The first Wesleyan Methodist opened in Howick in 1852 and Pakuranga in 1866. The original chapel built in Picton Street has for many years been restored and preserved in the Howick Historical Village and is still used for special occasions such as weddings. Today there are six churches in east Auckland that are part of the John Wesley family of churches including the church where Dr Waugh is senior minister, East City Wesleyan Church in Botany.

“I set out to write an accessible book for lay people about Wesleyan theology and Methodist history. My book identified essential Wesleyan DNA and has useful discussion questions and practical resources for local church life,” says Dr Waugh.

“I am hoping it will be especially useful for our local Methodist/Wesleyan/Salvation Army churches here in east Auckland.”

Dr Waugh is also the president of the World Methodist Historical Society and his book has been endorsed by key leaders of global Methodism.

‘absence’ notes. After 21 years, it is finally time for Kim to hand in her own absence request and enjoy a well-earned retirement. The keen leisure marcher is looking forward to spending time with her three grandchildren and volunteering in her local community of Howick.

Kim Hillgrove, who originally started work at the school as a teacher aide in the special education department, has seen several principals come and go, including Pam Stone, Bali Haque, Heather McCrae and current principal, Michael Williams. Both of her daughters have been through

Pakuranga College and, during the past 21 years, she has thrown herself into life at the school, managing netball teams and scoring girl’s cricket matches.

We asked what she would miss most about working at Pakuranga College: “The students – some of them are real treasures. Oh and their funny excuses for being late.”

She even keeps a book of these, which she will be taking with her into retirement. “I had a cracker today,” she says. “A boy from a rural area was late because of “problems with the cows”. I don’t think I’ve heard that one before!”

Sex assaults at primary school A dad who says his young son was sexually assaulted at school by other kids is demanding greater safety for students and a guarantee no other children will be victimised.

The father, whose identity the Times cannot reveal for fear of identifying his child, believes Shelly Park School failed to determine the scale of the problem which involves at least four children aged from 5 to 7. The incidents began in about August 2018.

The parent made went public in a social media post on November 26, 2019 “after mulling the whole situation over and becoming frustrated the school had done nothing to protect the victims or ensure any other students had been victimised”.

Shelly Park principal Brian Rolfe and Board of Trustees chair Brendon White responded to parents with a December 4 note – which the Times obtained a copy of – explaining that an extensive investigation had been carried out into this matter “when it first came to the school’s attention”.

“The NZ Police, Oranga Tamariki and Ministry of Education were involved,” the note said.

The school says in its note that the parent’s social media post was “inaccurate and emotive”.

“We are pleased to be able to reassure parents that this incident is not a current one as the posts infers. Despite requests to provide and multiple correspondence, no further information has come to light and no further incidents have been reported,” the school note says.

“Earlier this year the Board of Trustees received a complaint with regards to the concerning behaviours of a few boys from the junior school in the boys’ toilets. The Board was satisfied as to how the matter was investigated and dealt with by the school staff. The families of those involved discussed a detailed report of the circumstance with the Principal. We are confident the issue has been dealt with effectively and that it was not of a sinister nature. No older boys or adults were involved. ➤➤Turn to page 5

spotlight has been shone on achievements in the youth of Botany, Ormiston, Howick and Pakuranga at the inaugural East Auckland Youth Awards — an event organised by the Howick Youth Council.

The awards, which are supported by the Howick Local Board, were held on Saturday and saw the celebration of achievements in the categories of sporting, arts, the environment, leadership, service and community. Judging was conducted anonymously and done in collaboration with the local board.

The ceremony was held at the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club in Half Moon Bay Marina.

The prize-winners were: The Sporting Achievement Award was presented for significant success in sporting pursuits — this may have been regional, national or leadership success in their chosen sport.

Nicola Bebelman won this award for her achievements in the world of ice figure skating.

Runner-up: Bryan Shi. The Cultural Pursuits Award was presented for demonstrating a high calibre of skill while participating in cultural activities. This was awarded to Selena Guo, for her numerous leader-

The Arts Achievement Award was presented for significant success in both the visual and performing arts. The winner of this award was Henry Lockhart for his work within his school, as a prefect and student representative. Runner-up: Selena Guo. This was awarded to Millad Rashidi for his work in the local community.

