Missing man confirmed dead by police Police confirmed on May 12 that a male found dead on a property in Whitford was missing man John Prangley. Mr Prangley, 55, left his Whitford address on Thursday,
April 13. Police said on April 28 that he did not take any personal belongings with him and had not made contact with family or friends which was out of character for him.
On May 10, police said they were at the scene of a sudden death at an address in Whitford. They did not believe the death was suspicious. The matter will be referred to the coroner.
Mr Prangley’s family has asked that they be allowed to grieve their loss in private and do not wish to be contacted by media, a police spokesperson said.

A
sked her age, 100-year-old Sybil Fortune says “21 and a hell of a lot of months”. With grace and humour, Mrs Fortune relished the celebrations in Howick last week with family and friends. At 100, she says she doesn’t feel any different. “I’m just accepting of it and I have had a very good life.” She was a music teacher. But, with World War II underway, she was seconded to the Ministry of Supply in Wellington where she met her husband Bart Fortune. A descendent of the Fortune family who came to Howick to farm in the 1850s, he was sales and promotions manager at the Wellington outpost of RCA (the Radio Corporation of America). He took a key role in the formation of TANZA Records with the mission “to assist New Zealand artists” and producing its first record
Blue Smoke in 1949. Sharing their love of music, the couple held concert parties for troops, particularly the many American servicemen stationed in New Zealand between 1942 and 1944. They were married in Wellington in 1948. Steeped in the American big band era (Mr Fortune was road manager for American singer Nat King Cole’s New Zealand tour in the early 1950s) the couple filled their home with music. They loved Frank Sinatra and Artie Shaw. Their son Gavin says his Dad “was locked into the classics”. “They were all marooned on the Frank Sinatra era. But when the big band era finished he couldn’t cope with rock ’n’ roll. Mrs Fortune, however, relished its arrival and on her birthday confirmed to the Times “I love the Beatles”. “Their lives revolved around music,” Gavin says. “On weekends I

heard Swan Lake before any of the other kids.” When Mr Fortune finished work at RCA, the couple did a stint on a sheep farm at Dargaville, a time Mrs Fortune recalls as she commands her son to “get in behind” for the Times photograph. They moved to Auckland in 1956 building a house in Waipuna Road, the site of the Capri Clinic today. In 1971 Mr Fortune retired as sales manager of Alex Harvey Metal Containers. The couple sold their Waipuna Road house and moved to Piha where Mrs Fortune remained until 15 years ago. Mr Fortune died in 1998. Mrs Fortune’s family say she loved Piha, swimming every day and she loved tennis. She also established a special rapport with the local children, always asking open-ended questions. Some of those children, now grown-up, were among the guests who celebrated the centenarian’s

The charity believes that everyone deserves a decent place to live. “We know that in areas of high home ownership there is less crime, better health outcomes for families and more stability in education and careers because families have security of tenure,” says Habitat executive director Conrad LaPointe. “Unfortunately rising house prices in Auckland, especially over the past few years, have made the Kiwi dream of home
ownership for many no longer a possibility. With more and more people unable to afford a home of their own, our work recently has focused on rental properties, and we are working in conjunction with several community organisations and local government to improve Auckland’s housing stocks to make sure homes are warm and dry. “Sadly we are seeing more and more people every day in housing need. We are extremely grateful that Z Energy recognises our charity and encourage the local community to get behind this initiative.”

