rmiston Junior College has been mentioned in an announcement regarding a third case of the deadly coronavirus Covid-19.

Media have reported that the Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield confirmed that the third case was a man in Auckland in his 40s.

“He has close family members who have returned to New Zealand after spending time in Iran recently,” the NZH Online reported.

A blast for the past More than 100 guests gathered to mark the 40th anniversary of the Howick Historical Village on Sunday.

The Village opened on March 8, 1980.

Howick Lions have been providing working bees since the village’s conception right through to the present day. They have been involved in fencing, maintenance, gardening and painting.

There was a special anniversary celebration attended by various invited volunteers from over the years. This was followed by a tour, various presentations with much reminiscing in the Pakuranga School historical building. Afterwards guests had afternoon tea followed by the cutting of the 40th anniversary cake in Bell House.

The festivities continue this Sunday with a special anniversary fete day from 10am-5pm. There will be games, food, stalls and activities. Families can relax and unwind with a picnic under a tree!

taff and tenants at Botany Town Centre are upset over management’s decision to limit parking spaces to employees.

From March 2, it is a first-in firstserved. If staff miss out, they must find parking off site.

Claudia McNulty, an employee who works at the town centre, says that the closest parking that is free for staff is at least 1.2km away in suburban streets.

Urging people who are working at Botany Town Centre to sign an online petition that has collected 3500 signatures, she says that while designated parking spaces for staff will free up extra slots for customers, “without staff there would be no revenue for the mall that has just had $78 million worth of redevelopment”.

The petition reads: “For the people who are working in restaurants and Hoyts where finish times come close to, if not past, 11pm; it is not safe to be walking down the road a few kilometres to their cars.

“While it is understood that parking restrictions and payments are part of Auckland life, paid parking is generally contained to the city centre and areas such as Newmarket and Ponsonby, not the likes of humble Botany.

“There are plenty of reviews on Google that rave about how plentiful parking is at Botany Town Centre.

“During busy periods such as Christmas and New Year’s, staff should be able to continue parking

In answer to that Claudia points that the overflow parking is the street behind the town centre, which is residential. As for the paid parking for staff and tenants she says, “At this stage it is a $3 flat rate, which at five days a week would be an extra $700 or so per year.”

More recently, centre management have sent an updated notice that says the staff may move their cars closer after the mall closes at 6pm, or Thursday and Friday late nights at 9pm, says Claudia.

“The notice mentions that there is CCTV as well as sufficient lighting on site and that staff no longer have to notify the centre if they are in on their rostered day off if they abide by the other car park rules.”

Claudia says the support they’ve had is overwhelming and she will keep the petition open for the time being, more so since residents at Armory Dr have started complaining that town centre staff have been taking up their parking space and need to find their own.

As we go to press centre manager Hughes responds: “The additional overflow parking for staff and tenants is located on site between two of the designated paid parking areas at Botany Town Centre. We want to reiterate that staff, tenant and customer safety is a priority and parking on site is supported by the security measures we have in place on a daily basis.”

‘A child could be killed’: School at wits’ end with Auckland Transport ■■BY JIM BIRCHALL

e Uho o Te Nikau school principal Mel Bland is exasperated by lack of action from Auckland Transport over a temporary pedestrian bridge and the implementation of digital speed signs, saying “a child could be killed” if measures are not put in place immediately.

The school is pushing for a temporary pedestrian bridge to be built on Flat Bush School Road while a decision is made on building a long-term full vehicle/pedestrian bridge.

Currently, students as young as five have to cross a narrow bridge with no footpaths while cars speed past at up to 100km/h. The temporary bridge, which has a price tag of $1 million, was approved by Howick Local Board last year.

Recently there was yet another frightening near-miss on the bridge, witnessed by parents.

definitely have been killed and I have spent more time in conversation with my parent community. This community is absolutely outraged.

They understand that you can’t control motorists but you do control roads, speed zones.. it has been three years we have been waiting for support to keep our children safe.”

Beattie did give a timeline for the completion of the bridge next year and suggested a stop-gap measure “It is my understanding that the new pedestrian bridge and associated footpath connections is anticipated to be completed by June 2021. He proposed to “narrow the bridge and approaches to one lane, and provide

a temporary, segregated footpath until the new bridge is built. This may receive some negative feedback from drivers and other sections of the local community.”

