The Goshorns Step by Step February 2020 Grandparents for the second time!!!!!! Mathew & Amber became the parents of Malakai (Kai) on 1/30/2020 one day before Matthew’s birthday. He was 6lbs 11 oz. & 19”. Someone asked me what it’s like to be a grandpa, I thought for a minute and said it seems normal, what doesn’t sound correct is that my sons are dads:) We left Peru on Jan. 1 to attend meetings with all the missionaries around the world from our agency. The meeting was on the island of Cyprus. It was an awesome week of learning and sharing with our teammates. When it ended we decided that since we haven’t taken a vacation in years, and we were 30 minutes from Israel, we would go. This was one of the most humbling trips I’ve ever been on and it literally brought Scripture to life. After this we headed to the states for the birth of Malakai. Before we left Peru we finished up our Christmas adopt a family. Each year it continues to grow. This year we had 62 sponsors. We also were blessed to have a store in Huancayo donate toys. We are so thankful for this event, it was such a blessing to so many families. We have arranged with the orphanage for Marguarita (age 17) and her sister Lucilla (age 14) to move in with us in March. We’ll be helping Marguarita financially to attend college and for Lucilla to continue her education. The sisters were going to be split up and sent to different areas of Peru. They were very anxious about being put with virtual strangers and wanted to stay together. Since we have know them
for 6 years, and Marguarita had attended the Bible study at the house last year, we wanted to help. We also received permission from the orphanage to have 6 other young girls come to our house for Bible study this year. We are very excited about this. A new Bible study for the moms of the kids in our program will be starting in March. Our friend Natalia will be leading and we will provide spiritual support and materials. We need lots of prayers for all these Bible studies as well as the feeding programs and the prison ministry. We’re going to have a medical team travel to the jungle this June. We have a lot of prep work to get done before then so this is another prayer request. The coffee is headed to the states right now. Our roasting company in Alabama also helped us import it. Daniel and Matthew are going to coordinate things on this end and get the coffee shipped as orders come in. We need help from all of you in order to sell this coffee. YOUR BEING WATCHED
She joined our Bible study at the prison 18 months ago. Her name is Miriam and she is serving 12 years for drug trafficking. Our study that day was about being a good example of Christ in our daily lives. What did that look like? How do we know people see Christ in us? She said to me “ I watched you for two years before I joined the study, because I didn’t trust you.” I was surprised, not that she didn’t trust me, after all I was a foreigner teaching about Christ, but that it took two years. She went on to tell me that she watched how I interacted with the ladies in the group, and how they responded to me. She watched as I showed up every week, rain or shine. She watched as I said yes to every invitation the director gave me to all the different events throughout the year. And how on Christmas and Mother’s Day I not only brought gifts for the group but for every woman in the prison. Yes, she certainly did watch me. We never know who is watching, listening or judging. So, show Christ always, and if you have to, use words. The ministry of presence is powerful. Just before Christmas, after our final Bible study for the year, Miriam pulled me aside and stuffed something into my hand. She spoke softly and said that she had been reading her Bible throughout the week and that she had been reading about Paul. She said she noticed that as he traveled to share the gospel people along the way gave him food, a place to stay and money for his journey. “The people helped him share the gospel” she said. She wanted to be one of those people. I put what she gave me in my pocket and thanked her. When I got outside the prison, I took it out and saw that she had given me 30 soles which is about 10 dollars. Wow, just wow. To give you some perspective, 10 dollars can buy a healthy meal for the 40 kids that attend our feeding program on Saturday. Also, you need to know that many women are stuck in prison after serving their sentence because they cannot afford to pay a lawyer for their release documents. So, the fact that Miriam decided to put that money towards ministry rather than self is tremendous. This ministry has truly been a blessing and I am so thankful to you who make it possible with your financial support and prayers. The Lord is changing lives, mine included.
