No matter when our most sacred season of the Jewish year arrives on the September solar calendar, the approaching High Holy Days answer two fundamental questions with a resounding, “Yes!” Question No. 1: Can a person grow from mistakes and truly change? Judaism answers: “Most assuredly, through the therapeutic process of teshuvah (repentance).” Our faith tradition contends that it is never too late for self-improvement and self-correction, to change for the better, and to begin again, no matter what one’s age or stage in life. Question No. 2 Is seeing things anew always possible? “Definitely,” our Jewish legacy replies. The one-word Hebrew greeting which captures this notion is teetchadesh for a man or boy, teetchadshee for a woman or girl. In modern Hebrew, this phrase urges others to enjoy whatever new object they have just purchased, but it literally means, on a much deeper level, “may you be renewed.” Seeing the New Year in a new light is at the heart of Judaism’s shofar call each fall and this is a momentous year to feel it and see it at Temple during Memphis’ bicentennial year. Founded in 1819, Memphis is now in its third century. Our synagogue and city have been intertwined since Tennessee’s first Jewish house of worship was born in downtown Memphis opposite the Memphis Convention Center. Our congregation and city have survived slavery, segregation, and seven wars. We are facing history and are works in progress. But Temple Israel and the greater community we feed are undergoing more than soul-searching and communal teshuvah. We are experiencing major teetchadesh renewal, from the rejuvenation of Downtown, to the rebirth of Midtown, and the renaissance of Crosstown. Memphis was voted the #2 millennial city in America last year, which explains the influx of twenty and thirty-somethings who are discovering (and returning to) the Mid-

As I reflect on the state of Temple Israel today, I see a congregation of lay leaders, clergy, and congregants with great vision. Together we lead Temple in making an impact within our Temple family and on the greater Memphis community. Our dynamic efforts to promote Temple to new Memphians and young adults has produced substantial results. During this past year, we have witnessed our first increase in membership in a decade. Even more encouraging, a significant number of our new families began their affiliation through ConnectTI and our Crosstown satellite. This program now reaches more than 220 Jewish young adults each year and is a crucial key to our future. To maintain and build upon the greatness of Temple Israel for the future, we must ensure that the congregation remains financially sustainable

ConnecTI Update Meet the new board
This summer, ConnecTI welcomed a new slate of board members, including Caroline Kaufman, Jordan Saslawsky, Matthew Filderman, and Lainey Felsenthal. Led by Temple’s Community Engagement Director, Paige Mandelman, this team - comprised of native and new Memphians - will continue to expand ConnecTI’s programs and outreach initiatives. “ConnecTI has provided me with a transformative space to learn, teach, and practice my Jewish values,” says Caroline Kaufman, one of ConnecTI’s new board members. “This group is a positive and supportive force for strengthening my connection and identity to my community in Memphis.”

This summer included another eye-opening, once-in-a-lifetime Temple Israel journey abroad. Forty-one members spanning three generations discovered a lush land, historic sites, and beautiful people with names like Rebecca, Adela, and Ida. We visited three progressive synagogues like ours where both women and men lead services and serve as presidents. Our Temple members even joined in co-leading Shabbat services with me, the only rabbi on the entire island. The above could be an apt description for a congregational trip to Israel 6,621 miles away, but that’s not where we journeyed. We traveled to a Jewish community even closer to Memphis than New York City, yet still a world away. Cuba. As fellow travelers Jimmy and Janice Ringel articulated, “From the moment we arrived and met with the President of the Centro Sephardim, held the Torahs and sang together, we knew it would be an experience like no other. As Americans, we are so incredibly fortunate and we certainly take a lot for granted. Seeing firsthand how the Cuban

The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly getting to share and participate in the Shabbat service at the Patronato Synagogue on Friday night. There is something so very special about being Jewish no matter where you are in the world. Praying and singing together as one community from diverse backgrounds is what connects us all spiritually as a people. It is a unifying force that is indescribable and cannot easily be put into words. And the icing on the cake was watching the young Jewish Cuban adults who were leading the service with enough enthusiasm as if there were thousands of worshipers in the room. We were all awestruck and proud to be part of this small yet mighty Jewish community. The Jewish people might be a diminishing population, but that night showed us how strong we are and it gave us hope for the future.” Our Temple crew could not anticipate having the entire country to ourselves when we began planning this trip in early 2018. The Jewish leaders to contact in Havana, Cienfuegos, and Santa Clara are well known from the dozens of congregations,

FDR said, “it’s what you do with what you have left.” That summarizes the resilient nature of the Cuban people, where 99% of the population are literate, even in a failed economic state.

