chools in east Auckland were yesterday bracing themselves for news of possible closures due to coronavirus which would impact not just tens of thousands of students and teachers, but parents as well. At the time of deadline the Ministry of Education was expected to make a statement amid growing fear of the potential spread of Covid-19. Most schools already have strict protocols for staff and students in place. The Times contacted several local schools. Not all responded to our requests for information. Owairoa Primary School principal Alan McIntyre told the Times they invested a huge amount of time and effort trying to keep everyone safe. “We’re determined “to be strong, act decisively and protect our students, staff and the parents.” “We are abiding by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health guidelines and expect to hear today (Monday) what we need to do in preparation for a possible school closure. Some of Owairoa’s initiatives include a concerted effort to have all staff and students to practice safe and hygienic practices. The school has also engaged a nurse to take student temperatures and sent home students with identified higher-than-normal temperatures. The school has enforced self-isolation for students from at-risk countries. They’ve also informed staff that they must wash their hands before entering the staffroom and purchased hand sanitiser, Dettol spray and antiseptic wet wipes for all classes. The school cleaners are also making an additional effort when cleaning

Luxon: Govt must reduce regulations C
hristopher Luxon, National Party candidate for the Botany electorate, has thrown down a challenge to the coalition government to cut regulation. At the Greater East Tamaki Business Association (Getba) breakfast held recently, Luxon addressed a sold-out audience of local business owners. He shared the approach and strategic thinking he used successfully leading Air New Zealand as CEO in both good and bad business cycles. He said world class businesses achieve superior commercial returns and continue to enhance the customer experience and develop a great internal culture year in-year out, over many decades. Luxon challenged all East Tamaki
businesses to do likewise and went on to share the frameworks he used to develop people, shape strategic thinking, and ensure quality execution. He went onto say that small medium enterprises (SMEs) make up 97 per cent of all Kiwi businesses and it is critical governments unleash this sector to raise economic productivity. “Compliance issues and burdens are a major concern to SMEs and the single largest barrier to growth,” he said. He championed smart regulation but felt the original intent of regulation often got lost in inefficient and unworkable processes, duplication and unnecessarily complex user interfaces.

“I challenge the government to clean-up, align and reduce regulation in order to give back `two days per month’ to small business owners and to also accelerate e-invoicing to enable a faster and less bureaucratic payment process,” said Luxon. He also acknowledged the mounting pressure and challenges on many small businesses in Botany due to coronavirus. “I’ve learnt that crises are great opportunities to sharpen up and focus on the management of a business. “But I would like to see the government quickly implement and help impacted businesses with a SME support package similar to the Christchurch Earthquake Support Subsidy,” he said.

esiree Morgan was shocked and stressed when she first discovered that she was carrying triplets. Going from having one to four children was a shocker says the mother-of-four. “I was thinking of all the expenses and how we’d cope,” she says of the time she learned she was pregnant with triplets. It was only after she met someone at Multiples Counties Manukau that she realised it was going to be ok. Multiples Counties Manukau is a volunteer-run organisation that supports families in their journey from expecting to raising multiples— families that have two, three or more babies at a time. President of the group for the last two years, Desiree says that the club provides a support system for parents with multiples by giving them free nappies, help sourcing premature clothing/bedding, providing support of a lactation consultant, as well as mother helpers to cope with post natal depression. They address diverse needs of families with multiples by working in partnership with community groups, health care providers and educators. The group recently celebrated Multiples Awareness Week with a picnic at the Botanical Gardens—
the theme being ‘share the journeystronger together’. “We think the awareness week is important because of the difficulties faced by families with multiples are often unknown,” says Desiree, mother to 16-year-old Cheyenne, Dante, Roxas (four-year-old twins) and Vincent Eason (two-year-old). Multiple births have higher rates of complications, birth defects, prematurity and difficulties with feeding. “Parents of multiples barely get a few hours’ sleep and each additional baby can lead to mental breakdown,” says Desiree. “Also there is often a financial burden involved.” Talking about the logistics of

feeding, clothing, sleeping patterns and bathing multiples, she says it is tricky and often babies experience less one-on-one time. “As a result, there is a higher rate of parental guilt, despair and postpartum depression for both mothers and fathers.” Statistically, the rates of divorce in the first year of marriage is much higher, she says. “Support, especially in the first six months, is vital to the health of every family member,” says Desiree who experienced post-partum depression. One of the triplets was stillborn and Roxas, (one of the twins) was not expected to survive either.

“We didn’t know if he was going to live until he was five days old and was quite fragile.” Those were hard times but now Desiree is a self-assured mother who believes that the best thing about being a volunteer at Multiples Counties Manukau is the difference they make to people’s lives. “Also, I can easily understand their struggles and am grateful that they helped me at a time when I was very vulnerable,” she says. Desiree admits she was a tad disappointed when she went for an ultrasound two years after the birth of her twins and discovered there was only one blob showing up instead of two.

