Go Bus drivers in Auckland took strike action yesterday as relations reached a new low with their employer. FIRST Union said it follows a week where the company cancelled regular wage bargaining and “arbitrarily suspended union-affiliated drivers, rejected mediated bargaining and endangered the safety of striking workers”. Drivers from the East Tamaki (the depot is at 352 East Tamaki Road) and Airport Go Bus depots withdrew their labour from 4am yesterday for 24 hours. “This follows weeks of non-disruptive protest that included free fares strikes, partial strikes and repeated attempts to negotiate with both Go Bus as the operator and Auckland Transport as the service provider. Go Bus have also (Tuesday) declined Min-
istry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s offer to attend mediated bargaining with drivers. FIRST Union said that bus drivers were left with no other option “after being met with total hostility by their employer and receiving no response after writing to Auckland Transport”. “These drivers tried peaceful strike action and were met with arbitrary suspensions that targeted union delegates and anyone else holding out for fair wage bargaining,” FIRST Union said. “Both Go Bus and Auckland Transport have tried to pit drivers against the public, which is irresponsible and disingenuous - none of them have taken these actions lightly, and they care about their jobs and their passengers. “What they forget is that
these drivers are the public, too - they’re low-waged workers fighting for a fair deal at work and regularly scheduled wage bargaining that doesn’t devolve into the zero-sum game that Go Bus have tried to force during one-sided negotiations.” “Auckland Transport need to wake up and recognise that Go Bus are acting unlawfully and unethically - they’re funded to provide a proper service for the city but instead they’re undermining experienced drivers to keep wages low and pocketing the rest of it while their buses are undermaintained and their drivers are underpaid.” Carol Clark, a 48-year-old bus driver and union delegate, believes union members are being targeted by Go Bus for seeking better wages and conditions while the wider
public has been supportive throughout the industrial action. “My passengers have been amazing, bringing me food and coffee and checking in on how the strike’s going - they understand that it’s not easy for anyone but they want to help,” said Ms Clark. “They’re just amazed that anyone can work a 14-hour shift and stay polite and friendly on such low wages with poor working conditions. “Back at the depot, I’m seeing experienced union drivers being targeted by managers who don’t know how to do the job, and people being suspended for all sorts of historical stuff that Go Bus never cared about before and still don’t care about non-union drivers doing.” Go Bus was approached for comment.

Robbery at Meadowlands â– â– BY JIM BIRCHALL
A
brazen daylight robbery, the second similar incident in the past month, occurred at Meadowlands on Saturday. According to a witness who did not want to be named, up to five Caucasian teenagers, four male and a female, approached a middle aged man in the vicinity of Countdown inside the mall. The man was carrying a bag containing his wallet, along with groceries and cigarettes he had recently purchased, when it was snatched. The offenders fled into the car park where, what the informant believes to be two male Polynesian accomplices were waiting in a silver 3 Series BMW, leaving the scene a short time later. Another male involved in the incident was seen re-entering the mall’s foyer to collect the female suspect. The witness believes the offenders may be the same teenagers reported to be involved in violence and intimidationrelated crimes throughout the eastern area. The person believes the group is organised and was targeting people who had recently used the ASB ATM adjacent
Unsafe swimming Four local beaches have been classified as unsafe to swim at. Auckland Council’s Safeswim website, which provides live information on water quality and swimming conditions at Auckland swimming spots, said on Monday there was a high risk of illness from swimming at Big Bucklands Beach, Howick Beach, Sunkist Bay (Beachlands) and Umupuia Duders (east of Maraetai).

Our investigation is still ongoing into this incident and at this stage no arrests have been made.� Howick Local board member Bo Burns witnessed an incident with similarities to Saturday’s on October 28, where an Asian woman’s bag was snatched by some young offenders. The St Mark’s Catholic School principal admits she still gets a little teary-eyed when she reflects on her decision to retire after leading the school for 17 years. “Though I won’t miss the 15 hour work days and the massive responsibility of having a vision and making so many decisions a day, I will miss the relationships I share with all the stakeholders including the students, staff, teachers, board of trustees, Parent Teacher Association and the community.� She says a principal could make up to 60 decisions a day. “That would include two to three major decisions a day,� says Rivers. She believes the school is in a very good place after four to five years of consecutive outstanding Education Review Office reviews and top Catholic Special Character Reviews “After 17 years it’s time to step down and hand over responsibility and the privilege to another. I think it is the right time for the school and me, both professionally and personally as our school has con-

