Sharon Stewart has returned to Auckland Council with a whopping 19,320 votes.

Hardly had the results been announced when Sharon was out and about trying to solve problems in the community.

“Nothing ever stops,” she says. “I haven’t been sworn in as yet but have started visiting homes of people who have asked for help.

It’s what you do the whole time that counts and not just during election time. You have to be out and about looking at helping solve problems and not just ask residents to call the council call centre if they have a problem.”

Katrina celebrated the win with fellow C&R Communities and Residents colleagues at the Auckland regional event and later “had a lovely dinner with my close family and friends at my home in Pakuranga.”

“I will continue to challenge council costs as I always have and I think we need more collaboration between councillors and board members in the overall interest of the community and in getting things done for Howick, Pakuranga and Botany.”

Olympic medallist Bruce says that he is really happy to have been given a chance to be involved.

“I really am hoping to effect positive change. I was close last time (Local Elections 2016) with pretty much no effort. I really thought I had a good chance and for that I thank all those who put their trust in me,” he says.

“I’m really pleased I ran with Steve Udy and Wayne Huang. I’m sad they didn’t get over the line.

They have been really supportive as has (Councillor) Sharon Stewart.

“I’m looking forward to working with her and Paul Young on the

council. I feel like everybody has been really supportive so far, and been very helpful.”

Looking forward to DHB role Long-serving Howick Local Board member has been ousted by newcomer Bruce Kendall.

Naturally disappointed at losing his seat to someone with no political experience, Garry passed on his congratulations to all those elected and hoped they “put in enough effort (as he has) for the past six years”.

Boles would like to be acknowledged as someone who “spoke up when things were wrong” during his six-year tenure on the board. He will continue in his day job as a police officer within the media unit and focus upon his

role on the District Health Board.

Long serving board member Jim Donald also missed the cut for re-election. He has been approached for comment.

Tarnica Park lights up to counter crime Northpark residents will get the solarpowered light the Howick Local Board promised for Tarnica Park. The board has allocated up to $5000 to install a single sensor-driven light in the park, the scene of ongoing anti-social behaviour.

Board members received advice not to light the park and to instead spend $10,000 to investigate options and costings for lighting the park’s footpath, but agreed residents needed an immediate solution. Residents approached the board earlier this year concerned that neighbours avoided the park.

In August the board resolved to have a light over the playground, but staff warned a single light might displace bad behaviour to another area of the park and could encourage more activity around the playground.

Lighting the footpath and encouraging pedestrians to access the nearby Botany Town Centre via the park, particularly at night, was favoured.

Good lighting can reduce crime, but few Auckland parks and footpaths are lit because it can encourage people to go into isolated areas with poor visibility beyond the lit area.

Board members say while the advice from staff was sound and in keeping with approaches in other areas of the city, the residents had already suffered for some time.

Members had met concerned residents on site previously and believed a more timely resolution to the problem was needed.

otholes continue to plague the carpark adjacent to the Warehouse and Pak’nSave at Botany Town Centre.

The area, which is owned by Foodstuffs, has been in a state of disrepair for some time and bad sentiment is growing with locals who bring their families to shop.

Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has sent a letter to the CEOs of Foodstuffs, The Warehouse and the owner of Danske Mobler asking them to address the issue.

Foodstuffs was approached for comment and external relations manager Sue Hamilton said: “We’ve heard the complaints about the carpark at Pak’nSave Botany and other stores in the area. We are working with the body corporate to rectify this.

Meanwhile Pak’nSave owner operator Russ Wilkinson said: “As you will all know, we are doing some major works on the store and part of the refurbishment includes making big improvements to the carpark – such as more parking bays and trolley bays,” “On behalf of the team at Pak’nSave Botany, I would like to let the community know Pak’nSave is working hard to push the body corporate to take action and remedy the car park with much urgency.

“The store is currently undertaking some major refurbishment works and we very much want the car park fixed prior to the unveiling of the new look Pak’nSave in November.

“Our apologies for the inconvenience.

Please trust the Pak’nSave team are absolutely on the case and bear with us in the short term.”

mix of fresh and experienced faces to represent our community Last Saturday was the Local Government election, where we saw two Auckland Councillors and nine Howick Local Board members elected to represent our East Auckland community for the next three years.

Congratulations to Paul Young and Sharon Stewart, who return as our two local Councillors, to returning Local Board members Katrina Bungard, David Collings, John Spiller, Mike Turinsky, Adele White, Bob Wichman, and Peter Young, and a very special congratulations to our two first-time Board members Bo Burns and Bruce Kendall.

I also want to thank Garry Boles and Jim Donald, who were not reelected after serving as members on the Local Board for several terms each.

