ccupants of an Ormiston house have escaped a house fire unhurt. Firecomm, the NZ FireService communications unit, told the Times the fire was at a two-storey home at 394 Ormiston Road on
Sunday at around 5pm. One bedroom was involved and all persons were accounted for, FireComm said. This latest fire brings back memories of an horrific fire in December in Plantation Avenue in Ormiston which shocked

ix thieves made off with an undisclosed amount of jewellery after breaking in to Michael Hill at Botany Town Centre early Monday morning. The store was cordoned off and a security guard was stationed in front of the store on Monday before the broken window was boarded up. Anchor said the thieves were able access the store with vehicles by driving through a strengthened gate. She declined to say how often burglaries occurred at the Centre but said generally between two and seven security guards are on site at one time. The vehicles have all been located by police.

Simeon Brown is the National Party candidate for Pakuranga. He says he is proud to call himself an Aucklander, having lived here since he moved from Rotorua where he was born. He married his wife Rebecca in 2016 and together they bought their first home last year. Mr Brown graduated from Auckland University with a degree in Law and Commerce. Since graduating he has worked in commercial banking for a major New Zealand Bank based in Highbrook. He also has a background in local government, and experience working for constituents and delivering results. Mr Brown says he would be honoured to be Pakuranga’s voice in Parliament.

A student of Botany Downs Primary, Howick Intermediate, Pakuranga College she went on to do a BA (Hons) in Screen Production and a Diploma of Language in Maori. With a background in arts, theatre, film and photography as well as a history of participating in social activism, Ms Zhu says she has always stood up for what is right. The freelance producer, standing for the Green Party in the Botany electorate believes the Greens stand on the side of justice, doing what’s best for the planet and people.
Mr Mamedov whose grandmother had ingrained in him that taking care of people as if they are your own family members, is of utmost importance. ➤ Guy Hunt – Green Party candidate for Pakuranga Guy Hunt is a businessman and an advocate for sustainability. Over the past 12 years he has spent time working in both New Zealand and the UK in a number of industries. He is a Chartered Accountant working as CFO at a large retailer. Mr Hunt says, “long term change is needed and I am the person to drive it.” He says both he and the Green Party have a vision for Pakuranga and Botany for the future while retaining the suburbs heritage. He says that includes better transport through light rail and public transport, better crime prevention, more affordable housing, tackling poverty and “the biggest threat to us, climate change.”
➤ Tofik Mamedov –Labour Party candidate for Botany Tofik Mamedov arrived in New Zealand from Azerbaijan as a young lad. War between Armenia and Azerbaijan had made his birth country a dangerous place. Life wasn’t easy when he emigrated along with his mum and sister. His interest in politics was sparked by a meeting with MP Judith Tizard. It was at her office that he met Theresa Colgan who invited him to join the Labour Party. He says he’s “proud to be part of the team that’s delivering”. ➤ Wetex Kang - Maori Party candidate for the Botany Wetex Kang, of Malay and Chinese descent, is the Maori Party candidate for the Botany electorate. Mr Kang is an expharmacist and nutritionist with 21 years’ experience in the health and wellness industry in New Zealand. He is also a beekeeper. “I’m excited to be running for the Maori Party. This candidacy symbolises a historical moment where the tangata whenua of Aotearoa can formally express manaakitanga (aroha, hospitality, generosity and mutual respect) to all immigrants who’ve arrived in this beautiful land since the 1800s,” said Mr Kang. His campaign will focus on immigration, cultural integration, law and order, green energy and health. ➤ Barry Kirker - Labour Party candidate for Pakuranga Barry Kirker is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice. He was Labour’s candidate in the 2014 election, being a Pakuranga
local for a number of years. Mr Kirker is running on a platform of improving access to health (particularly mental health) and specialist education services, as well as on increased opportunities for people to have the security of owning their own home, and people working for wages they can live off or small business prosperity. Mr Kirker is married with one child. In his spare time he is involved in local sporting clubs including coaching his daughter’s football team. ➤ Damian Light – United Future candidate for Botany Damian Light currently lives in Botany with his wife and has lived and worked in Auckland his entire life. He says he is standing for parliament because he’s passionate about strong communities and wants New Zealand to be the best place to live, work and raise a family. Mr Light has worked for large iconic NZ organisations for more than a decade, at various levels including management. “My work involves understanding
issues, listening to and understanding different views, convincing people, representing other’s needs and coming up with outcomes that benefit everyone. “These skills and experiences will help me represent Botany in parliament.” Mr Light says he’s standing with UnitedFuture for a better deal for future generations. ➤ Andrew Bayly – National MP for Hunua Andrew Bayly has been MP for Hunua since 2014. He currently serves as chair of the Local Government and Environment Select Committee and sits on the Finance and Expenditure Committee. Prior to entering Parliament, he was self-employed with businesses involved in finance and sustainable development. Since being elected, his key focus has been to improve access to good health services, support key local businesses, and lobby for infrastructure improvements. This advocacy has led to the Government’s announcement of a third main line between Wiri and Westfield. At a personal level, he’s always been passionate about the outdoors and last year completed a trek to the North Pole with his eldest son.
➤ Ian Cummings – Independent candidate for Hunua A local family man, Ian Cummings is general manager of a company managing and operating major hazardous facilities. He also serves on the Pukekohe Christian School board as chairman. Mr Cummings believes he has the right leadership and life skillset to effectively represent the voters of the Hunua electorate. “While most people are not interested in politics, politics does not return the favour. “I am an advocate for a reduction of politics in our every-day lives. “By entering parliament as an Independent MP I would bring real change to the political landscape, blissfully free of establishment party politics and political correctness,” he says. ➤ Baljit Kaur – Labour Party candidate for Hunua Baljit Kaur is chair of the New Zealand Sikh Women’s Association, an organisation that provides support for women and children who are victims of
domestic violence in South and East Auckland communities. Ms Kaur currently works as a medical underwriter for Southern Cross Health Society and believes that the Hunua electorate is experiencing growth pains. “The issues that I consider crucial are concerning seniors and youth,” she says. “I am excited to be the candidate for Labour in the Hunua electoratetogether we can focus on bringing a positive change to New Zealand. Let’s do this!” ➤ Anthony Smith – ACT Party candidate for Hunua Anthony Smith is a software developer and a graduate in Computer Science from AUT. He has been involved in the ACT Party for the past six years since joining during his study at University. Mr Smith is standing this election because he believes that ACT is the only party that has sensible policies on Housing and Education. ACT’s education policy on Charter Schools has made a significant difference in the lives of young New Zealanders. Mr Smith currently lives in Pukekohe and has previously lived in other parts of the electorate.

