TRADITIONAL INSPIRATION

As this was “a traditional build, I was always going to use timber windows.

”

On land that had been in the family for some 45 years and once served as a potato field in a Hampshire village, Mr Duke has developed four houses; one for his parents, another for each of his two sisters and the final one for him and his partner.

“Since getting planning permission over four years ago, the project has been planned out and took two years to build the properties” Mr Duke explains.

“The architect came up with some designs that unfortunately weren’t to the style that I had in mind; they were too modern and I wanted a Georgian style farmhouse appearance.”

Mr Duke found inspiration for his project when browsing the Timber Windows brochure,

“I saw the country cottage in your brochure and took this to the architect for inspiration and to replicate – I loved the colour of the windows, and thought the sash windows were well suited to the era I wanted to recreate.” We were able to supply Mr Duke with our archive imagery from the customer property he’d been inspired by, to aid his design process.

Cottage casements, Hidden Spring sash windows, entrance doors and French doors all finished in French Grey with 27mm astragal glazing bars and manufactured in Engineered Meranti Hardwood were selected for each of the four houses.

“As this was a traditional build, I was always going to use timber windows” states Mr Duke, and this complements the cast iron venting grates, reclaimed oak flooring and hand-made bricks for example – there was a very conscious effort to keep everything traditional and avoid the use of plastic throughout.

“I’m very happy with the windows and doors, and how it has all turned out.”

specification and design in the late 1990s, Mr & Mrs Quickmire were never quite satisfied with a particular aspect of their “new old-style” home, “unfortunately,

the windows were never quite right, as our contractors cut some corners in this area.”

“When considering using Timber Windows, we were put in touch with previous customers nearby, and we also had the opportunity to speak to the fitting team. We made a number of visits to the showroom in the grounds of Harewood house; we were always greeted with a lovely reception and received sound advice too, so this was very reassuring.”

Throughout the house, flush casement windows and French doors were chosen in a shade of ‘Dorset Cream’ along with a Norham design front door in Engineered European Oak with a Dark Oak stain.

“The front door is my new pride and joy” Mrs Quickmire says.

“Previously in our sun room at the back of the house, we could only open a few fanlights, but now in nice weather, we love having all the windows open wide.”

“We were worried about the fitting, particularly as it was being done in January, but it turned out there really was no need to be concerned, as the team were quick, efficient and tidy.”

r and Mrs Brogden had one aim for their home,“we wanted to get it

back to how it should be.”

The house has origins back to 1812, with additions made during the Victorian era, and although originally would have started life with sash windows, in more recent times it had been given unsuitable uPVC tilt and turn windows.

Before The Brogden’s chose slim box sash windows and French doors, all in Off-White with 18mm astragal bars. The sash windows have Oil Rubbed Bronze ironmongery and the French doors have Bronze finished handles from Samuel Heath.

“We knew it would make an improvement but were actually surprised by quite how much of a difference it has made to the look and feel of our house.”

“The new French doors are wonderful, they’ve made so much difference - the old doors were wood but they had many bars that obstructed the view; now we have a much better outlook and the room feels much lighter too.”

Living on a fairly busy road, Mr & Mrs Brogden were often disturbed by noise,

Situated on a leafy North London street, this terraced 1890’s house has been born-again.

The homeowner, Mr Masters was keen to put things right,“our house had

he transformation of this 1820’s cottage in a village outside York is quite remarkable.

The homeowners, Mr & Mrs Milton have taken a dreary, dark house and turned it into a fine example of how a cottage of its period, really should look.

“At some time in the past, the cottage was given dark sash windows, which were of poor quality – they rattled, had thin single glazing and were the source of many draughts” the couple explain.

FINE FORM The homeowners opted for Cottage Flush Casements in order to suit the property, and to have a change from what had been in place. They chose a French Grey finish with 18mm astragal glazing bars. The Staverton entrance door has the same colour finish, and is detailed with black ironmongery and leaded glass.

“We’ve had the new windows and doors in for a year now, and have been through a winter too – we even turned the thermostat down as the house is so much warmer.”

In the suburbs of Bristol, Mr & Mrs Kilgour’s home was giving them a cold feeling, identified to be the old front door.

“Our old door was draughty and cold, so we visited the Timber Windows showroom in Clifton when passing one day” they explain.

original design, seen all along our street so it was important to keep this.”

Mr & Mrs Kilgour are happy that their brand-new door solves the previous issues,

“the house is north facing so never gets sun on the front but the house is much warmer now.”

“We visited the showroom on a number of occasions, and were so impressed by the expertise at every level of the process, Jennie was particularly fantastic – we were given lots of really invaluable advice to help us along the way.”

etaining the character and style of their Victorian 3-storey, semi-detached home near Worcester, was very important to Mr & Mrs Baker.

The house was built in 1886 and is very typical of Victorian architecture with ornate mouldings and details – the original windows were still in place after some 130 years.

“We’d lived with the original windows for a long time, however they were beyond bearable.”

