Educating our youth for a rapidly changing future is not a simple task and cannot be achieved through traditional educational approaches alone. So how do we best prepare our children? By arming them with the skills to reason, to problem-solve, to collaborate, and to create. Because in order to navigate the future they will need the skills to invent the future. At Tilton School we have responded to this need and we have evolved so that we are not just educating about the past, we are educating for the future.

When learning is integrated and multi-dimensional, it truly prepares students for real life by intrinsically motivating them to learn, achieve, and create. When students are provided with rich academic content and are encouraged to interact with it—and each other—learning goes beyond the constructs of “schoolwork” and it becomes personal and meaningful. A personalized experience awakens an excitement in students for the material they are studying, resulting in a desire to dig deeper into areas of significant interest and passion. For Tilton students, this is when learning evolves from knowledge to wisdom.

Because so many of my classes are discussion-based, I’ve learned the importance of understanding the value of our individual perspectives. I now evaluate my thoughts through contrasting viewpoints on a daily basis. I have come to understand that having the ability to see through different lenses is a valuable skill.

For me, this has been really important in discovering who I am, both as a learner and as a member of a community.

The greatest advantage of curiosity lies in its power to motivate learning in areas that are meaningful to a student. We encourage our students to seek their own questions because it naturally provides a focus on learning how to learn and promotes critical thinking. We understand that having the courage and drive to ask “why?” is essential for developing the knowledge, skills, relationships, and experiences needed to live full and productive lives.

BLAINE /// ON GETTING REAL I’ve never been one to hesitate about asking “why?” which has made Tilton the perfect school for me. When I find yself wanting to know more about what I am studying, I feel completely comfortable asking questions. This is because it seems like everyone in my class wants to know more too. What’s best is that our teachers are so willing to break from what they are teaching in order to explore what I have asked.

This trip gave me an opportunity to grow, to help, to meet people, and to take on a leadership role in a community that needed assistance. It was an opportunity to discover things about myself that I may not have otherwise known. It reminded me that I need to appreciate the smaller things in life and to take more time out of my day to help people. It gave me guidance that I did not know I needed around the value of contributing to the community. As a result, this understanding has encouraged me to brainstorm careers for myself that involve some form of medicine as well as the aspect of helping others.
