Construction set to recover from 2021 Edilizia in ripresa dal 2021 Compared to the 2.7% growth in total building output recorded in 2019, the European construction industry will inevitably experience a sharp decline in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The latest August forecasts from Euroconstruct put the contraction at 9% (compared to the more pessimistic figure of -11.5% published in June), with a loss of production over the three-year period 2020-2022 that could be as much as 350 billion euros below 2019 levels.

The new crisis further aggravates what was already a very difficult situation for many European countries following several years of stagnation in the construction industry. Nonetheless, several European countries are expected to see a gradual recovery as early as 2021 and a further return to normal in 2022.

The UK will be the worst hit country, with Sweden and Finland also experiencing a negative 2020, while the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Portugal and Slovakia may see a slower recovery. France and Italy on the other hand have revised up their forecasts for the current year.

In Italy, where the first steps in the recovery process are already underway with the reopening of construction sites and building merchants after the pandemic, the construction market is cautiously optimistic and is expecting to see a more significant upturn in 2021. A major driver of this recovery is the boosting of public incentives for the building industry aimed at making buildings more energy efficient and earthquake proof (the so-called 110% Superbonus tax concessions included in the Relaunch Decree which has already been signed into law). This is a unique opportunity to revive the economy of the entire construction industry, including the brick and ceramic sectors, while at the same time giving homeowners the chance to renovate their homes for minimal expenditure.

The Italian brick and roof tile manufacturers are well aware of the need for the industry to adapt to the changes brought about by the health emergency. To bring capacity and supply in line with real market demand, they will need to continue the process of rationalising production plants while at the same time pursuing product innovation in anticipation of future trends and adopting multi-performance systems that meet high quality standards.

Se nel 2019 l’industria europea delle costruzioni aveva registrato un incremento del 2,7% della produzione edilizia totale, il 2020 si chiuderà inevitabilmente con una brusca flessione determinata dalla crisi derivante dalla pandemia di coronavirus. Le ultime rilevazioni di agosto realizzate da Euroconstruct stimano la contrazione al 9% (in giugno era stato indicato un più pessimistico -11,5%), con una perdita di produzione in valore che per il triennio 2020-2022 potrebbe arrivare a circa 350 miliardi di euro in meno rispetto ai livelli 2019.

La nuova crisi si aggiunge e aggrava una situazione che per molti paesi europei era già complessa, con un’edilizia stagnante da diversi anni. Tuttavia, per molte nazioni europee è prevista una lenta ripresa già dal 2021 e una ulteriore normalizzazione nel 2022.

Le maggiori ripercussioni dalla pandemia si registreranno nel Regno Unito, negativo il 2020 anche per Svezia e Finlandia, mentre una ripresa più lenta potrebbe verificarsi in Olanda, Spagna, Polonia, Belgio, Portogallo e Slovacchia. Francia e Italia hanno invece rivisto al rialzo le previsioni per quest’anno. In Italia, già nella fase di ripartenza dalla pandemia, con il riavvio dei cantieri e delle ri-

vendite edili, si è potuto registrare un cauto ottimismo del mercato delle costruzioni, che potrà beneficiare di una ripresa più significativa nel 2021. Una grande leva in tal senso viene dal potenziamento degli incentivi pubblici per l’edilizia (il Superbonus del 110% inserito nel Decreto Rilancio già convertito in Legge), finalizzati all’efficientamento energetico e antisismico degli edifici. Un’occasione unica per l’economia dell’intera filiera legata alle costruzioni – tra cui i comparti del laterizio e della ceramica – nonché per i cittadini che potranno riqualificare casa con il minimo impegno finanziario.

Per i produttori italiani di mattoni e tegole in laterizio vi è anche la consapevolezza che il settore dovrà trasformarsi proprio alla luce dei cambiamenti indotti dall’emergenza sanitaria. Per allineare la capacità e l’offerta alla reale domanda del mercato occorrerà proseguire, da un lato, nel percorso di razionalizzazione degli impianti produttivi e, dall’altro, nell’innovazione di prodotto, capace di anticipare i trend del futuro, con sistemi multi-prestazionali caratterizzati da alti standard qualitativi. Efficienza energetica, sostenibilità ambientale, comfort abitativo, sicurezza e salubrità saranno le parole chiave dell’edilizia del futuro.

Tecnargilla postponed to 2021 Tecnargilla, the world’s most important exhibition of supplies to the surface coverings industry, has been postponed until 2021.

The decision was taken by Acimac (Italian Ceramic Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers’ Association) and IEG (Italian Exhibition Group) with the aim of ensuring that the event can be held in the best possible conditions.

Tecnargilla is the benchmark exhibition for companies from all over the world and has a more than 50% share of foreign visitors from over 100 countries, particularly from outside Europe. Although the current restrictions are expected to be eased over the coming months, the difficulties facing international travel have prompted the organisers to postpone the event (Tecnargilla was originally to be held from 28 September to 2 October 2020 in the Rimini Exhibition Centre).

Tecnargilla will therefore be held in the autumn of 2021, after which it will resume its biennial frequency without skipping an edition. This will enable the ex-

hibition to maintain its key role as a showcase of innovation and a meeting point for the ceramic and other surface coverings sectors and to reaffirm the unique international status of Italian technologies.

The event always showcases the finest aesthetic and process innovation for the ceramic and brick industries and will continue to reflect the highest levels of excellence in the field of Italian capital goods for the production of all types of surface coverings.

“The decision was taken after a great deal of thought and with a strong sense of responsibility,” says Acimac Chairman Paolo Mongardi. “Tecnargilla is the only world-leading exhibition in the industrial machinery sector capable of attracting not just the suppliers of technology for the surface coverings industry but above all large numbers of customers from all over the world. In this challenging year, we do not believe that the conditions are in place to guarantee the same level of international visitor attendance in terms of either numbers or quality.”

“As always, we listened with great interest to the opinion of

Acimac and the exhibitors,” adds IEG Chairman Lorenzo Cagnoni, “and considering that the conditions were not in place to hold the show in 2020, we agreed to reschedule the event directly in 2021. We’ve decided to begin preparing immediately for next year so as to fulfil the potential of an edition of the show that once again will reflect the strength of a highly prestigious market for our country.”

“Our offices are already hard at work to develop further innovations that will allow us to enhance the international prestige of Tecnargilla and offer new business opportunities for exhibitors and visitors,” concludes Acimac director Mario Maggiani.

Tecnargilla è il punto di riferimento fieristico per le aziende di tutto il mondo, con una percentuale di visitatori stranieri superiore al 50%, provenienti da oltre 100 paesi, extra-europei in particolare, e l’attuale difficoltà negli spostamenti internazionali, seppur prevista in miglioramento per i prossimi mesi, ha indotto gli organizzatori a una sua riprogrammazione (Tecnargilla si sarebbe dovuta svolgere dal 28 settembre al 2 ottobre 2020 presso il quartiere espositivo di Rimini).

Tecnargilla tornerà dunque nell’autunno 2021, cambiando dal prossimo anno la sua cadenza biennale senza perdere alcuna edizione, per confermare il suo ruolo di vetri-

Last August saw the official conclusion of the operation formalising the change of name and transformation of the Vicenza-based company into a joint stock company (S.p.A.), now called Marcheluzzo S.p.A. This natural growth step became more essential than ever following the acquisition of Marcheluzzo Impianti in late 2019. Mladost, a leading Serbian clay brick manufacturer based in Vlasotince, approached Marcheluzzo S.p.A. with a request to reduce the energy consumption of the dryer installed about 30 years ago. The Vicenza-based company took up the challenge by supplying an innovative MT80evo internal chamber ventilation cone, which was designed and developed by the R&D department and is already in operation at the customer’s facility.

Brick producers are well aware of the importance of powerful and uniform internal ventilation during the drying phase for the purposes of drying time, product quality and waste percentage.

Nonuniform ventilation in either longitudinal or transversal directions results in uneven shrinkage of the material in the dryer. Parts exposed to a higher air flow or excessively high air velocities will tend to contract more rapidly than those that are shaded, potentially resulting in brick breakage.

Thanks to the different aerodynamic solutions, the MT80evo

ensures that air is distributed at a constant speed over all the material being dried, while its special geometry means it can be installed close to the roof of the dryer. This makes it possible to fully exploit the internal working height of the dryer chamber, which must be at least 21 cm from the top of the dryer in order to avoid severe losses that would reduce aerodynamic efficiency and result in nonuniform air currents.

Marcheluzzo devoted special attention to the quality and durability of the class H motors, which are oversized by 30% and are suitable for use in extreme humidity and temperature conditions. Maintenance work on the internal ventilation system has been reduced by 80% compared to traditional cones, while the main focus of the project was to reduce energy consumption.

The new generation MT80evo cones have an installed power of 2.2 kW and allow for a very quick return on the investment (normally one year).

The system is the ideal solution for converting all low air efficiency chamber dryers so as to achieve greater productivity, higher quality and significantly reduced consumption.

L’importanza di una ventilazione interna potente e uniforme, durante la fase di asciugatura, è nota e comprovata ai fini della durata dell’essiccazione, della qualità del prodotto e, non ultimo, della percentuale di scarti. Una ventilazione non omogenea (sia longitudinalmente che trasversalmente) porta a ritiri non corretti del materiale: le parti investite da un maggiore flusso d’aria, o da velocità troppo elevate, si contrarranno prima rispetto a quelle in ombra, con conseguente possibile rottura dei mattoni. Grazie alle diverse soluzioni aerodinamiche, l’MT80evo consente una distribuzione dell’aria a velocità costante su tutto il materiale da essiccare, mentre la speciale geometria ne per-

Grande importanza è stata data alla qualità e alla durata dei motori di classe H che, con un sovradimensionamento del 30%, possono essere utilizzati anche in condizioni di umidità e temperature estreme. Le operazioni di manutenzione del sistema di ventilazione interna sono state ridotte dell’80% rispetto ai coni tradizionali, mentre la riduzione del consumo di energia è stato l’aspetto strategico su cui si è concentrata buona parte dell’intervento. I coni di nuova generazione MT80evo hanno una potenza installata di 2,2 kw e consentono un ritorno dell’investimento molto rapido (normalmente un anno).

Il sistema si configura come la soluzione chiave per riconvertire tutti gli essiccatoi a camera caratterizzati da bassa efficienza dell’aria, così da ottenere maggiore produttività, qualità e consumi decisamente ridotti.

The model CF2 FC 4-exit die has been meticulously designed by the company’s technical team and is capable of withstanding the high level of wear typical of the extrusion process. For this purpose it has been equipped with cores and liners made of Tecnocarbide®, a special tungsten carbide with outstanding toughness and hardness characteristics (2000HV), in addition to a high thickness chrome plated core holder and intermediate plates made of wear-resistant material (Hardox).

Ibstock: new Walsall plant to be ready by 2022 Ibstock has announced plans to build a new production site in Walsall, West Midlands (UK) for an investment of 45 million.

A highly sustainable state-ofthe-art facility, it will replace the existing factory used to produce the Atlas range and is expected to have an output of 80 million bricks per year.

“This investment will expand further our capacity against a backdrop of a significant UK housing deficit and robust demand from the new build housing sector,” explained Joe Hudson (in the picture) , CEO of Ibstock. “We will initiate construction in 2020, with the factory expected to be commissioned in 2022.”

The new investment was announced as Ibstock posted its 2019 results showing a strong financial performance. Turnover was up 5% from £391 million in 2018 to £409 million, with £300 million generated by the Clay division. A significant contribution to the group’s growth was made by the Eclipse plant in Leicestershire, completed in 2018 with an annual production capacity of 100 million soft mud bricks.

European construction markets in the shadow of Covid-19 Le costruzioni in Europa colpite dal Covid-19

According to the latest forecasts presented at the 89th Euroconstruct Conference in Stockholm on 12 June 2020, the European construction market will see an abrupt downturn this year, but a slow recovery will begin as early as next year.

It is a well-known fact that European construction markets have experienced a lot of challenges, with stagnation trends in many countries. Not surprisingly, the ongoing crisis will have a huge negative impact on the markets in all the Euroconstruct countries this year. However, the national experts are predicting positive growth rates as early as in 2021 and normalisation in 2022.

But despite this expected upturn and normalisation, it is estimated that around €350 billion in total construction output will be lost between 2020 and 2022, compared to 2019 levels. According to the new Euroconstruct forecast, the number of unemployed within the Euroconstruct (EC-19) area will increase by 5 million people this year compared to 2019.