From the prizewinners above, one young person was also judged to be East Auckland’s Young Person of the Year. This award was presented to a young East Aucklander who excelled at a high level in multiple pursuits.

New charity crowd funding concept 1

0x10philanthropy.com is a live crowdfunding event concept which was started five years ago by a group of enthusiastic, sociallyconscious young adults who wanted to make a difference.

Since then, the events have raised more than $2 million for 200 different charities across Australia, UK, Hong Kong and the USA. Now a similar group of young philanthropic Auckland professionals are bringing it to life here.

Alaina McGregor, a Howick resident, is leading the charge as 10x10’s New Zealand ambassador.

Alaina got involved in the concept after being introduced to the idea while living in Sydney.

“I know many people who want to be involved in social change but don’t have the time, knowledge or infrastructure to do it in a way that is meaningful.

“Being involved with 10x10, either as a committee volunteer or an event participant enables them to channel that enthusiasm in a way that can deliver a proven impact for the charities involved.

The Auckland event - the first 10x10 event in New Zealand - was held on November 28.

The Dragon’s Den-style crowd funding event involves grassroots charities pitching for funds from the audience.

professionals who form a volunteer committee, each event is designed to support charities who are working to address some of the community’s most pressing social issues.

Brothers in Arms, Mothers Project and I Got Your Back Pack were the charities involved for the inaugural event.

The night was a great success, with more than 100 attendees and fundraising exceeding initial target.

Father alleges young son abused at local primary school ➤➤From page 3 “The Board were in contact with the NZ Police and the Ministry of Education (MoE) but this matter was not shared with the general school population because it was not appropriate to reveal details of those involved for privacy reasons.

However we have been left with no choice due to actions of one parent.”

The school reiterated that the MoE decided no further action was warranted.

“It is damaging to have such activity occur on social media particularly when the posting does not reveal an accurate version of events,” the December 4 school note said.

“Please rest assured that we take these matters very seriously and work through with all parties (both internally and externally) to

ensure that the wellbeing of the children are at the forefront of both our actions and associated communication.”

However the aggrieved parent believes the entire situation has been badly handled. He has even questioned whether the principal and BoT chair can keep their positions.

“I have been trying to persuade the Shelly Park School principal and chairman of the Board of Trustees to fulfil their obligation to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the students in their care.

“I feel they have been, since its discovery, trying to downplay the events by referring to it as the toilet games.

“I have from the outset requested three seemingly sensible things for

the school to be certain of: ➤➤1. Ensure the offenders are safe in their environments outside of school; ➤➤2. Make sure there are no other victims; ➤➤3. Put sufficient steps in place to prevent any more offending and ensure the safety of victims.

He maintains the reaction and investigation by the school has been handled in a way that has left “a lot to be desired”.

“Information that my son had since disclosed states that the boy named as the most victimised was in fact the instigator, coercing the boys into the toilets then threatening them.”

Last month his son was put into the same class as one of the perpetrators.

“This had a severe impact on his wellbeing as we had assured him that he wouldn’t be put in any situation with either perpetrator again and highlighted my concern that the school wasn’t taking this seriously enough. Or putting enough steps in place to ensure the health and safety of it’s students,” the parent said.

“On the 25th of November my son didn’t want to go to school as he feared that there would be put in the situation of being forced into the same class as a perpetrator that has caused him a great deal trauma.”

The parent was also unhappy with police with whom he laid a complaint about the school on August 26 “as it was obvious (Principal) Brian (Rolfe) had no intention of finding out the scale of the

offending”.

Police said they take all reports of concern for children seriously and liaised with Oranga Tamariki on the matter. “Under New Zealand law, a child under the age of 10 has no criminal liability and the correct pathway for this matter to be dealt with was between the school, the Ministry of Education and Oranga Tamariki.

“The police concluded, due to the age of the offenders, there was no criminal intent behind their actions.”

But the concerned parent claims the police completed an investigation without interviewing any victims or perpetrators.

“I have raised concerns surrounding the police investigation with the Independent Police Complaints Authority.”

uckland Council has filed 17 charges against three defendants relating to discharges of wastewater at the Formosa Golf Club in Beachlands.

The defendants have been summoned to appear at the Manukau District Court on January 22, 2020 These cases are prosecuted under the Resource Management Act and can carry a maximum penalty on conviction of two years’ imprisonment for an individual or a $300,000 fine, or a $600,000 fine for a company.

