Alaina and I moved to Memphis this summer so she could attend the University of Memphis Law School through the Navy. She is active duty military, so we move quite often! The fun part about this move is that Alaina grew up in Memphis, so it was sort of like coming home for her. I am originally from Virginia, but before living here we were in San Diego. We have two rescue dogs and love to spend our time at breweries, hiking, and cuddling with the pups!

What is your profession?

I work remotely for an organization called the Council for Exceptional Children. We are a member based association for professionals in special education. Prior to this I was a special education teacher. Before law school Alaina was part of the intel community within the Navy.

What are your interests or hobbies?

I love being outdoors with my dog Millie, mountains, beaches - whatever variation of outdoors we can get! I also enjoy live music and theatre, and exploring the restaurant scene, which has been great so far in Memphis!

What inspired you to become a member of TI? During medical training it has been hard to find the time to really participate in the local Jewish communities where I have lived previously, so now that I have a little more time, I felt that joining TI would be a great way to make Memphis feel a little more like home!

I also taught religious school and graduated from TI as well as Lausanne. For college I went to U of MO-Columbia and was an AEPHI there and received a BA in Interior Design. Not long after graduation, I got married and moved to Dallas in 1990 where I was a member, sisterhood board member and taught

For decades I was responsible for business development for a commercial interior design firm. Luckly, I found a similar position to start the Memphis branch of Evo Business Environments which is the Herman Miller/Knoll Dealership for AR and the DIRTT dealer for the region. We are working on the new BKL ELC! What are your interests or hobbies?

I love to go thrifting to find decorative accessories and may have a slight "sconce addiction"! I love playing mah jongg and started a group in my neighborhood. In addition, I am on the membership committee with LIz Simonian of TI Sisterhood.

What’s less known, however, is that a small piece of that original Firestone home still shines—quite literally—each Chanukah in the house of one Temple family.

When the Firestone family sold the estate in 1949, the property was described as a sprawling five-bedroom, fivebath ranch-style home situated on 117 acres of wooded land and pasture. It included stables for ten horses, a tack room, and even a separate five-room house for the superintendent.

s the new year begins, Temple Israel is preparing for one of our most meaningful community initiatives: the MLK Day of Service, taking place on Monday, January 19, 2026.

This special day brings together our congregation to provide our local Jewish agencies and community partners across Memphis an opportunity to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through hands-on acts of compassion. It’s a chance for members of all ages to roll up their sleeves, work side by side, and strengthen the bonds that connect us to one another and to our city.

This year, the MLK Day of Service reminds us that Judaism calls us not only to study and pray but also to act — to bring our values of chesed (kindness), tzedakah (justice), and kehillah (community) to life.

Temple Israel members have shared a growing desire for meaningful, tangible opportunities to serve, and this initiative provides exactly that.

This year’s event will feature a series of meaningful, hands-on projects developed in partnership with trusted local organizations.

These include Fogelman Jewish Family Services, Plough Towers, and Memphis Jewish Home & Rehab, along with community partners such as the Hospitality Hub, Calvary Church, and Room in the Inn. Together, we’ll bake cookies for first responders, prepare sack lunches, assemble housewarming baskets for newly housed families, create hygiene kits for those in need, and more—all in the spirit of service and community.

Temple Israel’s MLK Day of Service is not only a day of giving but also a launching point for ongoing, meaningful volunteer engagement throughout the year.

Join us on Monday, January 19, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, as we honor Dr. King’s legacy by serving our community.

The newly remodeled sacred spaces, including the Greenstein Sanctuary, Danziger Chapel, and Ettelson-Wax Social Hall, now shine with warmth, beauty, and accessibility, reflecting who we are today as a welcoming, inclusive, and dynamic congregation.

Beyond these sacred spaces, Vision 2026 is also breathing new life into the Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center, ensuring that our youngest learners grow and thrive in an environment that inspires curiosity, creativity, and Jewish connection. These renovations, along with ongoing upgrades across our campus, demonstrate Temple Israel’s commitment to providing meaningful, modern, and functional spaces for every generation.