Leaders unite for hearing impaired I
t is not very often that you see a roomful of people having breakfast with hearing protectors on. Around 30 people gathered at The Lounge on Friday morning for a breakfast hosted by Chris and Tony Bull, the creative couple behind the boutique event centre in Howick. As a part of the Silent Leadership Challenge hosted by The National Foundation for the Deaf, the breakfast was hosted for companies including Bay Audiology Howick, Total Focus, Echo Barrier, Supply Force, Bull Electrical and Spillers Hammer Hardware that participated in the challenge. People struggled a bit to savour the lovely brekkie and
have a conversation across the table with the hearing protectors on. Lisa Talbot, project coordinator of the Silent Leadership Challenge for corporate and community leaders, acknowledged the role that local companies played in raising funds, including the Times newspaper that raised awareness for the hearing impaired with a series of articles. She was happy that after having read the articles in the Times, individuals called to take on the Silent Leadership Challenge. Funds raised will help sustain The National Foundation for the Deaf’s advocacy, prevention and support work.

‘He saved a life on Friday’ ■■By Therese Henkin
A
Pakuranga local is being hailed a hero for his quick thinking following the Gossamer Liquor store theft. Robert Walters arrived at the store on Friday afternoon, just minutes after the theft, to find the store owner collapsed on the concrete outside the store. “I saw glass all over the road and when I got out of my car, that’s when I saw a man collapsed on the ground,” he says. “He was having a heart attack.” He says when he arrived the storeowner had a weak pulse and didn’t appear to be breathing. “My instincts just kicked in. I yelled for help and the other store owners ran out. Neither had a phone so I used my own to call an ambulance. I started performing CPR and John, the neighbour from next door, ran out and assisted in the CPR, which the ambulance driver says might have been what saved his life.” Walters, who has completed basic first aid training in the past, says emergency services advised them to keep up the compressions until the ambulance arrived. Walters says according to a neighbour, the store owner had run out after three suspects and thrown a brick at the getaway car window before he collapsed. Paramedics performed CPR on the owner for about 20 minutes, Walters said, before he was rushed off to Auckland City Hospital in critical condition. The store owner’s nephew, Charhampal Singh says, “[Robert]