Auckland Council’s regulatory compliance manager Steve Pearce said, “We take a graduated approach to enforcement, however where there are serious effects from non-compliance and the council’s requests are ignored we will take offenders to court.

“The council takes improving Auckland’s water quality very seriously and significant effort is spent in working to maintain the quality of streams and other waterways across Auckland.”

The embattled golf resort Formosa has been in the news in the past year over accusations raw sewage has been pumped out of on-site septic tanks and disposed of in a stream that flows to the ocean.

The company was served with an abatement notice by Auckland Council on January 31 this year, concerning the toxic effluent-filled wastewater.

“In their most recent response, AT claims they are simply lining up the lane with the same rules applied around the city, but transport cannot be a one size fits all approach,” said Brown.

“AT also claim that the lane has improved travel times for buses and multi-occupant vehicles without affecting single-occupant vehicles in general traffic but can only provide vague percentages to back this up.

“Even then, their data shows the lane has made almost no impact either way, so I continue to wonder why it was needed in the first place.”

The response also indicates that planning for the Reeves Road Flyover, which was delayed a few months ago, should be ready for consultation early next year.

“I will keep a close eye on developments in this space to ensure AT delivers the project within the timeframe they have given,” he said.

“I also recently raised concerns with AT about reports I had

received from locals that the T2 lane was now being monitored by cameras. AT confirmed they had begun a programme of monitoring the lane to ensure compliance but that, for now, they would only be warning noncompliant drivers.”

They have however stated that formal enforcement will begin after a ‘grace period’.

“This will ultimately be another revenue-gathering exercise for AT, who know how difficult it is for drivers on Pakuranga Road to comply with this lane particularly between Cascades and Gossamer,” Brown said.

“This will ultimately make the lane less safe than it already is, as drivers will now be worrying about being ticketed outside of the 50m clearance.”

“I remain unconvinced that AT has the best interests of our community at heart when it comes to their decision-making around transport issues, and I will continue to advocate for the solutions that Pakuranga needs to fix our longstanding traffic issues.”

Suspicious fire Police are investigating a suspicious fire at a Flat Bush property on Kalmore Place.

The incident occurred before midnight on Saturday November 30. Police were called to attend after a quantity of cannabis was located at the address. “Our enquiries are still continuing at this stage,” a police spokesman said.

ollowing the delivery of a petition calling on Auckland Transport (AT) to remove the T2 lane from Pakuranga Road, which was signed by more than 1500 locals, AT’s response leaves no doubt about their lack of interest for what the community thinks, says Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown.

“Since the T2 lane was installed on Pakuranga Road many months ago I have had hundreds of local residents who use the road on a daily basis come to me with their concerns, particularly around the potential for a bad accident to occur,” he said.

A lot of the concern has been centered on the section of the lane between Cascades Road and Gossamer Drive, and the 50m allowance that has been provided for traffic turning left out of Cascades Road and traffic turning left into Gossamer Drive.

Since the lane was first proposed, residents have tried to warn AT that the 50m allowance is not enough to mitigate the risks.

Serious crash on John Gill Rd

Howick Local Board member and well-known businessman John Spiller was elected to the deputy-chair position at the boards’ first meeting on December 9. He replaces Katrina Bungard in the position, who retains her place on the board for the Pakuranga subdivision. It was the first meeting of the new board, and the last for 2019.

Police are investigating a serious crash involving a single vehicle that occurred on John Gill Road, Shelly Park on Saturday. Police were called to the scene at 6.25pm. A vehicle had collided with a letterbox before crashing into a tree. The four occupants were taken to Middlemore Hospital. One occupant had serious injuries and the others were assessed as being in a moderate condition. Police enquiries are continuing into the crash.

his is my final column for 2019 and I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas from my family to yours.

Christmas is always a special time of the year as it gives us a chance to take a breather, reflect on the year that has been, and refresh ourselves for the year to come.

For me, this means spending some quality time with my family. Next year is going to be busy, with an important election due at some point through the year.

As an MP it can be difficult juggling my responsibilities as your representative in Parliament with my family life at home but the support I receive from the local community makes it a lot easier.

