Der Ursprung der organisierten Zivilgesellschaft liegt in England. Erste Verbände zur Bekämpfung der verheerenden sozialen Bedingungen, die mit der Industrialisierung und Verstädterung einhergingen wurden im späten 18. Jahrhundert gegründet. Zeitverzögert kam es auch zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts in Kontinentaleuropa zu ähnlichen Aktivitäten, Gründungen von Vereinen und Verbänden. Durch das Erstarken des Mittelstands gab es mehr und mehr Menschen mit Bildung, Zeit und Wohlstand sich in Vereinen zu engagieren.

Organized civil society was originated in England, during the late 18th century. The first associations started to tackle the devastating social conditions associated with industrialization and urbanization.

At the beginning of 19th century, with a slight delay, similar activities were conducted in continental Europe, which introduced the formation of clubs and associations. The growth of the middle class led to a rise of well educated citizens with the time and wealth to get involved in associations.

1815 kam es im Abkommen des „Zweiten Pariser Friedens“ zur Schaffung eines ersten zwischenstaatlichen Bündnisses mit regelmäßigen Kongressen und dem gemeinsamen Ziel für Frieden und Wohlstand in Europa zu sorgen. Der Ausbau der Schieneninfrastruktur sowie die Verbesserung der Kommunikation (Post sowie Morse) führten dazu, dass die Austauschmöglichkeiten zwischen den Ländern sich deutlich verbesserte. Dadurch wurde auch die Entwicklung von internationalen nichtstaatlichen Organisationen gefördert.

In 1815, the „Treaty of Paris“ was established which saw the first intergovernmental alliance with regular meetings and congresses and the common goal of peace and prosperity in Europe. The expansion of the rail infrastructure and the improvement of ways of communication (Mail and Morse) significantly increased exchange opportunities between countries, which expanded the chances for the development of international non-governmental groups.

Abgesehen von kirchlichen Orden, die schon im frühen Mittelalter entstanden, treten die ersten internationalen Nichtregierungs-Organisationen Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts auf. Gegründet 1855 zählt die „World Alliance of YMCA“ (CVJM) zu eine der ältesten Organisationen neben dem von Henri Dunant in 1859 gegründeten Internationalen Roten Kreuz.

Apart from christian orders, which can already be found in the early middle ages, in 1855 the first international nongovernmental organisation appeared, the „World Alliance of YMCA“, alongside the „International Red Cross“ founded by Henri Dunant in 1859. Towards the end of the 19th century, there was a sharp rise of NGOs as well as a strong competion of cities for hosting international conferences.

Brussels and Paris were the prime locations where conferences took place.

Aus dem Völkerbund kam es 1945 zur Gründung der Vereinten Nationen. In Artikel 71, Kapitel X der Charta wurde Organisationen, die weder Regierungen noch Mitgliedstaaten sind, ein Konsultativstatus gegeben.

Zu einer ersten Definition kam es 1950, NGOs wurde außerdem Beobachterstatus in der Generalversammlung und weiteren Organen der UN gewährt.

This backed the first “World Congress of International Associations” in 1910, which gathered key representatives of over 132 non-governmental organizations and 13 countries, constituting the “Union of International Associations” (UIA). After the cancellation of further congresses due to World War I, the founders of the UIA increased the efforts of a League of Nations, which was later founded at the Paris Peace Conference in 1920.

The development of the League of Nations based in Geneva, led many NGOs to relocate their headquarters to Switzerland, especially after the outbreak of World War II. Following the League of Nations, the United Nations were founded in 1945, introducing Article 71, Chapter X of the Charter, which allowed organizations that are neither governments nor member states to retain their consultative status. The first definition came in 1950, and NGOs were also granted observer status in the General Assembly and other UN committees.

Auf Initiative von Henri La Fontaine und Paul Otlet wurde 1908 das „Central Bureau of International Organisations“ gegründet, um einem Teil der damals ca. 100 internationalen NGOs ein Hauptquartier in Brüssel zu geben. Als direkte Initiative kam es 1910 zum ersten „World Congress of International Associations“, mit Vertretern von 132 Nichtregierungsorganisationen und 13 Staaten und der Gründung der „Union of International Associations“ (UIA). Nach Absage weitere Kongresse aufgrund des ersten Weltkriegs verstärkten die Gründer der UIA das Bestreben einer League of Nations. 1920 kam es bei der Pariser Friedenskonferenz zur Gründung des Völkerbunds. Die Entwicklung des Völkerbunds mit Sitz in Genf führte auch bei vielen NGOs zu einer Verlagerung der Hauptsitze in der Schweiz. Der Ausbruch des zweiten Weltkriegs verstärkte diese Tendenz.

Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhundert kam es somit verstärkt zu Gründungen von NGOs, es häuften sich Internationale Konferenzen und Städte traten in Wettbewerb um die Gastgeberschaft. Brüssel und Paris zählten zu den häufigsten Konferenzorten, was auch ein verstärktes Ansiedeln von NGOs nach sich zog.

Die Globalisierung ab Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts, Gründungen wie die der Welthandelsorganisation und anderen mit rein kapitalischem Interesse führten dazu, dass NGOs zu den Vertretern der Menschen und Umwelt wurden.

The globalisation, mainly starting in the fifties of the last century led to the founding of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and others with a pure capitalistic interest which led to NGOs becoming the representatives of people and the environment.

Infolge brutaler Kriege, verstärktem Umweltbewusstsein und Menschenrechtsverletzungen kam es in den 60er und 70er Jahren zur Gründung vieler, heutzutage global agierender NGOs wie Amnesty International (1961 in London) oder Greenpeace (1971 in Vancouver).

As a result of barbaric wars, environmental awareness, intensification on human rights violations, many global NGOs such as Amnesty International (1961 in London) and Greenpeace (1971 in Vancouver) were formed in the 1960s and 1970s and are still the prime active organisations until today.

Seit 1996 wird NGOs ein erweiterter Konsultativstatus im Wirtschafts- und Sozialrat der Vereinten Nationen (ECOSOC), einem der Hauptorgane, gewährt.

Internationale Beziehung zwischen NGOs sind speziell nach Ende des Kalten Krieges enorm gewachsen. Auf jährlichen Gipfeltreffen wie dem World Social Forum (seit 2001) oder dem World NGO Day (seit 2011) vernetzen sich tausende von NGOs zur globalen Zusammenarbeit.

Zu den größten Herausforderungen der NGOs zählen heute Klimawandel, Umweltverschmutzungen, Artensterben und Menschenrechtsverletzungen. Speziell der Ausbruch der Corona-Pandemie 2020 hat viele der bereits bestehenden Problematiken verstärkt.

Since 1996 NGOs have been granted extended consultative status in the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), which is one of the main principle organs.

International relationships between NGOs grew rapidly, especially after the end of the Cold War. At annual summits such as the World Social Forum (since 2001) or World NGO Day (since 2011), thousands of NGOs network for global cooperation.

The greatest challenges faced by NGOs nowadays include climate change, pollution, the extinction of species and human rights violations. The outbreak of the coronapandemic in 2020 in particular has exacerbated many of the existing problems.

Bis heute ist der Begriff der Nichtregierungsorganisation (NGO) noch nicht präzise definiert, ist eine Klassifizierung ebenso nicht eindeutig. Generell gibt es zwei unterschiedliche Wege einer Klassifizierung, erstens nach Aktionsradius und zweitens nach Ausrichtung.

Appearing first in the 1950s, the term “non-governmental organization”, short NGO, has not yet been precisely defined. In general, there are two different ways of classifying an organization. Either by their radius of action or by their orientation.

Architektur für die organisierte Zivilgesellschaft Architecture for Associations Zu Beginn des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts nahmen die beiden belgischen Anwälte Henri La Fontaine und Paul Otlet eine wichtige Stellung als Friedensaktivisten (u.a.

Friedensnobelpreis 1913) und als visionäre Vordenker der Vereinten Nationen ein.

Throughout the beginning of twentieth century, the two Belgian lawyers Henri La Fontaine and Paul Otlet held a vital position as peace activists (including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1913) and were key visionary thought leaders of the United Nations.

Die von ihnen gegründete „Union of International Associations“ sollte zudem das globale Forum für Nichtregierungsorganisationen in Brüssel bilden. Der Palais Mondial (später Mundaneum) war ab 1920 der zentrale Platz in Otlets Traum einer neuen „World City“. Durch die Verlagerung des Hauptsitz der League of Nations nach Genf beauftragten sie 1929 Le Corbusier mit dem Bau des Mundaneum in Genf.

Founded by them in 1907 the “Union of International Associations” generated a global forum for non-governmental organizations in Brussels. From 1920 the Palais Mondial (later Mundaneum) was the centerpiece in Otlet‘s vision of a new “World City”.