saved a life on Friday and we are very grateful.” Singh says they will be improving the shop security as well as installing security cameras outside the store. This is not the first time the store has been targeted. The Gossamer Liquor store was robbed at gunpoint in February which Counties Manukau Police posted on Facebook at the time. “It’s hard to survive. We have to be constantly alert, watching outside, being prepared for who will come into the store. It’s major pressure,” Singh says. “We can’t do much if there is somebody suspicious in our store. Often there are two or three of them
and there is only one of us.” Singh says the only way to prevent these robberies is to have an increased police presence in the area, particularly at night. “At night time it’s really dark and quiet in this area, it’s easy for robbers to attack. We need police patrolling this area more often than they do, which would help a lot in scaring attackers away.” Howick Police Sergeant Brett Meale says Police have spoken with the driver of the getaway car. “We are following some lines of enquiry to identify the two males who entered the liquor shop and stole the liquor,” he says.

Beachlands cat shot ■■By Therese Henkin The search is on to find the person responsible for shooting a cat with a slug gun in Beachlands last weekend. A givealittle page has been set up as a reward fund, which will be paid out to anyone who provides information that leads to the conviction and prosecution of the person responsible. The page was set up by Manukau After Hours Veterinary Clinic after staff treated one-year-old tuxedo cat Richie, who arrived at the clinic in a critical condition, struggling to breathe, lethargic and refusing to eat. An X-ray showed three slug gun pellets underneath Richie’s skin, one of which had punctured a lung causing internal bleeding. Niki Hotter, Manukau After Hours Clinic staff member, says they suspect the attack was deliberate. “One pellet could mean it was an accident, but three means that somebody was most likely aiming at Richie. I would hate to think there is somebody out there that is using our cats for target practice.” Hotter says slug gun wounds are becoming an increasing problem, with another cat arriving at the clinic a few days after Richie with one slug gun pellet
under the skin. She says she hopes this isn’t the outcome of negative attitudes towards cats. Beachlands resident and Richie’s owner Gillian Richards says she is devastated to know somebody intentionally hurt her pet. “I was shocked and mildly angry when the vet told me there was one slug gun pellet, but when I heard there were three and it was quite apparent that it was deliberate act to hurt him, I was furious and sickened to think that someone would do this,” she says. With Richie now recovering at home, Richards says she is determined to find out who is behind the attack. As well as helping track down the perpetrator, the After Hours vet clinic contributed significantly to the cost of Richie’s more than $2000 treatment. Hotter says the givealittle page is having great success with more than $1500 already raised and donations coming from as far away as an SPCA officer in the United Kingdom. The temple borders the land owned by The Salvation Army, where the Army plans to build its Flat Bush Corps. Reaching out to each other in order to help the community in Flat Bush, the temple was keen to learn about the initiatives to support children
and address poverty. Territorial commander Mr Westrupp introduced the work they do in New Zealand followed by the heads of various departments present who spoke about varied services The Salvation Army offers. Both the Abbess and the territorial commander expressed their willingness to help and work together as they share a similar purpose of serving the community in the areas of their need.
Lieutenants Ameet and Jessica Londhe shared the demography of Flat Bush and the various initiatives that have been started locally in Flat Bush including social services, Justice of Peaces service, free English classes every Thursday and the Sunday worship services at Baverstock Oaks School. The meeting ended with the territorial commander praying for the Abbess and the assurance of continuing relationship both on the local and national level.