Garry served East Auckland as a member of the Local Board since 2013, and prior to that was a longserving community constable in the area.

Fortunately, Garry was elected to the Counties Manukau District Health Board so will continue to be involved locally on behalf of our community.

Jim has been a Howick Local Board member since the Auckland Council merger in 2010 and served for six years prior to that as a Manukau City Councillor, so has had a long record of public service in our community.

Thank you Garry and Jim, and my best wishes for the future.

I have enjoyed a close working relationship with our Councillors and Local Board members since my own election as the MP for Pakuranga in 2017, and I am looking forward to continuing that relationship going forward.

While new to the Board, Bo and Bruce are well known in our community for the work they have been involved in locally.

I am fortunate to call them both friends, and I know they’re keen to get stuck in.

They will work incredibly hard for East Auckland and bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the important work the Board does.

There are many challenges facing East Auckland, many of which our Councillors and Local Board members will have direct oversight on solving.

I believe strongly that once elected, we are all here to serve you, our constituents. It’s important we all work together, and not in opposition to one another, for the betterment of our community, and I know that is a value I share with all of those elected.

Lyon roars in the face of Luxon ■■BY JIM BIRCHALL

F

ormer Air New Zealand chief executive Chris Luxon entering the Botany candidate selection for the National Party does not faze local nominee Stephen Lyon – or sitting independent MP Jami-Lee Ross.

“If there is one thing I intend to get absolutely right, it is being of service to the people of Botany” says Lyon. He goes on to suggest that he has all the capability necessary to contribute to the National Party, and New Zealand at the highest level but for him it must start with service to his local electorate.

In addition to running a successful business Stephen has been an officer in the New Zealand Army, a advocate for the marine environment and leader in Cook Islands national and Pacific regional business organisations.

As previously reported, Lyon grew up in the area, completing all his schooling in east Auckland. Lyon says his experiences in Botany have “shaped him to be the person he is today, especially with regards to his abilities to empathise and communicate with our many cultures”.

Lyon is no stranger to a tough battle. He built a team that successfully advocated for the protection of sharks in all Cook Islands waters, opposed by a very aggressive Chinese lobby.

He attributes his success to his ability to get amongst the community and really understand what is important to the people, then communicate that to political leaders to affect change. Lyon has gone on to successfully advocate on many other national issues within the Cook Islands.

Back now in Botany, Lyon says of the selection process to find a National candidate to stand in the Botany Electorate in next year’s General Election: “I am thoroughly enjoying meeting the members of the National Party through the nomination process, listening to their concerns, and hearing about their history within the electorate.”

“Leadership starts with service, and being of service is exactly what I intend to do” At time of going to print, Agnes Loheni, list MP and National’s spokesperson for small business and Pacific people has intimated she is also running for the National nomination for Botany.

The Times has reached out Christopher Luxon for comment.

Meanwhile, rogue MP Ross, now an independent after a huge public fall-out with National leader Simon Bridges last year, said in a media statement he has always welcomed “a good, old-fashioned, grassroots election campaign”.

said. “I’ve spent 15 years serving our community, and I’m happy to put my local credentials up for local people to make a decision on.”

Ross said it was arrogant for National to believe they can fix their leadership problems “by parachuting someone in who will automatically win an electorate seat”.

“I’ve spent this year knocking on doors and asking constituents whether they want me to continue as their voice. The overwhelming response has been that they appreciate an experienced local person standing up for them,” he said.

“Botany is now the most marginal seat in the country. It looks very different on the ground than it does from the flight path overhead.

“While Botany people know they have in me someone who sits in the middle of both parties and will work with either side to advance local issues, others see themselves racing to Wellington to advance their own personal aspirations the day after an election. The voters in Botany are astute and will not be taken for granted in this way.”

ACCIDENT

Van smashes into car on Chapel Road Police were called at about 9.40am on Saturday to reports of a car crash involving two vehicles on Chapel Road. There were no reported injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the white car was hit by a green Hiace van which was later towed away by another vehicle.

Times Facebook comment suggested the accident was not an isolated case; “I live on this road and see this regularly. If you travel another few metres down Whitford Road you will see another car with the same damage! People treat this road like a race track often texting, or on cell phones and it is pretty annoying.”

The idea is a book swap, where customers can come into the centre and leave a book behind in exchange for another. The concept allows readers to share and recycle their books with other readers and in return find a new book of interest.

Kerrie Hughes, centre manager at Botany Town Centre says, “The book swap has been well received so far.

“We have seen customers here throughout the day, including students on laptops, couples reading to kids, mums and kids reading together and people drinking coffee.