2019 has been an enjoyable year in Pakuranga and I have loved every minute serving as your MP. We are lucky to live in one of the best places in New Zealand and I am honoured to represent you in Parliament.

I have been all over the electorate visiting schools, businesses, and community groups, volunteering for local charities, knocking on your doors, and meeting you on the streets.

► 800g watermelon ► 1 fennel bulb ► 1 punnet blueberries, cut in half ► 1 tbsp Dijon mustard ► 1 tbsp elderflower honey ► 1 tbsp water ► ¼ cup grapeseed oil ► 1 tbsp Honeygar (apple cider vinegar with manuka honey) Serves: 6

his is a really fresh-tasting salad that works well alongside big bold steaks or just as well with fish. I use elderflower honey in this recipe because it is delicious, but feel free to swap it out for your favourite honey.

Cut the skin off the watermelon; remove as many of the seeds as you can, then cut the watermelon into 2cm cubes.

Place in a large salad bowl.

Thinly slice the fennel using a mandolin, drop the slices into a bowl of

ice and water, and reserve the fronds.

Soak the fennel for 5 minutes, then drain and add to the watermelon along with the blueberries.

In a bowl, whisk together the mustard, honey and water.

Slowly drizzle in the oil while

continuing to whisk till the dressing thickens. Add the Honeygar and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Kiwis set to outspend Aussies this Christmas

N

ew research from Accenture New Zealand shows while Kiwis will be splurging on gifts, food and alcohol, Christmas will be a more frugal affair across the ditch in Australia.

The research, which surveyed 1500 Australians and New Zealanders and was conducted

by Coleman Parkes Research, found the average Kiwi will spend $952 this Christmas. The typical Australian will spend only $726.

What’s under the tree this year?

Accenture New Zealand’s research shows New Zealand respondents are set to give clothing and footwear as the number one present this Christmas, according to 57 per cent of consumers. Gift cards for stores, restaurants or online shopping (52 per cent) are the next choice, followed by toys (50 per cent). The trend is similar in Australia, with more than half of respondents (56 per cent) saying

gift cards will be their present of choice.

Australians and Kiwis will spend about a fifth of their Christmas budgets on gift cards alone (23 per cent and 18 per cent respectively).

Although Kiwis are increasingly looking online for gifts, browsing in-store remains the top choice for people looking for ideas.

Almost half (47 per cent) of all Kiwis favour bricks-and-mortar shops for inspiration, followed by personal recommendations (38 per cent) and retailer catalogues (26 per cent). But when it comes to purchasing gifts, 41 per cent of New Zealanders say they will go online to buy compared to 34 per cent of Australians.

About one-third (30 per cent) of Kiwis plan to hit the stores in early December.

Just under a quarter (20 per cent) of the organised said they picked up gifts throughout the year and 21 per cent will leave things to the last minute, doing the dreaded shopping rush in the final two weeks before Christmas Day.

Going upmarket

More than a third (36 per cent) of both New Zealanders and Australians cited grocery costs as the main factor impacting household spending during the holiday season.

This is followed by disposable income (31 per cent Australia, 27 per cent New Zealand) and utility costs (25 per cent Australia, 24 per cent New Zealand). Still, shoppers are more likely to go for big-name brands rather than budget labels at Christmas time.

More than a third of both Kiwis and Australians say they will likely trade up to premium brand food items over the Christmas holidays.

Tips to have yourself a zero waste Christmas

A

s the Christmas season gets fully into swing, the Zero Waste Network is encouraging New Zealanders to enjoy a zero waste holiday season.

The things we choose to do and buy this Christmas have significant impacts on our climate, ecosystems, water, air and communities. New Zealanders generate more waste per person than almost anywhere else in the world: we discard 15.5 million tonnes of waste each year - about 3200kg for every person. Right now we only recycle 28 per cent of this waste.

The holiday season is a great time to spend time with family and friends and to celebrate the end of the year. It can also be a really stressful time as there are often expectations and family traditions about Christmas gift-giving. For those of us who are trying to reduce our impact on the earth by embracing zero waste in our dayto-day life, there is the extra stress of wanting to be true to our values

while being a part of the rituals that are important to us.

Food, glorious food, is a big part of Christmas. One thing you can do is plan your meals before you shop to avoid buying too much that may go to waste. It’s also good to have a plan for leftovers so you benefit from the food you’ve already prepared instead of chucking it in the bin. The average New Zealand household in 2018 wasted $644 worth of food per annum - approximately 86 kilos.

