REFLECTION QUESTIONS Bring the Voice with you on the Self-Guided Outdoor Meditative Walk on Yom Kippur and use this section as a journal - make it yours!

Within us, beyond us, The still small voice Urgent, insistent, summons the soul.*

As we prepare for the New Year 5782, finally vaccinated, we find ourselves traveling again, whether driving to Temple for services or flying again to visit relatives. Cars move and planes fly in four directions - North, South, East, and West. Spiritual movement for human beings, however, is about three directions - inward, upward, and outward. Jewish tradition teaches that whenever a person sincerely reaches in any one of these three directions, we embrace all three. We hope that this reflective exercise below - and this entire High Holy Day issue of the Voice - will be a keepsake for your spiritual inventory throughout the year ahead! BY RABBI MICAH D. GREENSTEIN

What has this past year taught you about your priorities?

What in your life can you leave behind?

What do you want to spend more of your precious time doing?

What is your soul trying to tell you that you have been too busy, too preoccupied, or too nervous to hear?

In what ways have you grieved this year? What have you lost?

In what ways did you bring light and goodness into the world this past year?

What has been a blessing this last year?

Who have you relied on this last year? Who has relied on you?

A FRESH START

any years ago, my husband, Jeff, and I went to Tashlich at a drainage ditch because that's where Anshei Sphard went. We had bread in our pockets, and the whole congregation walked there. There was a short prayer they handed out and somebody had lemonade to share. I thought about my own personal sins and everything I wanted to get rid of. Well, not sins...qualities – the qualities I wanted to work on. I wanted to get rid of my impatience. I wanted to get rid of my anxiety. So, as the ritual goes, I threw them out as breadcrumbs, and I was thoughtful about it. It was the first time I'd ever done that. I thought, "This is the coolest ritual. Why don't we do this at Temple?" So the next year, I approached the rabbis and said, "Why can't we reinvent this Tashlich thing? We can do it!" "Okay, well, you plan it,” they replied. So I did - with a twist! At Shelby Farms, I passed out matzah

reasons – and this I regret. But I am thankful for all that I am able to do, I am grateful to the Jews of other times and places who shaped Yom Kippur into a spiritual peak that calls out: “You can climb higher than you think.” I am grateful for the rich spiritual tapestry of these holy days: the multifaceted wisdom of prayers, sermons, and Torah, the music and the melodies, the radiance of our Temple sanctuary draped in white, the piercing cry of the Shofar. I am grateful for teshuvah, which makes the High Holy Days a turning point in my life: a time of return, a time of change, a season of response. I am grateful for my bond with my congregation and the Jewish people, the great family of Jews throughout the world: those who stand with me this day and those who do

ost of you reading this 5782 High Holy Day issue of The Voice are familiar with intermittent fasting as a strategy for meal timing scheduling, but what is the purpose of the fasting ritual in Jewish tradition, and specifically, during the High Holy Day season? The Talmudic tractate Berachot (17a), the personal prayer recited by the 4th century Babylonian, Rabbi Sheshet, is an indication of how our ancestors regarded the true purpose of fasting. “Sovereign of the Universe, You know full well that in the time when the Temple in Jerusalem was

not - the companions who surround me here, and those whose presence I feel when I hear the sound of Torah and the vibrant notes of teruah-shevarim-tekiah. I was not able to fast on this Holy Day due to health reasons.

Fasting on a personal level is believed to cleanse our souls, express remorse,& use our physical bodies to become more attuned to the spiritual motivation for the day.

But my gratitude and the offerings of my heart are deep beyond words. Temple Israel family, I wasn’t able to say last year at this time what I’m about to say… see you at Temple for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and throughout the upcoming High Holy Days! On behalf of the entire Temple Israel Clergy Team, L’shanah tovah umetukah – a sweet and healthy year to all.

standing, if a person sinned, he would bring a sacrifice and find atonement. Now, I am fasting as a sacrifice, pray that I find favor in Your sight.” In other words, fasting on a personal level is believed to cleanse our souls, express remorse, and use our physical bodies to become more attuned to the spiritual motivation for the day. The tension is the point. And many people find the Yom Kippur fast very difficult. For those of us accustomed to eating well, hunger pangs on Yom Kippur serve as a reminder that sacrifice on a small or large scale can be transformative. The pain of fasting for one day can also remind us that there are people who feel this pain most of the year, even right here in Memphis. The Talmud teaches, “The merit of fasting is the charity dispensed” (Berachot 6b). Temple continues this custom by running the High Holy Day Food Drive to benefit the Mid-South Food Bank and MAZON, the Jewish response to hunger. To support this initiative, send checks to Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund, marked “High Holy Day Food Drive.” Some must forego fasting to maintain their health and well-being. Among my favorite selections in the exquisite Reform High Holy Day Prayer book, Mishkan Hanefesh is a meditation for those unable to fast. Any person taking necessary medications for a health condition is commanded not to fast, hence this beautiful prayer written by an observant and committed Jew in our Reform Movement:

