usan Richards, at 63, had hoped to be in her new Pine Harbour townhouse by now, preparing for retirement and thinking of ways to enjoy her idyllic spot by the sea. The dream has gone now with news the development she’d signed up for isn’t going ahead. What it means instead is that Sue will have to work a few extra years to cover the cost blow-out while she tries to find a new home. She was meant to be moving in January which would have meant a nearly-mortgage free Sue would have been shelling out $150 a week for her new place. With that dashed, she instead is eating her reserves with rent of $400 per week. While she has her name down for a new townhouse development in the area, the cost and time to build will erode her savings even further. “I’ve put my name down (for a new townhouse). It hasn’t even gone on the market,” she told the Times. “It could be another 12 months before they’ve finished.” She believes she can still achieve her goal. “I basically was going to be freehold...now at my age... She’ll now have to cough up another $90,000 for a total of $785,000. “I had a certain amount I’d put aside for retirement – it’s been gobbled up. “Instead of retiring in two or three years, that will be pushed out until I’m 70.”

Snowed under Winter came to Highbrook on Monday – and most of the kids (and grown-ups) loved it. Active Explorer Early Childcare Centre director Janine Baker said 2 tonnes of snow was brought in and dumped at the Kerwyn Ave site for the children’s first snow day. “We’re trying to create a sense of community in the middle of a business district,” Janine said. All 142 children – including the youngest at six months frolicked in the white stuff. “They were all kitted out including our very own penguin Nanny Deb.”

Landlord of Parliament speaks up ■■By Farida Master
D
avid Carter has witnessed many ministers make or destroy their reputations. His job entails playing referee at Parliament. When temperatures are rising and things are getting out of control, Mr Carter - Speaker of the House of Representatives - steps in to say enough is enough. In Botany on Friday at the invitation of Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross who has been bringing senior politicians to the area, Mr Carter had flown in from Christchurch to visit a local business. Dropping in at the Times’ office after visiting GMP Pharmaceuticals in East Tamaki, Mr Carter says he is very impressed with the kind of investment the leading manufacturing company is making. “(Managing director) Karl Ye now plans to make an added investment in New Zealand for which they will employ 400 more staff,” he says. The man with the third most important job in the country says that a lot of people don’t have a clue about what the Speaker of the House of Representatives really does. He intends to return to this area next month at the invitation of the Pakuranga Rotary Club and also address schools about the ceremonial role of a speaker. “My dad had been a councillor in Christchurch for 40 years. It was at a time when councillors didn’t get paid,” he says.

“My father sparked my interest in politics. I first stood for elections in 1993 and lost. But then I won the by-election (in 1994) and that’s what Jami-Lee and I have in common,” he says. He held many ministerial portfolios over 20 years. “I was sort of the lone ranger then. But in hindsight, it helps to build resilience,” he says. Talking about his apolitical role as speaker, he says his job is to “measure the tone and temperature, and sense things when they are moving out of control in Parliament. “There are times when people
are yelling and tempers have flared. This year I have asked people to leave the Chamber twice and that is a really good record. “I do understand that everyone is striving to push their point, especially if you have been in opposition and not been in power for a long time, it can get quite frustrating.” “My role is much wider than people think. As the Landlord of the Parliament, I am responsible for the security and upkeep of the property as well as engaging people.” The Speaker technically owns all of Parliament’s grounds and buildings — Parliament House, the
Parliamentary Library, the Beehive, and the lease on Bowen House. “There are around 100,000 people who come to Parliament every year,” he says about the second largest tourist attraction after Te Papa Museum in Wellington. “It’s my job to see that the Parliament is well resourced. “I also have an international role of meeting up with dignitaries before they meet the Prime Minister. “New Zealand has the best democratic system in the world. It is recognised as transparent, accountable and corruption-free. It’s my job to keep it that way.
“It would also mean that New Zealand’s democratic system is a model for the world to share because I am doing my job right.” The keen aviator and a marathon runner, who has run the Paris and New York marathons, says he doesn’t take parliamentary battles home with him to Christchurch. “I have a pilot’s license and like spending time with my family. My youngest boy is only 13,” he says. Having transitioned from a long-time politician to being an impartial referee that moderates heated debates whilst observing parliamentary rules and tradition, Mr Carter says he is not there to give the government an easy ride. “I am apolitical and give Labour Party and Green Party and everyone else a fair go, provided they go by the rules and don’t do anything unparliamentary. I remind myself of it every day that I am not affiliated to the National Party,” he says. “I am not a part of the caucus and have no role in policy making. I constantly strive to maintain the line of duty.” The list member for the National Party hopes to continue as Speaker of the House in the next term and admits there may be fireworks in the next month of Parliament. “There will be a lot of tension there. It will be the four toughest weeks simply because of the proximity to the elections.” But he loves every moment of it. “I pinch myself every day that I have got this job which is a huge privilege.”

