f the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time, then the miracle of life lies in marveling at the passage of time. In Jewish time, springtime is already here with the arrival of the Hebrew month of Nisan and Passover eve under a full moon on April 12. No matter which version of the Haggadah you use, the word “Haggadah” means “retelling” the story of our faith family, from slavery to freedom and darkness to light.
The major themes of this favorite Jewish holiday are the birth of a people into freedom and the rebirth of the earth into springtime life. Both—the world placed in our hands and the gift of being Jewish—require careful tending.
Exhibit A for the above will happen this month with the reopening of the Danziger Chapel on April 22 in conjunction with our 171st Temple Israel Annual Meeting. Soon, natural light and the beauty of our grounds will shine through new windows flanking both sides of the chapel’s colorful tapestry first installed in 1976.
The renewal of our sacred spaces and Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center is a major statement of gratitude, as we plant seeds now for the next fifty years, just as the generations before did for us.
Globally, more than one hundred generations of Jews have gathered around Seder tables to continue the sacred tradition and message of Passover. Here we are, in
Passover is the time, however, not only to reclaim memories from the past worth preserving because they nurture us, but also to think seriously about what we are passing on to future generations we will never know.
Memphis, Tennessee of all places – thankful, grateful and hopeful, as we renew the old and sanctify the new. What we have inherited in this Southern synagogue is nothing less than a gem.
Passover is the time, however, not only to reclaim memories from the past worth preserving because they nurture us, but also to think seriously about what we are passing on to future generations we will never know.
Passover exemplifies what Judaism and Temple Israel have always been about – a family of families, learning, helping, singing, praying, healing, celebrating, comforting, remembering, and sharing this priceless legacy each of us can call home.
Chag Pesach Sameach – Wishing you and your families a
sweet, and meaningful Passover,
Faithfully yours,
RABBI MICAH D. GREENSTEIN
f you stop by the Temple Israel Cemetery on Hernando Road on any given weekday, you’ll likely spot a tall, lanky figure wearing a cowboy hat and boots moving through the field of stones.
That figure is none other than Temple’s Cemetery & Grounds Director Russ Campbell and he knows the history of those stones and the cemetery grounds better than anyone. Russ has spent just over three decades caring for our cemetery and the many grieving families who have lost loved ones and laid them to rest in that hallowed ground.
He joined the staff of Temple Israel in 1991 to take charge of the cemetery’s day-to-day workings. His duties include setting up, supervising funerals, tracking ownership of plots purchased by families, and ensuring our grounds are kept in pristine condition. In his former career, he was a project manager for a local landscaping company — a position that gave him an ideal set of skills — good with equipment, working outdoors, and an eye for maintaining property. He learned all he now knows about cemeteries working on the job. He was hired by Murray Reiter of blessed memory, the former chair of the Temple’s Cemetery Committee.
“When I got here, we didn’t have anyone (on staff) digging for us,” he recalled. At the time, workers from Calvary and Forest Hill Cemeteries were called upon to dig graves. One of the first changes he made was to request the purchase of our own digging equipment.
Russ has also witnessed a significant expansion of the cemetery grounds and the construction of the Levy Cooper Chapel since he started.
Before construction of the Chapel, funerals that weren’t held at the graveside were either held at a funeral home or the Temple itself. Designed by the Crump Firm, the chapel’s size and features are unique for Jewish cemeteries in Memphis and are made even more significant as many of the furnishings were brought in from the bimah of the former Temple Beth El in Helena, Arkansas after their synagogue was deconsecrated.
A resident of Arlington, Russ is a member of the City’s Planning Commission and has been a member of their Board of Zoning and Appeals for the past two decades. He also serves as Planning Commissioner there.
He is married to Laura, and they have two sons, John (Nina) and Scott (Ashleigh), and three grandchildren, Lawson, Riley Kate and Patton.

OUR YOUNGEST CELEBRATE TU BISHVAT
Our family celebrations also follow the seasons and are an essential part of our preschool experience. Offering more than just a fun day, they provide an opportunity to strengthen the bonds between family members including grandparents and grand friends. They also give our children a chance to celebrate Jewish values, traditions, and the importance of being together in community.
hen it comes to educating our youngest children, we believe in the power of family, connection and the importance of fostering relationships across generations.
At the Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center, we help build these relationships through our multi-generational events which offer families the chance to come together, celebrate traditions, and create lasting memories. From the joyous Grandparent Breakfast to the meaningful Chanukah Program and dinner, these events are a highlight for both children and families alike.
