RESTRICTIONS TO PROTECT NATIVE TREES FROM PESTS

Restrictions have been introduced on the import of most species of oak into England as part of new regulations to protect native trees from the threat of Oak Processionary Moth (OPM).

The movement of certain oak trees into the UK’s OPM Protected Zone (an area of the EU declared free of the pest) is banned unless specific conditions are met. This covers both imports from overseas and movement

The measures cover all oaks (Quercus) – with the exception of cork oak (Quercus suber) – which have a girth of 8cm or more at 1.2 metres above the root collar and are imported or are moving into the Protected Zone from other parts of England. The regulations apply to all businesses which import and move oak trees.

Defra chief plant health officer Nicola Spence said: “Protecting our country from tree pests and diseases is vital to safeguard our environment, economy and our health.

“That is why we are introducing tighter restrictions on the importation of oak trees to England, and the movement of oak trees out of certain parts of South East England which are infested with OPM. “Through investment, research and legislation we will continue to help protect our precious oak trees for years to come.”

OPM caterpillars feed on oak leaves and can increase trees’ vulnerability to attack by other pests and diseases, making them less able to withstand adverse weather conditions, such as drought and floods.

The Forestry Commission, councils and land managers tackle the pest which affects Greater London and several surrounding counties with an annual control programme of tree treatment.

The new restrictions follow the launch of the Government’s first Tree Health Resilience Strategy which pledged tough action to protect the nation’s trees from pests, diseases and climate change. A key element is the Action Oak campaign which seeks to protect the UK’s 121 million oak trees for future generations.

he timber decking market has evolved considerably in recent years to give specifiers and end users alike a much wider choice of materials. Despite this, pressure treated timber has held onto its top spot as the UK’s favourite material for deck building, particularly for the support structure. It has served the market since

decking popularity soared in the UK in the early noughties. Its natural appearance is a primary reason for its ongoing success coupled with cost, it being competitively priced compared to the newer arrivals. For installers of pressure treated timber, it is also incredibly easy to work with, not to mention its versatility which allows much creative freedom. Put renewable, sustainable and environmentally responsible into the mix and its position is easy to understand.

Pressure treated timber is commonly made from widely available plantation grown softwood which is impregnated with a wood preservative in an industrial treatment plant to make it more durable and allowing its effective use in situations that wouldn’t ordinarily be possible.

Metal web joists and light weight engineered joists are becoming increasing popular in the construction industry, particularly for home builds. Whilst this type of joist does offer many great benefits over traditional solid timber joists, they do perform very differently in a fire scenario. In wood-based floors, failure will occur some time after the fire has entered the floor cavity and started charring the joists. In relation to solid timber joists, metal-web joists have less sacrificial material resulting in a reduced time to failure from when the fire entered the floor cavity. However with correctly tested fire protection products, metal-web joist floors can perform equally or better than solid timber joisted floors’.