e almost didn’t take the call. Being in a rural area with destruction all around him and out of cell phone range, Winton Dalley, the Mayor of quakehit Hurunui in South Island cannot thank his stars enough for taking the call. “Is this for real? Are they from Mars?” was the first thought that crossed his mind as Craig Glover, head of Strategy at Auckland Civil Defence, was trying to explain to him that the Tzu Chi Foundation in East Tamaki wanted to donate around $125,000 in prepaid cash cards. Visiting the Tzu Chi Buddhist Compassion Relief Foundation on Tuesday, Mayor Winton and his wife Jean are grateful to the foundation for their compassion, love and trust invested in them during one of the worst disasters when people lost their homes and everything they worked for all their lives. At a small gathering organised by Councillor Sharon Stewart, who chairs the Auckland Council’s Civil Defence and Emergency Management Committee, and attended by volunteers of the foundation as well as members of the Resilience and Welfare Auckland Civil Defence Emergency Management, Mr Winton admits that after spending 20 hours in remote, worst-hit areas he was really glad he took the phone call. The local government event was held for the Mayors of the regions affected by recent emergencies in

The foundation has provided close to $500,000 of assistance to communities of Kaikoura, Hurunui and Edgecumbe in the past year as well as to those affected by floods in Auckland in March. “I did wonder why Auckland Council was interested in helping a small place like Hurunui. “It took me almost a week to realise it was a serious offer,” says Mr Winton. “Though your gift was turned down by the bureaucracy and we were told we couldn’t accept it by the authorities, I am so thankful that this is the beginning of a longlasting relationship.” Following the recent earthquakes in Kaikoura and Hurunui and flooding in Edgecumbe, the
Auckland Civil Defence department at Auckland Council stepped up and played an important role in linking the foundation with the mayors of the region to facilitate donations. Mrs Stewart, who was first approached by the Tzu Chi Foundation (which has branches in 60 countries and has assisted more than 90 nations struck by natural disasters) says that when the volunteers of the non-profit charitable organisation approached her saying they wanted to help, she didn’t realise it was going to be such a generous gift. “I thought they wanted to give $500 or a $1000 or maybe $10,000. I was blown away when they said they would like to give Prezzy cards worth $125,000.

People couldn’t believe they were getting cash to help them out during some of the toughest times of their life. “There was no judgment, no questions and no long tedious forms to fill up,” he says. “No other offers came close to the understanding you showed. “So much happens in an emergency. Though a lot of it is out of our control, sometimes the worst disasters provide us with so many opportunities. “We need to appreciate the good things as something amazing and unexpected comes out of it.”

“We were told by the government and Inland Revenue that it is not possible to accept the gift so we decided to approach the mayors of the districts affected by the earthquake and worked through the bureaucracy,” she says. “This collaboration highlights the value in working together to support affected communities across New Zealand,” says Mrs Stewart. Volunteers of the foundation share heart-warming stories of people benefitting from distributing 250 cash relief cards of $500 each. he first time Joshua McKenzie heard the birds sing, he was confused. He wasn’t sure what it was - only to see tears well up in his mother’s eyes. “It was quite an emotional time for me,” says Joshua’s mum, Michelle Shepherd. “I thought he always knew what bird song was like till I saw that quizzical look on his face.” At the age of six, the Farm Cove Intermediate student was diagnosed with 60 per cent hearing loss in one ear and 40 per cent loss in the other. “He used to struggle with learning but unfortunately the hearing tests we did earlier didn’t pick up on anything,” she says. Michelle says Joshua wasn’t engaged in school as he found it difficult to pick up things and missed out on social cues. “He would miss out on the tone of the voice when he was little. “He couldn’t recognise if someone was being annoyed with him. Often it is the tone you use that gives an indication of what you mean.” While the hearing aids make a huge difference, there are still times when Joshua can mishear things if there are other conversations happening simultaneously, says Michelle. “People make a mistake thinking just because he has hearing aids he can hear everything. But what they don’t realise is that there can be a lot of interruptions. “It’s important that people be more patient with those with a hearing loss and spend more