In February, we celebrated a Tu BiShvat Family Seder in our Scheidt Family Center. Led by Rabbi Ross Levy with assistance from Eleanor Tallie Steinberg, children learned how trees change throughout the year. Adults and teachers helped children visualize this metamorphosis by gradually mixing grape and apple juice together to represent the changing seasons. Families also tasted fruits such as raisins, apricots and oranges while Rabbi Ross and Eleanor led everyone in song and prayer.
At our preschool, we understand that it takes a village to raise a child, and these events are a beautiful reminder that our Temple community is an integral part of that village. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, or part of our extended Temple family, these events help cultivate an environment of love, support, and shared joy.

TABLESCAPES PASSOVER TABLESCAPES & RECIPES
A Sweet Seating Assignment
When determining places at the Seder table, consider the designation a treat in itself. Melted chocolate and matzah make a perfect pairing—as we all know from past batches of matzah toffee—and they make for an informative place card, too! Simply melt chocolate and transfer to a Ziploc bag. With scissors, carefully cut the corner to pipe each of your Passover guests’ names onto a square of matzah. Don’t fret over a mess-up — more to snack on later! For a colorful or sparkly touch, pour sprinkles over the chocolate script. Chill until chocolate is set.
Spring Flowers
Cara Greenstein is a Temple Israel member, Shabbat Supper Club leader, and founder of food and entertaining brand Caramelized, where she shares recipes, resources, and inspiration for around the table on Instagram (@cara_melized) and her website (caramelizedblog.com).
ne of my favorite parts of observing Jewish holidays is the symbolism of food and the sanctity of the meal. Gathering with loved ones to experience rituals and recognize the meaning of the moment is such a gift. Here are a few tips to make the Seder tablescape a guaranteed memory for every guest you welcome this Passover. Let’s make it a Seder to Remember!
Passover, like every Jewish holiday, is an ode to the season. Spring flowers are the perfect nod to the time of year. I always opt for tulips and choose the color based on the decor of the dining room or accompanying dinnerware. Make it Personal
Everything mini is a win, in my opinion, and same goes for an individual Seder plate. Assign a smaller plate (placed on top of the charger or dinner plate) to add a small sampling of charoset, maror, parsley, and egg for every guest to taste and experience during the Seder. Extra bowls of each Seder plate ingredient may be placed on the table for any “refills” (likely the charoset!). Then, the Seder rituals can easily be swept away to make room for the main meal.

PISTACHIO ROSE WATER CAKE
his cake has been the star of many of our Passover seders over the years and is a favorite in our family. Some have even said this is the best cake they’ve ever had!
Pre-heat oven to 320°F. Grease and line a 9 inch round cake pan. Place the pistachios and almond flour in a food processor and use the blade to pulse to fine flour, until pistachios get as close as possible to powder.
Whip butter and sugar in a mixer for about 5 minutes, on medium to high speed, until the mixture is creamy, fluffy and smooth. Add the eggs one by one, making sure each one is fully blended into the mixture before adding the next. Mix in almond and pistachio flour to butter mixture.
Fold in rice/oat flour and mix with silicone spatula, just until blended. Beat in the orange juice, orange zest and the rosewater, mixing only enough to combine.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan, flatten with spatula, and bake for 50 to 75 minutes. Cover the top of the cake with parchment and foil after 40 minutes. When a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out mostly clean, with no big clumps of cake clinging to it – it’s time to take the cake out.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
To make the icing, whisk together the rose water and icing sugar, and add milk gradually to form a paste. Whisk until mixture becomes smooth and creamy. Make sure the texture of the icing is thick and not runny, in order to prevent it from seeping into the cake.
When the cake is at room temp, I like to turn it upside down to have a smooth surface to work with for the icing, but it’s not necessary - it’s up to you and your personal preference.
Use either a piping bag or a ziplock bag, and put the icing in it. Cut the corner of the bag and apply the icing onto the cake, starting with the corners of the cake. Smooth the icing with a spatula. Add decorations on top such as small roses, chopped pistachios, orange zest or anything else. Let the decorations set with the icing.
This recipie makes a gluten-free dense and rich cake, with a marzipan-like texture, and perfect with a cup of mint tea.
CAKE INGREDIENTS
250 grams butter (2 butter sticks + 2 tbsp), or 1/2 cup olive oil
3/4 cup sugar
3 eggs
3/4 cup shelled roasted pistachio nuts
1 cup almond flour (finely ground)
1 medium to large orange – zest and juice
1 tsp rose water
1/4 cup rice or oat flour (or 60 grams allpurpose flour when it isn’t passover)
*With the gluten-free version, the cake does slightly sink in the center since it is flourless. But still looks beautiful and once they taste it –they’ll forgive you.
