Mr & Mrs Gibson moved into their early 1900s Hertfordshire home just two years ago and embarked very quickly upon a major refurbishment project including a large extension to the rear, opening up the kitchen and dining area.

The White’s home in West Sussex was converted from a grain barn some 25 years ago; they’ve been the only owners since it was made into a residence and don’t plan to move, so decided the time was right to improve. “The windows originally installed were a dark finish on the inside, which were fine at the time but times and fashions change, and they’d come to the end of their usable life. We knew we could improve on their appearance and the light they let in.” Mr & Mrs White explain.
The homeowners chose Cottage Casement windows in a colour match of Farrow & Ball’s ‘Old White’ with a light oak stain finish on the inside to suit the interior décor. A new Kingston design front door in the same dual coloured finish with chrome Samuel Heath ironmongery was also ordered.

In terms of the installation, Mr & Mrs White tell now how they were dreading it but they had nothing to worry about, “it was a big undertaking, but it all went so smoothly – it really was a good experience all round.”

bout 15 years ago I visited some friends in Leeds – they had just
moved into a three storey terraced house within walking distance of Headingley cricket ground. The area was deeply unpopular in those days, but they could see the potential in both the house and the area.
Careful research had unearthed original images of the property – giving them vital information on the design of the original front door and sash windows. Once the horrible plastic versions were replaced, the true appearance of the house was revealed – and after a year or so of hard work they made a tidy but modest profit on their now beautiful home.
Like Headingley, many towns and cities in the UK can readily point to a ‘conservation area’ – one where individual streets and sometimes just small areas are restored to their former glories. And with soaring property prices, the incentive to improve rather than move, becomes that much stronger.
Today many people visiting our showrooms are looking to replicate the look and feel of the original doors and windows – but with the benefits of modern timber performance and insulation, combined with high levels of security. IT’S BEEN A REAL PASSION TO CARRY OUT THIS PROJECT, AND WE’RE REALLY VERY HAPPY OVERALL, INCLUDING THE WINDOWS AND DOORS, AS WE FEEL THEY LOOK RIGHT, AND ARE SYMPATHETIC TO THE STYLE OF THE PROPERTY. Before Formerly the post office in this North Yorkshire Moors village, the home of Mr & Mrs MacMillan has undergone a dramatic renovation project including an oak framed and stone extension.
Due to its location, the homeowners had plenty of things to consider, “this is a conservation village and is also within a national park meaning there were a lot restrictions and guidelines to follow, including providing samples of materials and colours we wanted to use.”
Their choices were dual coloured Engineered Meranti Hardwood flush casement windows and Chalfont front door, painted French Grey externally and Straw internally. Across the back of the house, sets of large pane French doors are finished in the same colour choices, and liberate the newly extended kitchen and family area.

PRESERVED “We replaced original single glazed sash windows which were difficult to open and made for cold draughty rooms” Mrs Wilson explains regarding their home of four years; a terraced house in Leeds.
Being such large windows throughout the house, the single glazing was causing the loss of a lot of heat and generally the windows were no longer performing well enough to make a comfortable home.
“We had our installation carried out in two batches, concentrating on the worst offending windows first.”

All of our windows and doors are factory painted prior to assembly, providing complete protection from moisture absorption and maximising longevity. Every product receives a base coat of timber preservative, then a primer coat, followed by two coats of micro-porous paint. You should expect our coatings to last from five to eight years without the need for re-treatment. Should you wish to change the colour of your windows then redecoration is a very simple task as there is no sanding down required. An average window should take about thirty minutes to re-decorate.
All of our windows and doors incorporate double-glazed units with enhanced thermally insulating glass, providing an extremely low U-value. We further improve the efficiency of the unit by filling the cavity with argon gas and using low conductivity spacer bars to minimise edge losses. The result is a 1.1 W/m2K centre pane U-value.This means an 80% increase in energy savings compared to single glazing, and a 45% increase in energy savings compared to ordinary double-glazing.

Rebated glazing beads eliminate unsightly gaps between the frame and bead In standard timber systems, paint is prone to cracking at the point where the bead meets the window frame. By rebating the glazing bead over the sash we conceal the joint, which eliminates the problem.