Der pyramidenförmige Entwurf als Weltzentrum für Wissenschaft, Dokumentation und Bildung, mit Büroflächen für Assoziationen, Bibliothek, Universität, Konferenzzentrum und verschiedensten Museen wurde nie umgesetzt.

Bedingt durch die hohe Abhängigkeit von Spendengeldern und der damit verbundenen Verpflichtung, diese so effektiv wie möglich einzusetzen, waren viele NGOs über lange Zeiträume nicht in der Lage, eigene Gebäude zu errichten.

Relocating the headquarters of the League of Nations to Geneva in 1929, they commissioned Le Corbusier to build the Mundaneum in Geneva.

The pyramid-shaped design which supposedly was meant to act as a world centre for science, documentation and education, with office space for associations, library, university, conference rooms and various museums was never implemented.

For a long period, the high dependency on donations and the associated obligation to use them as effectively as possible resulted in many NGOs not being able to built their own buildings.

Ab Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts kam es immer häufiger zu Gründungen von philanthropischen Stiftungen wohlhabender Familien und Persönlichkeiten. So vollendeten Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates 1968 in New York City ein Hauptgebäude für die Ford Foundation, ein Hybrid aus Büro- und Tagungsgebäude mit einem grünen offenen Hof.

Angelehnt an die Tradition des Campus lies die Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle für 500 Mio. Dollar Anfang der 2010er ein Hauptquartier nach dem Motto „Lokale Wurzeln, Globale Mission“ errichten.

Das Gebäudeensemble bietet Platz für 1200 Mitarbeiter und einem wiederbelebten Habitat für Wildvögel.

Für Nichtregierungsorganisationen, die nicht über vergleichbare private finanzielle Ressourcen verfügen, bleibt häufig nur die Anmietung von Büroflächen.

Die Ländersektion von Amnesty International UK konnte aufgrund einer Großspende ein eigenes Gebäude errichten. Das 2007 in Ostlondon eröffnete „Human Rights Action Centre“ bildet den lebendigen Mittelpunkt der Arbeit, ist Informationszentrum für Passanten, bietet Gastronomie - und Konferenzflächen.

In der Schweiz hat sich Greenpeace unabhängig von Großspenden 2014 entschlossen, als Teil der Genossenschaft Kalkbreite effektiver zu Arbeiten und auf lange Sicht effizienter mit den Spenden umgehen zu können.

Die neuen Büroflächen für 45 Mitarbeiter seien besonders Energieeffizient und kompakt, so Greenpeace CH.

From the mid of the 20th century, philanthropic foundations were set up by wealthy families and leading figures.

In 1968, Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates completed a main building for the Ford Foundation in New York City, a hybrid of office and conference building with a green open courtyard.

Based on the tradition of the campus, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation had a headquarters built in Seattle for 500 million dollars in the early 2010s according to the slogan “Local Roots, Global Mission”. The building complex offers space for 1.200 employees and a revitalized habitat for wild birds.

For non-governmental organizations that do not have comparable private financial resources, all that is left is renting office spaces. The country section of Amnesty International UK was able to build its own headquarters thanks to a large donation. “The Human Rights Action Center“, which opened in Shoreditch, East London in 2007, forms the vivid core of the work, is an information centre for visitors, and offers catering and conference space.

In Switzerland, Greenpeace decided in 2014, regardless of large donations, to work more effectively as part of the Kalkbreite Cooperative to be able to handle the donations more efficiently in the long view. Their new office space for 45 employees is particularly energy-efficient, low on rent and compact, according to Greenpeace CH.

NGOs are of different scope, scale, and structure – from international member associations to local foundations and small charities. They represent a multitude of interests, sectors and activities. Neue Stadtentwicklung in London Urban development in London Seit der Jahrtausendwende kam es in London in vielen Bereichen zu intensiver Bautätigkeit. Diverse ehemalige Brach-, Gleis- oder Industrieflächen wurden zu häufig sehr exklusiven Stadtvierteln. Wichtige Beispiele sind hierbei Canary Wharf als neues Zentrum des Bankwesens, Kings Cross mit Eurostar-Terminal als hippes Tech Hub und Battersea Power Station als Retail und Wohnviertel.

Auch im Zentrum selbst kam es zu starkem, besonders vertikalem Wachstum. Seit der Jahrtausendwende kam es zum Bau von über 60 Hochhäusern mit mehr als 100m. Die Skyline, einst nur von der St. Pauls Kathedrale geprägt wächst und verändert sich konstant. Es entstehen mittlerweile subzentrale Hochhauszentren, beispielsweise in Vauxhall oder Islington.

