WZC 2020 ELECTIONS: What They Are and Why They Matter The race for the Zionist Congress 2020 election in the United States is on. The election takes place every five years and American Jews over the age of 18 can vote. Why do we have these elections and why are they important?

Established in 1897 by the father of Zionism, Theodor Herzl, the Zionist Congress was the legislative body of the Zionist Organization (ZO), a non-governmental agency that promoted Zionism. These two entities today are known as the World Zionist Congress (WZC) and the World Zionist Organization (WZO). The WZC, which serves as a “parliament of the Jewish people,” comprises some 500 delegates and meets in Jerusalem every five years. Overall, Israel has 190 delegates which form 38% of the congress. The United States has 145 delegates, which make up 29%, while the remainder of world Jewry has 165 delegates, forming 33% of the congress’ body. The congress exerts influence on Israeli society and the global Jewish agenda, as well as the allocation of financial and other resources specific to the Reform Movement in Israel. Although the election won’t start until January 21 (and will last until March 11), we need every member to vote for the Reform slate ARZA to give American Jewry the voice it deserves for equality, democracy, and inclusivity. The election is expected to be “historic” because, with more slates than ever before, American Jews have a rare opportunity to make a direct impact on the future direction of Israel and Diaspora affairs. This is the only place where American Jews get a chance in a democratic election, to vote for who they would like to represent them on hard issues, such as who is a Jew, and conversion to Judaism. It is the only political arena in Israel where Diaspora Jewry has a seat and the only place where Israeli lawmakers must hear us out to allocate funds and influence decisions.
TO M E M P H I S F R O M SHOHAM WITH LOVE In November, we had the great honor of hosting 43 men and women from the Temple Israel Memphis Reform Community in our community in Shoham. The Memphis group was joined by another 30 members of the Shoham Reform Community who were delighted to meet our friends from overseas - in a short time we talked about being a Reform community in Israel, introduced the diverse community activities over the year, and heard from our youth - boys and girls - who participated in delegation to Memphis last year and delegation to Uganda this year. They talked about their experiences, and together we shared common discourses, sang, and shared Havdalah with a strong feeling of שבט אחים ואחיות (brothers and sisters united as one). It was heartwarming to hear the Memphis community members and Rabbi Micah emphasize their support for our community and finding a home for our community in Shoham - a home worthy of an equitable and liberal Jewish voice in Israel. Our members said that it was an exciting and meaningful meeting, and they were very excited to see how much people in Memphis love Israel and were happy to show our big sister, Temple Israel, that there are more and more people in Israel who look for a liberal, pluralistic community and found that in Shoham. שבט אחים ואחיות גם יחד - R A B B I R I N A T S A FA N I A

With two stints as Brotherhood President under his belt, he still strives to keep up with Sally, whom he admirably refers to as a “Super Jew.”

Radical hospitality is at the core of every event, program, or spiritual service of Temple Israel. It requires intentional invitation and welcome. Sally and Jeff Rosenberg are just two incredible examples of what radical hospitality and volunteerism mean to the spiritual community of Temple and the greater Jewish community of Memphis.
Donor Spotlight Sally & Jeff Rosenberg
Born in New Orleans, Sally grew up in Memphis and has always called Temple Israel her spiritual home. The fourth bat mitzvah at Temple’s Poplar and Montgomery synagogue under Rabbis Danziger and Wax, she moved with Temple to the East Massey location and brought her husband Jeff along for the ride. They met at a “Heb-Hop” hosted by the Jewish Community Center over 29 years ago. Jeff grew up at the Hebrew Academy and would ride the bus to his grandparents’ house near the old Baron Hirsch on Vollentine where they would attend services together every Shabbat. Growing up in an Orthodox community, Jeff mainly kept up with a close-knit group of friends. So, what did Jeff think of his first experience at Temple? “I’d never been to Temple for a service before I met Sally. It was the first time I’d heard the organ when I came here,” says Jeff. “When you’re here, you’re here for the service. It’s not a social hour.” Sally and Jeff have raised their two children, Kayla and Sam, in the Memphis community. “I tease (Jeff) and say he only married me because I was the only Jewish girl in Memphis he’s not related to,” jokes Sally. “That’s not even far from the truth!”

Sally co-teaches Temple’s Embracing Judaism class along with Judy Bearman. Sally is also known as the “Mikvah Lady” and regularly assists at the mikvah at Beth Sholom. Over the years, Sally has led a “Torah Talk and Walk,” and she started the Rosh Chodesh program that has now been adopted by WRJ-Sisterhood. She helped to create the Shelby Farms Tashlich service, occasionally leads Bagels & Bible (Torah study), and tutors B’nai Mitzvah students throughout the year. As part of the Embracing Judaism course, Sally takes conversion students to Baron Hirsch so that they can experience an Orthodox service. “Rabbi Lehrfield is so welcoming to us when we come,” says Sally. “He even gives us a shout-out from the bimah. It’s really nice.” Sally and Jeff also regularly host their neighbors - Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, and non-Jewish - during Sukkot, and they have hosted countless rabbis who need accommodations within walking distance to a synagogue. While they may have come from somewhat different backgrounds, both Sally and Jeff agree that supporting your shul is essential. “With us, it’s not just about the money; it’s about being involved,” says Jeff. “And you’ve got to take care of your own.” For Sally, who encourages all of her conversion students to join Temple after completing their course, supporting your congregation through membership is just one of the responsibilities of belonging to a community. “You’re not just joining a religion, you’re joining a people, and that has a responsibility that comes along with it. And as the Talmud teaches, all of Israel is responsible for one another.”
Led by Temple Israel clergy, exploring Judaism is for anyone born Jewish, interested in Judaism, or entering marriage with a Jewish partner. We will explore Jewish belief and thought through the reality of a pluralistic Jewish world and consistent with historic Jewish tradition. This class is a required pre-requisite for those contemplating conversion to Judaism. This class is also highly recommended for lifelong Jews seeking to grow and learn more about Judaism on an adult level.

Interfaith Thanksgiving Service On November 26, 2019, Temple Israel hosted the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service along with a dozen faith-based organizations. The theme of this year’s service was, “How To Be A Perfect Stranger.” This interfaith service benefited Room In The Inn Respite Care.