Powerhooping for breast cancer ■ BY KELLY TEED Nine hours of almost non-stop hula hooping with just one bathroom break is quite a feat – one that Amy McAuley has done before and intends to do again. Two years ago, the local Powerhoop group did a Hoopa-thon in Pakuranga Plaza to fundraise for charity where the Powerhoop NZ owner accomplished the feat. This year, she’s hoping to beat her own record. The group will be putting on a show at the Howick bandstand on the corner
of Uxbridge Rd and Picton St on Saturday May 27th beginning at 9am and going until late hoping to raise as much money as possible. It’s just one of many fundraising tactics to help them reach their goal of $10,000 for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. Ms McAuley is passionate about raising money for charity. She introduced Powerhoop into New Zealand four years ago, after training as a Powerhoop instructor in Scotland and what started off as one class a week in the Howick Salvation Army church, has grown into nine Powerhoop communities
around New Zealand. Each year, they collaborate together to fundraise for a variety of different charities. For the Pink Ribbon Breakfasts will be held up and down the country by Powerhoop members while local businesses have also jumped on board to sponsor prizes for silent and online auctions. The Heart Foundation is also getting some love, with Ms McAuley’s group walking (while hooping of course) around the Ellerslie Racecourse. While they’re serious about raising money for well-deserving

charities, they certainly know how to have a bit of fun while doing it. Also in the works is a cheeky nude calendar to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation – a cause close to Ms McAuley’s heart. “For years I suffered from [negative mental health]. I had Post Natal Depression, I had an eating disorder, I know how bad life can be without exercise in life

and I know how much it saved my life and helped my mental health and wellbeing,” she said. “We’re really all about using the power of the group. We’ve got an incredible community in Powerhoop with women of all ages, shapes and sizes, and some men as well, and we love coming together to raise money for charity.”

Couple fighting the good fight Tearfund NZ correspondent Helen Manson speaks to the Times about the conflict in East Africa ■■By Laura Brookes
S
he’s a former Macleans College student working on the frontlines of one of the world’s greatest humanitarian crises – and Helen Manson is calling on Kiwis to help make a difference. The 32-year-old lives in Kampala, Uganda with husband Tim and their two young children, doing humanitarian photography and storytelling for Tearfund New Zealand and various other NGOs. She often travels to the borders of South Sudan – a nation where civil war broke out in December 2013 ignited by a political struggle between president Salva Kiir and former vice-president Riek Machar. In July 2016 the conflict stepped up a notch, and with the additional outbreak of famine, the situation in South Sudan is now considered one of the world’s greatest humanitarian crises. It is estimated 901,000 South Sudanese refugees have crossed into Uganda due to the ongoing conflict that has forced more than two million people to flee their homes. “We’re seeing people literally running with anything they can carry, crossing that border and escaping what they’ve seen,” said Mrs Manson. “They’ve seen dead bodies along the way. They’ve gone for days without food, they’re completely exhausted, they’re traumatised from