Aufgrund der hohen Immobilienpreise gerät der öffentliche Raum immer mehr in den Hintergrund, wird privater Vorplatz für Büro, Kommerz und Luxus. Speziell während der Corona Pandemie ist aufgefallen, wo es die Menschen in London hinzieht, wo sie verweilen:

Since the turn of the millennium there has been a huge increase of construction work around London. Various undeveloped railway or industrial areas often later become exclusive city quarters. Important examples include: Canary Wharf which is now the new banking district, Kings Cross with the Eurostar Terminal now known as the hip, tech hub and Battersea Power Station as a retail and residential area.

In addition to this, there has also been a strong, vertical growth in the City as well. In the last two decades more than 60 buildings with more than 100m were build.

The skyline, which once only consited of St. Pauls Cathedral has now rapidly gown and is constantly changing.

Sub-central high-rise conglomerates are now emerging such as within Vauxhall and Islington.

Due to the high real estate prices, central public spaces are increasingly taking a back seat, becoming a private forecourt for offices, commerce and luxury. During the Covidpandemic in particular, it became apparent where people in London are drawn to and where they prefer to stay:

London ist für vieles weltberühmt, doch speziell die Parks, landschaftlichen Anlagen und Kanäle erhöhen die Lebensqualität der Stadt. Dieses Erbe aus dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert erfährt durch den marktgetriebenen Druck heutzutage kaum noch Ergänzungen. Der neu gebaute öffentliche Raum ist häufig eintönig und lädt nur noch zu kommerziellem Aufenthalt ein.

London is renown for a variety of things, but especially it’s parks, landscaped areas and canals increase the quality of life in the city. This legacy from the early 19th century is hardly supplemented these days. The newly built public space is often monotonous and only invites to a commercially stay.

Shoreditch - Paradies für Hipster Shoreditch - Hipster‘s Paradise Shoreditch, am Londoner East End gelegen, war ein Ort der Arbeiterklasse, später des Zerfalls. Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre begann der Aufstieg, die Gegend wurde angesagt und hip. Heutzutage besonders bekannt für die Künstler- und Barszene ist der Stadtteil von enormer Gentrifizerung betroffen. Viele Altbauten werden als Loft/Büroflächen ausgebaut und die Immobilienpreise steigen rapide.

Situated at the East End of London, Shoreditch once was a place for the working class, later of decay.

The rise began in the mid-1990s as the area started to become trendy and hip. Nowadays, Shoreditch is renowned for it’s artist and bar scene, the district is affected by enormous gentrification. Many old buildings are being converted into chic loft / office spaces and real estate prices are rising rapidly.

Durch die im südlichen Bereich gelegene Brick Lane wurde der Stadtteil darüber hinaus zum weltweiten Touristenmagnet: der berühmte Sonntagsmarkt, eine Vielzahl an Secondhand Länden und die mit Graffitti bunt gestalteten Mauern locken wöchtenlich viele zehntausende Besucher an.

Trotz der anhaltenden Überentwicklung des Stadtteils ist er immernoch sehr multikulturell. In Teilen findet sich die höchste Dichte an muslimischer Bevölkerung des Landes (36% / 3% UK), Einflüsse der verschiedensten Kulturen ist selbst noch über Jahrhunderte erhalten.

Die öffentliche Nahverkehrsanbindung ist seit 2010 durch die Öffnung der Overground Linie stark verbessert worden (Shoreditch High Street Station, jährlich 10Mio Passagiere). Durch die Nähe zur Liverpool Street Station, einem der meistfrequentieren Bahnhöfe Londons (jährlich ca. 80Mio Passagiere) ist das Viertel auch sehr schnell von außerhalb Londons zu erreichen.

Bishopsgate Goodsyard - Geschichte Bishopsgate Goodsyard - History Seit über einem halben Jahrhundert liegt die Fläche des einstigen Güterbahnhofs in Ostlondon brach.

Erbaut in die umgebende Stadtstruktur eröffnete der Bahnhof erstmals 1840 zur Personenbeförderung. Nach einer Umnutzung war der Bahnhof ab 1880 für viele Jahre einer der zentralen Punkte der Warenströme der Hauptstadt.

