Decades later, Cornell’s grandson is the 18th top editor of Time, still a dominant news presence, though the metrics used to measure that excellence have changed dramatically. Time’s print magazine has 2 million subscribers and remains the largest U.S. print title in news, but its digital footprint is even bigger, with more than 100 million monthly video streams across platforms and more than 50 million social media followers. Under Felsenthal’s leadership, Time established a 24/7 newsroom and video operation and won several important awards, including an Emmy in 2017 and a National Magazine Award in 2018. Edward Felsenthal will be the featured speaker for the Leadership Shabbat service during the Annual Congregational Celebration, to be held this year on Friday, April 26th. Not surprisingly, perhaps, the topic of Felsenthal’s talk will be Toldot (Generations).

A CAREFUL READER DOESN’T HAVE TO LOOK FAR TO SEE THE INFLUENCE OF Memphis – and Temple Israel – embedded in the work and writing of Time’s CEO and Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal. His first Editor’s Letter in October of 2017 opens with a reference to a framed letter he keeps above his desk, written by his grandfather, Eric Cornell, to the editors of Time, pointing out a grammatical error. Cornell, who fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s and eventually made his way to Memphis, learned about America through the pages of the nation’s dominant newsmagazine; this particular letter, written in rhyme, pointed out the misuse of “who” and “whom” on the cover. (The Time editors wrote back: Maybe Cornell had a point, but “traditions change.”)

“Some of my happiest memories are sitting with my grandparents on Friday nights,” he said, “looking up at the Eternal Light and thinking about so many connections across generations.” Edward’s grandfather, Ed Felsenthal, was President from 1954 to 1957, and his legacy goes back even further: great-grandfather Jacob Felsenthal was President from 1937 to 1939. “I’m old enough to remember my grandmother, Pearl Felsenthal, as the spouse of a former president of the congregation, taking up a shovel for the groundbreaking of the ‘new’ Temple on Massey Road!” “My other grandmother, Helga Cornell, was a warm and regular presence on Friday nights, and worked in the Temple Archives,” Edward said. Felsenthal’s parents are Gloria and Eddie Felsenthal.
Edward Felsenthal attended Memphis University School (MUS), where he was editor of the school paper, The Owl’s Hoot, graduating in 1984. He and his brothers were active in the life of Temple Israel; brother Marty graduated from MUS in 1987, and David graduated from MUS in 1988. “I was the last Bar Mitzvah (in 1979) to use what Rabbi D.” – then-Senior Rabbi Harry K. Danziger – “called the ‘old’ prayer book. I’m partial to traditions,” said Edward. “He and his wife Jeanne and (Senior Rabbi) Micah are wonderful friends, as are so many others at Temple who have been and remain part of my life.” Felsenthal has an undergraduate degree from Princeton, as well as a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a master’s in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts. Despite his legal training, Felsenthal was attracted to the news business and began his career as a reporter for the Wall Street Journal. (His first front-page byline was about Tennessee reopening the investigation into the cause of Elvis’s death.) At the Journal, he covered the Supreme Court, and, as Deputy Managing Editor, founded the Personal Journal section, where he led coverage that won two Pulitzer Prizes. In 2008, Felsenthal became the founding executive editor of The Daily Beast, a role in which he built and managed a digital newsroom that grew into a nationally-known brand. He joined Time in 2013 as editor of Time digital; in 2018 he added the title of CEO to his job as Editor-in-Chief.
As Editor-in-Chief, Felsenthal is called upon to reflect – and lead – the national conversation, and the foundation laid at Temple Israel guided him after the tragic massacre of 11 people at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. In a powerful Editor’s Letter in November of 2018, he reflected on the cover of the magazine that week: a red, white, and blue rendering of the tree of life, “a mystical Jewish image,” by artist Edel Rodriguez, all the stars having fallen to the ground save one, symbolizing hope. Then he went on:

We are lucky to have it, and I am excited to come help celebrate its extraordinary 165 years.”