“It’s been such a great ‘pause’ area in general.

I think there is something special about finding a book that has another reader’s journey within the page and our customers really appreciate this sentiment. Overall, the book swap is a great way to bring the community together and celebrate our love for books.”

Doomsday debate engages local schools E

very year since 1983 Pakuranga Rotary has hosted teams from local schools for a fiercely contested debate with the Holyoake Trophy as the prize.

Sponsored by Noel Holyoake, a past District Governor of District 9920, Pakuranga Rotary member and director of Holyoake Industries, the debate involves senior students from the three colleges in the district – Edgewater College, Pakuranga College and Saint Kentigern College with teams alternating to challenge the winner from the previous year.

Since 2018 the trophy had been held by Saint Kentigern College but the holders were hotly challenged by Pakuranga College at the recent Rotary meeting at Waipuna Convention Centre.

Teams do not receive the moot for the debate until noon on the day of the contest.

The 2019 topic had echoes of Stephen Hawking’s warning to the world in his last book If Robots Don’t Get Us, Climate Change Will.

The moot was “That AI presents a greater threat to mankind’s future than climate change”.

intelligence which didn’t share human values, caused massive unemployment and anarchy and which posed a more serious threat long-term to the world than the climate change issue which was solvable.

Ben Shepherd, William Feng, Ben Fraser and Chris Hodder (Teacher i/c) representing Saint Kentigern College and arguing in the negative, countered that the portrayal of the risks posed by AI was overhyped and unrealistic and that extreme weather will overwhelm us before cell phones overpower us.

This year the debate was adju-

dicated by Jeanette Roberts, with years of experience, Desiré Truter, acting head of English and teacher-in-charge of the debating team at Edgewater College and, for the first time, local MP Simeon Brown who is a member of Pakuranga Rotary Club.

In awarding the debate (and retention of the Holyoake Trophy) to St Kents, Simeon made reference to the quality of the debate and the passion exhibited by both teams.

There was certainly nothing artificial about the intelligence on display from our local college debating teams.

Meanwhile business confidence may have disappointed the Reserve Bank of NZ (RBNZ) since the August Monetary Policy Statement, but at least the housing market is moving in the expected direction.

“Regardless, a weaker outlook for growth means the RBNZ is likely to cut the OCR to 0.75 per cent in November, followed by another cut early next year,” Couchman said.

“Along with continued strong population growth, this should add further impetus to the housing market and housing-related investment. Recent policy moves that have targeted the investor side of the market should contain any exuberance though.

“We think the housing market will continue to strengthen heading into next year and we expect aggregated price gains to pick up towards 5-6 per cent year-on-year in 2020. This is expected to be driven by modest rises in Auckland, following over three years of either flat or falling prices.”

Meanwhile, the regions that have experienced significant house price appreciation in recent years are likely to see gains slow as the current rally in prices runs out of steam.

here were real signs of strength in New Zealand’s housing market in September according to the just released Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) data.

What’s more, strength was seen in Auckland’s market, a market that has been dragging headline indicators down.

Nationally, the 5896 sales recorded by REINZ were the strongest for a September month in three years. Seasonally adjusted, sales were largely flat in the month. The headline result for September was a combination of a seasonally adjusted 5.8 per cent month-on-month jump in Auckland sales, offset by falls elsewhere – particularly Waikato, the Bay of Plenty and Canterbury.

House prices in the month were stronger in almost all regions, with the REINZ house price index 1.4 per cent month-on-month up, taking annual house price appreciation to 3.6 per cent year-onyear, the strongest rate of growth seen since October last year.

Jeremy Couchman, senior Kiwibank economist said there was a favourable move in Auckland too, with prices up 1.6 per cent in the month. The worm looks to have turned in the Super City. Annual prices were only 0.8 per cent year-on-year lower, that’s far less depressing than the 4.3 per cent year-on-year fall seen back in April, and prices may start to lift on an annual basis in the coming months.

“There were consistent indicators of a tightening in housing market over September, Couchman said.

“For instance, seasonally adjusted median number of days to sell fell a full three days to 37.

This was driven by some decent falls in Auckland and Waikato.

“But to put this in perspective, the housing market is far from running hot. At 37, the median number of days is running only

Local dancer is a shooting star F

ormer Howick College student Jessica Toatoa began her dancing career when she was eight years old.

Now 21, she has compiled an impressive resume’ which includes dancing with the biggest names in music.

Recently, Jess attended an audition in Los Angeles, with the aim of joining Queen of Chinese-pop (C-Pop) ’s, World tour in 2020.