In 2019, the total construction output in the Euroconstruct (EC-19) area grew by 2.7% compared to 2018, reaching around €1,700 billion. New residential, non-residential and new civil engineering construction, the segment that has been driving the market for several years, increased by 3.9% last year, while renovations have been growing steadily at around 2% annually.

In the December 2019 forecasts, the market was anticipated to decrease its growth rate to around 1% annually over the two-year period 2020-2021 as a result of a weakening economy. With the outbreak of the pandemic, the forecast for 2020 has obviously been revised downwards by more than 12 percentage points, indicating a decline of 11.5% to about €1,500 billion (corresponding to the level of 2015). This drop in construction is similar in size to the contraction caused by the global financial crisis in 2009 and cancels out several years of growth.

All but a few countries included in EC-19 are seeing a decline in 2020, although the impact of the crisis varies from country to country. The biggest falls are expected in the UK and Ireland with around 33% and 38%, respectively. Finland and Switzerland are anticipating drops of 1-2%, whereas Portugal and Poland are expecting to see continued growth during the crisis.

However, total construction for EC-19 countries will see a rebound already next year of around 6% and then continue to grow by 3% in 2022, reaching an output level similar to that of 2018.

Secondo le nuove previsioni presentate all’89a Conferenza Euroconstruct a Stoccolma lo scorso 12 giugno, quest’anno l’industria europea delle costruzioni registrerà una brusca flessione, colpita duramente dalla crisi derivante dalla pandemia, ma già l’anno prossimo inizierà una lenta ripresa.

Come noto, molti paesi europei hanno affrontato difficoltà e stagnazione del settore edilizio già negli anni scorsi, non sorprende quindi l’enorme impatto negativo di questa nuova crisi su tutti i paesi Eurocostruct.

Tuttavia, gli analisti delle singole nazioni prevedono tassi di crescita positivi già nel 2021 e una normalizzazione nel 2022.

Nonostante tale recupero, si stima che tra il 2020 e il 2022 si perderanno circa 350 miliardi di euro di produzione totale delle costruzioni rispetto ai livelli del 2019.

Secondo le nuove previsioni Euroconstruct, nel 2020 il numero di disoccupati all’interno dei 19 paesi dell’area Eurocostruct (EC-19) aumenterà di 5 milioni di persone.

Nel 2019, la produzione edilizia totale nell’area Euroconstruct (EC-19) è cresciuta del 2,7% rispetto al 2018, raggiungendo circa € 1.700 miliardi di euro.

Le nuove costruzioni residenziali, non residenziali e di ingegneria civile - ossia il segmento che traina il mercato europeo da diversi anni - sono cre-

sciute del 3,9%, mentre i lavori di ristrutturazione registrano un incremento annuo costante intorno al 2%.

Nelle previsioni di dicembre 2019 ci si attendeva già un rallentamento del tasso di crescita del settore, previsto intorno all’1% annuo nel biennio 202021, dato l’indebolimento dell’economia europea.

Con lo scoppio della pandemia, le previsioni per il 2020 sono state ovviamente riviste al ribasso di oltre 12 punti percentuali, indicando un calo dell’11,5% a circa 1.500 miliardi di euro (pari al livello del 2015).

Questa contrazione, che annulla diversi anni di crescita, è di dimensioni paragonabili a quella causata dalla crisi finanziaria nel 2009.

Quasi tutti i paesi dell’area EC19 mostrano il segno meno nel 2020, sebbene l’impatto della crisi non sia omogeneo nelle diverse nazioni.

Le performance peggiori sono previste nel Regno Unito e in Irlanda con cali rispettivamente del 33 e del 38%.

Molto meglio in Finlandia e Svizzera che prevedono riduzioni dell’1-2%, mentre Portogallo e Polonia dovrebbero continuare a crescere anche durante la crisi.

Già dal prossimo anno, tuttavia, si prevede un rimbalzo intorno al 6%, a cui dovrebbe seguire un ulteriore progresso del 3% nel 2022 che riporterà il settore europeo delle costruzioni a livelli di produzione prossimi a quelli del 2018.

Among the big five European countries, only Germany will see a small decrease in total construction this year (an estimated -2.4%), while France, Italy, Spain and the UK are expecting declines of between 12% and 33%. All countries are expected to rebound in 2021 and 2022, but the magnitude of the growth will be smaller than the fall in 2020.

The uncertainty surrounding the development of the virus over the coming months means the forecasts may be revised down in the event of further lockdowns or the effects on the economy are worse than expected.

In general, all the various construction sectors will be affected by the crisis, but some more than others. In the Euroconstruct area, the sector that is least affected is civil engineering, which is expected to decrease by 7.2% this year and then to recover in 2021 and 2022 with growth of 7.4% and 3.5%, respectively.

Both residential and non-residential construction are expected to fall by slightly more than 12% in 2020 and then start to improve over the following two years with annual growth rates of between 3% and 6%.

AUGUST UPDATES: IMPROVEMENT IN 2020 FORECASTS The latest forecast for the Euroconstruct area reveals a slightly less pessimistic outlook than in June, indicating a 9% decline in 2020 instead of the previous 11.5%.

The UK remains the hardest hit country by the pandemic: excluding it from the calculations, the decline in real terms in 2020 would be 7%.

In most of the remaining countries, performances remain broadly in line with the June forecast, although there a few exceptions.

While Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and Norway are predicted to remain substantially stable, Finland and Sweden are expected to see a contraction in 2021.

Out of the largest countries, the most sluggish recovery is likely to be in the Netherlands, the UK and Spain.

Poland, Belgium, Portugal and Slovakia have revised down their growth rates for 2020 (Poland and Portugal were the most optimistic in the June forecast round).

Among France, Italy, the UK, Spain and Ireland, only Spain kept its forecasts unchanged while the other four countries revised their 2020 estimates upward.

In monetary terms, Belgium’s downward revision could equate to an output loss of 1.5 billion euros, whereas Ireland may gain 4 billion euros.

Tutti torneranno a crescere nel 2021 e 2022, ma in misura inferiore alla perdita del 2020.

L’incertezza legata all’evoluzione della pandemia nei prossimi mesi lascia spazio per eventuali revisioni al ribasso delle previsioni, nel caso fossero necessari nuovi lockdown o gli effetti sull’economia fossero peggiori di quanto atteso.

In generale, tutti i settori del comparto costruzioni saranno colpiti dalla crisi, ma alcuni più di altri.

Nell’area Euroconstruct, il settore meno colpito sarà quello dell’ingegneria civile, che dovrebbe perdere il 7,2% quest’anno e poi riprendersi nel 2021 e 2022 con una crescita rispettivamente del 7,4% e del 3,5%.

Sia l’edilizia residenziale che quella non residenziale dovrebbero contrarsi di poco più del 12% nel 2020 per poi iniziare a risalire nel prossimo biennio, con tassi di incremento annui tra il 3 e il 6%.

GLI AGGIORNAMENTI DI AGOSTO: PREVISIONI 2020 IN MIGLIORAMENTO Le ultime rilevazioni nell’area Euroconstruct offrono una visione un po’ più ottimistica rispetto al mese di giugno, indicando per il 2020 una flessione del 9% anziché dell’11,5% precedente.

Il Regno Unito si conferma il paese che riporterà le maggiori ripercussioni dalla pandemia: escludendolo dalle elaborazioni, il calo effettivo 2020 in termini reali scenderebbe infatti al 7%.

Nella maggior parte dei casi, le performance delle restanti aree rimangono più o meno in linea con le previsioni di giugno anche se vengono segnalate alcune eccezioni.

A fronte della sostanziale stabilità di Austria, Germania, Svizzera, Danimarca e Norvegia, Finlandia e Svezia prevedono un 2021 in contrazione.

Tra i paesi più strutturati la ripresa più lenta potrebbe verificarsi, oltre che nel Regno Unito, nei Paesi Bassi e in Spagna. Polonia, Belgio, Portogallo e Slovacchia hanno rivisto al ribasso il tasso di crescita per il 2020 (Polonia e Portogallo, erano stati i più ottimisti nel round di previsioni di giugno), mentre tra Francia, Italia, Regno Unito, Spagna e Irlanda, solo la Spagna ha mantenuto invariate le sue previsioni, gli altri quattro paesi hanno riformulato le stime 2020 al rialzo.

In termini monetari la revisione al ribasso del Belgio potrebbe significare la perdita di 1,5 miliardi di euro, al contrario l’Irlanda potrebbe guadagnarne 4.

The Italian ceramic and brick machinery and equipment industry reported sales of 1.73 billion euros in 2019, a downturn that has continued into the current year and marks a return to the revenue levels of 2013. After five years of record growth that saw the industry reach a turnover of more than 2.2 billion euros, the signs of a slowdown that had already emerged in 2018 intensified further in 2019 and resulted in a 19.8% contraction in volumes. This decline was a combined result of the expiry of the Industry 4.0 tax incentives in Italy and the slowdown in international construction sector investments.

The picture emerging from the 28th Statistical Survey conducted by the MECS - Acimac Research Department and presented at the annual meeting of the Italian Ceramic Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers’ Association revealed a 20.4% fall in exports to 1.262 billion euros, a decline of more than one-fifth. Domestic sales also fell (-18.3%) to a turnover of 468 million euros.

“From the indications at the end of 2018 we were already expecting a decline in volumes, if not of this magnitude, especially after the significant technological investments driven by the Industry 4.0 incentives,” said Acimac’s outgoing chairman Paolo Sassi. “The weakness of the global construction industry isn’t helping, and we are now also having to deal with the effects of the Covid-19 emergency and lockdown, which have impacted our manufacturing operations and disrupted world trade. We are counting on a rebound effect next year and in 2022.”

L’industria italiana delle macchine e attrezzature per ceramica e laterizio chiude il 2019 con un giro d’affari di 1,73 miliardi di Euro e torna ai livelli di fatturato del 2013, lasciando un’eredità negativa all’esercizio in corso. Dopo un quinquennio di crescita record che aveva portato i costruttori a superare i 2,2 miliardi di Euro, nel 2019 sono andati accentuandosi i segnali di rallentamento già emersi l’anno precedente e la flessione dei volumi ha toccato il 19,8%. Un dato da leggere alla luce sia dell’esaurirsi in Italia dell’effetto traino degli incentivi fiscali di Industria 4.0, sia del rallentamento degli investimenti internazionali nel settore costruzioni.

❱ Brick and tile machinery: a smaller contraction than in 2018 The breakdown of turnover by client sectors (ceramic tiles, bricks and roof tiles, sanitaryware, tableware, refractories and technical ceramics) reveals the continued dominance of tile machinery in 2019, which accounted for 85% of the industry’s total turnover despite falling sharply (-21.2%) to 1,470.8 million euros. Next came sanitaryware machinery, followed by brick and roof tile machinery in third place with a 4.7% share of total sales revenue (compared to 4.2% in 2018), down from 90.5 million to 80.5 million euros (a fall of 11.1%).

Both domestic sales (-4.3%) and exports (-12%) contributed to this decline in turnover. It should be noted, however, that these contractions were smaller than in 2018, when the sector lost 27.6% of its turnover (-13% in Italy and -29.2% in exports).

Mantengono il terzo posto, dopo i sanitari, le macchine per laterizio, con un contributo al giro d’affari complessivo del 4,7% (era il 4,2% nel 2018) passando da 90,5 milioni di Euro a 80,5 milioni di Euro registrando una flessione dell’11,1%.

economics the largest export market with a 35.7% share of total turnover, generating sales of over 25 million euros (up 1% on 2018).

South America retained second position in the rankings despite losing almost half of its share with a 46.9% contraction to 11.2 million euros, while North Africa drew almost level in

third place and non-EU Europe in fourth (down by 15.7% and 14.1% respectively to 11.2 million and 11.1 million euros).

Following a severe decline in 2018, the situation improved in the Middle East, which regained ground and reached fifth position with 8.9 million euros (+62.1%). Despite the very modest volumes (1.1 million euros), sales in China grew rapidly (+77.9%), while North America also saw strong growth of +47%. ❱ Raw materials preparation machinery was the biggest selling sector Just as in the two-year period 2017-2018, raw materials preparation plants were the best-selling family of machinery with a 23% share of total sales. However, turnover fell by 15.3% compared to 2018 to reach 18.5 million euros. Sales of moulds and dies also suffered a decline (14.4 million euros, -5.1%), while storage and handling systems saw double-digit growth (+15.1%) to reach 13.8 million euros. Shaping and extrusion machinery sales also grew slightly (+0.4%) to 12.1 million euros. These were followed by sales of firing plants at 8.9 million euros (-28.5%), drying equipment (6.3 million euros; -16.2%), sorting, packaging and palletising machines (2.8 million euros; -26%) and glazing systems (1.7 million euros; -32.9%). Moulds and dies were the machinery category in greatest demand in the Italian market with sales of 2.9 million euros, or 28.2% of total domestic turnover.