There is currently an 80km/h speed zone in front of the school which the school wants reduced to 40km/h to bring into line with other schools in Auckland. The school has begged AT for electronic warning signs to be installed.

When quizzed about the implementation of the signs Beattie said: “There are no plans for additional signs of this type to be placed outside the school. Additional warning and advisory speed signage will be investigated for the crossing point” As a result, the school has resorted to suggesting to AT that they (the school) should buy their own active warning signs, but Beattie poured cold water over the idea. “Cost is not the issue and it is something that we have budget for. The issue is that digital 40km/h signs require a bylaw to allow them to be legal speed limits and to allow them to

be enforced. Also, the school has to meet criteria, which is set out in law, before a change can be made to the speed limit. These are national requirements and Auckland Transport does not have the authority to change this.”

There is also a desperate need to get a pedestrian crossing painted in front of the school.

In regards to this Beattie said: “We will arrange for the zebra crossing markings and associated signage to be installed in the near future.”

Bland said constant delays and empty promises from AT had them consider removing speed signs from nearby Ako Place (which currently has no through traffic).

This common-sense approach was again shut down by Beattie who said: “No, they are necessary for the traffic management plan that the contractor has put in place…we will provide additional signs.”

At the date of publication, these additional signs have not been provided, and Mr Beattie has not responded to the Times inquiry.

CHILDREN’S DAY

Making meaningful connections at Children’s Day Expo From rock climbing to axe-throwing, and plenty of fun and adventure activities there was free food and spot prizes to be won at the Children’s Day Expo hosted by St Columba Presbyterian Church Botany on Sunday.

Over 100 kids along with their families participated in a treasure hunt where kids had to get to know different social service and community agencies to win spot prizes.

Rev Chris Barnard, minister at St Columba Church said that what touched him the most is hearing a story about a young mother who had a stillborn child and struggled to cope with her four-year-old still grieving for the child they had lost.

“Talking to someone from a social service agency today helped and the young mother was very grateful that she had made this connection. Its things like these that matter most at the end of the day, especially if it can help someone,” he said.

Polyfest going ahead despite fear of coronavirus T

he Manukau Sports Bowl will burst into life in a fortnight’s time with the 45th anniversary of the ASB Polyfest.

From Wednesday, March 18 to Saturday, March 21 the Sports Bowl will reverberate with traditional song and dance from Auckland’s youth.

With regard to the coronavirus, the organisers of the ASB Polyfest are monitoring the advice and recommendations of the Ministry of Health on a regular basis, and at this stage are going ahead with the festival.

The Minister of Health, David Clark said last week: “We don’t have an outbreak in New Zealand, it’s perfectly safe,” when asked by media if events like the ASB Polyfest should go ahead.

Clark said, “We’re confident at this stage the chance of any spread into the community is

very low, as long as people take the sensible precautions”.

He added “If anyone is feeling unwell they shouldn’t go to a big public event.”

And they should self-isolate.

The 2020 ASB Polyfest was officially launched by the Minster of Pacific People’s – Aupito William Sio at a special function at ASB’s North Wharf.

This year’s festival will see more than 12,000 secondary school students from across the Auckland region perform on stage, with a record 286 performing groups entered (including three international groups) from 75 schools, with eight schools coming from outside of the Auckland region.

Students will compete in speech, song and dance on six stages – Cook Islands, Maori, Niue, Samoan, Tongan, and a

Diversity stage which features cultures such as Chinese, Fijian, Tokelau, Indian, Korean and Sri Lankan.

Another key component of the ASB Polyfest is food and craft.

Each stage has a surrounding village with food and craft stalls from the respective Maori or Pacific culture.

At the helm of the iconic Auckland festival is event director – Seiuli Terri Leo-Mauu who sees the festival as “more than four days of competition, speech and performances. It’s a place our children can express themselves, it’s an avenue that creates time with our mamas and papas and learning the old ways of how to weave and make your costumes, how to sing or chant the way they do back home, how to be respectful and be disciplined, how to be a leader.”

‘Nats got $150k from China’ ing his own concerns to authorities.