Six New Zealand dancers attended the audition, and Jessica was selected as one of sixteen successful dancers, to join the superstar on tour in Asia.

Rehearsals start in November for Jolin’s big, two-hour production that has dates in Taiwan and China starting New Years 2020 , followed a potential trip back to the USA and Hong Kong.

On the back of being chosen for the upcoming tour, Jessica has been signed to GTA (Go 2 talent) agency in LA, and choreographer Rudy Abreu has asked Jessica to assist him at conventions all over America for the Jump Dance Convention with Embodiment Dance Collective.

Rudy’s credits include choreographing for Jennifer Lopez, Derek and Julianne Hough, Bebe Rexha, Ben Platt, Camilla Cabello, Leona Lewis, Jacky Cheung, Inana and Little Mix.

Briana Woolliams was awarded the People’s Choice Winner of The Estuary Art and Ecology Award hosted by the Uxbridge Arts and Culture at the culmination of the exhibition in the Malcolm Smith Gallery.

First place was awarded to Mo Stewart whose personal artwork will feature in Malcolm Smith Gallery in October.

Briana’s art work Te Wai o Taiki is an illustrative work bringing together poetic text and textiles.

“Poetry was used as a form to consider the shifting ecologies of the estuary as a response to human urbanisation,” she says.

Briana was presented the award by Wally Rice and Marilyn Bakker of the Rice Family Partnership at Malcolm Smith Gallery.

The Estuary Art and Ecology Award brings focus to the plights and delights of the Tamaki Estuary and is now in its 13th year.

Briana also scooped a Merit award

along with Toni Hartill–second prize being awarded to Roma Anderson.

The award, which was judged this year by Dr Janine Randerson is supported by Gordon Harris and The Rice Family Partnership. The award to Briana was presented in the presence of her proud father and nana from whom her creative talents have been nurtured.

Wally said, “It was good to see so many creative entries well-supported by public votes which resulted in a tight contest amongst the participants. Congratulations to Briana Woolliams.

Two-day grand Taiwanese cultural feast on offer N

ew Zealand Taiwan Day will be held this weekend at Aotea Square in downtown Auckland.

This two-day multicultural event is estimated to attract tens of thousands of visitors from home and abroad.

The purpose of Taiwan Day is to introduce the beautiful and diverse culture of Taiwan, the Republic of China, to New Zealand and to promote both harmony between the communities as well as co-operation internationally.

New Zealand Taiwan Day has been successfully held over past the three years, and is packed with activities, including cultural and art exhibitions, Taiwanese cuisine, exquisite products, multicultural performances, free tour information, cultural experience activities, and Lucky draws.

Raffle draws three times a day offering great gifts, more than one hundred prizes, including five round-trip air tickets (three Auckland-Taipei return tickets) will be waiting to be won on October 19 and 20.

Classy backs give ABs winning edge D

espite losing two of their last three games against Ireland, the brilliant All Black backs should pave the way to a Rugby World Cup quarterfinal victory over the Irish in Japan on Saturday night.

However Ireland’s uncompromising forwards and Jonathan Sexton’s goal-kicking boot remain a threat should the defending champions lack discipline. The greatest fear for all eight quarter-finalists is a red card by referees who have been ordered to clamp down hard on head high tackles.

However it’s a pity they don’t police the offside rule against some teams that favour a rush defence that strangles enterprising back attack. Consequently, one of Richie Mo’unga’s smartest ploys is the cross kick or kick pass that wings Sevu Reece and George Bridge have converted into tries.

It was a shame Typhoon Hagibis forced the cancellation of the All Blacks match against Italy that robbed Brodie Retallick and Jack Goodhue of valuable game time following long injury-enforced breaks. But it is doubtful whether Goodhue would have got a start anyway given the strong form of midfielders Anton Lienert-Brown, Ryan Crotty and Sonny Bill Williams.

absence. In fact, Barrett is one of the most improved players in the squad and has fully justified his starting spot.

That comes at the cost of losing lineout height although captain Kieran Read remains a springheeled leaper who offers his locks strong support.

However Ireland’s front row could severely test the All Blacks muscle and technique and the Connor Murray/ Sexton halves combination has troubled New Zealand in the past.

Presumably swift passing Aaron Smith will start in the No 9 jersey ahead of the aggressive PJ Perenara and the speedy Brad Webber who has fully justified his selection as the third halfback.

With Mo’unga excelling at No 10 and the centres gelling nicely, Beauden Barrett is relishing the extra space afforded him at fullback where his pace is the ace that threatens the best defences.

The weather should be a major factor with the All Blacks wanting a firm track and not the humidity that has made the slippery ball so hard to handle.