Other growth categories were equipment for shaping and extrusion (+8.2%), storage and handling (+25%), and sorting, packaging and palletisation (+9%).

❱ L’export delle macchine per laterizi: l’UE mantiene il podio Seppur in flessione, l’export rimane punto di forza del settore assorbendo l’87,2% del volume d’affari totale attestandosi a quota 70,2 milioni di Euro. Tra i mercati di destinazione l’Unione Europea, con un’incidenza sul fatturato totale del 35,7%, mantiene il primo posto nella classifica dell’export generando vendite per oltre 25 milioni di Euro (+1% sul 2018). Nel secondo gradino della classifica si conferma il Sud America che però dimezza il proprio peso e scende a quota 11,2 milioni di Euro (-46,9%), quasi a pari merito con il Nord Africa (terzo posto) e l’Europa Extra UE (quarto) in contrazione rispettivamente del 15,7% e del 14,1% pari a 11,2 e 11,1 milioni di Euro.

Le cose sono andate meglio in Medio Oriente (nel 2018 in caduta libera), che recupera terreno e si piazza in quinta posizione con 8,9 milioni di Euro (+62,1%), ma avanza anche la Cina (+77,9%) sebbene con volumi molto modesti (1,1 milioni di Euro), così pure il Nord America che mette a segno un +47%. ❱ Preparazione Terre gli impianti più venduti Così come si è verificato per

il biennio 2017-2018 gli impianti per la preparazione terre (23% del fatturato complessivo) risultano essere i più venduti tra le famiglie di macchine. Il volume d’affari tuttavia si ferma a 18,5 milioni di Euro, in calo del 15,3% sul 2018.

Perdono smalto anche gli stampi e le filiere (14,4 milioni di Euro, -5,1%), mentre gli impianti di stoccaggio e movimentazione salgono a 13,8 milioni di Euro realizzando performance a doppia cifra (+15,1%). Crescono leggermente (+0,4%) anche le macchine per formatura ed estrusione che si posizionano a quota 12,1 milioni.

Su valori inferiori si collocano le vendite di impianti di cottura con 8,9 milioni di Euro (-28,5%), essiccazione (6,3 milioni di Euro; -16,2%), le macchine per scelta, confezionamento e pallettizzazione (2,8 milioni di Euro; -26%) e gli impianti di smaltatura (1,7 milioni di Euro; -32,9%).

Sul mercato italiano la maggiore domanda ha riguardato gli stampi e filiere (2,9 milioni di Euro, ossia il 28,2% dell’intero fatturato domestico). Guadagnano quote formatura ed estrusione (+8,2%), stoccaggio e movimentazione (+25%), scelta confezionamento e pallettizzazione (+9%).

2019 marked the 12th consecutive year of contraction for the Italian brick and tile industry, bringing the total decline in production since 2007 to 79%. However, the fall in output was smaller than in previous years, standing at -2.6% with respect to 2018 to a total of 4.41 million tons.

According to figures published in the Confindustria Ceramica Statistical Survey, which for the first time included the brick and tile sector, this decline was attributable exclusively to the closure of 8 plants and the consequent loss of their 267,000 tons of production in 2018. The output of plants that continued operating actually grew by 3%.

In 2019, the 72 companies operating in Italy generated a turnover of 380 million euros and employed 3,200 people at 90 production sites using plants at 48% of capacity.

There was considerable internal reorganisation across the sector with the aim of concentrating production activities, as a result of which 8 companies accounted for more than half of total production sold on the Italian market.

“Although industrial production appears to have fallen for the 12th consecutive year, the result is actually an improvement on previous surveys,” comments Luigi Di Carlantonio, chairman of the Brick and Roof Tile Group of Confindustria Ceramica. “The brick and tile market has now stabilised, partly due

Il 2019 ha segnato il 12° anno consecutivo di flessione dell’industria italiana del laterizio portando a una perdita complessiva del 79% rispetto al 2007.

Nel confronto con gli anni precedenti il calo della produzione si è però attenuato segnando un -2,6% sul 2018 per un totale di 4,41 milioni di tonnellate.

Secondo i dati pubblicati nell’Indagine Statistica di Confindustria Ceramica, dove per la prima volta è confluita anche la sezione del comparto laterizi, tale flessione è da ricondurre esclusivamente alla chiusura di 8 impianti e alla perdita delle relative 267.000 tonnellate prodotte nel 2018.

Nel 2019 le 72 aziende presenti sul territorio hanno generato un fatturato di 380 milioni di euro con un numero di addetti pari a 3.200 unità e 90 siti produttivi che utilizzano gli impianti al 48% della capacità. to the shutdown or halt in production of a number of plants, thus reducing the gap between supply and demand.”

As for the various product types, standard bricks/blocks and facing bricks saw 4% and 3.4% growth respectively, whereas lightened paste blocks (-6.1%), floor blocks (-11.7%) and bases (-3.0%) all experienced a decline.

Production of hollow blocks and hollow ceiling tiles (-0.2%) and roof tiles (-0.4%) remained substantially stable.

“The growth in standard blocks and facing bricks follows heavy losses in previous years, so the upturn in production cannot be considered as representative,” explains Di Carlantonio. “Instead, the products that have seen smaller longterm losses are lightened paste blocks and roof tiles.” ❱ Variations in product type by region An analysis of variations across different Italian regions shows that the northwest saw a total increase in production of 6.4% while the northeast experienced a decline of 3.5%, central Italy 1.5% and southern Italy 15.08%. · The production of standard wall blocks grew in all areas except the south (-19%). · Production of lightened paste blocks increased in the northwest (+5.1%) but fell in the south (-16.3%), in the northeast (-10.9%) and in central Italy (-3.9%). · The production of hollow blocks and hollow ceiling tiles increased in the northwest (+8.4%) and remained substantially stable in the south, but contracted in the northeast (-1.3%) and in central Italy (-5%). · The production of facing bricks and pavers increased in the south (+17.4%, while remaining at small volumes) and in the northeast (+16.5%) and northwest (+1.9%), but fell in central Italy (-9.8%).

Per quanto concerne l’andamento delle tipologie produttive, a fronte di una crescita dei mattoni e blocchi normali e i faccia a vista rispettivamente del +4% e del +3,4%, sono risultati in calo i blocchi alleggeriti (-6,1%), i blocchi da solaio (-11,7%) e i fondelli del -3,0%. In sostanziale stabilità la produzione di forati e tavelle (-0,2%) e coperture (-0,4%).

In termini di performance regionali, il nord ovest ha incrementato la produzione totale del +6,4%, il nord est ha registrato una flessione del -3,5%, il centro del -1,5% e il sud del -15,08%.

• La produzione di elementi da muro normale cresce in tutte le aree tranne al sud (-19%).

• Il muro alleggerito incrementa la produzione nel solo nord ovest (+5,1%), mentre registra cali al sud (-16,3%), al nord est (-10,9%) e al centro (-3,9%).

• Forati e tavelle crescono nel Nord ovest (+8,4%), in sostanziale stabilità al sud, ma in flessione al nord est (-1,3%) e al centro (-5%).

• La produzione di faccia a vista e pavimenti cresce al sud ma su volumi ridotti, (+17,4%), al nord est (+16,5%) e al nord ovest (+1,9%). In flessione invece al centro (-9,8%).

• Solai e fondelli registrano un incremento nell’area nord est (+4,3%), confermano il dato 2018 nell’area nord ovest e subiscono una riduzione della produzione al centro (-4,5%) e al sud (-30,2%).

• Dinamiche positive infine per le coperture al nord ovest (+12,2%) e al centro (+3,3%), mentre è in calo la produzione al nord est (-8,9%) e al sud (-13,5%).

“La crescita dei blocchi normali e del faccia a vista è legata alle dinamiche di forte perdita degli anni precedenti, in tal senso l’incremento di produzione non può essere considerato come un indicatore rappresentativo”, spiega Di Carlantonio. “Piuttosto, i laterizi che hanno dimostrato invece di perdere meno nel lungo periodo sono i blocchi alleggeriti in pasta e gli elementi per coperture”.

Relativamente alla distribuzione geografica, su 90 impianti attivi 50 operano al nord del paese, dove sono stati prodotti nel 2019 2,36 milioni di tonnellate di laterizio, ovvero più della metà (54%) del dato nazionale. I rimanenti 40 impianti, localizzati nel centro e nel sud hanno prodotto nel 2019 2,04 milioni di tonnellate di laterizio.

❱ Andamenti territoriali per tipologia di prodotto

The remaining 40 plants located in central and southern Italy produced 2.04 million tons of bricks and tiles in 2019. ❱ Forecasts, changes and future trends Luigi Di Carlantonio believes that the industry can expect to see a recovery as early as next year, although the construction market has already shown cautious optimism during the post-lockdown period with the reopening of construction sites and building merchants. “We also believe that the 110% Superbonus included in the recently enacted Relaunch Decree – with the increase in building incentives aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing seismic risk – can give a valuable boost to the economy of the entire industry and beyond,” he continues. “This is also a unique opportunity for homeowners, who are able to renovate their properties for minimal cost thanks to the new tax measures.”

Di Carlantonio also believes that to restart the industry it is essential to continue product innovation and anticipate future trends. “This is the most important lever together with the ability to facilitate synergies with other building components so as to offer the market multi-performance systems, which in addition to complying with the most stringent regulations also meet high quality standards. It will also be necessary to continue the process of plant rationalisation so as to adapt production capacity to market demand.”

One thing is certain: the sector must adapt to the changes brought about by the coronavirus emergency. The lockdown has transformed housing requirements and made people reassess the importance and functionality of their homes. “A healthy environment and new living spaces are the most important criteria in the search for a new home. This means it is essential to provide consumers with accurate information about what the market has to offer and to propose advanced construction solutions based on natural materials that guarantee energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, living comfort, safety and health. It goes without saying that these are all intrinsic characteristics of bricks and tiles and ceramic materials in general.”

simo anno, ma già nella fase di ripartenza dalla pandemia, con il riavvio dei cantieri e delle rivendite edili, si è potuto registrare un cauto ottimismo del mercato delle costruzioni. Inoltre, aggiunge il Presidente “Riteniamo che il Superbonus 110% del Decreto Rilancio recentemente convertito in Legge - con il potenziamento degli incentivi per l’edilizia funzionali all’efficientamento energetico e la riduzione del rischio sismico - possa dare una valida spinta all’economia dell’intera filiera e non solo. Ricordiamo che è un’occasione unica anche per i cittadini che con le nuove misure fiscali possono rifarsi casa con il minimo impegno finanziario”.

Ripartenza significa anche proseguire con l’innovazione di prodotto anticipando i trend del futuro. Secondo Di Carlantonio è “la leva più importante insieme alla capacità di agevolare le sinergie con altri componenti edilizi per proporsi sul mercato con sistemi multi-prestazionali che, oltre ad essere conformi alle più stringenti normative, siano

anche caratterizzati da elevati standard qualitativi. Oltre a questo sarà inoltre necessario proseguire nel percorso di razionalizzazione degli impianti, in modo da rendere la capacità produttiva coerente con il mercato”.

Una cosa è certa: il settore si dovrà trasformare proprio alla luce dei cambiamenti indotti dall’emergenza sanitaria. Il lockdown ha infatti modificato le esigenze abitative e indotto a rivalutare l’importanza e la funzionalità delle case. “Ambienti salubri e nuovi spazi vitali sono gli indispensabili prerequisiti nella ricerca di un nuovo alloggio. È quindi fondamentale trasferire ai cittadini corrette informazioni rispetto all’offerta del mercato, proporre soluzioni costruttive evolute e al tempo stesso prodotte con materiali naturali, capaci di garantire efficienza energetica, sostenibilità ambientale, comfort abitativo, sicurezza e salubrità. Ovviamente tutte peculiarità intrinseche dei laterizi e dei materiali ceramici in generale”.