Mr & Mrs Smith created their countryside home twenty years ago, converting farm buildings, stables and a granary into their dream retreat.

“We felt the windows and doors were deteriorating, seals were becoming draughty, hinges were failing and the stain finish was looking dated, presenting the property as a bit dark” Mr Smith explains.

he well-established and outstanding reputation of Timber Windows and its Guildford showroom was of great importance to Mr & Mrs Pactat when choosing their new windows and doors, having previously had a bad experience at their last property with another glazing company going out of business.

Their beautiful 1935 built home in Surrey has had replacement windows and doors fitted on the rear of the house which is also the original façade.

“We wanted and needed to have like-for-like replacements to preserve the character of the property” Mr Pactat explains.

The homeowners have authentic timber sash windows hung on traditional cords and weights with 18mm astragal bars, cottage flush casements and French doors, all finished in White.

“Attention to detail was important; very careful consideration was given to such things as sightlines and hardware.”

“We had no problems at all and will definitely return for further works to the house.”

Factory applied micro-porous coatings providing maximum protection but minimal maintenance

Glazing units almost twice as effective as ordinary double glazing

All of our windows and doors are factory painted prior to assembly, providing complete protection from moisture absorption and maximising longevity. Every product receives a base coat of timber preservative, then a primer coat, followed by two coats of micro-porous paint. You should expect our coatings to last from five to eight years without the need for re-treatment. Should you wish to change the colour of your windows then redecoration is a very simple task as there is no sanding down required. An average window should take about thirty minutes to re-decorate.

All of our windows and doors incorporate double-glazed units with enhanced thermally insulating glass, providing an extremely low U-value. We further improve the efficiency of the unit by filling the cavity with argon gas and using low conductivity spacer bars to minimise edge losses. The result is a 1.1 W/m2K centre pane U-value. This means an 80% increase in energy savings compared to single glazing, and a 45% increase in energy savings compared to ordinary double-glazing.

Purpose-made grooves on the inside and outside of the window receive the silicone necessary to protect against water ingress. Appropriate coloured or clear silicone is factory applied, guaranteeing a perfect, unobtrusive seal.

Advanced glass technology not only provides enhanced thermal performance but also much improved clarity, particularly compared to traditional hard coated low e glasses. High light transmittance (77%) maximises the entry of natural light into the home.

Ventilation channels help prevent double-glazing from misting

Rebated glazing beads eliminate unsightly gaps between the frame and bead

Ventilation channels protect against the failure of double glazed units. In standard systems misting can occur when glazing units are allowed to sit in water trapped within the frame.

In standard timber systems, paint is prone to cracking at the point where the bead meets the window frame. By rebating the glazing bead over the sash we conceal the joint, which eliminates the problem.

The use of multi-layer timber for windows and doors is long established in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, but very rare in Britain. The multi-layer structure used as standard throughout our range is particularly effective in resisting warping and twisting, as the opposing grains even out natural moisture movement. It is the twisting of timber during wet weather, more than the swelling itself, which causes standard wooden windows and doors to stick.

All Timber Windows are fitted with advanced security locks that wrap around the openers on our Flush Casements and engage bolts in multiple points on our Lipped Casements. Doors are fitted with multi-point locking mechanisms, featuring hook-bolts and deadlock.

Mr and Mrs Clark chose flush casement windows with 18mm astragal glazing bars, finished in a shade of “Straw” paired with a beautiful entrance door. The front door is the Stratfield design and is finished in a shade complementary to “Burnt Verdigris” from Fired Earth with a “Straw” frame. The door also features Etched Sun glazing and black hardware for its finishing touches.

“The house was suddenly very quiet and warm; we’ve noticed a big difference.”

I think we can all agree on the homeowners’ final comment, “it is one hell of a

.OPEN ALL SEASONS. Mr & Mrs Lowry saw the potential in a rather uninspiring 1970’s three bedroom Hampshire house – they took the opportunity to purchase an unloved property on a very nice street, in order to make it their own.

“Our family love outdoor space, so the huge garden and swimming pool that this house came with were the big attraction for us, and we’ve been able to transform the house into a completely unrecognisable, modern and spacious six-bedroom family home” says Mr Lowry.

The family took an open plan approach to their living space, extending to the back, opening it up and reconfiguring the house design and layout around the garden.

As a household with lively children and animals – Sonic & Scout the dogs, and Snowy the cat star in our photos – the right products were crucial, “Bi-Folds were ideal to let

the outside in” Mr Lowry comments. The kitchen and dining area are flooded with light.

Mr & Mrs Lowry chose three blocks of Bi-fold doors, including a very large six-panel set spanning over 5 metres wide and space saving patio doors leading out to the balcony in an upstairs bedroom, all finished in French Grey with satin chrome ironmongery.

With origins dating back to the early 1700s, and various changes made over time including the front façade built in the mid 1800s, the stunning home of Mr & Mrs Andrew has a very rich heritage, sitting majestically in a village just outside Sheffield.