Meanwhile, having scored seven tries in hammering Samoa 47-5, England will fancy their chances against an Australian team that hasn’t played to their potential thus far.

The English have big, strong forwards and first-five George Ford has ignited a backline that has size and pace.

As Six Nations champions, Warren Gatland’s Wales will fancy their chances against France although many-a-team has learned to their cost that the French should never be under-estimated no matter their previous form.

Certainly South Africa won’t take Japan lightly knowing they lost to them in pool play to set alight the 2015 Rugby World Cup. To their credit, the Springboks bounced back and only lost their semi-final to New Zealand 20-18 before the champions beat the Wallabies 34-17 in the final.

However, having beaten Ireland for starters this time and cementing their playoff place by comfortably accounting for Scotland, Japan are playing exciting rugby before their delirious fans. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer

rom small beginnings in 2000 in the old Wes Burns shop in Howick, transitioning through the Old Howick Library, Howick Intermediate School Hall, The RSA basement and now having just finished our most recent sale in the large Somerville Intermediate School Gym, The Rotary Club of Howick Bookarama continues to grow each year.

Bookarama is now recognised as one of Auckland’s leading book fairs with an amazing and extensive range of books. The new location at Somerville Intermediate proved to be most successful. The large, well-lit and roomy gym provided those coming to purchase books, puzzles and games a great selection from which to choose.

The ample car parking available on site meant easier access for those attending the book fair and an even easier task in taking the heavy purchases back to their cars.

The public attended in droves over the six days that Bookarama was open and around 30,000 books were sold. The quality of books provided by the public to Howick Rotary for sale improves every year and this year the quality was outstanding.

Those attending the sale commented on the well-laid out tables, with ample room between the rows allowing room to move about freely and to peruse the thousands of books on sale.

the early bird sale held on the first Tuesday evening, where - for a small door charge - the public can enter and have the pick of the best books on sale. This year it was pleasing to see a large increase in the number of local residents taking this opportunity to purchase those books. We would recommend in future years that more of our public take up this opportunity, as for the price of one book bought at retail price, they can obtain many books which may only have been read once and look as if this is the first time they have been opened.

Double-heartbreak for Heimgartner After impressing for the majority of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, disaster struck not once, but twice for Dannemora’s Andre Heimgartner in the closing stages of the race.

The 24-year old Melbournebased Kiwi was sharing the #7 Plus Fitness Nissan Altima for Kelly Racing with Bryce Fullwood at the weekend.

After fantastic performances by both drivers across the first threequarters of the race, Heimgartner was fourth on the road and in-sight of third position.

It was then on lap 146 that the first disaster struck – Heimgartner was inadvertently called to the pits needlessly when the radio channel was opened late.

“My engineer was trying to tell me ‘Winterbottom is going to pit now’ but the channel was opened late and I only heard ‘pit now’. I wasn’t supposed to pit. We were fuelled to the end and if that hadn’t happened, we should have ended up on the podium,” Heimgartner lamented after the race.

He rejoined in 12th position full of fervour and by the time the final laps were underway was charging to be back up to eighth position

Op-portunity lost: Cancer shop closing ■■BY JIM BIRCHALL The pre-loved clothing boutique operated by the Cancer Society in Rices Mall Howick, is set to close.

The store is popular with op-shoppers and forms part of a trio of charity shops in the arcade.

Paul Hayes, marketing and communications manager Cancer Society Auckland/Northland said the Cancer Society had reviewed its retail strategy earlier this year, considering among other options, expanding the number of Pre-loved Boutique stores across Auckland.

In a statement he said, “The Cancer Society Auckland/Northland never had the intention of owning one shop, Howick was always meant to be the precursor to expansion. After careful consideration and thorough evaluation CSAN is not going pursue a retail strategy. This decision will result in closing the existing shop in Howick at the end of the lease on Oct 31st, 2019.

It was then however that disaster struck a second time, with the #7 Nissan coming into heavy and race-ending contact with the wall at what is known as Forrest’s Elbow with three laps remaining in the race.

“It has been absolutely gutting,” Heimgartner said.

“We had a really strong day out there. Bryce started from 13th and we were into the top 10 by lap 23.

From there we worked our way up to fourth and in touch of the top three for the final quarter of the race.

“With the situation how it was for the cars in front of me, we should have finished on the podium. But as it happened, we ended up in the pits and then when it looked like I could possibly salvage a top five, I ended up in the wall.

“Heartbreaking is the only way to describe it.”

Heimgartner will next be ontrack with Kelly Racing and the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship for the second round of the Pirtek Enduro Cup, the Vodafone Gold Coast 600, across October 25-27.