“What I learned was that large sums of money, adding up to around $150,000, coming directly out of China in Chinese yuan, over [two] successive years ended up as political party donations.

“Two individuals - Shaoli Xie and Shaona Zhang - were used as conduits for the donations.”

The funds eventually made their way to the National Party and that was where the money remained, Ross said.

He said National should return the donations or transfer the money to the Electoral Commission, RNZ reported.

“I doubt the National Party knew at the time that the money was foreign - I certainly didn’t either – but now that they will have that information to hand, they need to show leadership and do the right thing.”

Meanwhile the National Party, from who he is estranged, was quick to respond on Thursday.

“The National Party is unaware of what Mr Ross was referring to today in Parliament and have not seen the document he referred to,” a National Party spokesperson said. “We stand by our previous statements on this matter and are confident that the court will establish the clear facts.

“Until that Court process is complete it is not possible for us to say more at this stage.”

Ross appeared in Auckland District Court on February 25 to answer charges brought by the SFO in relation to National Party donations impropriety.

He and two others each face two charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’.

The charges relate to donations paid to the National Party.

He and his co-defendants have denied the SFO charges.

Independent Botany MP JamiLee Ross, under parliamentary privilege, has accused the National Party of receiving foreign cash from China’s Communist Party.

RNZ reported that Ross, speaking in the debating chamber last Thursday, called on National to return about $150,000 which he said he had learned originated from China.

“Ross also sought to make public two flow-charts prepared by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) which he said showed the flow of money but was blocked by the Speaker due to legal concerns,” RNZ said.

“These donations are linked back to China, are linked to the Chinese Communist Party and with ease entered New Zealand,” he told MPs. RNZ reported that Ross said he first learned about the origins of the donations last year after tak-

Local man jailed for child abuse imagery A

Howick man has sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for knowingly possessing and distributing child sexual abuse imagery and blackmail.

Thirty-year-old Earl Gary Chatterton was sentenced at Manukau District Court last Wednesday to four years and nine months in prison.

The sentence is the result of a joint investigation by NZ Police and the Department of Internal Affairs which commenced in August 2018.

Chatterton admitted 26 charges involving the distribution and possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation imagery and one charge of blackmail.

The joint investigation revealed

Chatterton distributed, copied and was in possession of over 80 objectionable image files and attempted to blackmail several people for financial gain.

Detective Senior Sergeant Eddie Sutherland says that the sentencing shows that police “along with our partners will not tolerate this abhorrent offending”.

“Police, DIA and Customs have a very close working relationship,” he said.

“The strength of the three agencies working collaboratively means we are more effective when it comes to identifying and bringing to justice those who seek to exploit defenceless and vulnerable children and adults within our community.”

A Covid-19 survey by the New Zealand Business Roundtable in China has found 81 per cent of respondents expect China export revenue to be down at least 10 percent this year.

ational Party leader Simon Bridges has criticised the government’s response to Covid-19, saying the economic response to the outbreak has been sub-par.

He said businesses deserve a signal on where the Budget 2020 is headed so they have confidence the government has a plan if things get worse.

Bridges told RNZ’s Morning Report last Wednesday that middle income earners deserve tax relief as the outbreak persists.

“I think there’s a very strong case for tax relief for middle income earners, those households I’ve said were struggling.”

Bridges wouldn’t say whether he would consider benefit increases to help low-income families in case of an economic downturn.

Bridges said Finance Minister Grant Robertson hasn’t been giving people a clear enough view of the economic outlook.

Dry conditions bring warning

F

ire and Emergency is asking Aucklanders to take extra care after recent fires on lifestyle blocks on the outskirts of the city.

Region manager Ron Devlin says people should avoid activities which can cause a spark like using a chainsaw, mowing lawns, burning rubbish and driving vehicles with hot exhausts through long dry grass - especially during the afternoons, the hottest hours of the day.

“Three fires started on lifestyle blocks around Karaka and Clevedon in the last couple of weeks from sparks caused by machinery work,” he said.

The dryness for this length of time is unusual for Auckland and people are urged to take extra caution. While there has been a little bit of rain, it hasn’t been enough to change the fire risk in Auckland.

“Some of our biggest fires happen in autumn when people mistakenly think the fire risk is less and stop being so careful. There is

still a total fire ban which means no fires are permitted.