The outbreak of Covid-19 in early 2020 brought disruption to all sectors of the economy, and the real estate market was no exception. While the full impact of the pandemic remains to be seen, the real estate sector is likely to experience difficulties in the shorter term as state funds are redirected to tackling the crisis. However, the government’s LE100bn ($6.3bn) stimulus package introduced in April 2020, as well as the $2.8bn emergency financial assistance given by the IMF the following month, should help to support the industry’s growth in the medium to long term.

Confirming the importance of the sector for the Egyptian economy, in May 2020 the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities announced that it was taking urgent steps to speed up the implementation of projects. Together with legislation to reform the real estate sector reviewed by the government in September 2019, this should give a valuable boost to the country’s construction industry. ❱ Investments linked to advanced urbanisation In recent years the growth of the real estate sector has been supported by government investment in large-scale infrastructure projects, which first began to accelerate in 2013 in an attempt to foster economic and political stability.

Lo scoppio del Covid-19 nei primi mesi del 2020 ha causato squilibri in tutti i settori dell’economia egiziana e il mercato immobiliare non ha fatto eccezione. Mentre il reale impatto della pandemia resta ancora da quantificare, è probabile che nel breve periodo il comparto venga penalizzato dal dirottamento dei fondi statali su attività necessarie ad affrontare la crisi. Tuttavia, il pacchetto di incentivi da 100 miliardi di LE (lire egiziane) pari a 6,3 miliardi di dollari stanziato dal Governo ad aprile, nonché i 2,8 miliardi di dollari erogati dal FMI il mese successivo, dovrebbero aiutare a sostenere la crescita del settore nel medio/lungo termine. Confermando l’importanza del comparto per l’econo-

In FY 2018/19 public and private investment in housing and real estate activities totalled LE103.5bn ($6.4bn), up 28% from LE80.4bn ($4.9bn) the previous year. The sector is a major contributor to economic growth and accounted for 11.2% of the country’s GDP in 2018/19. It also directly or indirectly employed approximately 6 million people in the same period. Rising investment in the real estate sector is primarily being fuelled by the growing trend of urbanisation, which is being supported by the government’s National Strategic Plan for Urban Development 2052, which aims to double Egypt’s urban area from 7% to 14%. Under this plan the government is constructing 20 new cities, which will cover around 235,000 ha in total and accommodate 26 million people. The New Administrative Capital is the government’s main priority in terms of infrastructure development. The city aims to ease congestion in central Cairo and areas close to the Nile as the population continues to rise. Following the closure of sites due to the pandemic, in May 2020 construction fully resumed with new protective measures. President El Sisi announced that two residential districts were set to be completed by the end of 2021, while the business district would be completed by early 2022.

Thanks to its strategic location and use of smart infrastructure, the new capital has already generated considerable investor interest and has attracted more than 300 investors. ❱ Residential building: the housing gap needs to be bridged According to real estate consultancy JLL Egypt, the number of residential units in New Cairo and 6th of October City that have been handed over for immediate occupation stood at 159,000. Nell’esercizio 2018/19 gli investimenti pubblici e privati in attività immobiliari hanno registrato un valore pari a 103,5 miliardi di LE (6,4 miliardi di dollari), in crescita del 28% rispetto agli 80,4 miliardi (4,9 miliardi di dollari) dell’anno precedente. Il settore ha così contribuito in modo determinante alla crescita economica e, nell’anno, ha rappresentato l’11,2% del PIL del Paese creando circa 6 milioni di posti di lavoro tra occupati diretti e indiretti. L’aumento degli investimenti nel settore immobiliare è stato principalmente alimentato dalla crescente tendenza all’urbanizzazione, supportata dal National Strategic Plan for Urban Development 2052, che mira a raddoppiare l’area urbana dell’Egitto (dal 7% al 14%). In base a questo piano, il Governo sta costruendo 20 nuove città che copriranno circa 235 mila ettari totali e ospiteranno 26 milioni di persone. La nuova Capitale Amministrativa rappresenta la priorità assoluta. La città mira ad alleg-

gerire la congestione nel centro del Cairo e nelle aree vicine al Nilo causata dalla continua crescita della popolazione.

Dopo il blocco dei cantieri imposto dal lockdown, a maggio i lavori di costruzione hanno ripreso regolarmente il loro corso con le necessarie misure di sicurezza. Il presidente El Sisi ha annunciato che due distretti residenziali saranno completati entro la fine del 2021, mentre il Business District sarà pronto a inizio 2022. Grazie alla sua posizione strategica e all’uso di infrastrutture smart, la Nuova Capitale ha già attratto oltre 300 investitori. ❱ Edilizia residenziale: il deficit abitativo va colmato Secondo la società di consulenza immobiliare JLL Egypt, il numero di unità abitative consegnate lo scorso anno nel New Cairo e nella 6th of October City ammonterebbe a 159mila. Per il 2020 era previsto il completamento di circa 58 mila nuovi alloggi situati in gran parte nel Cairo orientale, ma l’attua-

tion in 2020, the majority of which are to be built in eastern Cairo. However, JLL remained cautious about whether these projects would be completed on time due to budgetary issues and market stagnation. Indeed, in the first quarter of 2020 only 135 units were completed, meaning that the total residential stock remained virtually unchanged compared to the previous quarter. However, in 2019 the market was characterised by weaker demand for residential property compared to 2018 as a result of slowing consumer purchasing power and high interest rates. Recent years have also seen an accumulated oversupply of high-end real estate accessible only to high-income households, while middle- and low-income housing segments remain largely untapped. According to Global Property Guide, as of June 2019 Egypt had a property shortage of about 3 million units, and would need 175,000 to 200,000 additional housing units each year to fill this gap. At the same time there were approximately 5.6 million vacant high-end units throughout the country. In response to the housing gap, in 2014 the government implemented a five-year plan to provide 1 million subsidised homes to low-income citizens. As of July 2019 the programme had benefited 241,517 families. ❱ Retail building grows Retail building in Cairo also recorded gains in 2019, increasing from 2.1 million square metres in 2018 to 2.2 million sqm of gross leasable area (GLA). As of the first quarter of 2020 it stood at 2.3 million sqm, but current market conditions are likely to result in project delays. In the final quarter of 2019 Cairo’s retail GLA grew by 8,200 square metres, with a number of new mixed-used developments in New Cairo adding to the supply. In this period, average retail rents grew by 10% y-o-y and the vacancy rate fell to 12%, compared to 16% in the same period of 2018. According to JLL, approximately 7000 sqm of additional retail space will be completed between April and December 2020. As large-scale shopping malls continue to come on-line, demand for food and beverage outlets remains strong: the number of contractors fitting units at the Arkan business, retail and leisure complex in West Cairo grew by 60% in one week. The retail sector is likely to see a slowdown due to the rise of online shopping, although the growth of e-commerce activity is expected to boost the country’s burgeoning warehousing and logistics segment. ❱ Covid-19 slows demand for office space after growth in 2019 The gross leasable area of office space in Cairo has risen steadily in recent years, from 936,000 sqm in 2015 to 1.1 million sqm in 2019. The average vacancy rate in Cairo fell to 12% in the last quarter of 2019 compared to 23% in the same period of 2018. West Cairo was the most popular office location in the capital, with a number of high-end projects and extensions taking place, such as the Capital Business Park in Giza. In the third quarter, office rental prices in West Cairo rose by around 11% y-o-y as a result of strong demand for high-end gated communities. Demand was also robust in eastern Cairo as developers looked to resettle in close prox-

Nel primo trimestre 2020, infatti, sono state completate solo 135 unità, il che significa che lo stock residenziale totale è rimasto pressoché invariato rispetto al trimestre precedente. Va tuttavia evidenziato che, nel 2019, il mercato è stato caratterizzato da una domanda più debole di immobili residenziali rispetto al 2018, a causa del rallentamento del potere d’acquisto dei consumatori e degli alti tassi di interesse. Gli ultimi anni hanno inoltre generato un eccesso nell’offerta di immobili di lusso, accessibili solo dalla popolazione ad alto reddito. I segmenti abitativi a medio e basso reddito sono invece tuttora carenti. A giugno 2019 Global Property Guide rilevava che l’Egitto presentava un deficit di circa 3 milioni di unità abitative che avrebbe dovuto essere colmato al ritmo di 175/200 mila alloggi/anno.

Parallelamente, alla stessa data, erano disponibili in tutto il Paese circa 5,6 milioni di alloggi di fascia alta. In risposta al divario abitativo, nel 2014 il Governo aveva attuato un piano quinquennale per fornire 1 milione di case sovvenzionate a cittadini a basso reddito. A luglio 2019 ne avevano già beneficiato 241.517 famiglie. ❱ L’edilizia commerciale cresce Nel 2019 l’edilizia commerciale del Cairo ha registrato sviluppi abbastanza positivi passando da 2,1 milioni di metri quadrati del 2018 a 2,2 milioni di superficie lorda affittabile (SLA). A partire dal primo trimestre 2020 la superficie è salita a 2,3 milioni di mq, ma le attuali condizioni di mercato potrebbero comportare ri-

tardi nella conclusione dei progetti. Nell’ultimo trimestre 2019 la SLA al dettaglio del Cairo è cresciuta di 8.200 metri quadrati, con una serie di nuovi sviluppi a uso misto nel New Cairo. Nel periodo gli affitti medi sono cresciuti del 10% su base annua e il tasso di spazio libero è sceso al 12%, rispetto al 16% dello stesso periodo 2018. Secondo JLL, tra aprile e dicembre 2020 saranno completati circa 7.000 metri quadrati di spazio commerciale aggiuntivo. All’interno dei centri commerciali, in continua crescita, rimane alta la domanda di punti vendita per il food & beverage: nel nuovo shopping mall di Arkan (West Cairo), la richiesta di spazi commerciali è aumentata del 60% in una sola settimana.

Con l’impennata dell’e-commerce è probabile che il settore del commercio al dettaglio subisca un rallentamento, tuttavia l’incremento delle vendite online dovrebbe dare notevole impulso al fiorente segmento dei magazzini e della logistica. ❱ Il Covid-19 frena la richiesta di uffici dopo un 2019 in salita Al Cairo, negli ultimi anni, la superficie lorda affittabile del segmento uffici è passata dai 936 mila mq del 2015 a 1,1 milioni di mq del 2019. Nell’ultimo trimestre dello scorso anno il tasso medio di spazio libero è sceso al 12% contro il 23% del 2018.

Il Cairo occidentale è stata la location più gettonata della capitale, con una serie di progetti di fascia alta e altre costruzioni in progress, come il Capital Business Park di Giza. Nel terzo trimestre i prezzi degli affitti nell’area sono aumentati dell’11% circa su base annua, grazie alla forte richiesta di immobili di pregio.

Bene anche la domanda di locazione nel Cairo orientale, trainata dalla vicinanza con l’Aeroporto Internazionale e dall’appeal generato dalla nuova Capita-

In New Cairo, a number of major mixed-use developments containing retail, office, health care and leisure facilities have been announced and are set to drive further demand. However, demand for offices is expected to remain subdued as more companies opt to allow employees to work from home, so office rents may not rise at the same 10% rate reported in 2019. The outlook for 2020 is uncertain. In February 2020 JLL predicted that around 156,000 sqm of new office space would be completed by the end of 2020, with more than five office complexes in the pipeline. However, this did not take into account potential disruption to construction projects and decline in demand caused by the pandemic. Looking ahead, developers are focusing on delivering more flexible office space to meet the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups. ❱ The outlook for the future is positive In the long term the country is expected to see growth in investment and construction activity to meet the housing needs of the growing population. Egypt’s population reached 100 million in early 2020, with around 61% of the population under the age of 30, and is predicted to continue growing by 2.6% per year. Demand has also been bolstered by the country’s significant expatriate population (approximately 10% of residents), which however has seen a considerable decline as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak. According to research conducted by local real estate marketplace Aqarmap, expatriates accounted for 45% of online property searches prior to the pandemic but just 17% in May 2020. Most developers expect the pandemic to revolutionise the entire real estate sector, accelerating the digitalisation of real estate and encouraging the use of technology and online services.

Nel New Cairo sono stati peraltro annunciati una serie di importanti sviluppi a uso misto (negozi al dettaglio, uffici, strutture sanitarie e per il tempo libero), che dovrebbero guidare ulteriormente la domanda. Va tuttavia evidenziato che, a causa del ricorso allo smart working, con molta probabilità il segmento andrà incontro a una contrazione, pertanto la richiesta di uffici in locazione potrebbe risultare in calo rispetto al +10% registrato nel 2019.

Sul 2020 vige incertezza.

