A Center of Distinction
History Charles E. Tilton is a central figure to both Tilton School and the town of Tilton. His contributions as a banker, philanthropist, and forward-thinker brought roadways, railroads, and development that created The backbone of the region. Perched on a hill perfectly overlooking the town below, his home — now known as the Charles E. Tilton Mansion — was built in 1861 and is still one of the most significant historical buildings in the state of New Hampshire. Its Gothic Revival architecture makes the Mansion both a stunning highlight to the campus and a living museum that is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. It remained in the Tilton family until 1952 and was later purchased by the School in 1962. Over the years, the home has served as a library, campus housing, event center, and more. Now, it is set to be a focal point of a new chapter in the School’s history. “In reimagining this space and what is possible here, we’re building something that truly celebrates our community and our purpose,” says Head of School Kate Saunders P’17, ’21. “Similar to how Charles. E. Tilton helped bridge Tilton to the surrounding areas by bringing in railroads and building up town roadways, we want to build connections that establish the School as a center of distinction for community partnerships. Our location is an asset with immense untapped potential, and the Mansion project is a vital part of how we will transform what’s possible in independent school education.”

Naming Opportunities Naming opportunities are available as Tilton’s way to recognize and thank donors for one-time or multi-year leadership to the Mansion renovation project and/or leadership giving to the Tilton Fund. Donors who pledge $25,000 or more to the Mansion renovation campaign will also be recognized on a Campaign Leadership Donor Plaque in the main entry area. Renovations are still underway, so these naming opportunities are subject to change and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Other naming opportunities across the Tilton campus also remain available. Naming opportunities are a powerful way to leave your legacy at Tilton or honor a family member or faculty/staff member who transformed your experience on the Hill. Art Gallery & Instruction Space
Artist-in-Residence Program
Tilton is investing in the Arts and this new space will allow our students to flourish in their practice and develop meaningful connections to our local artistic community. Utilizing the two levels of the former “Back Stacks” area, the renovated first floor will allow us to expand instructional space and offer additional programming for our students, while the second floor will feature a brand new gallery space. Designed to accommodate both oncampus and visiting artist exhibits and paired with our new Artist-in-Residence program, the gallery will elevate our offerings and increase Tilton’s visibility in the New Hampshire arts ecosystem.
The new Remy Steevensz Artist-in-Residence Program welcomes musicians, studio artists, technical designers, and theatrical directors to work with the faculty and students of Tilton. From a one-day featured event to a seasonal commitment, artists can scale their engagement to match their interests and availability. Housed in the Mansion and embedded in school life, the Artist-inResidence Program will be a boost to the school and visiting artists alike. Tilton’s team of faculty and students will gain new knowledge and ideas while the artist-inresidence gets special access to Tilton’s program and spaces, as well as the ability to showcase their expertise.
Catering Kitchen & Event Space

A hidden gem no longer! Boasting a stunning event space and a newly completed catering kitchen, the Mansion will host a variety of events for the campus community as well as the surrounding area. The restorations and new features both inside and out — combined with Tilton’s incredible location just 20 minutes from Concord and the heart of the Lakes Region — help position the School as a destination for weddings, conferences, seasonal celebrations, and more, establishing relationships and distinction with new organizations around the state.
Completed during the first year of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency and named after a central figure in the California gold rush of the mid-1800s, the Mansion has deep roots in our country’s history. Accordingly, a new classroom space in the former aviary wing of the home is set to become the new headquarters for Tilton’s AP United States History course. The new learning space is highlighted by incredible floor-to-ceiling windows and a welcoming environment that will cultivate interactive teaching and learning.