Größtenteils verschont durch die deutsche Bombardements während des zweiten Weltkriegs kam es nach einem verheerenden Brand 1964 zur Aufgabe des Güterverkehrs. Seither kam es zu verschiedensten Zwischennutzungen, von Parkflächen zu Märkten und Veranstaltungen. Die Großform des ehemaligen Bahnhofs blieb während dieser Zeit komplett erhalten.

Erst ab Anfang des neuen Jahrtausend wurde es wieder lauter um die Fläche. 2002 kam es zum Verkauf des Grundstücks von Railtrack an Hammerson&Ballymore, 2003 zum Teilabriss und Bau der Overground Station im nördlichen Teil und ab 2005 zur Ausarbeitung verschiedenster Masterplankonzepte.

2014 wurden die Pläne in den verantwortlichen Councils Tower Hamlets und Hackney eingebracht und aufgrund der massiven Dichte und großen Gebäudehöhen abgelehnt. 2015 machte der damalige Bürgermeister Londons Boris Johnson von seinem Recht gebrauch, das Rathaus als Entscheidungsinstanz einzusetzen. So wurden die Pläne 2016 erneut abgelehnt und zur Überarbeitung empfohlen.

The former area of the Goodsyard in East London has been derelict for over half a century. Built into the surrounding urban structure, the station first opened for transportation in 1840. After being repurposed in use, the station was one of the key points for the flow of goods in the capital from 1880 onwards.

Mostly spared by the destructive effects of german bombings during the Second World War, freight traffic was abandoned after a devastating fire in 1964. Since then there have been various interim uses, from parking spaces to markets and events. The large shape of the former train station was completely preserved during this time.

The beginning of the new millennium also posed a rise of interest in the area. In 2002 the property was sold by Railtrack to Hammerson & Ballymore, followed by a partial demolition of the northern part in 2003 and the beginning of the construction for an Overground Railway Line including a station. From 2005 onwards the development of a future masterplan began.

In 2014 those plans were introduced and rejected by the councils Tower Hamlets and Hackney because of the massive density and height of the buildings. In 2015, former Mayor of London, now Prime Minister, Boris Johnson exercised his right to use the City Hall as a decision-making body. The plans were rejected again in 2016 and required revision.

Im Oktober 2019 kam es zu einer weiteren Planeingabe, die öffentliche Anhörung im März 2020 aufgrund von Covid-19 abgesagt.

Bis heute, im September 2020, 18 Jahre nach Erwerb des Grundstücks ist nichts passiert.

Despite the central location of the Hackney and Tower Hamlets districts, over 40% of the population live below the poverty line. In strong contrast to this, the rich Borough „City of London“ is growing in all directions and creeping its way into the surrounding boroughs.

Another plan was submitted in October 2019. A sheduled public hearing in March 2020 was canceled due to Covid-19.

Trotz der so zentralen Lage der Stadtteile Hackney und Tower Hamlets leben über 40% der Einwohner unterhalb der Armutsgrenze. Die im krassen Gegensatz dazu stehende reiche City of London wächst nach allen Seiten und frisst sich in die umgebenden Boroughs.

An active citizens‘ initiative, the interests of the two adjacent boroughs are opposed to the efforts of investors to make maximum use of the property. Opinions and Ideas of 2,500 residents and the repeated revision of the plans still didn’t lead to any form of solution. Many critics still consider the concept to be too exclusive and not socially acceptable in the surrounding urban fabric.

Today, in September 2020, 18 years after the property was acquired, a conclusion has still not been found.

Ein aktives Bürgerbegehren und die Interessen der zwei anliegenden Stadtteile stehen dem Streben der Investoren nach maximaler Ausnutzung des Grundstücks entgegen. Der Dialog mit über 2 500 Anwohnern und die mehrmalige Überarbeitung der Pläne führte bis heute nicht zu einer Lösung. Viele Kritiker halten das Konzept immernoch für zu exklusiv und wenig sozialverträglich im umgebenden Stadtgefüge.

Austausch Exchange Der Mensch tauscht – alles. Er tauscht weil er muss, weil seine Bedürfnisse es erzwingen oder weil er vom Austausch profitiert. Er tauscht Waren gegen Waren, Leistungen gegen Geld, Unterhaltung gegen Applaus, Hilfe gegen eine Spende... und der Mensch tauscht, weil er gerne tauscht, weil ihn immer wieder das Neue reizt.