A febbraio, la società di consulenza immobiliare JLL Egypt aveva previsto che entro l’anno sarebbero stati completati circa 156 mila mq di nuovi uffici, con altri cinque complessi già pianificati, stima che ha perso di validità a seguito del blocco dei cantieri e alla flessione della domanda causati dalla pandemia. Per il futuro i progettisti si stanno concentrando sulla fornitura di spazi più flessibili per soddisfare le esigenze di piccole e medie imprese e start-up.

❱ Outlook: il futuro si preannuncia positivo Per colmare il deficit abitativo, nel lungo periodo il Paese dovrebbe vedere una crescita degli investimenti e delle attività di costruzione, anche alla luce del consistente aumento della popolazione: 100 milioni di abitanti a inizio 2020 di cui il 61% con meno di 30 anni, con stime di crescita del 2,6% annuo.

La domanda di alloggi è inoltre sostenuta dalla significativa quota di cittadini stranieri nel Paese (circa il 10% dei residenti totali), che si è però notevolmente ridotta a seguito dell’emergenza sanitaria.

Secondo la piattaforma locale Aqarmap, infatti, se prima della pandemia le ricerche di case online da parte di cittadini stranieri rappresentavano il 45% del totale, a maggio 2020 erano scese al 17%.

Per il futuro la maggior parte dei progettisti prevede che la pandemia rivoluzionerà l’intero comparto immobiliare accelerando la digitalizzazione e incoraggiando l’uso delle nuove tecnologie.

Leier International is one of the leading players in the European brick and tile industry with nine production sites in Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Croatia, but it also operates in real estate management, concrete, metalworking, mechanical engineering as well as sales and service of automotive brands with other production plants in Austria and Hungary. It has a total of 40 production sites and 2,800 employees. In 2019 it posted consolidated turnover of 380 million euros, 70% of which was generated by building materials (bricks and concrete). A large and constantly growing industrial group, Leier International continues to have a lot of confidence in the brick and tile industry, so much so that in the two-year period 2018-2019 it completed two acquisitions in the sector. The first was Brikston and the second Siceram, two Romanian companies with a strong market presence that will receive a big boost in terms of its business development from membership of the group.

We spoke to Michael Leier, CEO of Leier Group.

BWR: You completed two acquisitions in two years in the same country. Why is Romania so important to you?

MICHAEL LEIER: With its strong tradition of clay brick con-

Complessivamente ha 40 siti produttivi e conta 2.800 dipendenti. Nel 2019 il giro d’affari consolidato ha raggiunto i 380 milioni di euro, il 70% generato dai materiali da costruzione (laterizi + cemento). Stiamo parlando di Leier International, una realtà industriale con headquarter in Austria già di notevoli dimen-

sioni, ma che non smette di crescere e, soprattutto, continua a credere nel mattone, tant’è che nel biennio 2018-2019 ha finalizzato ben due acquisizioni nel settore. Si tratta rispettivamente di Brickston e Siceram, società rumene molto ben posizionate sul mercato che ora, grazie alla nuova proprietà, riceveranno certamente nuovi impulsi per lo sviluppo del business.

Ne parliamo con Michael Leier, CEO di Leier Group.

BWR: Doppio deal in due anni nello stesso Paese. Come mai è così importante per voi la Romania?

MICHAEL LEIER: Con un mercato delle costruzioni molto legato al laterizio, la Romania ri-

struction, Romania has long been part of our development plans. We thought that the best way to strengthen our presence would be to acquire businesses already well established in the country and with proven experience in the sector. So when the opportunity arose, we did not hesitate to enter into negotiations to acquire first Brikston and then Siceram. The business talks were completed in 30 days. Through Brikston and Siceram we will be able to offer Romanian customers a wider range of products and maintain the high quality standards they are accustomed to. We intend to continue to invest in Romania, and if other similar opportunities arise we will certainly take them without thinking twice.

BWR: What is the combined turnover of the two companies and how will the management change?

M. LEIER: In 2019 the total turnover of the Leier Group in Romania stood at approximately 60 million euros. Following the recent acquisitions, we are now the largest building materials producer with a unique product portfolio in terms of both the breadth and depth of our range. At an organisational level we’re aiming to maintain the experience of the previous management while at the same time introducing new managerial roles capable of bringing fresh ideas. We are also continuing our investment plans by reinvesting the majority of the company’s profits.

BWR: What were the factors that made these companies choose you rather than other potential buyers?

M. LEIER: Our completely open and transparent approach towards the two companies’ managements was certainly one of the decisive factors. In times like the present it is essential for partners to get to know each other well and estab-

entrava già da tempo nei nostri piani di sviluppo. Abbiamo pensato che il modo migliore per potenziare la nostra presenza fosse rilevare attività già radicate sul territorio e con comprovata esperienza nel settore. Dunque, quando si è presentata l’occasione non abbiamo esitato a metterci in lizza e iniziare le trattative per l’acquisto prima di Brikston e in seguito di Siceram. I due deal sono stati finalizzati in soli 30 giorni. Con Brikston e Siceram saremo in grado di offrire ai clienti rumeni una gamma più ampia di prodotti e di mantenere gli elevati standard di qualità a cui sono abituati. In Romania, peraltro, è nostra intenzione continuare a investire e, se si presenteranno altre opportunità analoghe, sapremo coglierle al volo.

BWR: Le due aziende insieme che volume d’affari producono e come cambierà la gestione?

M. LEIER: Nel 2019 il fatturato totale del gruppo Leier in

Romania è stato di circa 60 milioni di euro. Grazie alle recenti acquisizioni siamo diventati i principali produttori di materiali da costruzione, con un portafoglio prodotti unico per ampiezza e profondità di gamma.

Per quanto riguarda la gestione, stiamo cercando di equilibrare le risorse salvaguardando l’esperienza del vecchio management e inserendo al contempo nuovi ruoli direttivi in grado di apportare nuove idee. Stiamo inoltre proseguendo nei nostri piani di investimento reinvestendo la maggior parte dei profitti aziendali.

BWR: Quali sono stati i motivi che hanno fatto propendere la scelta su di voi rispetto ad altri potenziali acquirenti?

M. LEIER: Credo che l’approccio di completa apertura tenuto con il management delle due società sia stato sicuramente uno dei fattori determinanti. In questi frangenti è fondamentale conoscersi a fondo e conquistare la fiducia del partner. La no-

lish mutual trust. Our status as a family-run but large business with successfully managed companies in 7 countries in Central and Eastern Europe definitely worked in our favour. Another advantage was our ability to ensure the expansion and long-term development of both companies while guaranteeing the jobs of the entire workforce, not to mention our more than 50 years of experience in research into improving product quality.

BWR: How did you come to start up your business fifty years ago?

M. LEIER: I always dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur.

At the age of 19, I opened my own grocery store with my wife and also became a founding member of the Spar Austria chain. It was the time of reconstruction in the country and building materials were in strong demand. So in 1970 I embarked on a new venture and founded my first concrete plant in Horitschon, followed a few years later by another in Frauenkirchen. At that time, the Iron Curtain was still in place and meant that our sales area was limited to the east, but even before the political changes of 1989 we managed to establish our own production sites first at Gönyu and Pécs in Hungary and then near Malbork in Poland. Along with a strong identity grounded in traditional values, we have a well-established corporate culture based on quality, reliability, research, flexibility, dynamism and a rapid response. These are the keys to our success.

BWR: When did you begin brick and tile production?

M. LEIER: In 1994 we acquired our first brick plant in Mátraderecske, Hungary. This marked the start of a long process of expansion in the sector in Eastern Europe, where we gradually opened new production facilities. Leier already operates 9 factories in the brick and tile sector: 2 in Hungary, 3 in Poland, 1 each in Slovakia and Croatia, and now the 2 plants acquired in Romania. We operate a total of 17 kilns for bricks and roof tiles in our factories.

BWR: So Poland is the market where you have the strongest presence…

M. LEIER: Currently, , if we talk about ceramic products, yes.

In Poland, Leier works under the company name Leier Polska SA. Around 58% of the Polish company’s turnover is generated by the three brick factories located in Wola Rzedzinska, Markowicze and Sierakowice. Leier Polska produces modern key-and-slot bricks and acoustic insulation bricks. The annual production of the Leier brickworks totals over 350 million NF (approximately 685,000 cubic metres), equivalent to 6.3% of the total production of masonry products (including aerat-

stra impronta di tipo familiare, ma con assetto e dimensioni ragguardevoli, oltre alle società gestite con successo in sette paesi dell’Europa centro-orientale, hanno poi parlato al posto nostro. Ha giocato senz’altro a nostro favore anche la capacità di garantire l’espansione e lo sviluppo a lungo termine di entrambe le aziende, mantenendo intatta la forza lavoro e, non ultimo, gli oltre 50 anni di storia spesi in ricerca per alzare la qualità dei materiali.

BWR: Da dove siete partiti cinquant’anni fa?

M. LEIER: Ho sempre coltivato il sogno di diventare imprenditore. All’età di 19 anni ho aperto il mio primo negozio di generi alimentari insieme a mia moglie diventando in seguito membro fondatore della catena Spar Austria. Era il periodo della ricostruzione del Paese e si registrava una forte richiesta di materiali da costruzione. Così, nel 1970, tentai una nuova avventura fondando la mia prima fabbrica di calcestruzzo a Horitschon e, pochi anni dopo, la seconda a Frauenkirchen. A quei tempi c'era ancora la "cortina di ferro" che limitava l’accesso verso est, ma anticipando la svolta politica del 1989, siamo riusciti a insediarci con stabilimenti produttivi prima in Ungheria, a Gönyu e Pécs, e poi in Polonia nei pressi di Malbork. Alla forte identità improntata al rispetto di valori tradizionali, affianchiamo una consolidata cultura aziendale basa-

ta su qualità, affidabilità, ricerca, flessibilità, dinamismo e rapidità di risposta. Sono queste le ragioni del nostro successo.

BWR: Invece la produzione di laterizi quando inizia?

M. LEIER: Nel 1994 abbiamo rilevato il primo stabilimento di mattoni a Mátraderecske, in Ungheria. Da lì è iniziato un lungo percorso volto a rafforzare la nostra presenza nel comparto in Europa Orientale, dove abbiamo via via aperto nuove strutture produttive. Nel business del laterizio oggi Leier gestisce 9 siti: 2 in Ungheria, 3 in Polonia, 1 in Slovacchia, 1 in Croazia oltre ai 2 stabilimenti acquisiti in Romania. Complessivamente nelle nostre fabbriche gestiamo un totale di 17 forni per mattoni e tegole.

BWR: La Polonia è quindi il mercato dove siete più presenti…

M. LEIER: Attualmente sì. In Polonia operiamo attraverso Leier Polska. Circa il 58% del fatturato dell'azienda è generato dalle tre fabbriche di laterizi situate a Wola Rzedzinska, Markowicze e a Sierakowice.

Leier Polska produce mattoni moderni a incastro e con caratteristiche di elevato isolamento acustico. La produzione annuale si attesta a più di 35 milioni di pezzi NF (ovvero circa 685mila metri cubi) e incide per il 6,3% della produzione totale di materiali da muratura (compresi calcestruzzo aerato e silicati) in Polonia.

BWR: Da quali segmenti edilizi

BWR: In which building segments are your products in greatest demand?

M. LEIER: Our product range covers all types of buildings, from housing to civil engineering, environmental technology and sustainable construction, and even the reconstruction of historical buildings. We recently completed a major project on the banks of the Danube in the town of Győr in Hungary. More than 1,000 pallets of Leiertherm blocks, as well as other materials, were allocated to the complex, which consists of a residential section and 16 commercial premises covering a total area of approximately 4,000 square metres.

BWR: How much do you invest in new technology?

M. LEIER: In the two-year period 2018-2019 we invested about 120 million euros in plant upgrades. We believe it is important to invest constantly to adapt our product range to market demands and to be able to fulfil large orders rapidly. We use cutting-edge sustainable and energy-saving technologies that we purchase from leading European suppliers with consolidated experience and know-how. While continuing our technological development, we will also be able to exploit new business opportunities in terms of acquisitions not just in Romania but throughout the whole of Eastern Europe.

BWR: The first few months of 2020 have seen an unprecedented health emergency. How has your company dealt with the Covid-19 crisis?