operations in Uganda and Iraq was a very intentional move, said Mrs Manson. “It’s really strategic [for us] to be in Uganda, surrounded by countries that are in such war. “Then in Iraq it’s very strategic too because you’ve got ISIS on your doorstep. [Tutapona] are working right in the heart of this area where people are coming out of Mosul. They’re working with people 24 to 48 hours out of being released from
having their house burnt down... they’re incredibly traumatised.” The former Pakuranga couple settled permanently in Uganda three years ago, where Mr Manson works as country director for Tearfund’s partner Tutapona – a not-for-profit organisation providing trauma counselling for victims of war and refugees. With a desire to be positioned alongside the most traumatised people in the world, setting up
being sex slaves with ISIS. “These people are fresh out of captivity [and] they’re at the worst end of the spectrum that you could expect because their trauma is so fresh... they have post-traumatic stress disorder to an extent we have never seen. Most of them have suicidal tendencies.” The mother-of-two recently returned from Iraq where she was based in Sinjar – a town located three kilometres out of Mosul on the Syrian border where ISIS invaded in August 2014, killing more than 6000 people in one day and taking thousands more captive. Three years on, heartbreaking scenes of destruction still permeate the defeated town, said Mrs Manson. “It’s really bleak. They hope to return to their homes, but I’ve got pictures from Sinjar. I wouldn’t even know where to begin – that town is just annihilated. “There’s also a lot of fear. People are worried they’re going to get caught because ISIS say ‘we will come and find you, and if you escape, we will kill everybody that you know’.” Harrowing tales of abuse at the hands of ISIS, teenagers forced to wear suicide belts and children gifted grenades as birthday presents are only a fraction of the unimaginable horrors Mrs Manson hears about in her communications work for local and international non-profits. She told the Times the couple
speak often to counsellors and keep in regular contact with their families back home to deal with the confronting reality of their work. “Hearing the worst of humanity’s stories and going to sleep at night can sometimes be a challenge because of the vicarious trauma, but I do feel like after doing this for a few years now we’ve got a good support system around us.” Despite the dismal circumstances, Mrs Manson said some of the people on the frontlines of the crisis still hold out hope for a future defined by peace and not war. The avid writer, who often pens her experiences on the couple’s blog timandhelenmanson.blogspot. co.nz, has witnessed first-hand the positive difference Tearfund is making on a global scale and said she has faith in the difference everyday Kiwis can make by supporting its work. “What I want to do for these people is to help them and do whatever I can with my humble skill to bring them some light today. “Whether that’s a water trucking or whether that’s food or whether that’s trauma counselling in the long-term, I feel like by writing about it and sharing it with Kiwis, we do help in some way. “We really love it, and we really believe that this works.” ➤➤You can help today by donating to Tearfund’s appeals for South Sudan and Iraq. Hyundai set for new dealership Two new high-end car brands will soon call Botany home as the finishing touches are put on a large new dealership on Ti Rakau Drive. Armstrong Motors managing director Rick Armstrong has confirmed that Hyundai will sit along Mercedes-Benz in the new complex. The 11,000m2 site boasts nearly 5500m2 of floor space and Mr Armstrong says it was always built for two brands. “We now have two exceptional
franchises for the site that complement each other really well, and it will create a new automotive centre that east Auckland has lacked up until now,” said Mr Armstrong. Mercedes-Benz is expected to be open in early June with Hyundai following shortly after. “The new dealership has been in the making for two years as land was found, designs were finalised and the build program completed,” said Mr Armstrong. The new dealership will trade
as East Auckland Hyundai. “We are incredibly happy with the outcome. I
t was 1946 in Suva, Fiji, and Shiv Prasad had his eye on Yashwant Chaudhary. At least, that’s how she likes to start the story. Last week, the loved-up couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at Bruce McLaren Retirement Village – a milestone Yashwant never imagined they would reach together. “We’ve been really lucky so far [in health and life]. I never thought we would make it to this.” They were only 21 when they married in an elaborate, traditional Hindu wedding hosted at Yashwant’s parents’ residence in Nausori and both pursued careers in the education sector. Yashwant graduated as a primary school teacher from Fiji Teachers College in 1946 and devoted herself to this profession for 36 years. In her teaching career, she was a pioneer at promoting special needs education and was proactive in promoting equal opportunities for women. Shiv attended Auckland Teachers College in the mid 1940s and went on to serve in the Fiji Ministry of Education for 41 years, taking up various roles including head teacher, senior lecturer, education officer and chief education officer. Seventy years down the track, the couple have two sons and a daughter, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren – and they’ve learnt a thing or two about what makes for a good marriage. “Give and take... and

The important thing is happiness,” said Yashwant. “You’ve got to listen to each other, too.” Since immigrating to New Zealand in 1987, the couple have resided in Pakuranga, but sold their beloved home in June 2015 due to Shiv’s ill health and moved into Bruce McLaren Retirement Village, where they are an inspiration to the staff and community. More than 30 people attended a celebratory afternoon tea at the village held in honour of them on May 10, including residents, staff and family. “You can see there’s a ‘forever’ [with them]. It’s not just something in the books,” said Lonita, a staff member at Bruce McLaren. “It’s very special to have a
couple like them here,” said another. Daughter Yashwini Krishan said it’s been lovely to watch her parents fully embrace their new environment at Bruce McLaren, and credited the “incredible” staff team for the care they have provided since then, particularly village manager Warren Herring and clinical manager Nicky Rijns. She told the Times her parents’ example of marriage and commitment has taught her well. “Mum and dad’s long journey has taught us to be honest in a relationship, be tolerant and to be appreciative of each other’s qualities. They have had a wonderful marriage as they have always been the best of friends, have shared interests and thoroughly enjoy each other’s company.”

