We will also celebrate the tenures of Rabbis Simons and Wohlner, as Rabbi Dreifus and a new rabbi assume the two Assistant Rabbi positions alongside me and Cantorial Soloist Happie Hoffman.

In the words of the Adoration/Aleinu recited at the end of every prayer service, “we look forward to the day when the world shall be One, and God’s Name shall be One.” We look ahead to the future because our faith teaches that no matter what challenges, problems, or issues lie before us, better days are equally possible, so stay positive. It’s not pop psychology. It’s endemic to the Jewish faith we share.

The year ahead can become a year of even greater blessing if we let it be – with Temple Israel as the place to re-center. I pray that the year ahead will be one of peace and contentment for you and yours, one in which you and those you love find balance and joy amidst all the uncertainty.

Students engaged in an empathy walk, community interviews, brainstormed solutions, and designed and built prototypes to improve life around the school. Brotherhood volunteers supported the students throughout the day and helped make their visions come to life.

SINCE T HE L AST VO I C E n the evening of September 30, amidst a meaningful High Holy Day season, we celebrated Senior Rabbi Micah D. Greenstein in honor of his 30th anniversary serving the Temple Israel congregation and the greater Memphis community.

“He inspires us to keep Judaism at our center and Temple at our core,” said Temple Israel President Laurie Meskin in her opening remarks. “Temple Israel has a rich history with an equally rich legacy of its senior rabbis, several of whom we have honored by naming meaningful spaces after them,” she continues. “I am thrilled to announce that we are naming our beautiful sanctuary the ‘Greenstein Sanctuary’ to recognize Rabbi Greenstein’s tenure. Temple’s officers determined that Rabbi Greenstein’s vision for Temple should be recognized now while he can enjoy the honor of continuing to teach, inspire, and lead worship in the Greenstein Sanctuary.”

“You have given me the gift of being with you and your families through it all – highs, lows, and everything in between,” reflected Rabbi Greenstein at the program’s conclusion. “So, thank you for not only tonight but for co-building such a warm and compelling community of meaning these past 30 years.

The evening’s tribute concert included soulful performances of “Chosen Family,” an original piece for Greenstein by visiting Jewish musician Rick Recht, “When You Believe” by Temple Israel Cantorial Soloist Happie Hoffman and guest performing artist Karen Brown, “David’s Song” by renowned saxophonist Kirk Whalum, and “Teach Your Children” from Rabbi Greenstein’s daughter Cara Greenstein.

I am thrilled to announce that we are naming our beautiful sanctuary the ‘Greenstein Sanctuary’ to recognize Rabbi Greenstein’s tenure.

TEMPLE’S TEAM GLEAN VOLUNTEERS BRING FRESH PRODUCE TO PLOUGH TOWERS Throughout the summers of 2020 and 2021, Temple Israel joined a nationwide effort to end hunger and reduce food waste through gleaning — the practice of redistributing quality produce otherwise discarded. Each Thursday, Temple volunteers gathered at the Agricenter Farmer’s Market to collect fruit and vegetables donated by the vendors to bring to Plough Towers.

It was a treat for them to have healthy and delicious food delivered right to them, during this challenging time in the world.

Temple volunteers collected an incredible total of 3,906 pounds of

After a year and a half of an unimaginable health pandemic, our Memphis community continues to feel the strain and impacts of labor shortages, supply chain issues, increased poverty, and other economic pressures. The Mid-South Food Bank, which has been at the center of it all, estimates a 15.6% food insecurity rate in the Mid-South alone and, as a result, faces increased demand by more than 220% since the pandemic’s start.

Temple Israel has held a High Holy Days Food Drive for over three decades to raise funds for local and international food banks and community service organizations. “As we

fast on Yom Kippur each year, we feast on making food possible for Memphians who are hungry every day,” says Rabbi Micah Greenstein.

This year, our congregation raised $30,000, marking the highest amount collected in the last ten years. The impact of this record-breaking season cannot be understated – $30,000 worth of donations will translate to over double that amount in meals delivered to those who need it most.

All funds will be distributed between the Mid-South Food Bank, MAZON: The Jewish Response to Hunger, and MIFA.

With her trademark empathy, humor, and charm, Katie’s intimate conversation made our attendees laugh, cry, and think. Katie also discussed her newly released memoir, Going There.

ROCHY MILLER Rochy Miller, the author of Not Just a Survivor – A Portrait of my Mother, is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, Lea Leibowitz. She joins us on Erev Yom HaShoah to discuss her memoir - a narrative of an exceptional woman’s life journey, and a personal reflection on being the child of a Holocaust survivor.

Drawing on her mother’s many stories and the abundant written and recorded information she provided, the book delivers a harrowing personal insight – often in her mother’s own words – into life in the Kovno Ghetto, and the five concentration camps in which she was incarcerated.

The book is also a celebration of the life of an amazingly optimistic woman who rose above her horrendous experiences, emerged with her humanity intact, and went on to dedicate her life to ensuring the stories of the Holocaust are perpetuated, and the heroism of its survivors are honoured.

Rochy is a retired medical doctor and writer. In addition to her medical qualifications she has studied creative writing, holds both Medical Journalism and Master of Journalism degrees, is the author of a series of widely used text books in the field of aesthetics education, and has published numerous short stories and articles. Not Just a Survivor is her first book.
