The Goshorns Step by Step April 2014

Becoming Part of the Community It’s hard to believe we’ve been in Peru over two months. We’re doing great learning our way around the area and learning the culture. Jennifer & Tim started some tutoring classes to help perfect the language. It’s great to be able to speak with the Peruvians and understand each other, but we know we’re not so grammatically correct at times, and so we need to improve on that. We were invited to a small house church in our neighborhood, which was great. We felt so very welcomed. They made sure we didn’t leave hungry, even though we didn’t want to eat. They cooked everything on a dirt floor and we were worried we’d get sick, but we ate and the next day we all felt fine. We were also invited to a Pachamanca. This is a huge picnic where they dig a pit in the ground, build an igloo of rocks over the pit, and build a fire inside it. After about 2 hours, the rocks become very, very hot. They then take off the top of the “igloo” and start filling it with potatoes with a layer of hot rocks, then more vegetables & more hot rocks. On top of those rocks then comes all kinds of meat, then more rocks. After all the food is in they cover everything with green growth from around the field, then a tarp and then it all gets a heavy layer of dirt to help insulate it. One hour later we uncovered everything & ate. It was very good! As you can see, we’ve been building some great relationships in and around our community. God is definitely at work here. The kids are making friends and they are able to show others the love of Christ. Daniel and Matthew are helping out at an Aids orphanage one day a

week, and Daniel is also teaching English at a school. Jennifer is teaching a group of Peruvian girls English along with Homeschooling Katie. Tim has had meetings with church leaders in the community, and there are several opportunities there for growth. We also have some meetings with an orphanage and another church about doing some activities in the evenings. We continue to join in on a Thursday night prayer group & Friday night Bible study with Peruvians. As we’ve said before, our main purpose in our first year is to learn. We feel we can do this and share Christ at the same time.

Our food is under all the dirt.

Food is unburied & it’s time to eat.
