When learning is integrated and multi-dimensional, it truly prepares students for real life by intrinsically motivating them to learn, achieve, and create. When students are provided with rich academic content and are encouraged to interact with it—and each other—learning goes beyond the constructs of “schoolwork” and it becomes personal and meaningful. A personalized experience awakens an excitement in students for the material they are studying, resulting in a desire to dig deeper into areas of significant interest and passion. Because so many of my classes are discussion-based, I’ve learned the importance of understanding the value of our individual perspectives. I now evaluate my thoughts through contrasting viewpoints on a daily basis. I have come to understand that having the ability to see through different lenses is a valuable skill. For me, this has been really important in discovering who I am, both as a learner and as a member of a community.

This trip gave me an opportunity to grow, to help, to meet people, and to take on a leadership role in a community that needed assistance. It was an opportunity to discover things about myself that I may not have otherwise known. It reminded me that I need to appreciate the smaller things in life and to take more time out of my day to help people. It gave me guidance that I did not know I needed around the value of contributing to the community. As a result, this understanding has encouraged me to brainstorm careers for myself that involve some form of medicine as well as the aspect of helping others.