lison Smith, a long-term Maraetai resident and felt designer extraordinaire, initially studied home science at Otago University and specialised in design textiles. This led to a career as a secondary school teacher, teaching clothing, home science and chemistry for some years. Then, as a young mother, Alison taught adult evening classes in Canterbury, an area populated with enthusiastic spinners and weavers. Alison’s husband Robert came from a back ground of high country sheep farming and provided help in identifying the best quality wools and advising how to use them. When they moved to Auckland, Alison continued her involvement in spinning and weaving. Later, when serious illness struck, felting became a therapeutic activity which aided Alison’s recovery. Felting was to become her enduring passion. An ancient art, felting was practised in times of great antiquity both in Asia and Europe. Nomadic people made their yurts or tents and mats and blankets by felting

wool which provided warm and dry shelters and durable warm clothing. Some historical specimens of felting are said to date from 3500 years ago. There are many aspects to felting. Alison has chosen to pursue nuno felting which uses wool incorporating a variety of fabrics. Because her creative skills lie strongly in colour and texture, Alison uses mainly silk, in combination with wool. This brings a vibrancy of colour and warmth to her garments, purses, hats, brooches, scarves and jackets. “You start with carded wool which you have to lay out evenly on the working area,” says Alison. “Then you place the materials required for embellishments, on top. In many ways it is more of an
art form as every piece is unique. For me the colour and texture are important and must be relevant to what I am making. For example, I have recently begun to felt some baby cot covers and have moved to more natural or pastel colours whilst retaining the softness and warmth. By contrast, my garments are made from thicker and more vibrant colours which give the wearers a big lift, especially in winter.” Regular clients and visitors, with an eye for quality, can visit the Classy Craft markets on the first and third Saturday of each month to view and buy Alison’s beautiful, locally-made products and to chat with her to find out more about felting.
New investment in transport Absolutely delighted that the Government has announced that it will electrify the rail line from Papakura to Pukekohe, says Hunua MP Andrew Bayly in a post on his Facebook page. The government will also support the acquisition of 17 new battery-powered electric train units by council, and, as part of last month’s $600 million infrastructure investment, assist with the funding of two new rail stations to be built at Drury and Paerata. With South Auckland providing a significant part of Auckland’s growth —21,000 more new houses planned in Drury, Pukekohe and Paerata, commuters are set to save
around 11 minutes in travel time as a result of National’s plan for electrification between Pukekohe and Papakura says Mr Bayly. National will invest $130m in electrification of rail between Pukekohe and Papakura and $100 million on a third rail line from Wiri to Westfield. Around $100m for a third rail line from Wiri to Westfield will accommodate more trains, improving frequency and reducing congestion. At the moment, passenger and freight trains are competing for space in this section and this investment will separate the two, freeing up space for both of these essential services.

he Asian Council on Reducing Crime is one of eight local organisations to receive funding from the Howick Local Board to implement community safety projects. The group’s spokesperson Rosa Chow says that they will use the money to develop the home safety checklist, to run community workshops on family violence and safety awareness – including presentations from Victim Support and Police. They also plan to work with local Chinese people from churches and language schools, including parents, migrant groups, and the Lin An Dui foot patrol teams that talk with shoppers. Community worker Mrs Chow says the grant is essential to their work. “We are a small charitable group without funding, so we couldn’t provide a wider service without the support of the local board.” She says the checklist is a simple yet very practical way to reduce the risk of crime because it involves self-help. “For example, we know people have alarms but don’t always turn them on when they go out, so using examples from our checklist and follow-up from our group, we can encourage people

to become more aware and take ownership.” Howick Local Board’s community safety programme lead Bob Wichman says the funding for community safety initiatives fits well with the priority outlined in its local board plan, to ensure that people feel safe in and connected to their community. “We know community safety is one of the biggest concerns for people, so as a board we want to support community initiatives that support that. “Even if you live in the most expensive house, in the nicest street or suburb, things can happen so safety is paramount – without it you have nothing.”
The local board also provided funding to the following organisations: Asian Council on Reducing Crime for home safety ($3000) and family violence awareness ($3000). New Neighbourhood Support groups in Pakuranga/Bucklands Beach ($4000) and Howick/ Botany/Flatbush ($2000). Asian Safety Education and Promotion Charitable Trust for Asian youth driver and road safety workshops with presentations from Police, Auckland Transport and community leaders ($1800). Community patrols for local patrols and safety messaging, with a focus on preventing car crime for Howick/Pakuranga ($2000) and Botany/Flatbush ($2000). The Sowers Trust for a pilot programme in school holidays providing peer support for parents who are struggling with a concurrent programme for children ($5100). The Greater East Tamaki Business Association for safety flipcharts for Howick businesses in English and Chinese The Royal New Zealand Coastguard Boating Education for providing a water safety programme to Lloyd Elsmore swimming pool for their users.