Paradise lost? Big stink at Formosa golf resort ■■BY JIM BIRCHALL
E
mbattled golf resort Formosa, in Pine Harbour, has been in the news in the past year over accusations raw sewage has been pumped out of on-site septic tanks and disposed of in a stream that flows to the ocean. The company was served with an abatement notice by Auckland Council on January 31 this year, concerning the toxic effluent-filled wastewater. An investigation launched by Auckland Council’s Regulatory Compliance unit, has recently finished. The Times approached council for an update and received the following from senior media specialist Anna Kellett. “The investigation has been concluded and we are currently collating and analysing the evidence. We hope to have an update in the near future.” Aside from the effluent issues, the embattled owners are also dealing with leaserelated grievances from a catering company that took out a 20-year option to operate Formosa’s restaurant. It is understood the lease was terminated by the resort owners 110 Formosa (NZ) Limited, as a result of the restaurant receiving an

insanitary building notice from Auckland Council on June 7, 2019 and being subsequently shut down for three months. The notice stated: “The building onsite are being serviced by a wastewater treatment system which is currently non-functioning and which is contrary to the building code.” In an ongoing legal stoush, the restaurateurs are arguing they are owed compensation by 110 Formosa (NZ) Ltd due to the early lease termination. Their argument is based upon the fact they were unable to trade due to the council shutdown and have lost thousands
in revenue. They also state all rent was paid up despite not being able to open. Seeking clarification, The Times has made inquiries with 110 Formosa’s spokesperson Graham Chin but he had not responded by publication time. Opened in 1997, wellappointed villas overlooking the Hauraki Gulf & a world class golf course gave the resort a VIP feel akin to similar resorts in Asia. On a recent visit however, the Times observed, in parts, a facility that resembled a postapocalyptic wasteland. Rusty, wheel-less golf carts are lined

up in a disused carpark, the grounds remain unkempt, buildings appear in need of maintenance work and the once trendy villas are in various states of disrepair. Even the Formosa Golf Resort entry signage, once resplendent in gold lettering, has been replaced by a cheap-looking alternative. The golf course remains open, as does an on-site fitness club. The resort currently holds a two-star customer review rating on its Facebook page, and three and a half stars on Tripadvisor.
Needles found in Orangewood Park, Howick A resident stumbled upon a bag containing needles, a wig, condoms and mail addressed to several different people, when walking a dog on a usual morning excursion in Orangewood Park, Howick, on Tuesday (November 12). The person contacted his wife, who shared the photos on a local social media page. She is concerned about kids being exposed to the needles, a scenario she describes as “a parent’s worst nightmare”. The bag was found in close proximity to an area where a school walking bus starts off on its journey in the mornings. In the past she has noticed empty beer bottles and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) canisters strewn across the park. The bag was handed into Ormiston police.

■■BY JIM BIRCHALL The Times had quite a response to last week’s inorganic collection story, in which 79-year-old Mary Wilton aired her grievance with council’s collection policy. Readers expressed an overwhelming dissatisfaction with the current service as shown by the theme of the comments below: Ed Lander was annoyed by the scheduling of pickups, which saw his neighbour’s refuse go uncollected as he had booked on another day. “The council picked my inorganic items as scheduled but refused to take my neighbour’s as he had phoned and booked his collection a couple of days after me and council returned one week later to pick up his. What a joke sending two trucks back one week later.” Local resident Deane was also confused by his items not being picked up. “I had a very small amount of waste which included a few pieces of wood, a few of pieces of gib and tile board. I wouldn’t have even been 1/10th of the amount I was allowed to put out. They took the wood and left the rest, but unlike Mary, I didn’t get any card saying why. They put on the list that you can’t put out construction waste, but that should be to stop building sites dumping stuff. Not for a resident with 7 items. The ridiculous bit is that I just took it, broke it down a bit more and placed it in the normal rubbish bin. It all ends up in the same place.” Bob Fletcher felt the service has deteriorated. “First a list of ‘haz-

Paint these days can only be taken to Resenes who will charge for each can that is not a Resene paint. Old gas bottles have to be taken to a company in Wiri. unnyhills School students have created a fun new hide and seek game that helps promote bee care. The students were excited to welcome beehives to their school recently. As a GreenGold Enviroschool, the beehives form part of their efforts to help create a sustainable future. “Did you know most of the plants we need for food rely on pollination by bees?” says Vera
Akitson, a year six student. With the bee populations declining, to promote bee care, such as not spraying pesticide, the year five and six students have created Bee Rocks. They’ll be hiding the small stones, painted like bees and covered in messages about how to care for bees, in public spaces in a 3.2 kilometre radius around Sunnyhills School, in which their bees will fly. The community is invited to
search for the bee rocks. When found, they can photograph them and post to Instagram #beesrock and #sunnyhillsschoolbees. “Please re-hide the rocks so the fun can continue,” advises Christine Daniel, the Sunnyhills Education for Sustainability teacher. “It’d be great if everyone planted more flowers for the bees,” says Chloe Crawford, a year six student. “Let’s all help make our suburb a more colourful and sustainable environment!”