The downstairs sash windows and front door were the focus of the attention, with the upstairs having previously been attended to by the owners. At almost two metres tall each, the new sash windows are finished in White and manufactured in Engineered European Redwood with fine 18mm astragal bars and hung on traditional cords and weights.

In a South Yorkshire village, the beautiful Victorian home of Mr & Mrs Leabeater is nestled into the countryside overlooking rolling hills.

Mrs Leabeater explains how the location and weather conditions prompted the consideration for changes to their home,“the rear of the house gets the weather, sweeping across the fields. This was the area where we planned to change the windows.

“Bev and Chris, and all the team from the showroom in Sheffield were brilliant, paid great attention to detail and took a lot of care. A particular amount of care was given to preserving the original internal shutters, and the fitting team adapted their methods specially to suit.”

Apart from making the house warmer and offering more protection from the elements, another benefit has been gained “the road to the front can get quite busy at peak periods, but since the new windows went in, the house is silent and we don’t hear anything from the outside” explains Mrs Leabeater.

RESTORATION

The building’s origins are as an orangery to a manor house that once stood nearby, providing a bright environment to cultivate produce for use on the estate.

bout 15 years ago I visited some friends in Leeds – they had just moved into a

three storey terraced house within walking distance of Headingley cricket ground. The area was deeply unpopular in those days, but they could see the potential in both the house and the area.

Careful research had unearthed original images of the property – giving them vital information on the design of the original front door and sash windows. Once the horrible plastic versions were replaced, the true appearance of the house was revealed – and after a year or so of hard work they made a tidy but modest profit on their now beautiful home.

Like Headingley, many towns and cities in the UK can readily point to a ‘conservation area’ – one where individual streets and sometimes just small areas are restored to their former glories.

And with soaring property prices, the incentive to improve rather than move, becomes that much stronger.

Mr & Mrs Colin’s idyllic harbour side property gave them the beautiful setting but the house needed to be brought up to standard.

“The house was once a bed & breakfast, and the previous owners had not changed it. We decided to make it our own and it has become an ongoing renovation project” Mr & Mrs Colin explained.

Mr Colin wanted to install a large set of sliding patio doors across the back of the house, and whilst Mrs Colin wasn’t sure how necessary this was at first, is now happy that they did, “I’m impressed with how they have opened up the

house, and the light floods in, I’m thrilled with how practical they are.”

he quaint terraced home of Mr & Mrs Gordon has undergone a

fantastic makeover that takes it back to its roots.

Replacing uPVC casement windows that had gradually taken over the whole terrace, the homeowners were keen to make a stand in favour of the heritage of the cottage style properties.

“We consulted the council when considering changing the windows, and they were very happy, stating that our plans for the house are as it would have originally been, so they were pleased to get sash windows put back in.”

a long time, isn’t always an easy decision to take,“The old door dated to

1912, it had been painted many times but it was warped and had become a safety issue” Mr and Mrs Everard describe.

“We had various quotes for doors from other companies, but chose Timber Windows as we were happy with the price quoted and the quality of product we viewed – others were extortionate, even those that were just ‘buying off the shelf’. .OUTSIDE INTERESTS. A pair of beautiful farm cottages dating from the 1800s were converted to a single house some ten years ago, with current owners, Mr & Mrs Carey undertaking a large amount of work to turn it into their perfect family home.

A large kitchen diner extension has enhanced the rear of the house with the addition of Bi-folding and French doors to break down the boundary between the indoors and outdoors, while the patio area has also been redesigned to suit a single level layout.

The homeowners chose their Bi-Folding doors and French doors in Calm Grey with 18mm horizontal astragal bars and Black Cottage handles, whilst their utility room has a Stratfield door and flag windows with the same options.

“We moved into the house just over 6 years ago, lured by the attractiveness of the stone building and its location on the edge of the North York Moors National Park.”

However, not everything about the house was attractive,“it became

Mr and Mrs Clark’s idea for their new house came to them in the early 2000’s,“I sketched a drawing of my vision for our ideal new home,

and spent the next three years preparing for the project and seeking planning approval, and then a further 18 months building the house” Mr Clark explains.

THE TEST OF TIME

Having now lived in their new home with their timber windows and doors for ten years, Mr & Mrs Clark are as happy today as they were in 2007, “the finish is

beautiful, and we have exactly the same feelings today as we did ten years ago; the quality is spot on.”

Timber Windows, and our local showroom in Guildford was recommended to Mr & Mrs Clark through their architect, and as a house and product designer himself, Mr Clark has gone on to use the Timber Windows product range in a number of projects that he has been involved in since, “I would be

disappointed if I couldn’t use the products now.”

Mr Clark describes the maintenance of the products and his day-to-day experience of living with them, “we clean them every two months, with a

simple wipe down of the frames included. The south facing side windows were only repainted in the past year, and we don’t expect we’ll be redecorating the front for at least another couple of years; the finish has lasted extremely well.”

“We avoided stark white for the joinery, as we prefer a softer finish and I feel this has helped keep the house looking as good now as it did when it was built.”
