In this setting of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ The Caged Skylark I attempt to capture the frustration and impotent rage of the bird imprisoned and, in the second part, the bold swoops and “free fells” of the bird unfettered.

Saguaro Inspired by a visit to Tucson, Arizona, I expressed my awe of the landscape, history, and people of this desert in a poem that would become the text for Saguaro. The seemingly endless expanses of this beautiful desert are reflected in the music’s evocation of space.

Hee•oo•oom•ha When writing Hee•oo•oom•ha, I was deeply interested in traditional world music, such as that of the BaBenzele Pygmies and Tuvan throat singers. My desire to explore the seemingly infinite variety of sounds possible for the human voice set me on a lifelong creative path in choral music.

We Cannot Leave is set to the translation of As’ Kwaz’ uKuhamba, a black South African Anti-Apartheid song. The setting is a tribute to the South African tradition of using music as a tool to fight societal oppression and inequality.