PINK RIBBON BREAKFAST
Host a brekkie for breast cancer research in humble kitchens and posh hotels, with just a few friends or more than 100 guests coming together. Breast Cancer Foundation hopes to top last year’s total of over 3200 breakfasts across New Zealand, which were attended by 90,000 people and raised $1.7 million.
Celebrity cook and author Nadia Lim, who has fronted this year’s campaign, said she is delighted by the response so far but urges even more people to get involved. “Having recently met some incredibly inspiring women who’ve survived breast cancer, I’m even more motivated to help raise funds that will save lives,” Nadia said. “I encourage everyone to get involved, hopefully inspired by some of the recipes I’ve developed especially for Pink Ribbon Breakfast!” She has released a scrumptious recipe for Pear Tart (attached) as a taster of the six exclusive recipes that hosts will receive when they sign up at www.pinkribbonbreakfast. co.nz
Proceeds from this year’s Pink Ribbon Breakfasts will go towards breast cancer research, with a focus on support for clinical trials, immunotherapies, preventing the spread of cancer, improved clinical practice for better patient outcomes, and treatments for advanced breast cancer. They will also help provide breast awareness education as well as support for patients. Evangelia Henderson, chief executive at Breast Cancer Foundation NZ (BCFNZ), said funds raised will help BCFNZ push for new frontiers in early detection, treatment and support. Nik is CEO for the New Zealand’s Child Labor Free (CLF) – an organisation with the vision of creating a world free of child labour. The CLF Team has also been involved in establishing an early childhood centre in Kolkata for children whose mothers have opted for freedom from the sex industry. This project is in partnership with a group called Freeset, who make the Source Café uniforms as their new source of employment. Inspired by unique innovations and sustainable efforts the three partners saw on an overseas trip with CLF, they decided to launch the café together. Everything from the food through to the furniture at Source is, ethical, upcycled, recycled, Fairtrade or organic. “We try to be as sustainable as possible,” Nik says. Source’s menu (printed on recycled paper) includes a rundown on the origin of their key products

– such as honey from Longhill Farms in Waiomio, bacon from Freedom Farms in the South Island and artisan breads from Sean Armstrong’s Loaf. On this menu are some
exciting breakfast options such as The Elvis Waffle (crisp waffle, caramelised banana, peanut butter, bacon, maple syrup and vanilla mascarpone) or Source Granola (house baked granola with ginger,
turmeric, cinnamon, nuts and fruit served with Raglan coconut yoghurt and stewed fruit). The lunch and dinner menus are also innovative, while the all-day Kids Menu has some real winners.
The cabinet food is prepared on site and has some fascinating takes on old favourites. The wine list features a selection from Byrnes Wines of Kerikeri, while the beers are sourced from McLeods Brewery in Waipu and spectacular hard shakes include a delicious chocolate milkshake spiked with whisky and a vodka blended banana milkshake. In a lovely setting with a good parking area, Nik describes the décor as “raw, exposed, inviting, warm and honest.” And with upcycled chairs from an old hall, mismatched knives and forks, and lots of lush green plants, this sums it up. And there are stories everywhere. On the cutlery containers, a story details how many of the tables as well as the walls and counters of the café have been made from macrocarpa – the most eco-friendly timber produced in New Zealand. There’s also information about L’affare of Wellington who supply Gusto Blend Fairtrade coffee and Matakana’s Morris & James who made the special light fittings from hand-dug clay. Your view Cheap as chips
The article published in the Times on May 11, “Colin: That’s not on”, has raised my hackles (again) over Auckland Transport’s insistence on resurfacing suburban streets in chip seal. The responses from Auckland Transport’s spokesman, Mark Hannan, did nothing to placate me. By Mr Hannan’s own admission, the asphalt concrete (hot-mix) surface on Kilkenny Drive was completed in 1997. It lasted 20 years! How long is the new chip-seal forecast to last before it requires maintenance? Mr Hannan also stated that the resurfacing in chip-seal is done in the interests of maintaining “good skid resistance”. Perhaps he would care to explain, therefore, why street junctions, road bridges, (often susceptible to ice), and roads with higher volumes of traffic, are surfaced with hot-mix. Is skid resistance unimportant here? Mr Hannan further claims that the resurfacing of Kilkenny Drive was carried out “in accordance with Auckland Transport road resurfacing guidelines”. Perhaps the guidelines need revisiting. Citizens of some countries are executed in accordance with the guidelines of their governments, but that doesn’t make it right! Chip-seal is noisy, messy, ugly, damaging, and short-lived. There is only one advantage of chip-seal over hot-mix, and that