Your view Rubbish also an issue
Thank you for publishing an article about the cars for sale on Cascade Road (Times, August 3). I am surprised the council doesn’t put an island of some sort along that stretch of the road so the shoulder is closed off. Another issue is the number of rubbish bags dumped on the grass beside the cars for sale. How inconsiderate and selfish! The persons concerned may have got rid of their problem but it shows no respect to the rest of the community who drive past it. Jo McGrath
Plaza needs to wake up
I see that more shops are now empty at Pakuranga Plaza. Being so close to Sylvia Park and with Botany about to embark on an extension, I think the Pakuranga Plaza management needs to wake up to trying to make the centre more appealing, given its limitations. One of its biggest drawbacks is traffic wardens. The parking time is too restrictive to encourage people to do other than dive in there for whatever minor shopping they need and hastily depart. Why not extend the parking to 4 hours to give plenty of time to browse, have a coffee and perhaps some lunch? Clearly the restricted parking time is to discourage people from parking there and taking a bus and train to the City, but 4 hours would not allow people to park there for the day without incurring a fine. Wake up Pakuranga Plaza before it’s too late and the centre gets sold

Ban these car sales
Finally, something is about to be done about the private cars parked for sale along the side of Cascades Road (Times, August 3). Last year I contacted the council with this concern and was referred to the parking wardens. I was given a job number, and after several weeks was informed that this parking was legal as the cars were inside the white line on the side of the road. Nothing could be done about it. At that time, there were about 10 cars parked every day Now, a year later, there can be as many as 24 cars parked overnight or at any one time. Cascades Road is busy and should not be used as a car yard. The car owners are taking advantage of free advertising for their vehicles. It has been mentioned that several car dealers are parking their cars there as well. I disagree with Vicky Chan. Why should we have a car yard at Lloyd Elsmore Park? This park is used for all of our sports and pleasure. Auckland Transport should have another look at this serious issue as the selling of vehicles on a busy road like this should be banned. Restrictions on land supply has added half a million dollars to the average Auckland house We are disappointed but not surprised by the findings the Social Policy Evaluation and Research Unit (Superu) that land use regulation

The report, “Quantifying the impact of land use regulations: Evidence from New Zealand”, was released by the Minister of Finance, Steven Joyce recently. It’s sobering to think that Aucklanders pay over half a million dollars on the average Auckland house because of red tape imposed by the Council. The findings of the research states that land use regulation is impeding of flexibility of housing supply to be able to respond to population growth. Auckland housing costs is the primary driver of poverty and many of the socials ills that sadly plague our region. Homelessness, overcrowded houses, third word diseases and poor educational outcomes all stem directly from the high cost of housing largely as a result of our onerous land use regulations. More housing Jami-Lee’s infrastructure JOTTINGS investment for NZ It is important that our housing stock is meeting growth and keeping up with demand. This is why the Government is investing in housing boosts all over the country. Recently the Government has made two major announcements on housing infrastructure: a $1 billion Housing Infrastructure Fund, and up to $600 million in co-invested funding for housing infrastructure. The $1b Housing Infrastructure Fund is another milestone for the Government which will speed up the delivery of 60,000 houses across our fastest growing population centres over the next 10 years. The funding will be allocated across nine projects in five different council areas, Auckland, Hamilton, Waikato, Tauranga and Queenstown. The first earthworks will be under way this coming summer, the first homes consented early in 2018 and first homes completed by late 2018. The infrastructure to be funded includes new bridges, a State Highway interchange, arterial roads, water and waste treatments plants, pump stations and storm water drainage. Councils will also work through the details of how many lower-cost houses
developers will be able to produce via the infrastructure being put in place. On top of the Housing Infrastructure Fund, the Government will be investing up to $600m alongside local councils and private sector investors in network infrastructure for big new housing developments. Investment will be done through a new company called Crown Infrastructure Partners. This new infrastructure funding model is a way to bring in private sector investors and to help councils fund new long-term infrastructure. We would expect the Crown’s investment in each project to be matched with at least one to one with private sector investment over time. The first projects to be funded by the company will be Auckland projects, many of them in the south. More construction in Auckland benefits the entire city when the supply of housing lifts. These projects will make their contribution to lifting housing supply alongside the Government’s own Crown Building Project, the Special Housing Areas, our planning changes, and come at a time when record levels of new home construction is taking place across New Zealand.