STATISTICS According to Statistics New Zealand in 2018 there were 714 sets of twins born. The percentage of multiple births that make up the overall birth rate was 1.24 per cent. Triplet births stayed the same with three sets born in 2018 (all stats are including stillbirths). In 2018, the first set of quads in 20 years was born.

CAB annual awareness week
Role model teacher celebrated by Zonta Z
onta East Auckland recently celebrated International Womens Day with the Rose Day Award, a Zonta International initiative. Zonta Rose Day, is celebrated each year on March 8 — also International Women’s Day—a time to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in their countries and communities. Rose Day Awards are presented as a token of appreciation for their work and commitment. This year the awardee was Neera Sundrum, a teacher at Howick College. Neera has been a dean, teacher and a role model who has inspired students with her passion, energy and enthusiasm as well as community service to create a better world. She initiated the Enviro club, culture club, Z club, Leo club, culture club, Ingham house council and committee at Howick College. The clubs go with Mrs Sundrum’s day-today job as a dean and teacher as she works beyond the call of duty to empower students. Equally inspiring was

he Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) has been helping people in New Zealand for 50 years,” says Louise Boswell, manager CAB. “A lot has changed over this time, especially with more and more things moving online, but being able to get help in-person from your local CAB is more valued than ever. “At Pakuranga and Botany we’re here for you, whether you want to talk to someone face-toface, call us on the phone or contact us online – you will get help from a person in your community, not a robot or someone from the other side of the world. You won’t need a login or password to talk to us.” While the internet has made some things easier, the experience of the CAB is that there are lots of people who struggle to do things online. “There are many barriers, and these aren’t just about having access to a computer or knowing how to open a new tab on a web browser,” says Louise. “Sometimes it’s an issue of language or disability or a lack of confidence, but it’s often just about wanting to talk to another human being.” “People come to us because they need and value the support of another person,” says Louise. It’s this humanness of the CAB service and its accessibility to the public that is being celebrated this year during the CAB’s annual Awareness Week. “We’re here for everyone, about anything, and in a way that works for you” says Louise. “We are a Migrant Connect bureau helping new migrants to settle and integrate into New Zealand.”

Labour’s Chen to contest Botany T
he Labour Party has selected consultant and public servant Naisi Chen to contest Botany at the 2020 general election in September. “It’s an honour to be selected to contest Botany for Labour. As a young New Zealander I am really excited to see the country going in the right direction under the Jacinda Ardern led government. I know that the people of Botany will continue to benefit from the progress our Government is making,” says Chen. She believes the Labour-led Government is tackling some of New Zealand’s most deeply rooted problems. “The economy is finally becoming one where it works for every New Zealander. With rising wages and low unemployment, our families are better off. “And because of our efforts we can afford the biggest investment in new infrastructure for more than 20 years, while being well prepared to meet global challenges,” she says. “With new mental health services, record numbers of new state houses, more funding for great new schools, hospitals and cancer treatments and more cops on the beat than ever before, our communities are stronger and safer which makes me hopeful for the future as a young person.”

She says she’s running “to continue that progress” and deliver for local people, including all the different communities that make Botany so diverse. Chen is the director of a business consultancy firm specialising in employment relations and HR matters and one event management and concert promotion company. She sits on the board of Foundation North and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. She is the vice president of
the youth wing of the NZ Labour Party-Young Labour and also sits on the Youth Advisory Group of Philanthropy NZ. Chen is a choral conductor, chartered member of the Institute of Directors, former President of the New Zealand Chinese Students’ Association, former advisory board member of NZ China Council, an alumnus of the Office of Ethnic Communities Young Leaders Program and recipient of the 2017 ANZ Community Spirit Award.
Last month I joined 80 other MPs in supporting the Abortion Legislation Bill to advance further. In the next two weeks it’s likely abortion reform will be across the line. Every so often issues crop up in Parliament where MPs exercise “conscience votes” on matters often controversial or involving questions of morality. Parliament finished debating voluntary euthanasia just a few months ago. Now abortion law reform is on the table and we are being actively lobbied by both sides. That’s healthy in a democracy. What’s also healthy, in my view, is that we view this issue through the prism of women’s health. Right now, abortion is still a crime. There is a 1970s-inspired work around that sees the vast majority of women that have to make their hardest life decision on mental health grounds. The proposed Abortion Legislation Bill would see this issue removed from the Crimes Act and a health approach taken instead. Up to 20 weeks a doctor would be able to treat a women purely on health grounds. After 20 weeks abortion services could only be performed if two doctors reasonably believe it is clinically appropriate in the circumstances. This proposal is remarkable similar
to how the law is implemented right now, but with one key difference: we won’t have a law on the books saying women are criminals if they want to make decisions about their own bodies. Two thirds of MPs said this law reform should become law. That seems about right to me when I consider surveys in Botany I have run lately have come back about 60/40 or 70/30 in favour. After hearing the different arguments for and against, and looking at local surveys, I intend to cast further votes in favour of modernising this outdated law. I accept there are passionate views on either side of this debate. For some, any abortion services are a moral outrage. How I vote will not please all people, but I am pro-choice in this matter. I challenge other local MPs and candidates with different positions to seriously answer this question: should it ever be a crime for a person to access the health services they need? ➤➤Jami-Lee Ross is MP for Botany