“We’ll need a lot of rain to reduce the fire risk and the rain that is forecast is not enough.

“The dry weather is also putting pressure on Auckland’s water supply - especially those on tank water - and we’d rather not have to use this to put out a completely avoidable fire.”

He urges residents wait until conditions become less dangerous and the fire ban is lifted before burning rubbish and doing machinery work on lifestyle blocks.

“We are constantly looking at the conditions and will lift the fire ban as soon as we can. Until then, there shouldn’t be any reason to light a fire,” Devlin said.

he NZ Super Fund and parties associated with Russell Property Group have agreed to buy a significant waterfront land holding in Beachlands which includes the Formosa Golf Course.

The partnership, Beachlands South LP, will be a separate venture to the limited partnership NZ Hotel Holdings Asset LP established last year to acquire hotel assets.

The acquisition comprises around 250 hectares and consolidates the Formosa Golf Course land (170.5 hectares at 110 Jack Lachlan Drive), as well as a property of 80 hectares at 620 Whitford-Maraetai Road.

The Whitford-Maraetai Road site is owned by Pipers Limited Partnership, an associate of Russell Property Group and its investment partners.

NZ Super Fund’s head of direct investments Will Goodwin says, “The new venture provides the fund with exposure to an asset class that it has been evaluating and exploring for some time. This investment creates a high-quality land holding that we will look to add value to over time.

“We are a long-term investor and this acquisition signals our confidence in Auckland’s future growth and commitment to the region.

“In time we will engage with the community and Auckland Council about what kind of high-quality masterplan and associated infrastructure improvement could work for the area.”

Petition to let people pay Inland Revenue by cheque N

ational Party has launched a petition so people can continue to pay Inland Revenue and other Government departments by cheque, National’s Revenue spokesperson Andrew Bayly says.

The Hunua MP says Inland Revenue stopped accepting cheques on March 1. KiwiBank, NZ Post and ACC also no longer accept cheques.

Mr Bayly says since Inland Revenue announced the move, he’s been inundated by complaints from people who have no other way to make payments.

“Many older New Zealanders don’t know how to use internet banking, or don’t want to because they’re concerned about scams.

“People in rural New Zealand don’t necessarily have access to good internet or cell phone coverage, and some people simply don’t own a computer.

“I’ve had one man approach me who is dyslexic. He won’t use internet banking in case he enters the wrong amount and feels

Bayly says Revenue Minister Stuart Nash needs to step up and help these people.

Your view Transgender talk

I applaud recent articles (New Zealand Herald, 28/2 and 0203) concerning the transgender athlete, Laurel Hubbard.

The NZH presents the transgender topic in a fair and balanced manner.

I have not, as yet, heard of people complaining, protesting or in any way taking the NZH to task. Therein lies an issue.

The NZH, through these articles, stimulates public interest and discussion of the topic. The NZH has done what the universities of NZ should be doing, the very institutions “committed” to free expression, muzzle debate.

Recently, Massey cancelled a speaking occasion called “Speak Up for Women”; part of its Feminism 2020 event. Speakers were unable to air views on transgenderism and athletic fairness.

Massey University claims they are “…committed to the values of academic freedom, the freedom of speech and the freedom of expression, as values that lie at the very heart of the tradition of a university and academic inquiry”.

Massey claimed that discussion of transgender sport would “hurt the vulnerable”.

But has the NZH customer base experienced “health and safety” issues since the NZH articles?

Or, are there “actors in bad faith” at our universities - and officials kowtowing to aggressive minority opinion?

There is a public interest in such issues being aired, discussed and resolved. “Silence by threatened violence” on campuses reflects a toxic

and ideological university climate that is unflattering of the institutions, their teaching, diversity of opinion and administration competencies.

Nationally, this type of free discussion should be braved by universities, not quashed.

I note your headline in the Times (February 11) OUT! (water tanks running dry in rural areas) and now realise that although the Auckland Council spouts water conservation, you should see their property Auckland Council/Auckland Transportowned commercial property at 7 Reeves Rd, Pakuranga.

For weeks now the water has run out of the ground and into the stormwater and has done so off and on for years with a few attempts by WaterCare to stop it. They have been told on more than one occasion.