ne of our own is changing the way Aucklander’s think about sustainability. Pakuranga resident, Taryn Shirkey, is the founder of the new Auckland pop-up cafe, Wander Eco-Cafe, which opened its doors to the public in March. Based out of a renovated trailer in Wynyard Quarter, Wander Ecocafe prides itself on using fully compostable packaging, mostly organic ingredients and offering fresh baked wholesome foods that come directly from owner to customer. “Our goal is to spark a little bit of consciousness around the way people consume everything, from food to packaging,” says the 22-year-old business owner. “There are so many people who are ignorant about sustainability and the benefits of using organic products. It’s about using things that are safe for the environment, that reduce waste and are good for us,” she says. Shirkey hopes to encourage people to consume sustainably by making it easier for them to create less waste. “We run a promotion where if you buy eight coffees you get your ninth free. However, if you bring your own cup, it counts as two coffees and you get two stamps. It’s a little incentive for people to use their own cups. “We also sell our own ‘Keep Cups’ that are reusable and people are quick to say, “I don’t want to spend money on that cup. And I always say, ‘its okay, you don’t have to buy our cup, bring your mug from work’. For me this isn’t a marketing

thing for my cups, it’s about the environment,” she says. Although Shirkey and her team are doing their part by providing packaging that comes from the plants, she says the biggest challenge is people don’t realise that buying compostable packaging is only the first step. “We try really hard to let people know that if they throw their compostable cups in the rubbish, it doesn’t actually get composted, but there are a lot of people who are so stuck in their ways that they don’t listen,” she says. “If it doesn’t end up back with the plants, you almost haven’t achieved anything. The only thing that you’ve helped is that if it ever made it to the ocean, it wouldn’t harm the ocean.” The entrepreneur is determined not to give up. As well as having a compost bin available beside Wander and
encouraging people to only throw the packaging away in compostable bins, she is working alongside business surrounding Wynyard Quarter to provide compost bins in their offices. She says if you had asked her two years ago if she would have her own cafe today, she would have laughed. Shirkey came up with the idea for an eco-cafe with her friend Sophie Elliot while they were both studying marine biology at Auckland University and says people are constantly surprised at her career change. “I hate how we are all forced to just have one dream. I have a million dreams, and I love a million things and I want to do all of them in my lifetime,” she says. Shirkey says that she can’t wait to come back to her marine biology career one day, but for now she believes Wander EcoCafe is her mission.

Marionettes capture kids’ imagination at Children’s Village When Howickian, Wally Rice, learnt that an intake of young children were to have respite care during the school holidays at Stand Children’s Services, Children’s Village, he immediately thought of John Rew, puppet man extraordinaire. John, who grew up in the Bucklands Beach area, has been playing with puppets since he was eight years old. He subsequently developed a passion for creating and making his own marionettes (string puppets) and has been entertaining children with his ever-growing assortment of puppet characters for more than 50 years. John works with an open stage so that the audience can clearly see him working the marionettes whilst using voiceovers to match the characters he has created. The children quickly focus on the puppets only and interact directly with them. Pene Frost, regional manager of Stand Children’s Services, formerly known as the Pakuranga Children’s Health Camp, and the staff were delighted with the response of the children who not only watched and interacted with the puppet show but

umping the school decile system will remove the stigma attached to the rankings and help remove misconceptions and bias, the president of Secondary Principals Association of New Zealand has said. Michael Williams, who is also principal at Pakuranga College, said the decile modelling is a crude mechanism for schools that have students who need a bit of extra resourcing because of disadvantage. It was time for a change. “I think it’s good news. It’s long overdue.” Education Minister Nikki Kaye recently confirmed the Government will replace the decile system for schools with targeted funding to better support those students most at risk of not achieving. “For too long schools have been stigmatised and wrongly judged by their decile number,” Ms Kaye said in a media statement. “Children and young people deserve to take pride in their school and we need to better target funding to where the need is greatest to support all children to achieve. She announced that the Cabinet had agreed to replace the decile system with a Risk Index that allows the government to better target funding to schools with children and young people most at risk of not achieving due to disadvantage. “We will also be replacing the equity index used to allocate disadvantage funding in early childhood education with the Risk Index.” Decile funding currently accounts for less than three per cent of a school’s resources. “Rather than allocating this funding on the basis of neighbourhood characteristics as the current decile system

