Hedi Slimane unveiled the 'Dysfunctional Bauhaus' Spring/Summer 2023 menswear line at Palais de Tokyo

ROCK STAR Parisienne
HEDI SLIMANE MARKS THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS INAUGURAL SHOW WITH ‘DYSFUNCTIONAL BAUHAUS’ FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2023
Aspecial show at a very special venue marked the long-anticipated runway comeback of Hedi Sliman, the Creative, Artistic and Image Director of Celine. His latest Spring/Summer 2023 collection was presented at Palais de Tokyo, in Paris, France, Europe's largest centre for contemporary creation. The venue is recognised as the living place of today’s artists as well as a platform for emerging talents from around the world. On a personal note, Slimane has always had a fascination for the Palais de Tokyo’s Art Deco monumental architecture. The reason is because he had his first show there for the Dior Homme Fall/Winter 2002 collection. Slimane wanted to inaugurate the Palais de Tokyo for his second show at Dior Homme, but unfortunately it was still under construction then. Patiently waiting, for 20 years to be exact, he finally returned to the historical Paris venue with the Celine Homme Spring/Summer 2023 collection. With this show, Slimane wanted to also pay tribute to the institution and remember the moment in his menswear reform.
To enliven the event, artworks from Alyss Estay and Renata Petersen, as well as David Weiss (1946 to 2012), were featured in the venue. The latter was aptly represented by Matthew Marks Gallery, New York, and Los Angeles and Weiss Falk Gallery, Basel and Zurich. Slimane also worked with the estate of the late Swiss artist David Weiss, and the work of the artist was manifested in the various prints and embroidery featured in the collection.
Bringing back the rock and emo vibes, the Dysfunctional Bauhaus collection is all about the bold fusion of rock and Parisian elegance with androgynous looks and iconic silhouettes. It features strikingly sleek fits, extremely skinny ties, stovepipe leather trousers, and effortless denim, accented by fringe, sequins, and heavy hardware detailing. Most of the looks are nicely paired with pointed leather or combat boots. Slimane’s legacy as a designer who mixes classic wear with grunge silhouettes is obviously seen throughout the collection. of the highlights of the line, and the show, is a stunning shimmery crocodile blazer. Talk about being the centre of attention.
The original soundtrack for the show, ‘Design,” was performed, written and arranged by Gustaf, produced by Chris Coady, and commissioned and co-produced by Hedi Slimane. Inspired by the rhythmic grooves of ESG, the dopey drawl of Jonathan Richman, and the manic energy of The Fall, Gustaf’s live set was quick on its feet, constantly in flux, and obsessively catered to the people in the room. It resulted in a sound that was emotive and infectiously danceable.
As expected, the show was attended by A-list guests, including the likes of Thomas BrodieSangster, Jehnny Beth, Gustaf, Eddie Redmayne, Lisa Manobal or Lalisa from Blackpink, Diana Silvers, Bo Gum Park, and V (Kim Taehyung) from BTS. Other special guests included Bryanboy, Camille Razat, Tame Impala’s front singer Kevin Parker, and many more.
