The Goshorns Step by Step January 2016 STARTING A NEW YEAR We’re very excited about the year ahead and what it will produce. Since we returned from the States we’ve had an average of 60 kids at the Saturday feeding program. This time of year, December through February is summer break and there is no school. This means there are a lot more kids going without food. We’ve talked with our team, and everyone agrees we can and should add another day to the feeding program until school starts again.

We’ve also changed our Kids Club from Sundays to Saturdays following the feeding program. This will enable more kids to participate from the feeding program. We are averaging 30-40 kids at the kids club now. They have been learning about Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, and what it means for them and all of us. It’s so amazing to watch these kids and hear them respond.

This may be hard for you to believe, but we have yet another new director at the orphanage. He seems to want us to continue as normal, but we’ve heard this before. Please pray that we can continue as he says we can and that these kids will grow in Christ.

A lot of you have heard that Jennifer and I were asked by Juan Jose who is head of languages at a university here, to help out by volunteering with English. He said the students are not very motivated because this is a required subject. He also said that a lot of students have problems with alcohol, sex and so on. He wants us to use scripture to help with English and also teach them about Christ. This could be an opportunity to reach 2000 students. We need prayer on this. We have a lot going on and a lot more that’s going to start in the Spring. We are hopeful that we can delegate more to our Peruvian team.

As of now 2 teams from the States coming in June and July. Even though these require a great deal of time, they are great relationship builders. We would like one more if possible, preferably a medical team. We would need to know A.S.A.P.

Who’s Learning from Who?

I sometimes wonder who’s learning from who here in Peru. I told you about the family with ten children that have absolutely nothing. No food, a dirt floor for a bed, and a partial roof over the one room they all share and call home. The only reason they have clothes is because people donate them to the family. These kids come to our feeding program and kids club every week. The children treat each other with the most amazing respect and watch out for each other. At the feeding program, one of the older sisters Melisa, who is twelve, always makes sure that her little sister, Julie eats first. Melisa is so hungry herself and always eats two full plates of food, but she patiently attends to the little one first. Jennifer has started feeding Julie. It took a while for her to trust Jennifer, but now they are friends and Melisa can eat when everyone else does.

These kids always make sure to help wash the dishes after feeding program. At the kids club they can’t wait to play, dance, do crafts and hear stories from the Bible. As I said, some of them don’t attend school because they have to work making bricks. After we finish a lesson and ask questions they are jumping in with very thoughtful responses. When we pray they are very intense and show such gratitude. They are thankful for everything. I always thought I was thankful, but I’m learning from these kids I am not as thankful as I should be. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”.

This is easier said than done. Sure I’m thankful when I can climb into a nice soft bed, eat whenever I want and so on, but would I still be thankful if I had to sleep on a dirt floor and actually know the pain of hunger? I know I’m to be thankful, but would I be? It’s truly refreshing to work with children that are so open and have no expectations of what others think life owes them. I’ve learned that maybe they have a better concept of life then most of us do. I am thankful to have the opportunity to be able to learn from these children. I pray that we all step back and look around. Look at all the blessings we have that we take for granted. These kids know that they’re so blessed just to have a meal on Saturday afternoon. We are thankful and blessed to be a part of that.

Colossians 3:15-17 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