Municipal landfills take huge amounts of organic waste, which produces methane, an aggressive greenhouse gas.

The most important thing to remember is to be gentle with yourself and others. It is often said that, “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly.

We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.”

That said, there are lots of ways that we can enjoy all of the festivities of Christmas while embracing zero waste. Here’s a few ideas to get you going.

1. Make your own gifts

Many of us have skills or talents that we want to use - or things that we would like to learn how to do: knitting, painting, music, photography, graphic design, movie making, weaving, carving, pottery, jewellery making, tool making... and so on. These hobbies and skills are a great way to make a unique, specialised present. There are literally dozens of websites with gift ideas and recipes of things you can make.

2. Give the gift of your time So many of us are really timepoor these days. We are running around with crazy schedules trying to find enough free minutes to do small things. Giving the gift of your time to someone can be invaluable. You might be available to give new parents a night off so they can have a long-overdue date, give time for a gardening working bee to get a friend’s yard in order, help paint a family member’s house or fix their car.

3. Make a gift of a service Such as a massage, gig tickets, haircut, a restaurant voucher, a music lesson or a fun trip. Treating your family and friends to a special experience can often be a better way to show your love, affection or appreciation than an object because it can expose a person to something new that they might not do for themselves and can create lasting memories.

4. Gift a tree - create a forest Gift the planting of a tree to restore our native forests.

There are a number of projects around the country where you can purchase a native tree in someone’s name as a gift to be planted in a regenerating forest or reserve. Projects include the Native Forest Restoration Trust (nationwide), the Kaipatiki Project (Auckland), Trees That Count: Te Rahi O Tane (nationwide), and Motuihe Project (Hauraki Gulf).

Many of these projects will issue a certificate for the gift that you can give to the recipient, and even invite them along to the planting session of ‘their’ tree.

Dance troupe primed for show

T

his year’s Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park will see a team of champion dancers from Botanybased dance studio, Carter Chan Dance, perform with some of New Zealand’s best-known celebrities on the big stage.

This is the fifth time the Carter-Chan Dance studio has been asked to perform at this popular annual event which traditionally attracts more than 200,000 people to the Auckland Domain for a night of Christmas music, song and dance.

The team of 14 dancers ranging in age from eight to 16 years has been rehearsing for more than three months to perfect their performances for the big night on Saturday.

Twelve-year-old Jessica Kendrick-Jones says, “I can’t wait to get on the stage and perform for everyone.”

The excited dance group will be performing three items during the show including a finale with the arrival of the big man in the red suit.

Protect kerb stones

The old basalt kerb-stones in upper Moore Street have recently been replaced with new concrete kerbing.

The kerb stones in Picton Street have considerable historical and aesthetic value. They were laid in 1931 when the concrete road was officially opened joining Howick to Auckland City. The basalt kerbstones were made by Dalmatians in the Penrose quarry.

We should all try to maintain these important links with our past, and I am sorry to see these hand-crafted kerb blocks removed. The remaining kerb stones must be protected.

This is maddening

Many weeks ago Auckland Transport dug up the road outside the Howick and Eastern bus depot on Ti Rakau Drive to create turning lanes and install traffic signals.

The lanes were created and the traffic lights were installed. That work finished about a month ago.

The lights were not made to work.

Since that time the lovely new lanes have been blocked by orange cones.

This means that buses wanting to go right out of the depot must go left, right at the Botany Rd lights and go through the shopping centre to u-turn at the roundabout, leave the shopping precinct, go right onto Botany Rd and left onto Ti Rakau to commence their trip towards Pakuranga.

If the bus is coming from the south, they must go around the block making more congestion on the Harris Rd area.

It is timely for the men of this country to answer the call to improve their behaviour towards women and toward one another. Do unto others as you would have done to you. It is an age old saying and full of wisdom.

No one wants their money stolen, or being lied to, or being bashed-up!

Revenge only leads to more revenge. Let justice prevail for all women, widows and the fatherless.

Let truth, protection and generosity be our guide, let compassion and love for one another dissolve the hatred and anger.

Let forgiveness flow from the hurts we all suffer. We all serve one of two masters, one for good and one for evil. It is a free choice for all to make but the consequences of that choice are profound. One leads to rightliving and the other to destruction.