M. LEIER: The period of widespread difficulty we are still experiencing has placed a strain on the day-to-day management of all manufacturing activities. In terms of production, our group has been left relatively unscathed by the pandemic. Thanks to the large spaces in our factories we were able to guarantee safe distancing for our employees right from the start, and this allowed us to continue production and maintain almost normal operations even during the months of lockdown. Moreover, during that period new housing demand remained buoyant, construction sites stayed open and building projects continued.

BWR: Will the crisis change the construction industry? In what way?

M. LEIER: A transformation is inevitable, but I believe it will be positive.

During the months of lockdown, people focused on the quality of their houses, reappraising the concept of home and consequently rethinking the design of indoor and outdoor spaces. This change will lead to a greater awareness of aspects such as the health and well-being of living spaces, so sustainable construction will dominate demand in the coming years. In terms of its future development, this is the goal that the real estate sector must set itself. It goes without saying that priority will be given to the building materials that best meet these requirements, and this is an area where Leier has a lot to offer.

Abbiamo appena concluso un importante progetto presso le rive del Danubio, nella città di Gyor, in Ungheria. Al complesso, che comprende una parte residenziale e 16 locali commerciali su una superficie complessiva di circa 4.000 mq, sono stati destinati più di 1.000 pallet di blocchi Leiertherm, oltre ad altri materiali.

BWR: Che portata hanno gli investimenti in nuova tecnologia?

M. LEIER: Nel biennio 2018-2019 abbiamo investito circa 120 milioni di euro nell’upgrading degli impianti. Riteniamo sia importante continuare a farlo per essere sempre sincronizzati con le richieste del mercato, non solo dal punto di vista dei prodotti e anche per far fronte in tempi brevi a ordini di grande portata. Ci avvaliamo di tecnologie innovative con un approccio sostenibile e orientate al risparmio energetico che acquistiamo da primari fornitori europei con consolidata esperienza e know how. Oltre a proseguire nello sviluppo tecnologico sapremo cogliere anche nuove opportunità di business nel campo delle acquisizioni in Romania e in tutta l’Europa Orientale.

BWR: I primi mesi del 2020 sono stati caratterizzati da un’emergenza sanitaria senza precedenti.

A livello aziendale come avete affrontato la crisi

provocata dal Covid-19?

M. LEIER: Il momento di generale complessità che stiamo tuttora attraversando, ha messo a dura prova la gestione ordinaria di tutte le attività manifatturiere. Fortunatamente, dal punto di vista produttivo, il nostro gruppo è stato solo sfiorato dalla pandemia. Grazie agli ampi spazi presenti nelle nostre fabbriche abbiamo potuto fin da subito garantire la distanza di sicurezza ai nostri dipendenti e questo ci ha permesso di continuare la produzione mantenendo la quasi normale operatività anche nei mesi di lockdown.

Nel periodo, inoltre, la domanda di nuove case non è diminuita, i cantieri sono rimasti aperti e i progetti edilizi hanno proseguito il loro corso.

BWR: L’industria delle costruzioni ne uscirà trasformata? E come?

M. LEIER: La trasformazione sarà inevitabile, ma positiva a mio avviso. Durante i mesi di blocco forzato la popolazione si è concentrata sulla qualità delle proprie abitazioni rivalutando l’idea di casa e con essa anche la concezione degli spazi interni ed esterni. Tale cambiamento porterà a una maggior sensibilità verso aspetti come benessere abitativo e salubrità, di conseguenza le costruzioni sostenibili nei prossimi anni diventeranno il cuore della domanda. In un’ottica di sviluppo, è questo l’obiettivo che si deve porre il comparto immobiliare. Va da sè che saranno privilegiati i materiali da costruzione più aderenti a queste esigenze e, in questo senso, Leier ha molto da offrire.

Innovation and automation in the Santafé factory upgrade Innovazione e automatismi nell’upgrading di Santafé Marcheluzzo S.p.A. (Caldogno - Italy)

A new chapter has begun in the longstanding partnership between Marcheluzzo S.p.A. and the Colombian group Santafé, one of Latin America’s largest brick and tile producers with seven factories and a total output of 600,000 tons/year of loadbearing and partition blocks, roof tiles, pavers and facing bricks. The Colombian group’s success derives from its spirit of innovation and focus on investment, as well as the creative flair that makes it the driving force behind the new architectural trends in the country. The need for increasingly sophisticated technology has led the Bogotá-based company to place a further order with Marcheluzzo for an industrial revamping project for its Soacha 3 plant. The decision to recontact the Vicenza-based company reflects the relationship of complete trust built up over the years, the success of previous installations and the professionalism of the after-sales service.

Si è aperto un nuovo capitolo della storica partnership tra Marcheluzzo S.p.A e il gruppo colombiano Santafé, tra i principali produttori di laterizi in America Latina con sette stabilimenti e una produzione complessiva di 600mila tonnellate anno tra blocchi portanti e divisori, tegole, pavimentazioni e mattoni faccia vista.

Alla base del successo lo spirito aziendale orientato all’innovazione e agli investimenti, oltre all’estro creativo che configura il gruppo come propulsore delle nuove tendenze architettoniche nel Paese.

L’esigenza di tecnologia sempre più sofisticata ha spinto l’azienda di Bogotà a richiedere nuovamente l’in-

tervento di Marcheluzzo per un progetto di revamping industriale destinato allo stabilimento Soacha 3.

La scelta di interpellare l’azienda vicentina nasce dal rapporto di piena fiducia instaurato negli anni, dal successo delle pregresse installazioni e dalla serietà nel servizio post vendita. matic drying curve management system.The next step was to install a new automatic cutter capable of cutting pieces of various sizes ranging from Bloquelon hollow blocks to facing bricks. At the same time, the old chain benches used for loading wet material onto the dryer platforms were replaced with toothed belt conveyors that operate without creating impressions on the wet products, thereby greatly improving their quality.

Modernisation continued in the area devoted to dry material setting on the kiln cars, where an innovative programming line capable of handling the production of new materials (such as Bloquelon blocks) was installed. Two robots with single grippers in the kiln car loading area perform precision loading of the material onto the cars while handling the material gently. As for kiln car handling, entry and exit transfer cars are supplied along with all the floor-level lines.

In order to improve product quality, a lateral pre-kiln with a length of about 120 metres has been built to allow for the storage and pre-heating of the bricks, thereby facilitating the preparation process in the initial kiln firing phase and improving consistency. nologia ha riguardato in prima battuta la sostituzione della ventilazione interna dell’essiccatoio e la fornitura del sistema automatico di gestione della curva di essiccazione.

In seguito è stata installata una nuova taglierina automatica in grado di tagliare pezzi di varie dimensioni partendo dai tavelloni Bloquellon fino ai mattoni faccia/vista.

Contemporaneamente, sono stati sostituiti i vecchi banchi a catene adibiti al carico del materiale umido sui pianali essiccatoio, con trasportatori a cinghie dentate che operano senza creare impronte sul prodotto umido, migliorandone notevolmente la qualità.

L’ammodernamento è proseguito nella zona di impilamento del materiale secco sui carri forno, dove ha trovato posto una innovativa linea di programmazione capace di gestire la produzione di nuovi materiali (tipo il Bloquellon). Due robot con pinze singole nella zona di carico dei carri forno assolvono con precisione al carico del materiale sui carri svolgendo un’azione “delicata” sul materiale.

Per quanto concerne la movimentazione dei carri forno, sono stati forniti dei trasbordatori di ingresso e uscita, oltre a tutte le linee a terra.

Allo scopo di migliorare la qualità dei manufatti è stato realizzato un pre-forno laterale della lunghezza di circa 120 metri che consente lo stoccaggio e il pre-riscaldo dei mattoni per rendere più agevole e uniforme la preparazione nella prima fase di cottura nel forno.

L’intervento più significativo è stato eseguito nella zona di scarico del cotto e sulla linea di confezionamento, dove il riammodernamento è stato pressoché totale. Due robot prelevano il prodotto cotto dai carri forno e alimentano due linee di programmazione indipendenti, ognuna equipaggiata di un sistema di pulizia ad aria compressa con aspirazione, che elimina i residui di cenere rilasciati dalla combustione sulla superficie del prodotto.

Two robots collect the fired product from the kiln cars and feed two independent programming lines, each equipped with a compressed air cleaning system with extraction, which eliminates the ash residues generated by combustion from the surface of the product. The material is then checked visually in a special area used for sorting and subsequently reprogrammed in organised modules to be picked up by a final robot which forms the finished package on the pallet.

The packaging line operates automatically by distributing the wooden pallets in the packaging area. The formed packages are then wrapped in stretchable nylon and secured with plastic straps, after which they are conveyed to the storage line and picked up by a forklift truck.

The success of the project has once again demonstrated Marcheluzzo’s enormous capacity to devise customised solutions and make them highly efficient and operational. With innovation written into its DNA, the company operates all over the world through well-established relationships with leading brick producers.

The Mladost roof tile production plant located in Leskovac, a city in central Serbia, has undergone extensive renovation with the aim of increasing productivity, modernising the production processes and improving product quality.

In the second half of 2019, the owners confirmed their trust in Bongioanni Macchine and commissioned the company to completely renovate the existing line it had supplied in 2010.

Bongioanni Macchine completed the upgrading operations from design through to final testing within a very short timeframe, concluding the project in the first few months of 2020. ❱ Latest generation solutions for the extruder: pressure head and extrusion die The new model of pressure head installed is ideal for symmetrical vertical extrusion of regular and preformed clay batts. The internal surface of the pressure head has a self-lubricating polyamide coating which improves clay flow, thereby reducing friction and consequently also energy consumption. The results after extrusion are excellent, with all the clay batts perfectly identical. The extrusion die supplied together with the pressure head is an ALFA type and is equipped with an internally adjustable brake activation system and a special device installed at the entrance which serves as a ho-

L’impianto per la produzione tegole di Mladost situato a Leskovac, città della Serbia Centrale, ha subito una profonda ristrutturazione.

Obiettivi: migliorare la produttività, modernizzare i processi e implementare la qualità dei manufatti.

Nell’ultimo semestre 2019, la proprietà ha affidato il progetto a Bongioanni Macchine, fornitore della linea esistente datata 2010 che, in virtù della credibilità e fiducia guadagnate, ha così provveduto alle operazioni di upgrading (dalla progettazione al collaudo finale) in tempi rapidissimi, concludendo l’intervento nei primi mesi del 2020.

❱ Soluzioni di nuova generazione per la mattoniera: bocca e filiera Il nuovo modello di bocca installata è ideale per l’estrusione verticale simmetrica di gallette normali e preformate. Al suo interno è presente un rivestimento in poliammide autolubrificante che migliora lo scorrimento dell’argilla, riducendo di conseguenza l’attrito e quindi il consumo energetico. Il risultato dopo l’estrusione è eccellente: tutte le gallette si presentano perfettamente uguali.

The extrusion dies have extra-long dimensions to obtain a larger conical cross-section and are specially designed to eliminate stresses inside the clay batts and the consequent risk of roof tile deformation. Once the plant has been stabilised, the tungsten carbide cores not only ensure a long lifetime (and therefore consistently stable clay batts) but also eliminate all traces of the extrusion die, thus improving the finished surface of the roof tile. This is followed by a double parabolic conveyor system that transports the clay columns from the vertical extrusion position to the side-by-side horizontal position and then on to the cutting area. ❱ Replacement of the guillotine cutting lines After the double parabolic conveyor, the two independent blades of the new Bongioanni electronic cutter perform a high-precision cut. Each cutter blade has two inverter-controlled asynchronous motors, one for the forward movement of the cutting unit at the same speed as the clay column and the other for high-speed cutting with a knife. The result guarantees a margin of error within ± 1 mm. The electrical board, designed to control multiple parameters at the same time, guarantees synchronised cam movements that result in

❱ Complete overhaul of the two double-mould presses After producing approximately 159 million roof tiles with an efficiency of 88%, the two type 13PV/G presses installed in 2010 underwent a complete overhaul and were returned to their original conditions. Considering the tight deadline, it was decided to return one of the two presses to the Bongioanni workshop while the second was overhauled on site. The press construction system adopted by Bongioanni involves assembly on a supporting structure (bushings and counter nuts) to allow parts subject to long-term wear to be replaced, thereby restoring the machine to its original condition. This allows even major overhauls to be carried out successfully, which is why even second-hand Bongioanni presses are much in demand. Bongioanni Macchine has built over 730 presses in the roof tile segment, most of which are still fully operational. ❱ New aesthetic effects: the success of teamwork Bongioanni Stampi was assigned the task of redesigning the entire roof tile range in order to improve their quality, appearance and sizes. This was possible thanks to the extensive knowledge and skills of the Mladost technical team coupled with the technical expertise of Bongioanni Stampi. Attention to detail and product aesthetics has further improved the Serbian company’s already high product quality standards, enabling it to increase its competitiveness in international markets. To date, Bongioanni Stampi has designed, developed and built more than 3,300 new models of roof tiles.