Students remember invasion of Parihaka Baverstock Oaks School students wore Maori headbands and white feathers on Friday, symbolising peace to commemorate the invasion of Parihaka in 1881. Lindy Fisher illustrator of the book ’Remember that November’ authored by Jennifer Beck, was there to read from the beautifully illustrated, poignant story that recounts a key event in Aotearoa New Zealand’s history. The invasion of Parihaka relates to over 1600 government troops invading the western Taranaki settlement of Parihaka, which had come to symbolise peaceful resistance to the confiscation of Maori land. The government responded with laws targeting Parihaka protesters and imprisoned several hundred without trial.

The mosaic heart which is part of the logo was from the memorial candle they had made for her mother, and represents many things – a life of many parts, the myriad of relationships people have over a lifetime, a heart that is shattered by a loss of someone, a piece of your heart always remaining true to someone – people will take different meanings from it. Crabtree the greatest showman R
obert Kelvin (Rob) Crabtree, a former senior Rotarian in Howick, has died. Rob passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, October 30. He was 75. Rob, who was a Rotary District Governor and a Brother of the Freemason’s Lodge of The Liberal Arts in Ellerslie, is the husband of the late Christine. A NZ Herald death notice reads: “Loved and loving father and fatherin-law of Matthew and Helen, Rupert, and Rebecca and Jeff. Cherished Poppa of Georgia, and Sophie; Noah, and Oliver; Finley, and Hamish. “Donations to Big Brothers Big Sisters Taranaki would be appreciated and may be left at the service. Messages to the Crabtree family may be left on Rob’s tribute page at eagars. co.nz/ rob.” The managing director at CAL Public Relations, Rob went to Hutt Valley High School and studied at Victoria University of Wellington. He was also the former programme supply manager head of sport at Radio New Zealand. From 20102013 he was Rotary Coordinator for Rotary International’s Zone 7B. Bob Jollands, another past Howick Rotarian who was a District Governor For Rotary District 9920 (East Auckland and 8 PI countries) shared some memories. “Rob was a great showman, especially organising or as MC at any event and 10 years before he became Governor, I requested him to be the Chairman for my District Conference that we held in Fiji at the Fijian,” said Bob.

And as Rob was a details man, he arranged for the US Ambassador to Fiji to meet Gilbert at the airport and deliver him to our conference.” Bob added: “He was an inspiration to us all as a man of high values and a wonderful family. His boys played rugby with ours as children and I can recall delivering them to a game one day when they proudly told me that their dad had been out dining with the Queen. They were so proud of their Dad and rightly so.” An excerpt from Giving Back A history of the first 50 years of Howick Rotary 1961 – 2011 written by the late Brian Hanlon captures more of Rob. “Ten years later (after Bob Jollands) another Howick Rotarian took on the leadership of the district. Rob Crabtree came to this club (Howick)
by way of the Rotary Club of Stokes Valley where he was a charter member from June 1974. “He joined Howick in the 1982/3 year bringing with him that enormous energy and sense of enjoyment that became his hallmark. He soon accepted various roles in the club, became fellowship director in 1985, and president in 1989. And of course in Bob Jollands’ year as District Governor, Rob planned and masterminded that hugely successful District conference held in Fiji. His leadership qualities and ability to get things done had been well recognised by this time and he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship in 1992.” Former Howick Borough Mayor Morrin Cooper told the Times: “Rob was a greatly respected resident of Howick for over 30 years…a true Howickian. “His community services included

t’s not often that you see police dancing at an event as the crowd cheers them on. Some of the guests at the Rotary Club of Somerville Festival of Lights Fundraiser held recently at the Star of the Sea School were in for a surprise when the keepers of law, men and women in uniform led by Senior Constable Sarah Su, performed the traditional Indian Bhangra dance. A part of their outreach programme, it was refreshing to see the people behind the badge add to the rhythm and tempo of the evening as they engaged with the community. The Rotary Club of Somerville event that featured a host of performances and the auction proved a great success. The funds raised will go towards supporting both Rotary’s local as well as international projects, thus spreading light in people’s lives which is the true significance of Diwali, the Festival of Lights.