This cake requires rose water, which can be found on Amazon, and also in middle eastern groceries (such as Jerusalem Market on Summer Ave).
MOROCCAN CHAROSET BALLS
took a cooking class through Women of Reform Judaism where learned to make Moroccan Charoset Balls, which had been served at a seder at the Obama White House. Thereafter, these became known as “Obama Balls”. The key is to mold the charoset into small balls that can be eaten in one bite or squished between two pieces of matzah. They also make good energy balls instead of granola.
Using a food processor, pulse to coarsely chop the nuts. Remove and chop dried fruit, which may need to be done in batches depending upon the size of the food processor. Add spices and pulse entire mixture together until finely chopped and well blended, adding just enough wine/juice as you pulse to make mixture stick together. Too much and it will be too sticky. As you pulse, the mixture will form a large ball. Now you are ready to roll. Slightly dampen hands with cold water. Gently roll mixture into balls about 3/4 inches in diameter. Roll each ball in finely ground nuts. Refrigerate until firm, about 3 hours.
INGREDIENTS
3/4 cup walnuts, almonds, or hazelnuts
1-1/2 cups pitted dates
1/2 cup dried apricots
2 or 3 dried figs
1 cup golden raisins
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 or 2 pinches allspice
Pinch of salt
1-2 tbsp sweet red wine, grape or apple juice
Finely ground walnuts or almonds

Tell us a bit about yourself.
We met at a Moishe House event in Atlanta in 2016 and got married in February 2023. We moved to Memphis in October 2023 for Michelle's job at the VA hospital here. We previously lived in Tampa, Florida, but Michelle is originally from Chicago, and I’m from Atlanta. We have been so impressed by the warmth of the people of Memphis and by how welcoming everyone has been.
I am a mortgage originator, and Michelle is a neuropsychologist. We both love cooking! I’m the chef, while Michelle gladly takes the role of sous chef — ask me about my latest adventures with my backyard smoker anytime. We also both enjoy spending time outdoors and getting exercise in creative ways, like rock climbing.
What inspired you to become a member of TI?
Having moved around the country, we've realized that one of the best ways to build community is to start in a setting where you have things in common, Jewishly and otherwise. We found our way into TI's Tribes, ConnecTI, and Crosstown programming when we arrived in town. Becoming members felt like the natural next step, given how much we have already benefited from finding this community!
Moroccan Charoset Balls may be stored in covered container for about 2-3 weeks.
LIN TURNER
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a member of the seventh generation of my family to call St. Francis County, Arkansas, home. Crossing the Mississippi River in 1820, we have been crossing back and forth ever since.
After graduating from high school in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, I attended The University of the South at Sewanee, where I was a mediocre student on a good day. I lost a semester to mononucleosis in my senior year and gained an extra year of studying courses of my choosing as a result. R. Randall Falk of Nashville's Temple Ohabai Shalom was on a writing and teaching sabbatical at Sewanee, and his Introduction to Judaism class has changed the focus of my studies for forty-nine years.
What inspired you to become a member of TI?
I have found that TI is a great place to seek and ask new questions and argue for the sake of heaven. Getting an occasional glimpse of the sublime is an extra benefit of temple membership. You will rarely see me without a book in my hands or on the table beside me unless am practicing the piano or doing Pilates.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays you can walk the halls upstairs in the Loft area, where the Wendy and Avron Fogelman Religious School takes place on Sunday mornings, and hear the sounds of guitars, violins, pianos, and a drumset! Our TIMPO Private Lesson program and group classes have reached those as young as a Jr-K student from our Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center learning violin to retired members of our community learning an instrument for the first time. These offerings are the core of the music education offerings of TIMPO, giving people a home for learning music at Temple.
TIMPO HAPPENINGS
n the two years since TIMPO (Temple Israel Music Programming and Outreach) began in the Spring of 2023, congregants and community members have engaged in music in meaningful ways. What started out as a couple classes and two bands has become a full music program with guitar and piano group classes, private music lessons, five performance groups, multiple community engagement events such as TIMPO Sessions and TIMPO Fest, and more.
On February 5th we launched TIMPO Sessions, a new music series celebrating the rich musical heritage of Memphis. The 910 Band, the premier ensemble from Stax Music Academy, came to the Greenstein Sanctuary and delivered a jaw dropping performance that had our community dancing, singing, clapping, and celebrating Memphis music. Creating opportunities for our community to engage musically is at the heart of our offerings. This includes TIMPO Fest, happening on April 27th, which will bring hundreds of members of our community to Temple’s meadow to listen to performances from our community, eat food, and enjoy activities for all ages.