We landed in one of those tiny Delta jets on a runway alongside 737s from Canada, Great Britain, and Mexico, an omen of America’s absence in a nation only 89 miles south of Key West. With the embargo now prohibiting any American from disembarking on a cruise ship - even to buy a gift or give tzedakah - we were thanked endlessly simply for our presence. Running along the seawall known as the Malecon in the early morning, I was befriended by Cuban running champion Andris Carrion whose prize for winning the national title was a 50% discount on a pair of running shoes he could not possibly afford. So, Billy Orgel, Ken Fields, and I asked Andris to run back with us to the entrance of our hotel where we took our own running shoes off our feet to keep him going. The Cuban people have lost so much and yet they remind me of what FDR once said when asked how a paralyzed man could become President of the United States. “It’s not what you lose,”
University of Tennessee Hillel President and recent Vol grad Jaime Marquis echoed what many Temple members felt before leaving Havana. “I have received so much Jewishly in my life,” Jaime said, “but this was the first time where I truly felt that my giving mattered significantly.” By “giving,” Jaime meant more than the $4,000 of tzedakah collected that will enable 100 elderly Jews to receive breakfast for a month at the Sephardic Center, Shabbat dinners at the main Ashkenazic synagogue, and additional support for the 20 Jews who gather in a private home turned into Cienfuegos’ Jewish center. By “giving,” Jaime also meant the services we co-led, the heartfelt moments we shared, and the authentic people-topeople encounters. Just as the Judeo-Christian ethos informs America, spirituality suffuses the land and people of Cuba, specifically the religion of Santeria, brought to Cuba by African slaves who were forced to convert to Catholicism yet managed to preserve their own ancestral worship, spirits, and “energies” of deceased loved ones. We had the privilege of meeting with a Santeria scholar who conveyed this deeply Jewish idea: “If we stand tall, it is because we stand on the shoulders of our ancestors,” and because we are “reaching for the Orishas.” (Orishas are various spirits in West African religious belief that can interact directly with human beings through priests who wear specific colors representing different emanations of God in nature and the human form). I fortuitously happened upon a Santeria priest wearing red, white, and black who was preparing to perform a ritual. I knew from the color of his vestments that he was
Shango, the Orisha of passion, virility, thunder, and fire. We spoke through an interpreter as he was guiding one of his congregants to the river for a healing ceremony. Our major religious interactions, however, were with the Jewish community; specifically, in the Sephardic Center which functions as a community center for the Jewish elderly; the main synagogue where we joined Shabbat services and enjoyed dinner with an enthusiastic large crowd; and, the tinier Jewish community three hours east in Cienfuegos, whose people were equally touched by our effort to connect with Jews in remote places. These trips are more than fun times. Temple’s mission is to be a force for good, not only for our Jewish community and for Memphis but to be a beacon of light for the greater Jewish world. We are blessed more than we often realize by the Jewish excellence at Temple. All the more reason to pay it forward and give it back to progressive Jewish congregations around the world. The three synagogues in which we facilitated spiritual and musical moments (two in Havana, one in Cienfuegos) filled the eyes of our Juban sisters and brothers with tears. We were the first Jewish community to arrive in over a month and likely the last one to visit for a while, which led the leaders of the small and mighty Cuban Jewish community to say, “Rabbi, the sermon, the music, and the company your synagogue brought to us gives us hope and uplift during a very sad and challenging time for all Cubans.” Cuba was truly, in the words of my eldest daughter Cara, “an emotionally-charged and exceptionally interesting experience.” She’s right. The “people-to-people” interactions were profound and all participants will forever hold the entire Cuban people in their hearts given the fragile and uncertain predicament the Cuban people find themselves in, now more than ever before.