Humans exchange – everything. We exchange because we have to, because our needs force it or because we benefit from the exchange. We exchange goods for goods, services for money, entertainment for applause, help for a donation ... and people trade, because they like to trade.

Because they are always attracted to new things.

Und der Mensch baut. Er baut Hütten und Häuser, Tempel, Kirchen und Paläste und bereits seit dem 7. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Gebäude für ganz besondere Aufgaben.

Der zwischenmenschliche Austausch von Neuigkeiten, Gerüchten oder Tratsch ist lange vor dem »Informationszeittalter« eine der stärksten Beweggründe für die Begegnung von Menschen untereinander. Jahrhundertelang dienten Jahrmärkte und Volksfeste dazu, sich nicht nur mit Waren, sondern mit »dem Neuesten« zu versorgen.

Heute verfügen wir über viele unterschiedliche Kommunikationsmittel, die den persönlichen Kontakt nahezu überflüssig machen. Ganz besonders in der speziellen Situation des Corona-Jahres 2020 begegnen sich Menschen hauptsächlich online und digital. Und genau in einer solchen, global einheitlichen, Situation wird uns bewusst, wie wir den Austausch mit anderen vermissen.

Das Gespräch unter vier, vierzig oder viel mehr Augen, das gemeinsame Erleben, den Händedruck oder die Umarmung zur Begrüßung und zum Abschied.

The interpersonal exchange of news, rumors or gossip is one of the strongest motivations for people to meet one another long before the era of the internet enabling instant information. For centuries cultural events such as fairs and markets served not only to supply ourselves with goods but also with news.

Today we have countless different means of communication that make personal contact almost unnecessary.

A key example can be seen with the recent impacts of Covid-19 in 2020, where digital interaction was forced into action. Globally, this allowed us to reflect and become more aware how social exchange is vital and missed, from a conversation, a gesture, a shared experience or something as simple as handshake or hug.

Oder sie nennen es Forum, wie in Davos. Was für Politik und Wirtschaft ein lohnenswertes Ziel ist, wird für viele andere zum Symbol für eine Welt, die ihre Probleme nicht mehr in den Griff bekommt, oder gar neue Probleme schafft. In ökologischer Hinsicht, in Fragen der Menschenrechte oder beim Tierschutz.

Für all diese Fragen gibt es eine Fülle von nichtstaatlichen Organisationen, die sich meist mit einem isolierten Themenkomplex beschäftigen und sich dabei bewusst sind, dass die Ursachen vieler Probleme miteinander zusammenhängen.

Das WORLD NGO FORUM will ein Ort sein, an dem ein maximaler direkter Austausch zwischen diese Organisationen stattfindet, um die dringenden Aufgaben bessser bearbeiten zu können.

Die Mächtigen und Wichtigen der Welt machen es nicht anders, sie nennen es Gipfel: In Brüssel, Genf oder New York City. Politiker wissen, dass ohne persönliche Treffen Politik nicht möglich ist. Politik mit anderen und Politik gegen andere.

The worldwideweb, social media, video platforms and conference calls can do a lot, but they cannot replace personal encounters. Internet forums serve people, help and entertain - and in the end often leave a gap: Social experiences. So personal meetings happen, to getting to know each other, to exchange ideas.

Or they are calling it a ‘Forum’, as in Davos. What is very beneficial for politics and business becomes for many others a symbol of unequality, of a world overwhelmed by ignorance and greed. This so from an ecological perspective, from questions of human rights or animal welfare.

There is a multitude of non-governmental organizations for all of these concerns, most of which deal with an isolated set of issues and are aware that the causes of many problems are interrelated.

The WORLD NGO FORUM wants to be a place where a maximum direct exchange takes place between these organizations in order to be able to process the urgent tasks more efficiently, create solutions and positive results in order to make this world the best it can be.

Konzept Concept Absicht und Kernaussage meines Entwurfs ist eine Stadtarchitektur des Austauschs und des Kontakts zwischen Menschen – beruflich, privat und kulturell.

Das WORLD NGO FORUM soll den Mitarbeitenden internationaler Hilfswerke Platz bieten, in enger Abstimmung die dringlichen Herausforderungen unseres Planeten gemeinsam zu meistern.

The intention and core message of my design is of an urban architecture of exchange and contact between people – professionally, privately and culturally.

The WORLD NGO FORUM aims to provide employees of international aid organizations with spaces, to master together in close coordination the pressing challenges facing our planet.