Game on: virtually exciting reality I
n a classroom of Rive Block in Pakuranga College, exciting things are happening. The creation of software for virtual reality gaming has gripped the imagination of students at Pakuranga College. A VR game created by Yuewei Zhang, recently won the Year 13 student $1000 at the Media Design School Bright Awards, with an additional $3000 in prize money going to the College. Organised by New Zealand’s most awarded tertiary digital design institute, the awards recognise the creative talent of high school students from across the country in a range of disciplines, including graphic design, animation, photography and game development. This year Pakuranga College entered the Game category and took home all three awards in this group resulting in it being named the Bright Awards ‘School of the Year’. Vicky Tasker, content and communications manager at Media Design School commented: “Pakuranga College should be enormously proud – we were blown away by the calibre of work.” As winner Zhang prepares to move on to start engineering degree, his position as king of the school’s Game Development Club will be hotly contested by a number of younger students, most of whom took home highly commended accolades for their entries into the Bright Awards. Charlie Smith from Pakuranga College’s Technology department who oversees the group says: “Most of these students find their way into game development through NCEA Year 9 Communications, which incorporates a one term module in game development. This introduces them to graphics animation, programming and game play (action or plot creation).” Several of the group are already considering a career in the field, including Year 11 student Tyler Gamble, who is keen to create games that fill a gap in the current range of games available for VR says: “It’s great to be able to

create a game with all of the elements I want,” he says, “instead of relying on someone else’s idea of what is fun or interesting”. The $3000 prize money will be

Fresh leadership for east Auckland Last Monday two important meetings took place in east Auckland that will affect the leadership of our community. The Botany National Party met and selected Christopher Luxon as the new National Party Candidate for the Botany Electorate, and the Howick Local Board met for the first time since the 2019 Local Body elections and elected Adele White as the new chair of the Howick Local Board. Both of these selections are very important for the east Auckland community and bring fresh leadership to our community. Christopher Luxon is an exceptional candidate for the Botany Electorate. Christopher has had a very successful business career and has now set his sights on what he can do to make a difference for the people of Botany and New Zealand. His experience will be invalu-
able in our caucus and in Parliament and Botany will be well-represented by Christopher if they elect him as their next MP. As the neighbouring MP to Botany, I am excited to be supporting Christopher as he seeks to be their next representative in Parliament and I am looking forward to working alongside him and advocating on the issues that matter to east Aucklanders, such as transport, housing and law and order. I am also looking forward to working alongside Adele White as the new Howick Local Board chair; and the entire Howick Local Board. Adele is well-known and respected for the work she has done in east Auckland as a police officer, marriage celebrant, antenatal pregnancy trainer and, of course, as a local body politician. Howick lost its first wicket at 57 when Dan Young was dismissed for 34. Skipper Andrew Morrison joined Bill Walsh and the pair took the score up to 180, before Morrison was sent back to the pavilion for 66. Things didn’t get any better for University, as Walsh and Brian Barnard batted positively, putting on 113 runs, taking Howick Pakuranga into a first innings lead. Bill Walsh was dismissed for a chance less century which included 14 fours and a massive six over long on. The Alpacas batted on, finally declaring at 367/9. Barnard scored a swashbuckling 86 in 80 balls including 6 fours and 3 sixes, with Danru Ferns 33* playing a nice cameo at the end. University played out time and was 60/0 at the close.The match ending in a draw. After HPCC secured first innings points. The result puts the Alpacas on top of the points table, with two other sides after one round. Next week they face close rivals Papatoetoe at home in what promises to be another testing encounter. BBAFC bring home 2 cups B
ucklands Beach AFC (BBAFC) has had great success at the U19 Napier National Tournament with the men winning the Satellite final 4-0 over Stop Out of Wellington and the women’s team – in their first year there – clinching the plate final 2-1 over Palmerston North. BBAFC sent their U19s down to the U19 Napier Nationals over Labour Weekend. It was the fourth time that the BBAFC had sent a men’s team to compete in the Satellite competition and the first time for their women’s team. Both teams came home with trophies, capping off a very successful year for the club. This years men’s team was
coached by Men’s First Team head coach Rudy Mozr and Director of Football Sander Waterland. The first day saw them with wins over Stop Out 3-1, Seatoun 2-0 and a draw 1 -1 with Kapiti Coast. Second day and they won their first game 9-0 over Wainuiomata which finish top of their pool with a game in hand. They were able to rest key players and drew the last pool game 1-1 with Taradale. The quarter final had them in a tight tussle against local team Napier Marist. A single goal proved enough for victory. Semi-final was an early 8am kick-off against in form hosts Napier City Rovers, going on to win 2-1.