n approximate 300-strong crowd were on hand at Cockle Bay on Sunday, March 15 to take part in a day of fun in the sun, put on by the local Howick Lions. The weather played its part with a spectacular early-autumn display as kids tried their hand at kayaking and the hotly contested Sea Scout raft races, and learned about water
safety through Drowning Prevention Auckland. Fisheries officers were on hand to provide information on the rahui placed on Cockle Bay, and provide information on sustainability. The Lions cooked up the sausages and fried the chips, with the proceeds directed to Howick Volunteer Coastguard.

Good turnout at Howick Rotary Fun Run H
aving hosted the event for more 15 years now, the Howick Rotary Club of Fun Walk and Run had a good response despite the coronavirus scare. The sun was shining bright on Stockade Hill as local primary and intermediate schools, and their parents turned up to participate in the fun walk and run that the Rotarians had meticulously organised. Shelly Park Primary won the Junior cup and Somerville Intermediate
were the winners of the Intermediate cup – apart from the individual adult winners. Each participating child was awarded a medal at the finishing line. There was a festive atmosphere with music, sausage sizzle, fresh fruits and plenty of water being served to the participants who walked around proudly with their medal in hand. All proceeds from the event will go to Howick Coastguard. Last year the Rotary Club of Howick donated $9000 to the charity.

Houstoun plays The Egyptian for the final time A
fter almost fifty years of playing, New Zealand’s foremost pianist Michael Houstoun will be performing in South Auckland for the final time on Saturday 21 March with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra (MSO), before ‘hanging up his fingers’ in retirement. Performing Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 5, nicknamed The Egyptian’, Houstoun says he loves the charm, exoticism and virtuosity of the work. Since first performing with the MSO in 2005 at the opening of the now Vodafone Events Centre, this will be the sixth time Houstoun performs with the MSO. “Michael is our most-loved soloist,” says Uwe Grodd, musical director of the Manukau Symphony Orchestra. “He is a charismatic performer and we are humbled to be on this rewarding journey and sharing the stage with him.” Houstoun says he loves the MSO and that he and the MSO have a great history together. “The MSO plays a terrific role in greater Auckland’s musical life and I wish that will continue,” says

Southern Cross Partners was founded by Barry and Julia Milward in 1997 to assist businesspeople who were having difficulty obtaining finance for projects. Regarding your poll (times.co.nz), I request that you have a rethink (use of cheques in the 21st Century). Cheques are required upon occasion for clubs and groups where two people have to be signatories to ensure that there is no theft of club funds, and to ensure accountability as if only one person has control that is when problems ensue. Two signatories is a good protection of club funds. Is there an electronic way around this yet? Please have a re-think for when enduring power of attorney exists and there may be two people e.g. children that have to both sign for any payments from the parents’ account under the power of attorney, and one may be in North Island and one may live in the South. They can mail a cheque for each to sign and then post off to pay a bill but how does this work in the electronic world? So all I respectfully ask is to have a re-think. Actually not all sizes fit all and not all circumstances work in the ‘e-world’. Yes I agree a lot has changed and cheques may need to be discouraged but I ask, please, for the banks to come up with a way to address issues of payments for clubs and societies to avoid fraud and embezzlement, and for powers of attorney, and when signatories live apart. Can there be a two-person pin system created on line? Banks need to come to the party to create a new way of pay-

ment for when two party signatories are required. Some clubs may even need three signatures. There are always two sides to every story, and it is always good to report from both sides in order to get an unbiased account, and for people to draw their own conclusions on the best way forward based on the merits of each option available. I could not complete your poll as there was not a box to click for more work by banks needed to address this issue. I agree in principle it is high time for banks to get rid of cheques but before they do, they need to come up with a solution for all their customers so that none are inconvenienced. Many elderly do not have emails, or internet and have paid by cheque all their lives. We need to respect these people and not bully them into doing something that they may not feel comfortable with. Some elderly ask their carers to pay their bills etc online, and this can again create an area where fraud and embezzlement can occur as they can transfer funds out without the account-holders’ knowledge. Again, a two-person, two-pin system should be required to avoid any potential pitfalls for the vulnerable in our society to protect them from any potential illwill or nefarious deeds by those with the power to act in this manner. I challenge you to find a solution to the above situation without cheques in this modern age! Banks need to get on board with new multi-approval require-