Too many of our men are choosing the destructive path. The whole country then suffers the consequences. Can we rise to the challenge? Yes, I believe we can and we will.

Post-Grace Millane tragedy One of the sad things about the post-Grace Millane tragedy was how the incident was (is) hijacked for various narratives.

The details surrounding the murder were conflated with ‘victim blaming’ or ‘victim shaming’ even though the sex lives of both the victim and the perpetrator were investigated and the subject matter was relevant.

Then we had a murder in a hotel room conflated with domestic violence.

The bow was drawn longer and bikes hit the streets, as this then was conflated with how boys and men are raised; as if this was directly related to the sickness of that incident.

Inevitably this is conflated with ‘toxic masculinity’.

As a result of this indigent virtue signalling all of ‘mankind’ has been drawn into a single clump of blame.

For these middlebrow psychologists, the world is a room with the shades constantly drawn; a gloomy place where unfairness festers and predators lurk – they best let other people share this ‘reality’.

The most decent thing that came out of the whole tragedy was a letter, by Brodie Kane, in the Herald, expressing our empathy for the sorrow and loss the parents and family of Grace, must be feeling.

A far healthier response than the drama and opportunism indulged by others.

Your view Police conduct

I read with much interest of the mum who has complained to the ICPA (Independent Police Conduct Authority) with regards the inaction of police to respond to her son’s request for assistance after an incident at the recent Midnight Madness.

Unfortunately this is now how police deal with teenagers as I learned after a family member was involved in a car accident that involved a stationary police in the driving lane in July this year.

After what was supposed to be a thorough 20-plus week investigation with promises that “all parties will be furnished with the final report”, the only thing furnished by police was a conclusion that the family member was at fault, a fine and a warning.

No details of the incident, no acknowledgement that the police were involved in the accident, no answers to any of the many questions raised with police, an OIA (Official Information Act) request for information surrounding the accident was declined and even when asked for a copy of statements made by family members who attended the accident, police refused to cooperate.

This has led me to also make a complaint to the ICPA and a further OIA request regarding this accident.

onstrated they are incapable of objectively and independently investigating allegations of impropriety of their own frontline staff. This is made worse by refusing to release information and reports that have been sanctioned at the highest level of regional command.

The truth will come out and, at that point, nothing less than resignations will suffice as the current practice of a cover-up culture must be eliminated.

It implies that their behaviour is taught to them at school and that no other influences affect who they are or the way they behave.

The Howick/Pakuranga/ Botany area is blessed with a number of quality senior schools. They are all different and each one has students who represent a bright hope for the future.

Each school also has those who do not always work to promote a positive image of their school.

Outside school hours, young adults will behave in good ways and bad, regardless of what school they attend.

To link a school to behaviour well outside school hours is just wrong.

I have just finished reading Jim Birchall’s ‘Hurt Boy’s mother complains to IPCA’ which is the front page story of the Thursday December 5 edition of the Howick and Pakuranga Times.

I would like to comment on a number of comments made in the article.

Why was it considered necessary to name two local schools in the article? The wording of the comment, ‘some of whom are believed to be from…’ suggests a lack of certainty about the comment and plenty of conjecture.

The fact that the comment was placed within brackets emphasises that it is merely an observation, not a fact. Surely a rule of journalism, good quality journalism, is that if a comment cannot be verified, it should not be published.

Why was the word ‘student’ used to describe those involved? The incident took place on a Friday evening, well outside school hours. Using the word ‘students’ to describe those involved places them in a school context.

Friday evening/night on Stockade Hill during Midnight Madness is not, as far as I know, a school context so surely it would be more honest to refer to them as young adults or youths.

By identifying the schools and referring to those involved as students indicates a certain bias or opinion in your reporting which does nobody any

So far so good but there would be limited use for this output and would need some means of sequestering the vast amount of unusable CO2.

That need is the Achilles heel of the process because alternatives so far available are very costly.

An alternative could be the Hazer process which is capable of not only producing hydrogen for its many uses but can do so while capturing all of the carbon as graphite (with its own valuable uses in batteries for EVs and steel making).

Absolutely nil need to sequester anything and much greener result than the Allam option.