does, the Risk Index will instead provide fairer funding that better reflects the needs of children in our schools and services,” she said. “This will mean extra resources are better targeted to support schools to lift achievement.” The specific factors to be used in the index are subject to further analysis before being finalised. But, they will be the indicators which evidence tells us have the greatest influence on student achievement. “However, I’m pleased to be able to confirm that no school, early learning service or nga kohanga reo will see a reduction in their funding as a direct result of this change,” says Ms Kaye. “In fact, we expect some will gain significantly.” Mr Williams recounted changing from being a principal of a low decile school to a high decile school. “I had ignorant people who said ‘oh you’re going to a good school’. No I was going to a richer school, not a better one’,” he said. “There’s huge confusion in the community mainly because of the media, who use the tag quite quickly to label schools. So if we can remove that, it will be a success. “No doubt the media and real estate agents will frantically try to find out how they can categorise schools still, because there will be extra funding
going into schools, but it will be anonymous data and nobody will know who the students are. “So no doubt media and others will do investigations to find out who’s getting money, but it won’t be so tidy because it will be a continual system, not a nice, tidy decile one, decile two system.” Macleans College Principal Byron Bentley said the change “looks to be very sensible and workable.” He said there is no doubt the decile system is a genuine attempt to assist schools with funding. “Having taught in several lower decile schools the extra money was always welcome and never in my experience begrudged by higher decile schools who received proportionally less through this system. It is a great pity that so much reliance on school quality is aligned with the decile rating. Therefore, if you are a lower decile school you must be a poor performer relative to the high decile. In a large number of cases this is untrue and unjust and there are a number of higher decile schools who do under-perform. The decile rating was for funding purposes only. The new system makes it even more targeted for students in need, removes the stigma of lower decile school branding and is a very good move.”

Waiheke home and a Grey Lynn renovation have taken out this year’s Supreme Awards in the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2017 House of the Year competition. Pitch Construction Limited won four regional awards with a Waiheke home, including the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2017 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the New Home over $2 million Award. The company was also awarded the Outdoor Living Award for the same property. Broswick Builders Limited was awarded the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2017 Supreme Renovation of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the Renovation Award over $1 million. They were also awarded the Craftmanship Award and the Sustainable Home Award. Judges called the winning House of the Year a work of art. “With outstanding craftsmanship and exceptional finishing, this cliff top home – built on a very difficult and narrow site – is a place to relax and enjoy,” they said. “The seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living morph together, presented with a variety of materials and colour. This provides a superb backdrop to the finishing touches by a very discerning owner. “The home is determined by the central outdoor living, covered courtyard. This contains an open fire, outdoor dining and lounge areas, BBQ, and swimming pool,
that separates the guest pavilion from the main living pavilion. The views from these areas is to die for. “With attention to detail in every area of the home, it was quite simply faultless, and a deserving winner.” Judges said the winning renovation was a traditional Grey Lynn cottage located close to the street, and gives little away to what’s happening behind. “Both old and knew blend in an interesting way making the home full of surprises,” they said. “Exquisite detailing both inside and out, a mix of quality materials, along with exposing some of the structure internally, clearly shows everything has been thought through and executed perfectly. “A new master suite, a large kitchen, living, and dining area make this a very comfortable home. A joy to inspect.” The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on August 5 at SkyCity. The winning builds were celebrated by members of the Auckland Registered Master Builders Association and members of the local construction industry. There were 32 Gold Award winners from the Auckland region, which will now be judged against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists. National category winners and the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner on November 25 at SkyCity in Auckland.