Zu Fuß nur etwa fünf Minuten von der Liverpool Street Station bildet das Gatehouse 1 das Portal des gesamten Gebiets nach Westen zur hoch frequentierten Shoreditch High Street. Der C-förmige Baukörper öffnet sich zur Straße hin, der Besucher taucht unter der Statue der Oriel und den Bögen des alten Bahnhofs hindurch in die ehemalige Eingangshalle.

Der grüne Innenhof ist von drei Seiten mit fünfgeschossigen Baukörpern flankiert, die eine hohe Zahl an öffentlichen und halböffentlichen Funktionen aufnehmen. In der Sockelzone, den alten Backsteinbögen, findet sich ein Museum bespielt von den NGOs des Gebiets. Just a five-minute walk from London Liverpool Street Station, Gatehouse 1 forms the western portal of the area towards the highly frequented Shoreditch High Street.

The C-shaped building block opens onto the street enabling visitors to walk under the statue of Oriel into arches of the old train station to arrive into the former entrance hall.

The green inner courtyard is flanked on three sides by five-story buildings that accommodate a large number of public and semi-public functions. On ground floor level will be a museum, made available to the NGOs, situated within the old brick arches. Due to an open floor plan with central cores, the buildings G1 East and G1 South a large number of co-working spaces that can be flexibly rented.

The globe is the central venue of the area. The spherical structure with shifted floor plates hosts the two most important functions: The station of the Overground and the conference centre. Passagieren jährlich ist die Shoreditch High Street Station das wichtigste öffentliche Gebäude des WNF. Durch die Verglasung der Tunnelwand hin zum Atrium des Globe ergibt sich für die Passanten ein direkter Einblick in das Geschehen, sie macht neugierig und lädt zum Erkunden ein.

Counting more than 12 million journeys a year, Shoreditch High Street Station is the most important public building of the WNF. By opening up the walls of the tunnel towards the atrium of the Globe, a direct visual connection to the inside is created.

Gatehouses2 and 3 are located along one of the main axes, Wheeler Street. Similar to their other counterparts, both play an important role as entrance buildings and in the vertical distribution.

Gatehouse2, am Vorplatz der Overground Station ist ein fünfgeschossiger Baukörper. Als Hauptfunktion ist ein Hochschulstandort mit Hörsälen und Arbeitsplätzen der University of East London (Studiengang NGO und Entwicklungshilfemanagement) angedacht.

Gatehouse2, situated on the forecourt of the Overground Station, is a five-story structure. A faculty branch of the University of East London (NGO and Development Management) with lecture halls and workplaces is planned and the dedicated main function.

Gatehouse3 ist auf den Fundamenten des ehemaligen Boiler House erbaut. Die Lage entlang des Great Eastern Parks macht es attraktiv für Gastronomie im Erdgeschoss. Auf Plattformniveau ist das Backsteingebäude der südliche Abschluss eines kleinen Platzes.

Gatehouse3 is built on the foundations of the former Boiler House. Its location along the Great Eastern Promenade is attractive for public use in the groundfloor. At platform level, the brick building is the southern end of a small square.

Based on the concept of the Idea-Stores by London Borough of Tower Hamlets, which was given architectural significance by David Adjaye, Gatehouse4 is the social meeting point for the surrounding Shoreditch district.

Der Block am östlichen Rand des Gebiets, entlang der Brick Lane gelegen, verbindet die unterschiedlichsten Funktionen: Die Erdgeschosszone unter Güterbahnhof und Overground verknüpfen den Markt mit dem neuen Gebiet des WNF, der Baukörper im Süden ist eine soziale Herberge mit 150 Betten, der im Westen liegende eine offene Bibliothek.

The building block on the eastern edge of the area along Brick Lane, unites a variety of functions such as: The ground floor zone under the old Goodsyard and Overground Bridge connects the famous Brick Lane Market with the new WNF area, the building in the South is a social hostel with 150 beds and within the west an open library is situated.

Der Innenhof ist im Gegensatz zu G1 beschützter und intimer, was dem Programm der Gebäudegruppe mehr entspricht. Über eine breite Treppe gelangt man von der King Street im Erdgeschoss auf Plattform - Niveau, durch eine weitere auf Ebene 3, dem Overground Park.

Die Betonwand der Bahnbrücke wird zur Leinwand für Künstler der Umgebung und lebendigem, sich stetig veränderndem Element des Hofs. Alle Ebenen können auch von den Allen Gardens, dem Park im Osten über eine Rampenanlage begangen werden.