Survey shows market bounce back The latest survey data from Crockers Property shows the Auckland housing market resurging as prices, returns and rents climb

T

his month, the volume and prices of Auckland residential property sales and rents have rebounded from the slump of recent months and landlords are feeling more bullish about future returns than they have for over 18 months.

Compared to November last year, landlords are increasingly reporting that tenants are looking for specific property features when searching for a property, especially insulation and heat pumps.

Auckland median prices & sales numbers The median sales price for Auckland residential properties increased from $848k in Sep ‘19 to $868k in Oct ‘19; the median sales price sits at a higher point than Oct ‘18 ($861k) and Oct ‘17 ($850k).

The sales volume also increased from 1823 in Sep ‘19 to 2,025 in Oct ‘19, suggesting that the market is being stimu-

lated once again after a period of cooling.

Auckland rental prices

The average Auckland rent for 2-bedroom residential properties increased from $514 in Sep ‘19 to $516 in Oct ‘19, while the average rent for 3-bedroom properties in Auckland increased from $642 to $645.

Healthy homes standards This month Crockers asked respondents if they were aware of the new healthy homes standards that came into effect on 1st July, 2019.

Encouragingly, 96 per cent of respondents were aware of the changes; however, 26 per cent of respondents were unaware of their obligations under them.

Residential Tenancy Act changes Crockers also asked investors about the changes to the Resi-

dential Tenancy Act – an example of a change being made to this act is limiting tenants’ liability for careless damage in rental properties.

The percentage of those aware of the changes has remained at 84 per cent.

What tenants are looking for This month Crockers asked investors about the changing needs of Auckland tenants and how much they agree with tenants’ being able to make minor alterations to a property.

Changes in property features sought Crockers asked respondents if tenants were looking for specific features when seeking a rental property. Some 28 per cent of respondents believed that they had noticed tenants looking for specific features in a property, a 4-point increase on November 2018.

Key property features for tenants Those who thought that tenants were looking for more specific property features again most commonly mentioned insulation, although this time heat pumps were also top of the list (both 13 mentions).

Fresh paint / wallpaper is the least important feature that tenants are looking out for (4 mentions in November 2019).

Crockers Property Investment Index Auckland Rental Property Performance Index Both the Auckland Rental Property Investment Index and the Auckland Rental Property Performance Index have increased this month, as a result of an increase in those who believe the market will improve.

Increased competition for property Committed buyers have returned to the Auckland residential property market.

“It was a result foreshadowed by strong sales in October, and the lift the market received then has flowed into significantly higher prices in November,” said Kiri Barfoot, director, Barfoot & Thompson.

“Activity has not returned to the heydays experienced at the height of the previous price cycle but Auckland sales have certainly shrugged off the modest turnover and price movements experienced over the past two years.”

The median price for the month at $891,000 is up 5.8 per cent on the average for the past three months while the average price at $963,671 is up 3.5 per cent.

Monthly price increases of this size were last seen when the market was at its strongest in 2016 through to the early part of 2017.

Sales numbers for the month at 960 were the highest in a month since March this year and the highest they have been in a November since 2015.

“A contributing factor to the price increases is the declining pool of properties on the market,” Barfoot said.

“In November we listed 1517 new properties, and although this is one of our higher monthly numbers this year, it is our lowest in a November for 11 years.

“At month-end we had only 3703 properties on our books, close to a quarter lower than we had at the same time last year.

“End result is that when high quality properties reach the market there is determined competition among committed buyers which is driving prices higher.”

Price is proving no barrier to property sales at the top end of the market, and in November the

“At the same time we sold 103 properties valued at under $500,000,” Barfoot said.

Howick Santa Parade a big hit C

hristmas season is officially started, with Santa Claus’ smooth landing in Howick on Sunday.

And in true, fair-dinkum Kiwi style, the jolly big-bearded man in red was towed into town by a vintage Ferguson tractor.

His arrival was preceded by a maiden voyage, the firstever appearance of his good wife, Mrs Claus, in the Howick Santa Parade – its 66th year – at the end of a colourful cavalcade of people from across the communities in east Auckland.

In dry and muggy weather, 60 groups from schools; service, interest and activity groups marched happily and in their thousands, watched by an even bigger enthusiastic crowd. It was loud and festive.

“It was a wonderful show of what is great in our Howick community,” says Bo Burns, chief elf and event organiser, of the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust.