This put them into the Satellite final playing on the main pitch at Napier City against Stop Out. Stop Out were tired having had to go into extra time in their semi-final win. BBAFC were able to put away a couple of quick goals and go onto win the final 4-0. It was a great team effort with all players contributing to an outstanding result for the club. Special mention to Thomas Golding who won the Golden Boot for the tournament scoring 8 goals in 8 games, including a hat-trick in the final. The women’s team was coached by Charlie Hunn and entered the unknown of tournament football. Their first
game saw them go down 1-0 to last year’s champions Hamilton Wanderers. A very respectful result. They then drew 1-1 with Petone and a highlight was a 1-0 win over Ellerslie who fielded a couple of New Zealand representatives. A 2-0 win over Kapiti Coast put them into the Plate final against Palmerston North which they went on to win 2-1. An exceptional showing by the girls with an average age of only 16-and-a-half. This holds BBAFC in good condition for next year as their Women’s First Team will play in the AFF/NFF Conference competition for the first time having gained promotion this season having won Women’s AFF Div 1.

lean Collective is a boutique beverage company founded in 2016 by ex-Howick college student Holly McGrath and partner Dan Benoy, who did his schooling at Macleans College. In 2016, they came up with the idea for a “clean” ready-to-drink (RTD) product after struggling to find any premixed drinks in their local liquor store that weren’t loaded with excessive amounts of sugar and preservatives.
The business is booming after finding a niche with body-conscious, ‘low carb’ enthusiasts. As a result of the hard work put in by Holly, Dan, her father David and stepmother Rebecca, ‘Clean Team’ has been awarded a Westpac business award for ‘Best emerging business’ in the Auckland north west area. A big summer is planned with Clean Collective drinks being featured at the bars of many upcoming festivals around the country.

Charitable trust has had a name change The Pakuranga Rugby Development Foundation has re-branded to become the Fencible Foundation to reflect its broader community base. Established in 2015 as the Pakuranga Rugby Development Foundation, the Trust’s aim is to financially support talented young sports people who wish to stay in the community, after leaving school, in the form of tertiary and trade grants. “We saw the need a decade ago for an charitable organisation to support local high school athletes who had to leave the community to pursue sporting careers. We were originally aligned to the Pakuranga Rugby Club; however, we have now expanded our reach to support both male and females across all sporting codes,” said

Toastmasters break world record National Toastmasters organisation which included members from the Howick, Pakuranga and Elim chapter recently attained a Guinness World Record. 171 Toastmasters gave 381 speeches one after the other, for 127 hours 31 minutes 43 seconds, this was attained by a nonstop effort over a week of 24 hour days of speaking. Some people spoke for 5 minutes and others spoke for over an hour.
Local representation came from Deborah Gleiser, Greg Longstaff, and Mari Finn of Howick TM Club, Christine Alcott and Alun Chisholm of Pakuranga TM Club, and Greg Barnes and Kulesh De Silva of Elim TM Club. Alun Chisholm put in a massive effort to get the challenge over the line. “I was there mostly at night 10pm through 6 am, maybe for 68 hours of the 127½,” and added “living nearby was a help,” he says.
Trust chairman Graeme Heaphy. “The Fencible Foundation name change is more relevant to the broader community and the athletes we wish to support.” Grants of $1500 to $2000 are awarded each year to successful applicants for use towards training fees, study items and or tools for trades. Applicants are able to apply for up to three-years funding during their training. Applications for funding are now open and local athletes wishing to study in 2020 are encouraged to apply online. ➤➤Applications close on December 1 this year. fter starting on the front row for the Penrite Oil Sandown 500, the #7 Plus Fitness Nissan Altima Andre Heimgartner has shared with Bryce Fullwood across the PIRTEK Enduro Cup was brought home in eighth position after 500km of tough racing on Sunday. While an undeniably strong result for the Melbournebased driver from Dannemora and his co-driver, the top eight finishing position does not tell the full story of the speed and potential shown by the #7 and its drivers across the weekend. That potential was clearly on-show during Saturday’s proceedings, with the pair impressing during the qualifying races. Heimgartner first qualified the car for the co-drivers race in P3. Fullwood then brought the #7 home in third in that race before Heimgartner would finish the main drivers qualifying race in P2 – a Supercars career-best result for the 24-year-old which also secured the front-row starting position on the grid for Sunday’s big race. “We had some fantastic car speed in the #7 this weekend. It was great on Saturday