In contrast to G1, the inner courtyard is more protected, creating an intimate space, which matches up better with the program of the building group. A wide stairway leads from King Street on the Ground Floor to the Platform Level1 an even further onto Level 3, the Overground Park.

The concrete wall of the railway bridge becomes a canvas for artists of the adjacent area and a vivid and constantly changing facade of the courtyard. All levels can be accessed from Allen Gardens, the park in the east, via a ramp system.

Optisch heben sich die Baukörper wenig vom Backstein des Bahnhof - Sockels ab und verstärken so den Ortsbezug des G4 nochmals.

Visually, the structures hardly stand out from the brick of the Goodsyard plinth which therefore reinforces the Gatehouses local attachment.

The NGO - Village is the vivid structure that connects the entire site. The modular architecture stretched across a network of small squares, alleys, platforms and terraces, work and living spaces for NGOs, as well as additional spaces for the community and restaurants.

As a living, working and experience space, all units are structured according to a consistent pattern and offer the user maximum freedom for independent design. A 2m wide block consisting of a bathroom, kitchen and staircase is the only fixed element in each module.

Based on the most original english building type, the terraced house, a broad field of various configuration / surface sizes are possible: From 36m2 to 200m2, which again enables the users to have biggest possible freedom.

In order to achieve a maximum of exchange and contact, all units are accessed directly from a public space via platforms or stairs.

Even with the same basic form, very different situations arise such as: Locations with public functions and a high number of pedestrians, such as Eagle Square or Phoenix Street or on the opposite other places such as the Phoenix Mews or the Overground Terrace, which are much more private.

So ergeben sich auch bei gleichbleibender Grundform sehr unterschiedliche Situationen. Plätze mit öffentlichen Nutzungen und hohem Passantenaufkommen wie der Eagle Square oder die Phoenix Street stehen Abschnitten wie der Phoenix Mews oder der Overground Terrace, die deutlich privater ausgeprägt sind, entgegen.

NGO-Dorf NGO-Village Overground Terrace: Angestellt an die Brückenstruktur liegen die Wohnund Arbeitsräume der Overground Terrace. Über einen überbreiten Laubengang mit eingerückten Stützen werden die doppelgeschossigen, einseitig belichteten Einheiten erschlossen.

Durch das Einrücken der Eingänge wird in Verbindung mit der Außenfläche auf dem Gang eine private Fläche geschaffen, die durch den Nutzer angeeignet werden kann. Jede Treppenanlage verfügt zudem über ein gemeinschaftlich nutzbaren, überdachten Platz als Treff- und Aufenthaltsort.

Overground Terrace: The living and working rooms of the Overground Terrace are adjacent to the bridge structure of the train infrastructure. The two-story, one-sided exposed units are entered via a wide corridor with recessed structure.

By indenting the entrances of each mirrored unit in addition to the wide corridor space, a private area for individual use is being created. Additionally, each staircase has a shared, covered space, which can be used as an area to meet the community.

NGO-Dorf NGO-Village Phoenix Street: Die 6 m breite Hauptachse auf Plattformniveau verknüpft die kleinen Plätze und ist Ausgangspunkt der vertikalen Erschließung durch Treppen, Aufzüge und Rampen. Phoenix Mews: Nördlich der Phoenix Street liegt der deutlich ruhigere und privatere Bereich des Phoenix Mews. Die Gassenbreite wird durch Einschieben von externer Treppenerschließung und Sitzpodesten auf 4.2m verringert.

Durch diese Elemente werden die Fassaden dreidimensionaler und zu einem Raum des Austauschs.

Phoenix Mews: North of Phoenix Street is the much quieter and more private area of Phoenix Mews. The aisle width is reduced to 4.5m by inserting external staircases and seating platforms. These elements make the facades more three-dimensional and create a space for exchange and conversation.

Der Entwurf in Shoreditch erhält die grüne Insel des Goodsyard. Ist Erlebnisraum, ohne Trennung von Funktionen, ohne strikte Grenze zwischen öffentlich und privat. Bietet Platz für alle zur persönlichen Aneignung.

Das World NGO Forum ist offen für jeden, ohne Öffnungszeiten.

Due to the events of this year, we all have more than ever understood, that City must be a human space.

The design preserves the green island of the Goodsyard.

It is a space of experience, without separation of functions, without strict boundary between public and private. It provides spaces for everyone for personal appropriation.

The World NGO Forum is open to all of us, without opening hours.