Gold Card holders beware Re travel from Half Moon Bay Marina. Were you aware travel on the Gold Card starts when you swipe your card? I found out the hard way. I was catching the 9.15am ferry to the city. The terminal is new and so I gave myself plenty of time. I swiped my card and made my way slowly down the long walkway. I anticipated I needed 10-15 minutes before the 9.15am departure for boarding. Coming back just after 3pm for the 3.30pm ferry, my card was declined due to insufficient funds. Come on! This is my Gold Card - I don’t need money to travel. Checking at the office, I was told I swiped my card at 1 minute before the 8.50am deadline that day, so travel starts from when you swipe, not when you travel (since when)? I was told I had to go to Britomart to sort this out, but I would miss the ferry home. I am not well and needed to just get home, so I paid the extra $7 over and above what was taken from my card already that morning. I could have been stranded had I not taken some cash. Is this just another way for AT and ‘friends’ to devalue the Gold Card and catch us oldies out? I

complained and was told that as I swiped on one minute early, my complaint was declined. How many other Gold Card holders are going to be caught out here? From memory, the swipe machine is not at the entrance of the terminal at, say, Devonport, but closer to the boarding ramp. Why so far away here? everal local musicians have taken another step forward in the Smokefree Rockquest challenge, New Zealand’s only nationwide, live, original music, youth event. It was a big weekend for young Kiwi musicians with around 100 bands competing at the North Shore, Auckland Central and Manukau Smokefree Rockquest heats on Friday and Saturday. The bands Dm7 and Identity Crisis from Ormiston Senior College, Minimal silence from Howick College and Haze from Saint Kentigern College were among the 12 Manukau-based bands to go through. And the bands Skwid and Silvera, registered in the Auckland Central region, were in the top 12 and featured musicians from Saint Kentigern College and Pakuranga College respectively. Smokefree Rockquest founder and director Glenn Common said the level of performances at the heats was heartening and showed entrants were getting more support for contemporary music from their schools and making use of online resources. “Between now and the regional final, their preparation work is part of the process that makes Smokefree Rockquest and Pacifica Beats such valuable learning experiences for young people,” he said. “The top bands from each of the heats going on to their final need to practise hard, craft their set, get their supporters rallied

There were 5845 unconditional residential sales in April, representing a 32 per cent decline on March and a 31 per cent decline on April 2016. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the number of sales fell 9 per cent from March to April.

The national median house price rose $51,000 (+10.4 per cent) year-on-year. Compared to March, the national median house price eased $2500 (-0.5 per cent). Gisborne and Nelson/ Marlborough recorded the largest percentage increase in median price compared to April 2016, at 23 per cent, followed by Waikato at 22.3 per cent and Wellington at 18.8 per cent.

The number of properties available for sale continues to decline nationwide, with 1028 fewer houses for sale in April compared to 12 months ago, although the number of properties for sale in the Auckland region has increased by 2468 (+39 per cent). Compared to April 2016, the number of listings fell 3.2 per cent in Canterbury, 13.2 per cent in Wellington and 12 per cent in Waikato. Excluding Auckland, the number of properties for sale has fallen by 3496 (-16.7 per cent) over the past 12 months.