“Our people were on display, showing us their talents, dedication and commitment to achieving and serving.

“The parade is about our people and what they do during the year, and with the arrival of Santa, we celebrate

Christmas and what has happened over the past 12 months.”

Howick Village was a vibrant carnival atmosphere from the morning through to the completion of the afternoon parade, with large audiences enjoying the Picton Street entertainment performances in the lead-up, and activities and displays in Uxbridge Road and Moore Street.

“There are many people to thank, especially the crowds who came to watch, enjoy and participate in the 66th Howick Santa Parade. I’m particularly grateful to all of the Santa’s Helpers and parade workers and volunteers for their hard work, commitment, and fun and friendly style, as it takes many hours and a lot of effort to stage an event of this size,” says Burns.

Burns says donations collected on the day through the entertainment, barbecues, raffles, and massages was $1800.

“Thank you to everyone who supported our community parade and we’re very appreciative of our sponsors and supporters, Barfoot and Thompson, Andrew Simms motor dealerships, New World Howick, Galbraiths Law, the

Howick Local Board, and also our media supporter Howick and Pakuranga Times.

he clash between the two top sides in Auckland promised much and delivered a spinetingling match which went right down to the last ball.

Parnell batted first in the third round of the Jeff Crowe limited overs competition and were immediately in trouble at 2/3 due to fiery opening bursts from Donovan Grobbelaar and Mitchell McClenaghan, both taking an early wicket.

However Parnell knuckled down with Ben Horne and Flynn McGregor-Sumpter staging a third wicket recovery yielding 166 runs before Horne went for 98.

McGregor-Sumpter went next for 64 with the score at 200 and rain stopped play a short time later The match was shortened to 48 overs with McClenaghan and Grobbelaar taking a wicket each as Parnell were restricted to 229.

The Alpaca’s opening pair of Dan Young and Bill Walsh put on a useful 55 runs for the first wicket before Young went for 28.

From then on Howick Pakuranga continued to lose wickets regularly with the batsmen all getting starts

but only Brian Barnard with 45 managing to go on.

Two unfortunate run-outs did not help the Alpaca’s cause. At 177/7 with 9 overs to go, the situation looked grim for the home side but Adam Jones’ 31 off 29 balls and Rudi Botadra with a run-a-ball 25 took the score to 228 with three balls to go.

Unfortunately Fisher ended Jones’s valiant effort and the next batsman was caught first ball and Parnell held on to win.

The result leaves Parnell as the only undefeated team in the competition, with the Alpacas still in the hunt lying second on the table.

Sunnyhills win women’s title Sunnyhills Tennis Club is celebrating after becoming the new Women’s Caro Bowl Champion.

It was a very close contest, with a nail-biting ending with both Sunnyhills and Bucklands Beach winning three matches each and all of them on straight sets at Koru Tennis Club at Pakuranga Heights on Friday.

A games countback had to be calculated and Sunnyhills ended up ahead by 52 games to 48.

said although it is a relatively short season, there’s a lot of work that went on behind the scenes into the Caro Bowl season, Auckland’s premier interclub tennis competition.

Cockle Bay Tennis Caro Bowl win For the first time in nine years of competing in New Zealand’s Premier Club Competition, Cockle Bay has taken out the title on the 100th anniversary of the competition.

After picking up both doubles against Next Generation, Cockle Bay was in the driver’s seat needing one more win and a couple of

sets from the remaining matches to take the men’s title.

James Meredith and Connor Heap won top doubles 6-3 6-2 Rob Reynolds and Alex Hunt won bottom doubles 7-6 3-6 10-7.

Heap won the number 4 singles convincingly (6-0 6-1) pretty much sealing the deal and it was all over when Hunt took the sec-

ond set in the number 3 singles.

The matches were livestreamed with an impressive number of viewers.

In the nine years Cockle Bay has competed, they have only missed the play-offs twice.

Pakuranga College students are celebrating a basketball training session alongside the NZ Breakers. On Wednesday December 4, thanks to Fuji Xerox, a mix of Year 9-11 students from the school learned how to slam dunk and shoot three pointers with New Zealand’s best basketballers.

Students trained with community coaches and then watched the Breakers as they ran a skills and drills session at the Mairangi Bay training facility.
