TIMEKEEPER P R E S S
To those who remember Aunt Fay and Uncle Mitchell fondly, Ever since I inherited some of Fay and Mitchell’s vacation photo albums, I’ve had a project like this in mind. This is also the second family memory book I’ve put together, curating passed down keepsakes into a more accessible form. Careful readers will have noticed the Timekeeper Press insignia on the preceding spread — this is the emblem of a service that I intend to offer those in search of a similar archive. I’ve seen a tendency for people to keep these precious memories but never look at them — they exist in a kind of limbo, valued until the point when they are inevitably lost. In digitizing some of the photos that I’ve found most valuable, I’ve attempted to distill a manageable slice of memory for anyone who’d like to partake. I encourage anyone who held Fay and Mitchell dear to reach out to me for the link to the photos I’ve scanned — there are a few that would make good portraits, or perhaps you’d just like to have some of these photos on your computer. In addition, if I’ve missed anyone who would like a copy of this book, there will be a print-on-demand option available through Barnes and Noble Press. I thought that this collection would be a fitting tribute to Fay and Mitchell, as these trips were some of the sweetest memories they carried. When I spent time with Fay
in her later years, she would often tell me about her adventurous past — and when I went to the places she’d gone a half-century earlier she would say that I must have her genes in me. She had that wanderlust in her early, she would say. She first attempted to study nursing in Newark, NJ when she graduated high school and, when that plan was nixed by her parents, she decided to take a job in Harrisburg, PA. “No one in those days ever thought of doing something like that,” she told me. To me, this interest in far-flung places was part of the curiosity that defined her, and filled up her later years with joy at the random kindnesses she would encounter, out by herself on Philadelphia streets. It was also a hopeful expression of the second-generation Jewish immigrant class Fay and Mitchell belonged to. Insulated from the hardships of their parents’ generation, they had a freedom and optimism that allowed them to explore a world that their forebears had escaped. I see this ebullient optimism in these photo albums, which I’ve honed in on in my selection and layout. These trips were also high points in their friendships, relationships which were one of the most treasured parts of Fay and Mitchell’s lives. They would accompa-
ny their friends on trips to international medical and dental conferences in places like Soviet Russia in 1975 and Asia in the 1980s, where they had rare opportunities like meeting a princess (I have a faint recollection of a story where Aunt Fay said something cheeky to the Crown Princess of Japan). I hope that this book will allow those of us who knew Fay and Mitchell to remember them at their best (surrounded by parrots; posing for goofy swimming pool pictures; feeding a deer out of the car they took cross-country in 1952, before the building of the interstates made such a trip more common). I also hope that those of us who didn’t know them as well will get a sense of who they were through hints like Uncle Mitchell’s wry and enthusiastic captioning (try to find the two mentions of a “bikini babe”), as I did myself. I’m glad we can all come together in admiration of these sweet people without children to carry on their legacy — it’s only fitting that they have all of us to remember them. And I’m confident in saying to you all, Aunt Fay and Uncle Mitchell send their love. Best, Ed “Godson/Nephew” Weinberg ed.weinberg@icloud.com

In the evening we saw a performance of the ballet “Don Quixote by a troupe from the Bolshoi dancers. This performance was held in a giant theatre at the Palace of Congress Bldg, while the Bolshoi theatre is being restored.
During intermission we went up to top floor (practically pushed by a wall of humanity onto escalators) where there is a giant cafeteria

After the ballet while trying to find our way to the hotel on foot. We were lucky enough to meet a young (18 yr. old) handsome Russian drama student named Konstantin (Kostya) who escorted us back to hotel. We persuaded him to have supper with us and we had a pleasant visit with this personable lad.