“News that the Government will build 34,500 new homes in Auckland over the next decade is to be applauded, but a step change in infrastructure funding and investment will be required to ensure Auckland networks can accommodate this growth,” says Stephen Selwood, chief executive of Infrastructure New Zealand. “Auckland is in immediate need of housing and today’s announcement is a serious commitment to addressing prolonged under supply. Last year only around 7000 homes were built in the region, so an extra 3500 per annum over the next decade is substantial. “The construction of 13,500 social housing units where 8300 currently stand represents a major increase in housing for those in chronic need. The other 20,000 the Government intends to build will be targeted at the more affordable end of the spectrum, which has for many years been undersupplied. “This is very good news, but Auckland’s infrastructure networks cannot accommodate this development by continuing business as usual. “A 34,500 home development is a city of 100,000 people – that’s somewhere between a Palmerston North and a Dunedin. A vast service network underpins this much housing; Palmerston North City alone has over 550km of roads, 1,000km of water pipes and 30 schools. “The Government estimates that 34,500 homes is equivalent to three and a half houses on every street in Auckland. Typically, that means an additional seven cars in every street. Already Auckland’s transport networks are bursting at the seams and all projections are that congestion will get much worse. “The Government earlier this month signalled it was going to come to the party with an $11 billion commitment to infrastructure through Budget 2017, but it is still not clear how the Auckland Council will meet its growth obligations. “A 2015 study by the Centre for International Economics on the cost of residential infrastructure estimated that a new home built on redeveloped land costs the Auckland Council on average $30,000. This figure excludes big city-shaping investments like the City Rail Link. “The Government’s announcement adds a $1b bill to a council which is already at the limit of what it can borrow. “The city really is at a critical juncture. Infrastructure is urgently needed to address the backlog and accommodate new growth. According to Infrastructure New Zealand, obvious steps to addressing this challenge are: ➤➤Prioritise housing development next to train and busway stations ➤➤Rapidly develop park and ride facilities ➤➤Streamline planning consents for power, water, telecommunications and social infrastructure that support the developments ➤➤Recycle capital tied up in existing assets into new infrastructure ➤➤Enable urban development agencies to rezone, acquire and aggregate land and use the increased value to fund infrastructure ➤➤Expand private investment in infrastructure through PPPs and large scale development opportunities

fter record national median prices in March, prices are stable and sales volumes fell across New Zealand during April as the market moved past the traditional March peak and into a typical cyclical April, according to the latest figures released by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). On a seasonally adjusted basis, the national median price rose 1 per cent indicating that the decline in the national median price for April was less than expected for this time of year. This is further confirmed by the REINZ House Price Index (HPI) of market activity levels, which was launched last month. Month-on-month activity nationwide was up 0.4 per cent, Auckland up 0.2 per cent and outside Auckland up 0.8 per cent, indicating stable market activity. Over the last three months, nationwide activity was up 1.4 per cent, in Auckland up 0.8 per cent, and outside Auckland up 2.5 per cent Three regions hit new record high median sale prices in April 2017 as the national median price rose 10.4 per cent to $540,000 year-on-year. Regions seeing record median prices were Waikato (up 22.3 per cent year-on-year to $489,200), Wellington (up 18.8 per cent year-on-year to $537,000) and Otago (up 12.7 per cent to year-on-year to $381,000). The number of sales for April 2017 was 5845, a seasonally adjusted drop of 9 per cent compared to March. Year-onyear, sales volumes declined 31 per cent, reflecting impacts on market activity such as the combination of an exceptionally wet April plus school holidays, Easter and Anzac Day. REINZ CEO Bindi Norwell said the data for April shows that the market is reasonably stable, despite the impact of a number of factors on activity right across New Zealand.