time with them. “There needs to be clarity. You need to confirm that they have heard it right,” she says speaking out of experience. Michelle strongly recommends that people with a hearing impairment should wear hearing aids even though I realise the cost is quite high. “Fortunately it is funded, there are government subsidies
available for under-18 and there are cheaper options available too,” she says. “However once they leave school there are less subsidies which can be difficult for people who are not working.” Thirteen-year-old Joshua says his advice to other children with a hearing problem is, “If you can’t hear, use your other senses. Also, don’t be afraid to ask them to repeat themselves if you haven’t heard properly.” He says he is thrilled that the National Foundation for the Deaf is creating awareness by hosting the Silent Leadership Challenge which he hopes his class will participate in. “It will be great if my class does the muffled challenge with hearing protectors and can experience what it feels like. “Though I don’t think my teacher will like it with a roomful of me,” he says. To enable him to hear better in the classroom, Joshua uses the Frequency Modular System with a Roger Pen. It allows the teacher to speak into the pen, a wireless microphone that transmits the sound straight into Joshua’s hearing aid—bypassing noise and distance. He also thinks that learning martial arts from the age of six has been a big positive. “Being a Brown Belt has heightened my state of awareness. With martial arts I don’t have to worry about hearing. I know I am safe and have something to protect me.” A special message he has for the Times readers is: “I want people to remember that we are not different. We are just like them.”

Rebellious take on the world ■■By Therese Henkin Howick’s very own hip-hop crew, Rebellious are taking the dancing world by storm as they prep to perform on the world stage in Phoenix, Arizona this August. The Crew, who will be representing New Zealand at the Hip Hop International World Championships, say they couldn’t be more excited to compete against the world’s best dancers. “This has been our goal since we started this crew, and it’s so exciting to be able to say we got here. I’m most excited to go there and just try our best and see if we can get a place in the finals,” says crew leader, Gemma Whitford-Joynt. Rebellious, who have only been together since February last year, still have to get through the preliminary judging in Phoenix before
they are selected to compete in the finals. “My wish for them is that they make it to finals. But this is a tough competition and judges come from all over the world and they all like what they like. “The challenge is trying to convince them that even if they don’t like the styles that you’re dancing, you’re doing it so well that they can’t deny you deserve a spot in the finals,” says red Studio director, Kiri Whitford-Joynt. “It’s tricky when you’re little to be brave enough and daring enough to do this. But the crew should feel proud no matter what happens because it’s really a privilege to be going at all. Here in New Zealand, where I believe we have the best dancers in the world, there is so much competition to qualify for world champs.” Helping the crew to achieve
their dancing dream is an internationally recognised teaching team led by by Kiel Tutin with Shyvon Campbell, Christa Albert and Todd Williamson, with whom they have been training with for hours each day. Not only have the dancers been spending hours practicing each day, they have also been preparing for a fundraising showcase to help raise the $15,000 needed to send the crew over to the States. This will cover the cost of accommodation, flights, training venue, rental van transportation, entry fees and costumes as well as the hire of a rental van and a studio. Characters shine at Rotary Changeover I t was straight out of a story book. In the celebratory month of Rotary changeovers where the change of Presidents of different Rotary Clubs in New Zealand is conducted with great ceremony and fanfare, the Rotary Club of Somerville had a fancy do at The Lounge in Howick. With the dress theme of English children’s literature character, the Lounge provided a perfect backdrop with a secret cupboard door opening up into the bar and an eclectic
lounge, creating an Alice in Wonderland-esque atmosphere. There was a lot of festivity as outgoing president Vinod Sareen handed over the ceremonial golden chains to incoming president Andrew Harvey who spoke about social, environmental and literacy projects that the club will be focussing on in the coming year. “We will be having fun whilst raising funds and be professional in everything
we do,” he said. Andrew introduced the 2017/2018 board of directors which included “a witch, Alice in Wonderland, two Winnie the Pooh Bears and a hunted bear, Mr Potts and Truly Scrumptious.” The evening was MCd by the dapper Rotarian Tony Peacock who some members mistook for James Bond 007. They also had past District Governor of Rotary District 9920 Jennie Herring as a guest speaker.

