Phetholo Pudi Nothing makes me happy than being me, I can’t imagine pretending to be someone just to fit in. I am going to be the best person I could ever think of by being myself and while I am doing that I will not tolerate any negative energy. If only women could stop throwing shade at each other and focus more on collaboration with each other, we could make a great change and bring peace. Let us all unite and help our sisters who are in need of peace, love and prosperity. One Love. 6

WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND HOW DO YOU FEEL IT HAS INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU LOOK AT THE WORLD?

I am originally from Vereeniging, the Vaal triangle but currently residing in a small township called Katlehong in the East Rand of Johannesburg. Growing up in an enviroment where academic backgrounds were more important than talent made me become realize how much of a talent the world is missing out.

WHEN AND HOW DID BECOMING A DJ BECOME PART OF YOUR LIFE?

It is a bit tricky for me on how I started falling in-love with being a DJ because I was born and raised by a heavy soul vynl collector. I can say I followed my father’s footsteps, the moment I fully had interest and bought my first ever compilation by Glenn Lewis, Mid-tempo Millennium Mix down. I started to take vynl lessons from DJ Kuni, the legendary DJ in the Vaal. I haven’t looked back ever since.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU AND YOUR WORK?

I am inspired by the change that I want to make in the industry and I am inspired by lots of deejays like Christos, Perrie Johnson who are already making big moves in the music industry and still keeping the consistency of giving people the truth through music.

DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AS A FULL TIME DJ IN THE NEXT COMING YEARS ? OR HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF EVOLVING? Yes I do see myself as a fulltime deejay and an event coordinator. I also want to play a role of being a stage and lighting technician in the entertainment industry. 13

PHASES

This is one of the first photo collages I created when I started to gain more interest in photography and getting my head deep into ART alone. I have known this lady for a few years now and I feel like this picture portrays the different personalities she has as an individual and they suit her very well. Photographs By

Coltat Sithole @colt_shots I am a self-taught photographer (b. 1997) based in the city of Johannesburg. Started taking photographs in high school with some of my friends, Sleek, Tale and Mondli. I then fell in love with photography. I used my cellphone to take pictures or ask a friend to borrow me theirs. I prefer to photograph realistic moments rather than have a model or shoot scenery because I need my audience to be able to feel the emotions and relate to what has been photographed. 18

Photo-shoot in Bo-Kaap

22

On the 17th of July we visited Bo-Kaap which is one of the distinct neighbourhoods in Cape Town, formally known as the Malay Quarter. After apartheid ended, residents of Bo-Kaap painted their houses with different bright colours as an expression of individualism. The bright colours we used as a celebration of freedom. There is so much to see, taste and explore. Muse : Sisanda Nhonho & Gomolemo Motaung

Some people believe that dark days make the brighter ones shine. Without black, no color has any depth. But when you add black to everything, you get fullness of color. In other words, we have to face our fears and go through the struggle so we could enjoy the good out of the bad. No matter how hard life gets, the best is yet to come because just like a box of crayons, each color has it’s own use.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND HOW DO YOU FEEL IT HAS INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU LOOK AT THE WORLD? I was born and bred in the East Rand of Johannesburg, in a small township known as Katlehong. How I look at the world comes from within, from my own mental politics, I’m a self-centered being with no influence from the external environment. However, the hooligan nature of where I’m from kind of shifted the way I position myself in life; My attitude in handling issues which is, “Striving to display strength even in my weakest state”.

When and how did rap become a part of your life?

I started writing my raps in 2017, when a good friend of mine, Percy made me realize that I have a talent of making music. He would start spitting bars at any moment has we were chilling. Because I was interested in music, I started to freestyle even though I used to be bullied by my brother, always talking bad about my music and I overheard my sister telling him that I was going to go contest at a rap battle. My focus shifted as I began to follow music artist such as Cassper Nyovest, Stogie T, Kendrick Lamar etc.

who is your role model and why?

I don’t think there is a specific person I can say he or she is my role model. My early stages were inspired by Eminem because of his conceptual penmanship and also the hustle and testimonies of Cassper Nyovest which made me believe more into myself. The list of people who inspire me and my work is forever growing because there are new upcoming artist that are trying to show their creativity and I could learn a thing or two by looking at their work.

27

Do you have any inspiration that influences you and your work? My thirst for growth is my inspiration, nothing is ever enough for me and I am always looking forward for new growth, it may be mental growth or physical growth. I strongly believe that the room for improvement is always expanding when you put in the work.

Do you think your music has a positive or negative impact towards the youth? Please elaborate on your answer

My previous tapes do not have impact at all, most of the tracks I produced were to see if I could be able to produce music in different types of genres and with that I got street credit. Though I would like to see myself making positive impact and add value in other people’s lives. 28

Do you feel it’s important for creatives to be open about their experiences? Yes, the viewers have to know you on a personal level in order to fully understand how you perceive the world, that’s when they will give you genuine support. They have to know you and your growth even though there are things you won’t just expose to the world. Creatives need to open up more about their work so that people could actually see how important it is to follow your dream. And there will be that one person if not many, who will learn from them and be inspired by them because we have to consider the fact that people have different interests. I don’t talk a lot about my life because I tend to bottle up a lot of things. When I make my music I would rather talk about issues that we have in my community and how we should unite as Africans instead of going against each other. Do you have any projects in the pipe line that your supporters should know about? I am currently working on my debut album titled “Huethopia” and so far everything is coming along, I am working with new artists which is very much interesting. I have recently released a mix-tape titled “Road To OPM”, it is available on audiomack and soundcloud. I am pretty much sure that I am bring a new sound on the table with my next project that is already in

WHAT DOES THE WORD FASHION TO YOU?

I would say fashion means being bold and making a statement based on what we choose to wear on a daily basis or on a certain day of event. At the end of the day it’s all about showing off your style.

HOW DO YOU PORTRAY FASHION?

The way I would portray fashion is obviously through how I feel, what I see or what inspires me and of course what my budget can hold when it comes to purchasing certain items of clothing. You don’t really have to own expensive clothes in order to look fabulous.

The never ending quest to stay fresh. 32

WOULD YOU SAY FASHION AND PERSONALITY GOES HAND IN HAND ? I would definitely say that fashion and personality goes hand in hand because to me, the way you dress shows people your personality and creativity as a person. Fashion contributes to how you feel about yourself and the mood you are in on that day. Most people don’t like to admit that dressing the part boosts your self esteem and get to stand out amongst people that are around you. 33