Average rent rising faster for new tenancies Average Auckland rent continues to rise at a relatively reasonable pace despite the high demand for rentals, increasing property sales prices, and more restrictions on finance for buying properties. Across Auckland, renters paid around 4.6 per cent more on average in the January to March quarter (Q1) of 2017, compared with the same quarter the year before. Average weekly rent across all property types and locations was $531, up from $508. Average rent rose more in South Auckland (6.4 per cent), and slightly less in Central Auckland, Franklin/
Manukau, and Pakuranga/Howick (2.8 per cent, 3.2 per cent and 3.4 per cent, respectively). For new tenancies only, average weekly rent rose 7 per cent to $571 in Q1 2017 up from $533 in Q1 2016. This compares with per annum increases of 6.1 per cent, 2.4 per cent and 4.6 per cent as measured for Q4, Q3, and Q2 of 2016. “There are fluctuations in rent for new tenancies; however, rent for new tenancies is rising. “Landlords typically own one, maybe two properties. Residential property is a conservative investment and landlords don’t like increasing rent. They prefer a trustworthy long-term tenant who pays the rent on time and looks after the property. When a property is vacated, this is a far better time to balance costs versus incoming rent.”

This has been the case for more than a year. In Auckland City, which encompasses the central and eastern suburbs, as at May 8, there were just 209 homes available for rent through Barfoot & Thompson. Most central suburbs have three or fewer properties for renters to choose from. The situation is replicated across the rest of Auckland. On the North Shore there are 77 properties, in Waitakere 71, and in Manukau 133. “We are Auckland’s largest private property management provider. The number of properties we manage has been increasing 9 per cent yearon-year, so it’s not a matter of fewer listings; rather there are simply not enough rental properties to go around,” Ms Barfoot says.

The largest rent increases in terms of property size were for one and two bedroom homes for the past two quarters. For Q1 2017, one bedroom properties averaged $348 per week (up 5.5 per cent from $330 in Q1 2016), and two bedrooms $437 (up 5.1 per cent from $421). A three bedroom home averaged $531, rising less than 1 per cent on last quarter ($525) and 4.3 per cent on the same quarter in 2016 ($509), while 4 bedroom homes brought in $666 (up 3.8 per cent from $641) and 5+ bedroom homes averaged $826 (up 3.7 per cent from $796).

he Auckland rental market is showing signs of being under pressure according to the latest data from Barfoot & Thompson Auckland’s largest property management company. Vacancy rates remain extremely low, the average rent for new tenancies has increased at a faster rate than the overall average, and Barfoot & Thompson is seeing record online registrations to view properties. “The Auckland rental market is under strain. Both landlords and tenants are beginning to feel it”, says Barfoot & Thompson Director Kiri Barfoot. Barfoot & Thompson’s data shows that for every rental property that becomes available on average there are 44 prospective tenants. Barfoot & Thompson received 107,268 enquiries between January and March this year. “We introduced online booking for rental property viewings in 2015. Tenants are able to enquire about a property anytime and questions can be responded to around the clock. “It has streamlined the entire process for renting by opening up communication, giving automatic reminders for viewings, and providing an easy link for people to apply for a property with no paper forms required,” says Ms Barfoot. “The system has also given us data on rental property demand. On average around 20 people register online to view a property, but we’ve seen incredibly high demand in some instances. A record 105 people registered online to view a single rental property in Epsom recently, which was unprecedented.” The vacancy rate for properties on

inging the Blues isn’t offering much joy to coach Tana Umaga and the Auckland-based Super Rugby team’s fans. While six wins from 11 games is slightly better than their league counterpart Warriors’ four from 10, they still sit bottom of the NZ franchise. Their problem is not so much lack of individual talent as a lack of cohesion despite the best efforts of Umaga and forward coach Steve Jackson. The tight five is solid, especially when Charlie Fauimuina starts at tight-head prop, and rangy Scott Scrafton is coming on nicely as powerful Patrick Tuipulotu’s locking partner. With loose forwards of the calibre of Steven Luatua, Akira Ioane, Jerome Kaino and Blake Gibson, the pack doesn’t lack strong ball carriers. That is also true of a backline that boasts the likes of Augustine Pulu, Sonny Bill Williams and George Moala inside champion wings Reiko Ioane and Matt Duffie who, on current form, rate among the best in the country. Furthermore any team that can afford to leave an attacker of Melanai Nanai’s class on the reserves bench must have incredible talent to choose