wo Bucklands Beach Intermediate Students have been named as semi-finalists in this year’s Maggi Pop-Up Kitchen Showdown. Stephanie Chong and Amy Xlong were “very surprised” to discover they’d made the cut with their quinoa salad creation. The cooking competition is now in its eighth year and encourages healthy cooking and eating habits for 11-16 year olds. Dishes must include the use of at least 1 Maggi Recipe Base from a select list, be a balanced main course with around half the plate consisting of fibrous vegetables, one quarter being a lean protein source and another quarter made up of a starchy carbohydrate such as potatoes, rice or pasta. The meal must serve a family of four people, cost a maximum of $20 to make and be able to be made and plated in 30 minutes. Stephanie and Amy were officially announced as the first semi-finalists on TVNZ’s The Adam and Eve Show yesterday afternoon. They said it was “amazing” to be surprised with the news at school after their teacher told them Fresh Choice supermarket would be coming to drop off some ingredients for them – but a television camera crew showed up instead. They were inspired to make

their creation by a former teammate’s family recipe for quinoa before the third team member quit the Maggi competition to pursue choir. The recipe started off as a quinoa salad before adding to it with sauce and a garnish of kale chips. Food Technology teacher Beth McCrystal said it was a “wonderful, amazing” achievement for the girls. “They had no idea – when the crew turned up and I told them to go and answer the door, they
started screaming and shouting and carrying on.” Mrs McCrystal said the competition is a great way to encourage students to get creative in the kitchen and to try out new ingredients and flavour combinations. This is the second year in a row BBI has made the semifinals with Mrs McCrystal at the helm – last year’s team came in first overall – and she said it was “pretty special” to make it this far again. Six semi-finalists are
announced, with three teams making it to the Grand Final in Christchurch where competitors will take to the kitchen in a Masterchef-type challenge that’s nerve wracking for both teachers and students alike, said Mrs McCrystal. “The kids go into the kitchen and have 30 minutes to do it all [while] we go into another room. We don’t get to see anything until the end.” The winning school is awarded $5000 while each winning student receives $250.
Powerball’s winning streak continued on Saturday night with a player winning $8 million with Powerball First Division in Saturday’s live Lotto draw. The $8 million prize is made up of $7 million from Powerball First Division and $1 million from Lotto First Division. The winning ticket was sold at Botany New World in Auckland. Your view Race Unity Speech
As regional coordinator of the Race Unity Speech Awards, I was thrilled to see the coverage of the presentation of the shields to Mortaza Sahar and his school, Pakuranga College. Mortaza was certainly a worthy winner of this year’s Auckland regional competition with his thought-provoking speech which drew on some of his personal experiences of racism. With his win, Mortaza became the 17th student to be awarded the Auckland shield since the competition was initiated by the Zealand Baha’i Community in 2001. It began after a series of nasty raciallymotivated incidents which deeply concerned an Auckland Baha’i, Hedi Moani, who subsequently consulted with the Race Relations Office to see what could be done. A “Unity in Diversity Rally” held in Aotea Square lead to further discussions with the Race Relations Office, and resulted in Race Relations Day being established in New Zealand in March 1999. Sadly, though, Hedi was tragically killed just a few months before the event was first held in this country. The Speech Awards were initiated in his memory and are held in support of Race Relations Day. The competition – which now runs in nearly every part of the country – neatly encompasses three things that were dear to Hedi’s heart: fostering positive race relations, oratory, and youth. Congratulations to Mortaza for his part in promoting positive race relations in Aotearoa New Zealand. Hedi would be proud of you for your part in continuing his legacy. The New Zealand Police have been the principal sponsors of the competition since 2008, with other sponsorship coming from the Human Rights Commission, the Hedi Moani Charitable Trust and the Office of Ethnic Communities. Melody helps leprosy patients ■■By Therese Henkin
A
n aspiring teacher is on a mission to lift the stigma around leprosy. Melody Yong, a youth advocate for Leprosy Mission New Zealand, says a recent trip to Nepal to learn about Leprosy and help those affected has changed her life.
“This trip has opened my eyes to a disease that affects so many people, and it has heartbreaking consequences for those suffering from it,” says the Pakuranga resident. “Leprosy sufferers are often cast out of their families and communities and most doctors are scared of treating leprosy affected

