.

These changes were drafted following the horrific terror attack at two Christchurch mosques on March 15 that resulted in the deaths of 51 Kiwi Muslims and a large number of injuries.

The first round of changes to our gun laws received overwhelming support in the Parliament and came into force earlier this year.

They included a ban on military-

style semi-automatic firearms and assault rifles, certain firearm parts, magazines and ammunition and a gun buy-back scheme.

It’s too soon to judge the longterm success of the buy-back but more than 15,000 firearms have been handed in so far.

Reducing the number of the types of firearms used in the Christchurch attack that are in circulation will hopefully lower the risk of these guns falling into the wrong hands.

I struggle to see a place in our society for military-style weapons of war that can inflict horrific carnage

in such a short space of time.

The second round of the proposed gun law changes had its first reading in the Parliament on Tuesday.

It includes the creation of a firearms registry, updated and new offences and penalties for gunrelated crimes and increased oversight on firearm importation and sales.

The length of validity of firearms licences would be reduced from 10 years to five and a licensing regime would be created for shooting clubs and ranges.

Any changes to our gun laws

must balance the rights of law-abiding gun owners with the need to increase public safety.

Getting guns out of the hands of those who would misuse them, such as criminals and gang members, should be the priority.

That’s especially the case given about 18,200 crimes involving firearms were committed in New Zealand between 2015 and 2018.

The police should be given greater powers to crack down on armed criminals to better protect the public and remove dangerous firearms from the black market.

China in his hand – Brown claims back-to-back Tri-Factor win A day after the All Blacks opened their Rugby World Cup campaign, 12-time New Zealand Ironman champion Cameron Brown, who performed the haka at the pre-race press conference, clinched a comfortable win at the inaugural TRI-Factor (TF) World Championship 2019 in Quzhou, China.

In front of thousands of excited Chinese supporters, crowd favourite Brown – from Dannemora - won the TF Enduro (Elite) triathlon which consists of a 1.5km swim, 80km cycle and 20km run in 3:25:40 to take home the title. The 47-year-old exited the swim

55 seconds behind Irishman Colin O’Shea, but caught O’Shea early in the cycling leg and never looked back O’Shea (3:41:40) eventually finished 16 minutes behind Brown while Rondina Leonard (3:45:40) of the Philippines was a further four minutes back in third position.

“The city of Quzhou really got behind the race and the atmosphere on the entire race course was amazing,” said Brown who also won TF Quzhou in 2017.

“The marshalls and volunteers were fantastic and I’m not surprised

that the race was sold-out. More and more people are learning about this race and will want to come to visit Quzhou. The start-finish line is pretty special and it’s not every day you get to finish in front of an ancient citygate as magnificient as Shui Ting Men. I really enjoy the mountains and scenery here and I’ll definitely come back here and try for a threepeat”.

Tri-Factor Quzhou China is the season finale to the TRI-Factor Asia Series that included stopovers in Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines and China.

Petition launched to save MIT N

ational MP’s Simeon Brown and Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi are today launching a petition to help save Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) from the Government’s “radical proposal” to merge all polytechs across New Zealand into one nationwide megapolytechnic.

Under the Government’s proposals, every aspect of the vocational education sector is under attack, they said in a media statement.

“Apprentices are being sent back to polytechnics, polytechnics are being amalgamated into legacy campuses, jobs are being lost, cash and community assets will be centrally controlled, and regional autonomy is being stripped away,” they said.

“What this means locally is that MIT will be merged into one nationwide mega-polytech

I have 15 years of experience in community engagement and youth empowerment and have conducted all my work with integrity, compassion, respect and inclusivity.

I also chair an active youth group based in east Auckland and officially represent a humanitarian global organisation. I am also the co-founder of a nationwide campaign called YouAreUS which was formed in the wake of March 15 incident to bring more awareness, understanding and aroha between people of all walks and faiths.

The reforms will also mean that cash reserves held by MIT will be snatched up by the new mega-polytechnic which will then decide how these funds are used in our region, they said.

“These changes will be disastrous for regional education and apprenticeships however the Government is pushing

ahead with ideology over what is best for students and regional New Zealand.”

They continued: “Today we are launching a petition which urges the Government to not go ahead with merging MIT into the nationwide mega-polytech and to retain local decision making and assets in the community.

We urge locals to sign this petition and stand with National as we seek to ensure we retain local autonomy so that MIT can make decisions for our regional skill needs.