SURVIVAL AND THE SOUL

arch 2020 will be forever seared into our memory. Where you were, how you felt– the details frozen in time. Life itself was turned upside down. The pandemic became a traumatic event that fell onto the whole world collectively, and yet we were completely isolated in each of our own homes. The heartbreak we have endured as a community is still palpable. As we resiliently move forward, we begin the process of repair and rebuilding ourselves. As a mental health therapist, I witnessed my clients grappling with the challenges of sudden change and loss. As a human being, I, too, was trying to find my way through it. This year, the High Holy Days co-occur with our re-entry into the world, and with it an opportunity to cleanse and comfort our mind, body, and soul and set our intentions for the next Jewish year. Now is the time to seek out the answers to your questions and perhaps to question your old answers. But how do we begin? First, some theory. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs shows us that if our basic needs of security and safety are not met, we will not reach for higher-order needs such as belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization. It is easy to see how the pandemic would affect our ability to seek our higher needs, as many struggled with

safety.

have more emotional bandwidth to explore our inner world, which many of us neglected out of survival. Meditation is an ancient practice to connect with the soul, offering a way to detach from the looped, anxious thoughts of the mind and move into the body - where the answers actually live. Through meditation, we get quiet enough to hear the inner voice that speaks from the place of our authentic selves, allowing for self-compassion and acceptance. This quiet space can help us make sense of feelings — repressed, unaddressed, or under the surface. Underneath anger, we might find grief; underneath a racing mind, we might find that we need to surrender; underneath avoidance, a deep desire to connect to ourselves and our community. Just as we need to feed our bodies, we need to feed our souls. Tethered by a full soul, we can begin to reimagine our life courageously. Meditation does not have to be done sitting quietly with your eyes closed and legs crossed. Tailor it to you. I encourage you to go for a walk in nature. Listen to or play music. Pray. Allow yourself to surrender and be led, and trust that this ancient practice and your intuition will give you exactly what you need. It always does. Jenna Kaufman will be co-leading a yoga and meditation class on Yom Kippur. We encourage everyone at all levels to join! TIMEMPHIS.ORG • 7

aurie and Jeff Meskin have long been passionate about the Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center. Not only did they send each of their three children there to receive the foundation of their Jewish education, but Laurie also remained committed to sustaining and growing the school during her tenure on the Temple Board and as President of Temple Israel. To honor this lifelong passion for the ELC and to encourage and sustain the exceptional work by staff, Laurie and Jeff recently created the Meskin Family Fund for Preschool Excellence. This Fund will directly help recruit and retain the highest level of teachers. “The ELC provided an incredible foundation for all three of our kids, and we want to ensure the academic

THE M E S K I N FA M I LY FU N D F O R P RE S C H O O L E XC E L L E N C E “The high-quality programming we offer is a direct result of the talented, passionate, and dedicated teachers and staff,” Sarah Keith, Director of the ELC, explains. “In order to maintain this level of excellence, we must continue to support the exceptional teachers we currently employ and offer incentives to recruit Early Childhood Educators in the future. We are grateful for this transformative gift that allows us to do that.” Under the leadership of Sarah Keith, BKL ELC Director, the curriculum boasts a play-based approach to learning with a low teacher to pupil ratio, ensuring children receive individualized attention. “The goal is to equip each child with the tools for social, emotional, and cognitive growth,” Sarah explains. The ELC seamlessly incorporates Jewish touchpoints each day. Children participate in Holiday and Shabbat rituals, learn Hebrew through Movement and song, and create lifelong Jewish friendships with their peers.

Rabbi Micah Greenstein commented on the importance of the gift and what it represents. “The Talmud teaches that tzedakah is more important than all the other commandments in Judaism combined. It would be enough for the first father-daughter Presidents in Temple’s 167-year history to make their exemplary leadership and annual support for Temple their contribution, but this transformational gift is a difference maker.” The BKL ELC is an essential pipeline to Temple Israel and the future of Jewish Memphis. And now, this incredible gift to our self-funded school will help maintain its national reputation as a standout in the field of early Jewish childhood education by supporting teacher excellence, and without a doubt, positively impacting our community for generations to come.
