25 VOICES. One Story. The story of CJHS/RZJHS is best told by the people who have lived it. Throughout this issue, 25 members of our community reflect on the experiences, relationships, and moments that have shaped our first 25 years.

Mark & Sandy Levin, Pioneer Parents

“ Being pioneer parents of our Jewish community high school in 2001

was both exciting and deeply rewarding. We were proud to help build a school rooted in Jewish values, academic excellence, and a strong sense of community. Committed to its success, we helped establish traditions that we hope are still embodied and continue today. Most importantly, our four children benefited tremendously, developing a lifelong love of learning and a strong Jewish identity that will guide them and inspire future generations. ”

Alan Frankel, Pioneer Parent and Board President 2017-2019

“ I enrolled Zach, the first of our five CJHS graduates, when the school

consisted of an artist’s rendition of a temporary facility being constructed in Morton Grove. To say that Zach was less than convinced would be an understatement. Yet, given the choice for the next year, Zach elected to stay. It gives me enormous satisfaction to see Zach now in his roles not only as an RZ parent but also as a member of the Board of Directors, ensuring the success of the school for generations to come. ”

Karen Budin, RZ@25 Event Co-Chair

“ RZ has always been more than a school to our family—it is a community

that helped shape our children and created lifelong friendships and values that continue to guide us. Celebrating 25 years is a wonderful opportunity to honor the past, invest in the future, and ensure that generations to come experience the same sense of community, Jewish identity, and excellence that has meant so much to us. ”

Lisa Levitas, RZ@25 Event Co-Chair

“ While my children have graduated, my commitment to Rochelle Zell has

not. The school shaped our family in meaningful ways and I feel privileged to help ensure that future students experience the same sense of learning, belonging and Jewish community. ”

25TH ANNIVERSARY MESSAGE From Our Head of School As Rochelle Zell Jewish High School marks its 25th anniversary, we celebrate not only a milestone in the life of our school, but also the remarkable journeys of the students, families, and staff who have shaped our community over the past quarter century. Jewish education at Rochelle Zell flourishes when diverse individuals come together in a spirit of curiosity, openness, and genuine relationship. Our students come to us from many different backgrounds and experiences. Some come from Jewish day schools, others from public and independent schools. They bring with them varying levels of religious observance, different perspectives, and unique stories. What has always distinguished Rochelle Zell is not simply the diversity of those who walk through our doors, but the personal relationships and community they create once they are here.

Tony Frank

Our recently graduated Class of 2026, one of our most diverse classes to date, demonstrated how such a community is built – through dialogue, mutual respect, and a willingness to learn from one another. They discovered at Rochelle Zell a place where they could grow intellectually, morally, and spiritually – a place where they were encouraged to ask difficult questions, engage thoughtfully with complexity, and develop their beliefs, values, and authentic Jewish identities. In a world often marked by polarization and certainty, our students learn to confidently embrace nuance and to recognize that meaningful relationships are forged not by insisting on uniformity, but by remaining open to multiple perspectives and competing truths. As we reflect on twenty-five years of Rochelle Zell Jewish High School, we do so with pride and gratitude. Our story is part of the larger, centuries-old narrative of the Jewish people, grounded in learning and traditions that have sustained generations. Yet our students do not merely inherit the wisdom of others – they cultivate their own wisdom. For twenty-five years, Rochelle Zell has empowered students to create their own personal blueprints for living Judaism and becoming responsible and involved citizens in the modern world. Our most recent graduates—and the generations who preceded them—fill us with confidence that that the continuing story of our people will be significantly shaped by these graduates and alumni whose identities are grounded in Jewish learning and traditions, strengthened by relationships, and inspired by a deep sense of purpose. As we celebrate this anniversary year, we honor our past while looking ahead to the next chapter of our school’s story with optimism and hope, grateful for the extraordinary community that continues to define Rochelle Zell, and eager for all that lies ahead. With best wishes for the 5787 New Year,

Tony Frank Head of School

HONORING 25 YEARS A Message From The Outgoing President As I pass the gavel, I find myself reflecting on the past 25 years and feeling grateful to have been part of the RZJHS story since its earliest days. Serving as Board President has been a privilege.