Added to this, since the property became council-owned, it has been a maintenance disgrace. A burnt-

out shop has not been rebuilt but just boarded up and burns/lawns are not maintained.

They’re killing our future’ I took part in the March For Life march against abortion today (March 2) and was encouraged to see the turnout for the march.

Lots of men, women, teenagers and children. I was also impressed with the views of the various people I talked to – doctor, engineer, sportsman etc on the value of life.

Certainly very touching to know that there are very caring people in NZ! The New Conservative Party had a good number of members in the march which indicated that they do place a value on life including life still in the womb. My stand is that if any political party has no regard for those who do not have a voice, then that party will not be getting my vote, and quite a few of my friends feel the same way.

One thing is obvious from the bills cooked up in Parliament, that most parliamentarians can’t see very far ahead. As it is, NZ’s abortion rates are in the tens of thousands annually – at least 13,000 yearly - and to allow late-term abortions is almost turning it into genocide!

Can’t the current parliamentarians see the need for a ‘next generation’ to continue in NZ? If the next generation is reduced, who will be running the country as well as forking out for their superannuation?

NRL marketing simply the best ■■BY JIM BIRCHALL

T

he NRL has launched its new season with a new video which features a spectacular re-working of the Tina Turner classic Simply the best. It got me thinking how much better the NRL does at promoting their game than Super Rugby does.

In the video the nostalgia of grand final yesteryear blends nicely with a modern take on the game, while nodding its head to indigenous culture and their people’s contribution to the game.

The video isn’t without its detractors however. Comments have arisen in the Australian media from disgruntled country folk who don’t feel the ad includes them and focuses too much on the glitz and glamour of the Sydney clubs.

I couldn’t actually remember if Super Rugby had put out a promo video for this year’s competition but after a cursory look on YouTube, I came across a bland, awkward video of players interviewing

The NRL on the other hand has a later start in March. I don’t believe Super Rugby gets the jump on it as the NZR boffins would have you believe. After doing a quick, unscientific poll, it seems people actually prefer that NRL starts six weeks later.

By then everyone seems to have had enough of rugby’s encroachment into their beach time and welcome the arrival of a game that showcases great athletes, close results and the ball being in play for more than 90 seconds at a time.

It’s not like the NRL has a monopoly either. However much they are paying their marketing people, it isn’t enough.

Competing against AFL, A-League, Union, and the increasing popularity of combat sports, they have performed Jesus-level miracles to cement second spot in viewership and squeeze maximum juice from a sport with a minor international profile.

“Walking Netball is a slower version of the game we all love; it is netball, but at a walking pace.”

It originated in England about five years ago and now people all over the world have started playing Walking Netball for the fun, laughter and camaraderie the social session brings, as much as the health benefits on offer.

Walking Netball has been designed so that anyone can play it regardless of age or fitness level. From those who have dropped out of the sport they love due to serious injury, to those who believed they had hung up their netball trainers many years ago, Walking Netball really is for everyone.

The rules are the same as traditional netball with just a few exceptions. She said the obvious one is that everyone must be walking; a player must always have one foot in contact with the court, so no jumping or running is possible.

“Walking Netball sessions are designed to be fun and flexible and largely follow the same format as any other netball session,” Dyason.

Blues go marching on

A

three-game Super Rugby winning streak culminating in a 24-15 victory against the dangerous Hurricanes in Wellington has confirmed the Blues’ longawaited improvement.

The latest, following wins in South Africa against the Bulls and powerful Stormers, demonstrated real character within a strong tackling performance which would have warmed the cockles of defence coach Tana Umaga’s heart.

Especially pleasing was the 13 tackles made by Akira Ioane in his first start of the season following the heroics of Hoskins Sotutu.

Looking much fitter and hungrier than he did in last year’s Mitre 10 for Auckland, Ioane looked as though he wants to realise his enormous potential by increasing his workload.

He’s a naturally-talented attacker but his laziness and failure to bend his back hurt his All Black prospects last year.

Sotutu’s outstanding form appears to have motivated Ioane into becoming the best he can be.

Along with electric wing Mark Telea he scored one of the Blues three tries, the third a penalty try which sealed the Hurricanes’ fate when Jordie Barrett was sin-binned for a premedicated knock-on.