The use of multi-layer timber for windows and doors is long established in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, but very rare in Britain. The multi-layer structure used as standard throughout our range is particularly effective in resisting warping and twisting, as the opposing grains even out natural moisture movement. It is the twisting of timber during wet weather, more than the swelling itself, which causes standard wooden windows and doors to stick.
All Timber Windows are fitted with advanced security locks that wrap around the openers on our Flush Casements and engage bolts in multiple points on our Lipped Casements. Doors are fitted with multi-point locking mechanisms, featuring hook-bolts and deadlock.

his spectacular 1850’s Georgian house with Victorian modifications in the suburbs of Birmingham had a series of very special requirements for its windows and doors. Its preservation as a house of period importance attracts the watchful eye of English Heritage, who preside over any present day changes.
The staff at Timber Windows of Harborne were instrumental in liaising with both Mr & Mrs Blacklaw (the owners) and English Heritage in order to agree the replacements and the very particular specifications of them.

This was a big project involving architects as well as the other interested parties, but we specified the window company. “Having used Timber Windows of Harborne before, we were very happy with their work and knew they had the expertise to help us with this house” Mr Blacklaw says.

The nature and scale of the house and its various periods of architecture, meant that all kinds of Engineered Meranti Hardwood sash windows were required including hidden spring, slim box variations, chains & weights mechanisms and Venetian (triple) design sashes, along with a number of bespoke requirements.
In addition, a large set of French doors with toplights were specified and a Belbroughton entrance door. The stained glass design in the door and bathroom windows were matched by Timber Windows to an original design found elsewhere in the house.
Mr Blacklaw concludes, “it’s been a long project but we’re very happy to now be living in the house.”

hen Mr & Mrs Cutler decided it was time to update their
400 year old cottage in a village near Coventry, they thought they’d found the right supplier of windows and doors, but decided to see how Timber Windows performed, “the front door was ordered on its own to begin with by way of a test of both the product and service.”
Satisfied with their new door, the Cutler’s returned six months later to replace the windows and other doors throughout the house, “we must have wooden windows in this property; the original houses in the village have a special designation to preserve them. Our old wooden windows were failing all round and we recognised we could do much better now.”
The new front door is a Norham design finished in Oxford Clay with a French Grey frame, and is dual coloured with a White finish internally. The door features Queen Anne decorative glass along with chrome ironmongery.
“We feel the windows and doors now suit the house much better in colour terms, and have attracted many nice comments from passers-by.”

F I T FOR A KING
FIT FOR A KING Nestled deep in the Hampshire countryside is this spectacular mansion steeped in history. With origins dating back to the 16th century, the wooden structure of the house is said to have been constructed using beams of a battleship, donated by King William III following defeat of the Spanish Armada.
Having moved in two years ago, the house is now owned by Mr & Mrs Burke who have undertaken a major refurbishment project to return it to its former glory following years of neglect.
“The old windows were beyond repair and didn’t open; it’s good to be able to open the windows now” Mr Burke says.
In total, 49 windows and doors have been fitted including flush casements, a circular window, French doors and an entrance door, all finished in Off White. The magnificent arched solid wood door remains in its rightful place.

aving been in the family since 1937, this Norfolk farmhouse needed a facelift; “the original sash windows were replaced with aluminium windows in the 1970’s, I always hated them” says Mrs Bidewell.
“I started out just looking for a new door for the back of the house via an online search, and compiled a list of companies to visit as potential suppliers.”

“The new doors have made a big difference to how we use the house.” Mr & Mrs Turner excitedly explain that the new Bi-Fold, and entrance doors have changed their home in East Sussex very much for the better. The Turners never felt the previous doors did justice to the house and its rooms, “the old doors looked unsightly, particularly those that preceded the Bi-Folds; they were messy in both their design and function, as they wouldn’t even open properly.”

Opting to transform their lounge and main living area, they decided a spectacular double set of Bi-Fold doors would work best for them. Chosen in Engineered Meranti Hardwood and finished in a Light Oak stain, with 4 leaves per set of doors, the homeowners were aiming for maximum impact, whilst combining this with the practical consideration of obscured glass in the toplights to avoid the glare of direct sun from above; “the proportions of the framework to glass area now look absolutely right.” “The Bi-Folds make the outside area feel like an extension of the house; we love opening them up for entertaining and often sit both in and outside with the doors wide open.” Elsewhere in the house, casement windows, French doors and a new Contemporary front door have been fitted. “Previously the front door was solid, making the hallway dark, but it’s now lovely and light. The day after the installation, we noticed such a difference. We love the design, and kept with a classic look for longevity” Mr & Mrs Turner explain. They chose a ‘Dowr’ design door in the same Light Oak finish with townhouse locking system, a Guardsman pull handle and brushed metal letter plate. “All the items are fitted beautifully, feel very solid and much more secure. We’re very happy with it all.”