Reuben Warshawsky carrying the CJHS/RZJHS Torah to the Deerfield campus

My wife, Tami, and I became CJHS parents in 2004 when our older son enrolled at Chicagoland Jewish High School, as it was then known. Many classes were held in trailers, yet you could feel the magic from the moment you walked through the doors. The education was exceptional, the community was welcoming, and it quickly became clear that this school was something special.

As a parent, volunteer, Board member, and later Board President, I have had the opportunity to watch RZJHS grow while remaining true to its mission. That consistency is what has always inspired my confidence in the school. Serving alongside dedicated volunteers and school leadership has only strengthened my belief that our greatest investment has always been in our people. Their passion, commitment, and shared sense of purpose continue to shape the experience of every student who walks through our doors. RZJHS does more than prepare students for college. It prepares them to live as proud Jews in the modern world, grounded in their values and ready to lead with confidence and purpose. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has helped shape this remarkable community, our founders, past and present Board members, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and supporters. Together, you have built a school that will continue to inspire generations of students for years to come. Go Tigers!

Larry Adler, Founding President

“ The dream for the school began when my daughter, Mia, a Schechter graduate, asked me if there would be a Jewish high school by the time her oldest son, who was six months old at the time, was ready for high school. The dream was born from the idea of a school that would teach Jewish morals, values, and ethics in a modern society. With the help of many dedicated people and an outstanding founding Head of School, Roz Stein, that dream became a reality. ”

BUILDING THE NEXT 25 A Message From The Incoming President As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, I am continuously impressed that the core values that defined our school at its inception remain our guiding beacon. Then and now, we aim to educate and inspire young adults to become the next generation of Jewish leaders. As we look around at the incredible legacy we have created, it is clear we have achieved —and continue to achieve — that. Our next 25 years hold boundless potential. We are doubling down on our efforts to build community – enhancing engagement with our young alumni, Meredith Grossman Anders and increasing programing opportunities for current parents and alumni parents, her children Emma (RZJHS ‘28), Mollie, and Nate (RZJHS ‘25) and broadening our outreach to grandparents and community members. We want everyone to understand and appreciate what an RZJHS education is about – and how very special our community is. We have launched RZ@25, a $10 million capital campaign focused on investing in our faculty and expanding our affordability program. We are aware that the true magic of our school has never been just the bricks and mortar. It is the spirit of curiosity, resilience and community combined with a passion for Judaism and a love of Israel that defines our students and faculty. This spirit is what will carry us forward. Our students are growing up in a world that is in flux and a climate of antisemitism we never could have imagined would be possible in 2026. RZJHS is uniquely positioned to meet the demands of our ever-changing world. We aren’t just preparing students to face the future – we are empowering them to shape it. I am grateful to everyone who has been a part of our story so far. Together, let’s step boldly into the next chapter, confident that our brightest days are ahead of us. No matter how you have been connected to RZJHS in the past, I hope you will join me at this critical moment in our school’s history to celebrate all that we are and all that we will become. Kadima! Onward!

allowed me to continue doing what I loved while becoming part of an extraordinary community. Chaperoning trips to Washington and Israel, engaging more deeply with students, and sharing meaningful Jewish experiences with colleagues made those years especially rewarding. 25 Years of Vision Twenty-five years ago, a group of parents, educators, rabbis, and community leaders came together around a shared belief: Jewish teens deserved a high school experience that combined academic excellence, meaningful Jewish engagement, and a strong sense of community. The school’s earliest students and families helped transform that vision into reality. Together, they established the culture, traditions, and values that continue to define the school today. Through every stage of growth, one thing remained unchanged: students have always been at the center. Every program, tradition, and investment has been guided by a commitment to helping students learn deeply, lead confidently, and develop a lifelong connection to Jewish life. More than 850 alumni now carry the values and experiences of RZJHS into universities, careers, Jewish communities, and families of their own. What began as a shared vision has become a thriving community that continues to strengthen Jewish life in Chicago and beyond.