Yet here in New Zealand, many people don’t even know that leprosy still exists.” Yong admits that she too was ignorant about the disease before her advocacy mission, but hopes to change the perception of leprosy in New Zealand and around the world. “When I first heard about leprosy, I thought it was some ancient, biblical disease that was long gone.” The University of Auckland student says she has since learnt that someone is newly diagnosed with leprosy every few minutes and millions around the world are suffering from it. “I want to inform people that leprosy has a cure, and people don’t have to suffer forever.” Although treatment is now fully funded by the World Health Organisation, Yong says communities affected by Leprosy still believe it to be a curse cast upon you for a wrongdoing. This age-old stigma forces leprosy sufferers to hide their symptoms from

fear of being shunned and they often receive treatment too late. Alongside eight other advocates for Leprosy Mission New Zealand, Yong volunteered in Anandaban hospital, which specialises in the treatment of leprosy affected patients, with the aim to break down stigma and empower people affected by leprosy to stand up for
their rights. “We went on ward rounds with doctors, meeting the patients and listening to their stories, many of which are heartbreaking. “I met this old lady who had lost many of her fingers to leprosy, but she could still knit. And I’d watch her knit, and even though there was a massive language barrier, she taught me how to knit. It’s wonderful how little you need to connect with someone,” she says. Yong observed surgeries that helped restore movement in the hands of leprosy sufferers whose have suffered severe nerve damage, and watched leprosy sufferers undergo rehabilitation to prepare them for re-entering the community. She says one of her most important roles was venturing out to isolated communities in Kathmandu and talking to the villagers about leprosy. The Leprosy Mission New Zealand advocates are still in the process of raising $30,000 for a digital X-ray machine to improve the medical facilities at Anandaban Hospital. The winner of the 11th Estuary Art and Ecology People’s Choice Award has been presented to audience favourite, Arielle Walker. Walker’s entry, ‘Colour Alchemy - Map of the Tamaki Estuary’ was an innovative response to the theme, using dyes extracted from various plants found in the estuary to naturally colour bundles of wool which was knitted together to create a ‘map’ of the estuary. Alongside the artwork, Walker included a handbook, detailing with drawings and notes the diverse range of flora incorporated in the work, which she refers to as the ‘key’ to the map. The artist won $1000, donated by the Rice Family Partnership.

third (34 per cent) of investors believe that property prices will decline, three times more than the proportion who feel that prices could rise as a result. ➤ Impact on rental property rent Nearly two-thirds (68 per cent) of investors stated that they will increase rents to some extent if this policy was implemented, with 47 per cent of investors planning to increase rents by more than 3 per cent. On the other hand, 25 per cent of investors wouldn’t plan to increase rents. ➤ Using an insulation or heating grant for residential properties More than half of investors (56
per cent) stated that they are not interested in using the proposed insulation or heating grant as they believe their properties are already up to an adequate standard. While 28 per cent of investors said they are somewhat or very interested in the proposed grants. ➤ Housing affordability income levels vs rental and sales prices (Auckland vs NZ) A simple ratio of weekly rental prices to weekly household income shows how rental affordability has changed over time. The larger the number, the greater the proportion of weekly income that is spent on rent. Similarly, we can look
at ratio of median sales prices to annual household income to understand the affordability of purchasing property. The larger the number, the more unaffordable the properties are. Across New Zealand the proportion of income spent on rent has remained relatively stable over the last 6 years, this trend is also consistent in Auckland. In Auckland, affordability decreased substantially between 2011-2015, anecdotally consistent with the Auckland housing market boom. However, housing affordability has remained relatively stable between 2015-2016.

