REFLECTION

For decades, the Israel Reform Movement, and its legal and advocacy arm the Israel Religious Action Center, have been serving on the front lines of nurturing Israel as a Jewish and democratic state – one that adheres to the vision of Israel's Declaration of Independence as a country for all its citizens; and one that Jews around the world of all denominations are proud to call home.

I recently visited Temple Israel's sister congregation in Shoham, a home away from home, spending Chanukah – the Festival of Lights – in the midst of an ironically dark and troubling time for the State of Israel. Despite our joyous Shabbat celebration (which you can experience in more detail in the following pages), extremist members of the new Israeli government coalition threaten to override the core values—values that enveloped our Chanukah Temple Israel-Kehilat Shoham reunion—with brazen measures to weaken Israel’s judiciary and embolden ethno-nationalists.

The overturning of the Israel Supreme Court, if allowed to pass, will gravely harm Israel’s democratic nature, leav -

ing the rights of Reform Jews, women, LGBTQ, and Israeli Arabs unprotected. In addition, due to the anti-Reform views of the new government, the Israel Reform Movement stands to lose more than $1.5 million in government funding, which has provided critical support for rabbis and 54 indigenous Israeli Reform congregations, including assistance to new refugees from Ukraine and Russia.

Our Israeli brothers and sisters outside Tel Aviv in Kehilat Shoham are not just fighting for the legitimacy of non-Orthodox Jews in the Jewish State—they are literally fighting for the soul of Israel. Whether in Memphis or Shoham, we must never compromise on standing up for an Israel that is a democratic state for all Jewish people and all its citizens.

Every Thursday afternoon during the summer, Temple volunteers will gather at the Agricenter Farmer’s Market to collect fruit and vegetables that are so generously donated by the vendors there and deliver the produce to Plough Towers.

TOT SHABBAT

Tot Shabbat is an opportunity to celebrate Shabbat morning with our youngest members, teach them to love Judaism, and help them know our synagogue as a second home. This group gathers roughly once a month at 10 AM for Shabbat singing and fun, taking advantage of our little ones’ boundless wiggles.

Just outside of Tel Aviv, Israel, in a community of 20,000 residents amidst 22 Orthodox synagogues, sits a young, vibrant Reform synagogue. Kehilat Shoham, founded by Israelis seeking at least one non-Orthodox synagogue in their city a decade ago, was finally granted a permit to build a synagogue by the municipality. Formally established in 2019 during the High Holy Days, Kehilat Shalom’s Yom Kippur was the first official egalitarian service ever held in the town of Shoham.

This may sound shocking to Jews in Memphis, where our city and state’s first synagogue, Temple Israel, was founded seven years before the Civil War in 1854. It took 71 years for the State of Israel to experience the religious experience we take for granted at Temple Israel in Memphis. Kehilat Shoham is, according to founding Rabbi Rinat Safania, “a first experience of progressive Judaism” for its congregants today.

WHY THE DELAY AND BARRIER TO ACCESS?

As Israel approaches its 75th birthday this year, Prime Minister-elect Benjamin Netanyahu has meticulously tapped the most extreme government in the entire history of the Modern State of Israel. Never before has Israel witnessed a greater governmental move that paralyzes the Jewish State’s identity and plagues its future.

“In Israeli society, over the years, the options to engage authentically with Jewish identity had been limited,” said Rabbi Safania. “Today, thanks to the commitment and struggle of the liberal streams of Judaism, and the enormous steps taken toward Jewish renewal, there is a palpable sense

that the winds in Israeli society are changing direction. Given these changes, my primary role as a Reform rabbi is to return to Israelis a sense of ownership of their Judaism.”

Just as Temple Israel’s German immigrant ancestors established our congregational home in Memphis almost 170 years ago, Temple Israel members felt moved to help those in Shoham build their own community — one that speaks to the needs of roughly 70% of the city's non-Orthodox population. As such, Temple Israel has served as the “big” sister congregation to Kehilat Shalom for seven years and counting.

“Just like Temple Israel, the liberal, egalitarian, pluralistic voice that our community in Shoham projects is significant,”

said Rabbi Safania. “Our message also reaches those who do not support our version of Judaism yet they support us as being part of the mosaic of our town. Even when a loud and fanatical group desired to expel us from Shoham, the vast majority of the community of Shoham did not remain indifferent. They stood up and spoke up on our behalf. At the end of the day, these radical groups understood that they did not have a sympathetic audience in Shoham, and they abandoned their protests.”

The synagogue was officially dedicated for services and holidays, life cycle events, and family programming in August 2021. While Rabbi Greenstein could not join due to coronavirus restrictions, he delivered the dedication address streaming live in Hebrew as the sanctuary was adorned with a mezuzah and Shabbat candlesticks gifted by Temple Israel, as well as a newly designed ark and art piece by Memphis artist and Temple Israel member Carol Buchman.

“From the moment our partnership began, I felt privileged to learn, watch, and be a partner with Rabbi Micah, who was an inspiration for our great action, for the courage to dream big, not to give up, and to know that we deserve to have a place to call home,” said Rabbi Safania.

Rabbi Greenstein returned to Shoham in December just before Chanukah to deliver a sermon and share in celebration of our ongoing commitment no matter what the challenge.

“As I spoke to three generations of Israeli Reform Jews who were identical to the three generations of Memphis Reform Jews I was with only a week prior in our Temple sanctuary, it was ever clear that the antidote to the darkness of extremism is the light of our two synagogues grounded in acceptance, justice, and love.”

Rabbi Rinat Sefania of Shoham added, “There is no doubt that parallel to the commitment of the Israeli Reform Movement and our stubborn community members in Shoham, we as a community, and myself as a rabbi would not be in this place today without the support, advice, listening, and partnership with Rabbi Micah and Temple Israel, and for that I am grateful.”

HOW CAN WE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE MAINSTREAM OF ISRAELI SOCIETY REPRESENTED BY SHOHAM?

We must show up and stand up for the homegrown Israeli non-Orthodox movement receiving a pittance of American support, both in advocacy and in funding (see article on page 12 regarding the emergency campaign for the Israel Movement for Reform Judaism).

Temple Israel trips to Israel remain a unique way to connect to Israeli families and individuals just like us. An adults-only trip with Rabbi Micah Greenstein is confirmed for October 8-19 this year, guaranteeing a direct, up-close and personal experience with Israelis at the forefront of the pressing issues facing Israel and future relations with American Jewry.

Beyond our travels to Israel and financial support of the Israel Movement for Reform Judaism and the Israel Religious Action Center, staying awake and aware of the many threats to Israel’s democracy by the extreme Jewish right is equally important. Israel cannot continue to be a home for world Jewry if it shuns the religious expression of the 88% of American Jews who are not Orthodox. Not for our sake, but for Israel’s sake—and Shoham’s—we cannot and must not remain silent.

It was ever clear that the antidote to the darkness of extremism is the light of our two synagogues grounded in acceptance, justice, and love.