The work was completed to the customer’s full satisfaction thanks to the close cooperation between the two companies’ technical teams.

Cosmec achieved the same outstanding results in July when it succeeded in installing a double kiln car loading system and a new cutting line at the facility of a major US group without interrupting normal production, an important factor in a country where the real estate sector has continued to operate.

technology steady progress was made with respect to the agreed schedule. The new plant is designed to cut, transport and grip multiple formats of facing bricks, clinker and pavers, with or without chamfers, while maintaining the speed and productivity of the line. Also in July, Cosmec continued with the installation of the plant at the Khadidja Briqueterie factory in Algeria, collaborating during the lockdown with a local team that specialises in the installation of equipment for kilns and dryers. The operation, carried out under the constant supervision of the Italian company, was concluded successfully. The automated equipment consisting of a 6-axis Fanuc robot was instead set up by the supplier.

“Thanks to our meticulous design work and planning, we were able to start up the new line in Poland and make headway on the technological projects in the USA and Algeria through remote support, meeting the schedule that had been agreed prior to the emergency,” said Cosmec’s sales director Mirko Rorer.

“It was an unintended decision but one that made us appreciate the full potential of the new technologies in terms of both production and management. I’m certain that Italy and Italian-made products will maintain their leading role in the global market once the pandemic is over.”

While awaiting the expected recovery of the industry and the wider economy in 2021, Cosmec aims to strengthen its presence in international markets and will continue to offer the tailor-made solutions and customer care services that have proved highly effective even when carried out remotely.

Sempre a luglio Cosmec ha proseguito nelle operazioni di montaggio dell’impianto presso lo stabilimento di Khadidja Briqueterie, in Algeria, avvalendosi, durante il lockdown, della collaborazione di un’equipe locale specializzata nell’installazione di attrezzature per forni ed essiccatoi. L’intervento, portato avanti in continua connessione con l’azienda veronese, è stato concluso con successo. La messa a punto degli automatismi, ovvero del robot a 6 assi Fanuc, è stata invece portata a termine dalla ditta fornitrice.

nei progetti tecnologici in USA e Algeria tramite il supporto di assistenza “da remoto”, rispettando il timing che avevamo preparato prima dell’inizio dell’emergenza - ha dichiarato Mirko Rorer, direttore commerciale di Cosmec -. Si è trattato di una scelta non voluta, ma che in realtà ci ha fatto comprendere le piene potenzialità delle nuove tecnologie non solo in termini produttivi, ma anche gestionali. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe and unforeseen global impact and is forcing all industrial sectors to make unprecedented choices. The extended lockdown prompted companies to carry out extensive internal reorganisation, introduce employee safety measures and review their strategies and priorities. With the shutdown of construction sites and the freezing of investments, the construction industry was one of the sectors hit hardest by the crisis. This in turn had serious repercussions for the entire brick and tile industry, including producers of both machinery and finished products. But now the industry is getting back into gear and is facing enormous challenges that will force companies to fully exploit their resources and expertise. ❱ Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures The experience of Bedeschi It is hardly a surprise that the potential risks of the pandemic primarily affected companies with strong export activities.

However, a number of companies have succeeded in weathering the storm by responding boldly and swiftly to the unprecedented situation. The experience of Bedeschi is exemplary and demonstrates how a company with a 98% export share has managed to remain positive and even find new

La pandemia da COVID 19 ha colpito duramente e in modo inaspettato il mondo intero, mettendo tutto il sistema industriale davanti a scelte senza precedenti.

Il lockdown prolungato ha richiesto alle aziende una profonda riorganizzazione interna, interventi per la sicurezza dei dipendenti, la revisione di strategie e priorità. L’industria delle costruzioni, con lo stop dei cantieri e il congelamento degli investimenti, è stata tra le più penalizzate dalla crisi, di riflesso anche tutto il settore del laterizio (produttori di materiali e costruttori di macchine) ha subito contraccolpi piuttosto evidenti. Ma ora si riparte, ed è un momento di grandi sfide dove tutte le imprese, indistintamente, saranno chiamate a rimet-

tersi in gioco facendo leva su risorse e competenze specifiche. ❱ Tempi straordinari richiedono azioni straordinarie - L’esperienza di Bedeschi Che i rischi potenziali della pandemia potessero ripercuotersi soprattutto sulle imprese con forte vocazione all’export era facilmente intuibile. Tuttavia c’è anche chi, affrontando l’inedita situazione con coraggio e prontezza, è riuscito ad “arginare la tempesta”. In tal senso l’esperienza di Bedeschi è sicuramente positiva e dimostra come un’azienda con un tasso di export pari al 98% sia riuscita a non perdersi d’animo trovando anzi nuovi stimoli per le strategie future.

Right from the start of the pandemic, almost all the company’s employees began working from home, which enabled them to continue to work without interruption. While adopting all the safety measures specified in the decrees (sanitisation, work shifts, social distancing, etc.), Bedeschi continued its operations in the energy sector and its supplies to the Ilva steelworks in Taranto, which had commissioned the company to supply eco-sustainable machinery for its new facilities.

This uninterrupted market presence combined with effective management of ongoing projects in the heavy clay industry enabled Bedeschi to use the months of lockdown to continue its engineering activities and to be ready to resume production in early May. “After an initial and entirely understandable moment of disorientation, we established two priorities: to maintain a certain level of productivity and to safeguard our relations with employees. Our entire workforce came out in support of the company, backing all our decisions and demonstrating a deep sense of loyalty,” said Chairman Rino Bedeschi, representing the fourth generation of the family at the helm of the Padua-based group. “Moreover, we firmly believe that our success is due to our people: our employees, customers,

“Despite the slowdown and the uncertain medium to longterm outlook, we are convinced that this crisis will prove to be an opportunity,” continued Rino Bedeschi with evident optimism. “The construction industry will regain momentum, not just due to the growing awareness of environmental issues but also due to changes in the way people think about their homes following the lockdown. Our living spaces have become a kind of “fortress”, fuelling a desire for larger and more comfortable spaces coupled with a greater focus on the environment (green areas, sustainable materials, energy saving, etc.), a trend that in turn is driven by public and private incentives.”

“Pur avendo registrato un certo rallentamento e guardando all’incertezza del medio/lungo termine, siamo convinti che questa crisi si trasformerà in opportunità” ha aggiunto ottimisticamente Rino Bedeschi.

“L’industria delle costruzioni riprenderà con più forza e non solo alla luce della forte consapevolezza sui temi ambientali, ma anche per il mutato concetto di casa indotto dal lockdown. Lo spazio abitativo è infatti diventato una sorta di “fortezza” e dunque ne uscirà trasformato in termini di spazi, sicuramente più ampi e orientati a un maggior comfort abitativo in chiave green (aree verdi, materiali sostenibili, risparmio energetico), grazie anche all’azione push degli incentivi pubblici e privati in materia.

“Tutela ambientale, efficientamento energetico e prevenzione dell’inquinamento diventeranno temi ancora più sentiti ed è su questo versante che ci stiamo concentrando per i nostri prossimi sviluppi tecnologi-

ci” - ha detto Vladimir Grubacic, General Manager della BU laterizi. “La sensibilità verso un modello di costruzione sostenibile sarà ancora più accentuata e, in quest’ottica, il laterizio rimarrà il numero uno tra i materiali da costruzione”.

Una consapevolezza che Bedeschi ha già acquisito da tempo. L’attenzione ai materiali eco compatibili, ad esempio, ha spinto l’azienda a sviluppare negli ultimi anni una linea completa di riempimento mattoni con lana minerale granulata, capace di garantire ottime prestazioni di isolamento termico. Una soluzione meno costosa e con spessori ridotti rispetto ai tradizionali cappotti termici che implicavano una riduzione certa degli spazi abitativi. Se a questo si aggiungono anche i minori costi di trasporto, i nuovi materiali presentano oggettivamente una marcia in più.

Sullo stesso file rouge anche la realizzazione di una linea per la produzione di muri prefabbricati, trasportati e montati direttamente in loco, che rispondono a standard molto elevati di isolamento termico, ma che soprattutto garantiscono grandi risparmi in termini di tempi e costi. Secondo Grubacic, “uno degli effetti post covid in ambito di costruzioni, sarà la necessità di ricorrere sempre più spesso a forme di pre-montaggio, dato che le misure di distanziamento sociale dilatano i tempi facendo lievitare i costi di manodopera in cantiere”. ❱ Le sinergie tra green e 4.0 nella nuova SV3000 Dal punto di vista dell’ottimizzazione del consumo energetico, nell’ottica di fornire ai clienti del comparto tegole soluzioni efficienti e innovative, Bedeschi ha sviluppato macchine ad alto contenuto tecnologico che rispettano i severi standard richiesti in termini di capacità e qualità, compatibili con l’Industry 4.0. Tra queste, la nuova li-

This solution is less expensive and occupies smaller thicknesses than traditional insulated cladding systems, which resulted in a certain reduction in living space. Factoring in the lower transport costs, the new materials offer clear benefits.

Another example is the construction of a line for the production of prefabricated walls, which are subsequently transported and assembled directly on site. These solutions meet very high thermal insulation standards, but above all guarantee exceptional savings in terms of time and costs. Grubacic comments: “One of the post-Covid effects in the construction sector will be the increasingly frequent need for pre-assembled solutions, given that social distancing measures result in longer timeframes and consequently higher on-site labour costs.” ❱ The new SV3000 combines green and Industry 4.0 technologies To offer roof tile sector customers efficient and innovative solutions for optimising energy consumption, Bedeschi has developed hi-tech machines that meet the stringent capacity and quality standards and at the same time are compatible with Industry 4.0 criteria. One of these is the new high-capacity overturning and stainless steel wire binding line for roof and ridge tiles.

The line was designed in response to a specific request from a manufacturer for a machine that, unlike existing equipment, would be capable of handling both roof and ridge tiles. In the past, loading was performed manually, an approach that entailed very high risks in terms of operator safety. A separate line is normally devoted to ridge tiles as special movements are required to stack them in the kiln cars.

La soluzione progettata da Bedeschi prevede un sistema di legatura a doppia bobina con pretensionamento del filo in fase di chiusura e modulazione del serraggio che controlla i giri dell’attorcigliatore.

Un circuito di sensori rileva eventuali anomalie o segnala il momento del cambio “matassa” permettendo all’operatore di intervenire con velocità. Per lo scarico del prodotto cotto è stata studiata una soluzione innovativa che permette di singolarizzare le tegole in automatico, così da ridurre il lavoro manuale e aumentare la sicurezza degli impianti. A family-run business, Bedeschi was founded in Limena, province of Padua, in 1908.

In the 1950s the group differentiated its operations and branched out from the brick industry, which however has remained one of its main business units to the present day. It entered the cement industry and more generally the handling of bulk materials, exploiting the know-how it had acquired in the treatment of wet and sticky materials such as clay.

The company is currently made up of three BUs: heavy clay, materials handling and container logistics. These BUs have a total workforce of around 300 employees, most of them working at the three Italian branches (two production facilities in Padua and Bergamo and one facility devoted to large-scale plant engineering in Genoa). It has five foreign branches located in Russia, the United States, Morocco, India and Dubai. More than a third of the workforce consists of engineers, who are responsible not only for design, but also for expediting, quality control, field assistance and post service.

Bedeschi’s heavy clay division is able to cover all production phases, from material preparation through to automation, dryers and kilns, without the use of sub-suppliers.

It pursues three goals: product innovation, tailor-made solutions and in-house production of critical components to guarantee high quality standards.

Generalmente il singolarizzatore d’uso comune viene munito di prenditore meccanico che preleva la tegola pinzandola sui fianchi e la deposita sulle cinghie. Tale soluzione però crea svariati problemi di affidabilità nella presa con conseguenti fermi macchina per ripristinare le condizioni di lavoro.

La nuova SV3000 nasce dalla necessità del cliente di disporre di una macchina semplice e affidabile in grado di prelevare tegole con svariate forme, senza incorrere in fermi di produzione.