he much-anticipated Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival brings primary and intermediate schools across the local communities to showcase their dance moves and fancy footwork. There was a lot of excitement as this year 13 schools were organised by Our Lady Star of the Sea on Monday and Tuesday, August 7 and 8.
Another 17 schools were hosted by Cockle Bay School on Wednesday and Thursday, August 9 and 10. The events were held at Elim Christian College auditorium. F
rom the hill overlooking the rugby league fields at Paparoa Park, The Firm are making their presence heard. The Firm - a tongue in cheek reference to gangs of English football hooligans - began over a Sunday barbecue as a loose supporters group for the Howick Hornets Rugby League Club. It has since become a driving force off the park. Members help out with fundraising for the junior teams at the club, and have enjoyed watching the most successful Hornets season across the grades since 2011. They have some of the best seats in the house at Paparoa Park, parking up plastic chairs high on the hill around the half way mark. Member Dave Evans says despite the sometimes salty language that comes out of their section, the atmosphere they create is positive. “You’ve got to have a crowd, and you want it to be an interesting crowd, but it’s still a family crowd as well.” Howick has traditionally been a stronghold of rugby union, and the Hornets have at times

When the Pakuranga Athletic Club, commences its new season on October 18th it will be 50 years, since its first athletic meeting was held. In 1967 a group of parents, with children attending Riverina School, felt the need for an athletic club in the rapidly expanding suburb. Help was sort from the Howick Jaycees who organised a letterbox drop, calling for a public meeting to be held. At this meeting attended by 40 members of the public, the Pakuranga Athletic Club was formed and a committee elected. The first meetings were held at Ti Rakau Park and over the next 13 years the club went from strength to strength. During the 1970s officials were catering for 600 children on club nights. In 1980 the club moved up the highway to the newly formed athletic oval on the developing Lloyd Elsmore Park. A Harrier Section was formed in 1977 and a Joggers Section 1982. Clubrooms were opened in 1984, after extensive fundraising and help from council, under the shared responsibil-

Every boat should have at least two crew with basic boating knowledge and the ability to call for assistance if required. Coastguard’s Day Skipper and Maritime VHF Radio Operator courses are ideal for equipping you with the skills to enjoy your boating safely. In addition, a significant number of calls from boats could be avoided if the skipper had a little more mechanical knowledge. The Coastguard Engine Operator courses focus on correct operation, user maintenance and basic trouble shooting of common inboard or outboard engines. The knowledge gained helps skippers look after their investment, and have some steps to follow if they experience engine issues. By getting your boat and your skills sorted now, you can enjoy stress-free boating as we come into summer.

nce again during the last year the Howick Tennis Club midweek ladies have excelled and held another fundraising tournament with the $4750 proceeds being donated to Totara Hospice. Together with neighbouring clubs over the past 22 years, more than $80,000 has been raised for the Hospice. While not a lot of tennis was played on the day of the tournament due to the bad weather conditions, those present opened their wallets and contributed generously to this very worthwhile charity. ‘Razor’ enjoys W
ith a nick-name ‘Razor’ it is little wonder that breakdancing Crusaders coach Scott Robertson has a happy knack of surviving close shaves. And so it was in Sunday’s emotionally-charged Super Rugby Ellis Park final against the Lions before 62,000 frenzied Johannesburg fans who believed their team could add the Crusaders’scalp to that of the Hurricanes. That they came so close after Kwagga Smith was red-carded in the 38th minute for tackling David Havili in the air said much for their quality. But it also spoke volumes for the character of the Crusaders who won their eighth Super crown and first since 2008. They are also the only team to have won a final on foreign soil and have done it twice. It was magnificent defence that ensured success in a hardfought 25-17 victory. And in Sam Whitelock, Kieran Read, Matt Todd, Ryan Crotty and Israel Dagg, they have a group of quality leaders who know how to handle a crisis in the heat of battle. Renowned for his lineout work, Whitelock’s tackle count rivalled that of Todd and All Blacks skipper Read and his captaincy has been outstanding since taking over the

A likeable 25-year-old Timaru builder who had previously won a world indoor crown and claimed a third placed bronze medal at the 2015 Rio Olympics, Walsh was amazingly consistent. It was sad to see popular superstar Jamaican sprinter Usain Boult bow out of athletics with a third placed bronze in the 100m and wonderful to see 5000 and 10,000m Olympic gold medallist friend Mo Farrah finish a champion on track before he sets his sights on the marathon.