Nothing wrong with Botany parking Further to your article about parking at Botany Town Centre (Tuesday March 10), I would like to support the concerns about the treatment of staff at the centre. I have visited Botany Town Centre thousands of times (yes, actually) in the 20 years it has been open and I can safely say that parking is an issue on only rare, and predictable, occasions. Of course, it is busy around Christmas and the sensible arrangement to use Botany Downs Secondary College for staff parking has worked well for many years. Parking is also sometimes tight around the middle of the day at weekends. The centre management may well need to sort out some solution for that time. But at other times, basically every single week day, there is always ample parking for everyone. Plenty of empty spaces. I cannot imagine why the management would come up with this plan - unless they are taking advice from the most notorious parking “authority” in Auckland. That outfit well-known to Fair Go and disliked by most motorists. Can Botany Town Centre confirm that their parking ideas are coming from Wilsons? Opinion: Big nights on the e-sports coming in wake of Covid-19 virus A
s Covid-19 takes hold across the globe, mass sports events are being subjected to cancellations, or players plying their trade in front of empty stadia. Local Australasian competitions including Super Rugby, NRL, are in state of flux and the ChappellHadlee cricket series was been canned after initially playing in an empty SCG. TV sport producers are scrambling to fill content in prime-time weekend slots abundant at this time of year due to summer to winter code crossovers and the conclusion of high-profile competitions like the English Premier League (EPL) and the NBA. Fortunately, broadcasters such as Sky have vast archives of past events, and the climate can be tempered by replays of feel-good sporting nostalgia. How long that option is viable to the fickle viewing public is debatable. Sports radio stations are also up a certain creek without a certain instrument, as shows dedicated to either live commentary or talking about recently-concluded games will become increasingly bereft of topics. Some holes can be plugged by reverting to long periods of talkback, but this can quickly become tedious.

aving outplayed the mercurial Damian McKenzie in the Hurricanes’ last-minute 27-24 Super Rugby win against the Chiefs, Jordie Barrett served notice to brother Beauden that he doesn’t own the All Blacks’ No 15 jersey either. Whether Jordie gets it could depend on whether the selectors will retain Richie Mounga at first five or return Beauden there once the coronavirus threat is gone. Meanwhile with Super Rugby suspended because of the pandemic, fullback and first-five are two positions where the All Blacks have tremendous depth in which the leading candidates are all capable of playing top footy at test level. The daring McKenzie was the first choice until injury wrecked his World Cup prospects last year and Beauden Barrett stepped into the berth, just as he did at the 2015 World Cup when Dan Carter reigned as first-five. McKenzie is a brave, exciting player who does everything at full pace but sometimes takes risks others wouldn’t dare. Although he’s a brave defender, he’s not as strong a tackler as the Barrett brothers who also have considerable attacking flair with Beauden twice named International Player of the Year. Add to that fellow international Ameliaranne Ekenasio’s 18/22 and Aliyah Dunn’s 35/38 for the champion Central Pulse in their 53-41 win against the Mainland Tactics and the depth is encouraging. Only fitness issues stopped Dunn from winning Ferns honours last year but she’s a cool customer under fire with age on her side. While most fans will lament the suspension of their sport, it probably was a relief for cricket fans who were gutted by the Black Caps gutless first game ODI loss to Australia. Magic at home against India and clueless against Australia on Aussie wickets, the team is an enigma which flatters to deceive. Brown takes a plucky sixth at Ironman NZ Legendary ironman triathlete Cameron Brown wants to continue racing until he is 50! Brown, 47, from Dannemora, made the comment after a creditable sixth place in Ironman New Zealand on March 7. He has won Ironman NZ 12 times. He was positive about his finish given that his training was curtailed after an injury. “It’s pretty good considering I had seven weeks off running after Ironman Busselton with a torn calf,” said Brown. “I only had five to six weeks of running which is my strength so I didn’t have the base endurance in me so I’m happy with how I got through it.” He considered it “not bad going” with his finishing the swim, bike, run in 8 hours 14 minutes just 3 months shy of his 48th birthday. First place went to English pro triathlete Joe Skipper in a time of 7:54:17. Second was Kiwi Mike Phillips in 8:01:27 and third place went to another Kiwi Braden Currie who finished in 8:04:36. “Thanks again to my coach @ gordywalk for getting me as fit as possible and my swim coach @markbone59, to my family,