Mildred Schwartz as President, 1986-1988
MILDRED SCHWARTZ COULD SEE THAT THE young woman planning her 100th birthday celebration at Ridgeway Country Club – it would be called Mildred Schwartz Day - didn’t realize what she was getting into. “She told me, ‘Mildred, we want to invite all of your friends.’ I said, ‘ALL of my friends? You mean, just my golf friends?’ And she said, ‘No, all of your friends. How many do you think that will be?’” No one who knows Mildred Schwartz will be surprised to hear that 200 people came to the party, one of many celebrations marking a significant milestone for a unique and amazing woman. Why does she think she has so many friends, even this late in her life? “I’m a people person… I love to be with people,” said Mildred. “And I hope people enjoy being with me.”
The people of Temple Israel have enjoyed being with Mildred since the early part of the 20th century, when she moved with her mother and brother to Memphis from a tiny town in Louisiana. Her mother enrolled the siblings in religious school at Temple Israel, then located at the corner of Poplar and Montgomery near downtown Memphis.
“I’d never seen so many Jewish kids in my life,” Mildred said. “So it was nice, and I felt right at home.” Later, her brother introduced Mildred, a graduate of Central High School, to her husband, Max.

“He was my brother’s best friend,” she said, “and I hated him.” What? Turns out the two boys didn’t have much use for a little sister always tagging along to the movies, so they wouldn’t let her walk with them. Until one day, Mildred and Max found themselves alone on the way to the movies. “From then on, well, you know,” she said with a smile. After they married, Max was a manufacturer’s representative for a women’s clothing company, a “traveling schmatta salesman,” said Barbara Mansberg, who knew Mildred as her own mother’s friend. “In the 1940s, when Max was drafted into World War II, Mildred took his route! She went all over the place, and did just as well.” Mildred said she didn’t have any qualms about picking up the dress sales route, which covered Mississippi, Louisiana, and part of Arkansas. “I knew most of the customers as well as he did,” she said, because she had always traveled with him, driving the car.
While Max served in the war, Mildred said she “schlepped the samples into the store and schlepped them back out of the store; you put 30 dresses in a bag and had a rolling rack to hang them up on. I changed tires…I was young and dumb.” She was also the only woman in a salesforce of 35 men. That barrier-breaking experience would be useful later, when Mildred became the first female President of the Temple Israel Board of Trustees, from 1986 to 1988. She plays down its significance today; when asked how she came to be President, at first she said, “Beats me, kid!” When Mildred was invited to be on the Temple Board, she said she never planned to be Temple President, even though her leadership skills and volunteer capacity were well known. Mildred has been president of the Volunteer Center, the Memphis Volunteer Placement Program, the Memphis Area Women’s Golf Association, the Plough Towers Board of Directors, and the Memphis Section of the National Council of Jewish Women. She won a Women of Achievement
Award in 2005 for Steadfastness, for a lifetime of achievement. “As time went on, I gradually went up from Treasurer (of the Temple Board) to Vice President to President,” she said. “I think everyone was very surprised, including me.” She calls it one of the easiest leadership positions she’d had, “because I had a wonderful board and great committees. I had great people who were willing to work.” She valued getting to know the rabbis better – the Senior Rabbi at the time was Harry K. Danziger. “I felt very honored and enjoyed every minute of it.” During Mildred’s presidency, Temple Israel launched its preschool, and she remains proud of the now-nationally accredited Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center. “It’s a wonderful, wonderful school,” she said. Since Mildred was President, four other women have held the prestigious office: Judy Royal (1996-1998), Sherry Samuels (20002002), Nancy Robinson (2010-2012), and Paula Jacobson (2012-2014). Does she have any advice for girls and young women at Temple who might want to follow in her footsteps? “The thing I’m really concerned about is involvement in the community,” she said. “I think too many young women today are meoriented and aren’t participating in the way that they could. They have so much to give, and need to be involved. There are some who are, but not enough.” “Among the best ways to judge leaders is to follow what they do when they’re not in the spotlight,” said Senior Rabbi Micah Greenstein. After paving the way for Jewish women as the first female President of one of America’s largest synagogues, and after raising children Viki and Jerry of blessed memory…what does Mildred do around Temple?