L’obiettivo ha indotto Bedeschi a valutare la pinza come punto debole della linea in quanto il materiale da prelevare non è sempre costante nella forma, nelle dimensioni e nella posizione di prelievo.

Partendo da questo presupposto è stato sviluppato un sistema a ventose, unito ad uno studio ottimizzato della camma meccanica che permette una presa ogni 1-2 secondi.

Le ventose garantiscono un’efficienza del 96% sulle prese, abbassano inoltre i tempi di manutenzione e ottimizzano i

technology reel binding system with wire pre-tensioning during the closing phase and adjustment of the torque that controls the winder turns. A circuit of sensors detects malfunctions and indicates the need for a reel change, allowing the operator to intervene rapidly. An innovative solution has been developed for fired product unloading which allows the tiles to be automatically separated so as to reduce manual work and increase the safety of the systems. It consists of the new model SV3000 high-capacity fired roof tile separator, used to transfer the material onto a continuous line for sorting and discarding defective products.

The widely used traditional separator is equipped with a mechanical gripper that picks up tiles by clamping them on their sides and then deposits them on the belts.

However, this solution is prone to reliability issues during the gripping stage, resulting in the need for machine stoppages to restore operating conditions.

The new SV3000 was designed to meet the customer’s need for a simple and reliable machine capable of picking up roof tiles in a variety of shapes without causing production stoppages.

Bedeschi identified the gripper as the weak point of the line due to the fact that the product to be picked up does not always have the same shape, dimensions or position. Based on this assumption, Bedeschi developed a suction cup system coupled with an optimised mechanical cam design that allows for a pick-up every 1.2 seconds.

The suction cups guarantee a 96% pick-up efficiency, thereby reducing maintenance and optimising production time.

The vacuum circuit has been redesigned to guarantee pick-up repeatability within the set times while safeguarding the lifetime of the pump and other components.

The new cam geometry ensures a very gentle approach movement during pick-up to avoid impacts between the machine and the product and maintain product integrity and aesthetics.

After undergoing visual and acoustic checks, the tiles are stacked in bundles, strapped and arranged in rows ready to be palletised by an anthropomorphic robot designed to grip the wooden pallet, the layers of tiles, the vertical interleaf between the two rows and the horizontal interleaf between the layers. The resultant pack is then shrink wrapped before being picked up by the forklift truck for transport to the storage yard.

The SV3000 stands out for its proven efficiency, and its success is demonstrated by the five installations that have been completed in the last 10 months at the facilities of leading roof tile manufacturers. ❱ Off-site construction and digitalisation: the future that awaits us “We are certain that the future will bring further digitalisation to the construction industry. BIM technologies, 4D and 5D simulations and project progress tracking will lay the foundations for a new approach to building,” concludes Rino Bedeschi.

“In the post-Covid period we will see growth in off-site construction, i.e. the construction of building elements at a different location ready to be assembled onsite at a later date.”

Dopo aver superato un controllo visivo e acustico, le tegole vengono impilate in mazzette, reggiate e predisposte in file pronte per essere pallettizzate da un robot antropomorfo adibito alla presa del pallet in legno, degli strati di tegole, dell’interfalda verticale tra le due file e dell’interfalda orizzontale tra gli strati.

Il pacco così composto passa poi all’imballaggio con cappuccio termoretraibile prima di essere preso in carico dal carrello ele-

vatore per la messa a piazzale.

L’efficienza della SV3000 è comprovata e il suo successo trova riscontro nelle cinque installazioni avvenute nell’arco degli ultimi 10 mesi presso primari produttori di tegole. ❱ Edilizia off-site e digitalizzazione: il futuro che ci aspetta “Crediamo che il futuro riserverà sicuramente maggiore digitalizzazione al settore delle costruzioni. Il ricorso a tecnologie BIM, simulazioni 4D e 5D, tracciamento degli stati di avanzamento dei progetti saranno alla base di un nuovo modo di costruire” – conclude Rino Bedeschi. “E ora, nel post Covid-19, prenderà sempre più piede l’edilizia off-site, ovvero la costruzione degli elementi di un edificio in un luogo differente da quello del progetto, per poi essere composto in un secondo momento.

Almost all of these products are composed mainly of semi-refractory clays. These are mixed with a high proportion of lean and inert pulverised materials such as chamotte (grog) to minimise shrinkage issues and shorten drying and firing cycles. ❱ Fine grinding: the key to the production process It is important to note that for all these end products, the quality of the finished pieces is strongly dependent on proper preparation of the raw materials. Verdés technology offers a choice of various dry and semi-wet methods: • Dry method of clay preparation: After primary crushing, a hammer mill can be used to obtain a particle size of between 0.2 and 0.7 mm diameter, with or without screens after it. secondary crushing, two Optima roller mills are installed for high-pressure grinding by lamination: the first with a 1-1.2 mm gap between shells and the second with a gap of 0.5-0.7 mm.

Once these materials have been perfectly mixed and homogenised, they are shaped by means of flat extrusion in an Exacta extruder, a new specific line of Verdés extruders which are fully digitalised and capable of extruding at 50 bar. ❱ Preliminary raw materials testing Verdés laboratory facilities have all the equipment necessary to enable customers to perform grinding tests on their clays, including a disintegrator, roller mill, hammer mill, pendular mill and mixer.

An in-house designed laboratory extruder is also available to allow for shaping processes with a pressure of up to 50 bar. Naturally, the laboratory also has all the necessary equipment for inspection, measurement and testing from raw to fired.

These services enable producers to select the most suitable grinding and extrusion processes, with the benefit of knowing in advance the performance and quality of the finished product when operating on an industrial scale.

In recent years, technological innovations in the field of brick tile presses and accessories have brought about major transformations in production processes. The machines have improved in terms of their efficiency, performance and integration, resulting in greater productivity and higher quality products. The focus on energy saving has also fuelled the development of sustainable technologies with a smaller environmental footprint and lower production costs. ❱ Precise, quiet and sustainable: the new solutions from Rieter Morando Rieter Morando has always been a pioneer of cutting-edge technology and recently improved its DTP range of turntable presses for accessories by introducing new drive solutions.

The innovations are also designed to be fully compatible with previous generation DTP models, a benchmark for over 40 years. ❱ Continued operations during the Covid-19 emergency Despite the difficult period caused by the health emergency and the consequent restrictions on normal business activities and travel, Rieter Morando’s sales operations were only minimally impacted thanks to its focus on remote technical and sales support. The company actually increased the number of its customers by securing two new major contracts, one for a shaping line equipped with a drum press for roof tiles with 4 or 5 DR6\2400 moulds and the other for a DTP\160 press for accessories which will be installed in Northern Europe. The new technical features introduced on both machines improve their performance and flexibility. As for the DTP press models, the main innovative features were already discussed in the previous paragraph, while for the DR6\2400 drum presses, already a benchmark model on the market, the most important feature is the suction head control system, a device that guarantees reliability and precision in correcting for differences in tile positioning from the drum to the setting platform.

This confirms the high quality, efficiency and competitiveness of the Rieter Morando range and offers a further incentive to continue to invest in research & development of increasingly high-performance and customised solutions.

Per le presse a tamburo DR6\2400, modello già di riferimento sul mercato, è il sistema di comando sbavatori a conferirne la peculiarità principale, dispositivo che garantisce affidabilità e precisione nel superare le differenze di posizionamento delle tegole dal tamburo al pianale di posa.

High standards of automation and control are becoming increasingly important on decoration lines to minimise defects due to operator errors. Colour consistency in particular can be guaranteed through strict control of the basic colour during application.

Until now this was done using empirical methods, often based solely on the experience and manual skill of the line operators. To overcome these problems, Smac has launched a complete new range of devices designed to automatically prepare and control water-based ceramic suspensions (glazes and engobes) that need to be diluted and brought to a specific density before being used in a glazing machine.

Grazie al controllo elettronico a ciclo continuo con ricircolo automatico, la densità impostata viene mantenuta sempre costante e può essere inoltre monitorata la viscosità del prodotto finale.

La macchina è in grado di controllare il dosaggio e l’alimentazione di additivi chimici o basi coloranti, è dotata di controllo elettronico con PLC e touch-screen a colori ed è progettata per adattarsi all’attuale configurazione della linea di smaltatura senza la necessità di attrezzature aggiuntive.

Principi di funzionamento All’avvio del ciclo, la macchina provvede a riempire il mastello a cui è connessa con lo smalto da diluire, prelevandolo dalla cisterna di stoccaggio mediante apposito comando.

Al termine della procedura, il sistema inizia ad aggiungere gli eventuali additivi necessari e a diluire il prodotto con acqua mediante opportuni cicli di aggiunta/miscelazione, fino al raggiungimento della densità impostata dall’operatore.

and improved safety as personnel no longer have to come into direct contact with glazes or other potentially harmful products. ❱ D-GLAZE Ideal for complete automation of glaze preparation and feeding, D-GLAZE automatically prepares glazes according to the set formulations and ensures that the desired quantity of product is available at all times. Thanks to the continuous-cycle electronic control with automatic recirculation, it keeps the density constant and can also monitor the viscosity of the finished product. The machine is able to control the dosing and feeding of chemical additives or colouring bases and is equipped with electronic control with a PLC and colour touch-screen. Moreover, it is designed to adapt to the current configuration of the glazing line without the need for additional equipment.

Operating principles At the beginning of the cycle, the machine fills the connected tank with the glaze requiring dilution, taking it from the storage container by means of a dedicated command. At the end of the procedure, the system begins introducing any necessary additives and diluting the product with water by means of dedicated addition/mixing cycles until the density set by the operator is reached. The product is now ready to be sent to the user machine’s feeding tank, where a level probe monitors the quantity of product contained (if it falls below the minimum level, D-GLAZE automatically supplies glaze with the correct density and viscosity until the maximum set quantity is reached). The glaze inside the tank is kept constantly under control by the electronic densimeter and suitably corrected if the density falls outside the set tolerance range. The cycle continues this way until the tank is completely emptied, then restarts from the beginning after performing an automatic washing cycle of all components.

The viscosity can also be monitored throughout the cycle.

Audible and visual alarms are given in the event of errors.

A splash of brick red colour in Zhujiang New Town La Zhujiang New Town si colora di rosso mattone

Below the dense cluster of shimmering glass towers that define Guangzhou’s booming Zhujiang New Town, the most modern and futuristic neighbourhood of the metropolis, the red bricks of the JPG coffee & LAB burger mark a small corner of tradition that contrasts sharply with the surrounding skyscrapers and buildings with their bold architectural forms.

The mini takeaway restaurant has a total floor space of just 38 square metres without access for customers. Raw, unpolished and slightly irregular, the extruded brick wall fronting the takeaway stands out from the modern urban context for its extreme minimalism. The storefront was designed by Guangzhou-based architecture practice Geom Design, which chose brick not just for its timeless aesthetics but also for the eco-friendly nature of clay. The handmade kiln-fired bricks are stacked without the use of visible mortar and are designed to be easily crushed and recycled in the future to make new materials with major environmental benefits.

Protruding from this façade is a pair of black walk-up service counters framed in black aluminium, one for coffee and the other for burgers. The two elements together create a sense of depth and introspection within the cacophony of the city, while the sleek elegance of the aluminium contrasts pleasantly with the vibrant red of the brick.

Sotto il denso grappolo di torri in vetro luccicante che caratterizza la fiorente Zhujiang New Town di Guangzhou, la parte più moderna e futuristica di Canton, i mattoni rossi del JPG coffee & LAB burger creano un piccolo angolo di tradizione e un elemento di rottura con grattacieli ed edifici dalle forme architettoniche audaci.

Il mini ristorante da asporto ha una superficie complessiva di soli 38 mq a cui però il cliente non ha accesso. Una facciata esterna rivestita di mattoni in laterizio estrusi, grezzi e leggermente irregolari, funge da take away, in controtendenza col moderno contesto urbano per il suo estremo minimalismo. A progettarlo è stato lo studio di architettura Geom Design, di Guangzhou, che ha

scelto il laterizio non solo per le sue intramontabili qualità estetiche, ma anche per l’alta componente ecologica insita nell’argilla. I mattoni, realizzati a mano, sottoposti a un processo di cottura in forno e incastonati senza l’utilizzo di calce visibile, potranno essere in futuro facilmente frantumati e riciclati per produrre nuovi materiali, con grandi benefici in termini ambientali.

Dalla facciata sporgono una coppia di banconi neri con cornici in alluminio lucido dello stesso colore, uno per l’asporto di caffè, l’altro riservato agli hamburger.
