To be able to hear the word of GOD for the first time

We would like to introduce you to Gianfranco. He is a little 5 year old who attends our feeding program in Cullpa every week and he is completely deaf. The adults and some of the children at the program thought that he was just slow and stupid until we told them that wasn’t the case. When he was 6 months old his father left his mother for another woman. They have not seen him since. It wasn’t until Gianfranco was 2 years old that his mother, Jessica, realized there was something wrong. She took him to the doctor and learned that her son was deaf. At that point, Jessica’s father told her that “Gianfranco needs to die” and that he would be better off dead. Gianfranco and his mother live in an adobe home with her parents, three of her brothers and their wives and their children. We believe there are 12 people all together. They are very poor, have no running water, and raise animals and potatoes. Even though he can’t hear, Gianfranco seems to understands prayer.

His little hands go together and his eyes close as we pray. When we have a movie night he’s there watching very intently. His mother worries so much and when she tries to talk about him she becomes so emotional that she can hardly speak. She knows that there is nothing they can do to help him because they have no money. She also doesn’t understand why Christians would help and she wants to learn more about the Lord. In the mountains here in Huancayo there isn’t anything offered to help a deaf person. Since he can’t hear and there isn’t any type of program he will never be able to read, speak or write. He has no future at all.

We know that there is a surgery that can be done in Lima that consists of an implant that would allow him to hear. This is a onetime surgery that doesn’t have to be redone as he grows. We traveled to Lima to have him examined and the doctor believes he is a candidate for implants. The doctor said that since he is past the age of two that learning language would be difficult and slow but not impossible.

Gianfranco will have one last test done next week and we will know for sure. If the last test says all is good we’ll need to raise money for the surgery. We’ll be looking at around $27,000. In the future this boy will be able to hear and read the word of GOD for the first time.