“She helps shape the lives of children as they prepare for their bar and bat mitzvah ceremonies,” continued Rabbi Greenstein. “Hundreds of teens in our congregation were mentored by Mildred Schwartz. She is everyone’s role model, including this rabbi’s.”
“I try to give back as much as I can, and I always try to be involved and stay busy.”
A passionate golfer, Mildred celebrated her 100th birthday at Ridgeway Country Club.
“I know I don’t have much longer here,” she said. “What do I want to do? What can I leave that would be meaningful?”
Mildred also volunteers in the Temple Archives, and she doesn’t miss a Friday Shabbat service. “I’ve always felt like Temple was a second home,” she said. “I feel when I walk into the sanctuary that there’s a peace that settles over me…a quiet. And I look forward to it.” Maybe it’s that peace and faith that has brought her to such a milestone birthday, too. While Mildred admits she never expected to live this long – as she said, “My parents died so young,” and she’s a cancer survivor herself – she makes a point of thanking God for every day, making every minute count. “I know I don’t have much longer here,” she said. “What do I want to do? What can I leave that would be meaningful?” But she’s not a worrier. “No, I don’t worry about things I don’t have any control over.” She’s also clearly still relishing her life: she recently bought a new car. She stays in touch with her family – daughter Viki lives in Memphis, and she’s close to grandchildren and friends both in town and across the country. “My nephew says I’m the only grandmother he knows who knows how to text,” she said proudly. Honoring Rabbi Katie Bauman & Family BY RABBI MICAH GREENSTEIN
I first met Rabbi Katie Bauman when she was in her teens at Jacobs Camp over twenty years ago. In my early years as Senior Rabbi (2002-2004), Katie interned at Temple prior to entering Hebrew Union College, first for an entire year and then monthly prior to entering rabbinical school. It was my hope that following her ordination in 2009 (after receiving the “Simon Lazarus Prize” for highest academic achievement), this New Orleans native and Little Rock gem would return home to the South and make a difference. There is no overstating what this understated, thoughtful, and caring rabbi has contributed through her eloquent preaching, soulful singing, educational direction, and exemplary social justice leadership. So much of what we enjoy in 2019 is because of what Rabbi Bauman has brought to Temple Israel and to the entire Memphis community since 2009. Katie partnered with me in a new vision for worship, music, and spirituality, and has been the ideal team player. She has played a critical role in every facet of Temple’s educational program – from the Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center and Wendy & Avron Fogelman Religious School’s cultures of excellence, to being a fabulous teacher in her own right.

She also grew Temple’s vitality and engagement through our ConnecTI community and the creation of other genuine, organic affinity groups for young adults. We are all familiar with the word for righteous giving known as tzedakah. Tzedakah comes from tzedek, literally “justice,” and over the course of her Memphis years, Rabbi Bauman has made tzedek the cornerstone of her rabbinate. Her passion for tikun olam extends to the larger community where she served on the MIFA Board and as co-chair of the Memphis Interfaith Coalition for Action and Hope (MICAH). Five years ago, only Rabbi Bauman and I covered the entire congregation in the aftermath
of major clergy transitions. One year later, we were fortunate to attract outstanding new talent to the clergy team with the addition of Rabbi Bess Wohlner, Rabbi Feivel Strauss, and our gifted Cantorial Soloist, Abbie Strauss. If the hallmark of leadership is to leave a place better than the way you found it, we are indebted to Rabbi Katie M. Bauman, her amazing husband, Adam, and their three radiant children, Gracie, Morris, and Sammy, as they head to Katie’s ancestral family city of New Orleans and Touro Synagogue, where Rabbi Bauman will serve as Senior Rabbi. Thank you, Rabbi Bauman, for making Temple Israel stronger at 165 than this congregation was at 148 when you first arrived, and at 155 when you hit your stride. And thank you, Katie, for letting us celebrate you and your family at a preneg, Shabbat service, and congregational dinner on Friday, May 17.

Dear Friends,
with other Temple high schoolers to New York two years ago, she is excited about the upcoming Washington trip. In January, she and her friends planned and staged a fashion show in the Ettelson-Wax Hall to raise funds for the Exceptional Foundation of West Tennessee, where she has been volunteering for years, after meeting these amazing people as part of her Temple Bat Mitzvah project years ago.
As I look forward to sharing the annual State of Temple Israel report with you at the annual meeting on April 26th, I’ve been thinking about all of the things I have learned in my first year as Temple President. I continually am amazed at all of the ways that Temple Israel connects with its members and with the overall community.
My younger son, Josh, is in his last year at the Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center, a warm and nurturing place where he has been loved for exactly who he is. Josh and his classmates will be graduating from kindergarten with a strong and proud Jewish identity, well prepared for the next phase of their journeys.

Matt, our oldest, is now a freshman in college. While he’s finding his way in a brand new world, Margo and I have been so thankful for the two Temple children who are upperclassmen at his school, as they have continually looked after Matt and helped him acclimate into his new environment. On top of this, Matt also really appreciated the care package that Temple WRJ-Sisterhood sent during the High Holy Days!
My own children are great examples of the crucial role Temple plays in all of our lives.