New kitchen works perfectly on old footprint Janette and the entire family are enjoying the sleek new kitchen.
The new kitchen created by Jag Kitchens for the Elliott Family of Cockle Bay has beautifully blended aspects of the old with the new. The stunning new cabinetry and fittings in Arctic White were built on the footprint of the old kitchen and really complement the existing character ceiling – complete with rafters and wooden floors. “Everything is so modern and accessible, but I’m glad we retained the wooden ceilings and floors as they work so perfectly with the new style,” Janette Elliot says. She lives in the smart 80s brick and tile home with her husband, Brent, and their two adult children. When the Elliotts moved into their home, the kitchen benches were very low to cater for the original owner, who was short. Brent is particularly tall and short term they raised the bench height with the addition of some Formica tops. By the time they started researching a new kitchen; it was all looking
very dated and the wooden cabinetry particularly well-worn. Jag Kitchen designer, Frances Fothergill and the Elliotts are all delighted with the new look and a very functional kitchen. “We modernised the look totally with all the cabinetry in Artic White melamine, minimalistic Tirane handles recessed into the top of the doors and a chunky engineered stone benchtop (50mm Smart stone Gelsomino) in white with a lightly speckled effect. The old pantry with louvre doors was replaced by a smart Blum Space Tower with drawers,” explains Frances. “And instead of a small island bench, we transformed the space by adding a waterfall end at the end of the kitchen bench. Connected to this we added some lower cabinets with a benchtop overhang on three sides to form a table large enough to seat six.” A new glass splashback was added and the paintwork refreshed with Resene’s Rice Cake – giving the place a peaceful ambience.
“It’s much more appealing to make a meal in this new kitchen with everything you need close at hand – including a special drawer for oils and another for spices. The Space Tower also gives amazing access to the pantry items as the five drawers have fully extending runners.” Janette enjoyed working with Frances and the team at Jag Kitchens and found the service they offered was very good. “I loved the process of showing designs in 3D. This made a huge difference as it is so much easier than looking at a flat plan. I find it hard to imagine the end results from just a plan, but we could take away the actual 3D pictures and look at them at home and imagine the new kitchen in our space.” Jag Kitchens specialise in custom-designed kitchens and has its own manufacturing plant. ome advantage should help the Crusaders win their Super Rugby semi-final against the Chiefs on Saturday, but I doubt it will give the Lions the edge they hope for against the visiting Hurricanes in Johannesburg on Sunday. When it came down to the nitty gritty on a rain-soaked Christchurch turf last weekend the Crusaders forward pack, with seven starting All Blacks, carried too much for the brave but outgunned Highlanders with a 17-0 victory. Although the Crusaders were kept scoreless in the second half, their tight defence and the slow track bogged down the attacking threat posed by champion Highlander game-breakers Ben Smith and Waisake Naholo. That could also be the fate of Aaron Cruden, Damian McKenzie and James Lowe this Saturday night unless Brodie Retallick and Ben Cane can inspire the Chiefs forwards to achieve something close to parity against the Crusaders mean machine. Owen Franks and Joe Moody don’t rate as champion ball carrying props, but they are tremendous scrummagers and stout tacklers who never shirk the hard yakka. captain of the Crusaders, gifted lock Sam Whitelock has performed tremendously well. With Ryan Crotty and Isaac Luke the experienced hands of the backline, the development of young Richie Mo’unga, Jack Goodhew, George Bridges and David Havili has been a revelation. But with Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Cruden, Lowe and highly regarded coach Dave Rennie accepting lucrative offers to move overseas, the Chiefs are eager to give them the perfect farewell. Certainly they are better than their 17-11 quarter-final result against the Stormers suggests. However that long flight home from Cape Town and a heavy track could take its toll against a resolute Crusaders outfit who take no prisoners. Much as I admire the Lions break away from South Africa’s traditional
power game to embrace 15-man rugby, it will be a tragedy if they win this year’s championship. The reason is they have made the semi-finals without facing one New Zealand team. Furthermore, they can count themselves lucky to have got there after Sharks fullback Lwazi Mvovo gifted them their quarter-final when his blatant offside in the dying minutes allowed Ryan Combrinck to convert a magnificent 55m penalty for a narrow 23-21 victory. A minute earlier fullback Mvovo was caught in possession when trying to run the ball when a kick deep into the Lions 22 would have earned his team an upset win on the back of a strong forward performance. The Lions are better than that. But they face a much more dangerous backline in a Hurricanes side that boasts All Blacks PJ Perenara, the Barrett brothers, Julian Savea and Nehe Milner-Skudder. Interestingly it was non-All Black right wing Wes Goosen with his two tries, the first of which was a glorious sidestepping burst past three defenders, who was the star performer in the team’s 35-16 away win against the Brumbies. Main makes world championship final Former Macleans College student Corey Main has qualified for the men’s 100m backstroke final at the world championships in Budapest. He was the only New Zealand swimmer to make a final. The 22-year-old recorded a personal best of 53.76 seconds in the semi-final to qualify as the eighth fastest on Tuesday NZ Chris Boyd’s faith in him. And with Vince Aso available for next Sunday’s clash after scoring 14 tries before being sidelined with injury, the Lions defence will need
time – beating his earlier time of 53.97 seconds. It’s the first time he’s qualified for a final at a major meet since bowing out in the semi-finals at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Olympic silver medallist Xu Jiayu was the fastest qualifier with a time of 52.44 seconds.