From Morton Grove to Deerfield RZJHS began in rented space at Northwest Suburban Synagogue in Morton Grove, where the school’s earliest students helped establish the culture, traditions, and sense of community that continue to define the school today. As enrollment grew and the school looked toward the future, the move to Deerfield created new opportunities for learning, gathering, and growth. Expanded facilities supported a broader student experience while preserving the close-knit community that had defined the school from the beginning.

“ The learning at CJHS was authentic; the teachers genuinely wanted

every student to learn, and the community was authentic too. Years later, when I was hiring for a position and was unsatisfied with the candidates, I found myself thinking, ‘I need someone who has critical thinking skills like a CJHS alum would.’ In the end, I hired a CJHS graduate. A great education is more than content mastery. Ultimately, the school’s holistic education graduates young adults who can learn and do anything at a high level. ”

From CJHS to RZJHS The name Chicagoland Jewish High School reflected the school’s founding purpose: serving Jewish families throughout the Chicago area. In 2016, the school became Rochelle Zell Jewish High School, honoring Rochelle Zell z”l and the transformational support of the Zell Family Foundation. The naming of the school marked an important milestone in its history. Whether they graduated from CJHS or RZJHS, alumni share the same foundation: meaningful relationships, academic rigor, Jewish values, and a community that continues long after graduation.

Elli Cohn, CJHS ‘07 Zurich, Switzerland

“ I remember sitting with my classmates, huddled together studying for our Talmud

exams. My love of Jewish learning started in those worn hallways, and it continues to this day. Knowing how to think and ask good questions served me well in college, in graduate school, and beyond. ”

25 Years of Students at the Center Since the first day of school, students have been at the center of every decision made at CJHS/RZJHS. Every class, club, leadership opportunity, Israel experience, athletic team, artistic performance, and tradition exists to help students discover who they are and who they can become. Students are challenged academically, supported personally, and encouraged to contribute meaningfully to their communities. In 2001, this was the case, as it is for our current students today.

The Tallit Comes Home When CJHS moved from Northwest Suburban Jewish Congregation in Morton Grove to its new Deerfield campus in 2007, the school left behind a gift. An oversized tallit embroidered with the words, “Thank you for helping us grow,” honored the congregation that welcomed the school’s first students and helped launch its journey. Years later, after NSJC closed its doors, the tallit found its way back to RZJHS. Over the past year, each week, the student delivering the d’var Torah wears the tallit, connecting the next generation of students to the school’s earliest beginnings.

This tallit connects today’s students to the school’s earliest beginnings.

What was once a symbol of gratitude has become a symbol of continuity, linking the place where the school started to the students who carry its legacy forward today.

Brooke Goldberg, RZJHS ‘26, Va’ad HaStudentim President, 2025-2026 Glencoe, IL

“ As a student leader at RZ, I learned that leadership is less about having a title and

more about showing up for others. Through Student Council, Student Ambassadors, and community service projects, I had the chance to support my peers and help create a welcoming environment where people felt seen and appreciated. These experiences helped me grow in confidence, lead with empathy, build meaningful relationships, and make a positive impact on the community. ”

Simone Merchant, RZJHS ‘26, Model United Nations Co-President, 2025-2026 West Chicago, IL

“ When I look back on my time at RZJHS, it all feels connected: the noise in the

hallways, the laughter between classes, the energy in every room, and the everyday moments that filled the school. None of it stands alone. It all comes from people fully engaged with what they are learning and the world around them. Being here has shown me that learning is not something quiet or separate, but something that fills a space, shaped by overlapping moments of curiosity, effort, and attention. ”

25 Years of Learning That Lasts For 25 years, CJHS/RZJHS has challenged students to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage deeply with the world around them. Our dual curriculum encourages students to make meaningful connections across disciplines while developing intellectual curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning. Faculty do more than teach. They mentor, inspire, and help students discover purpose, preparing graduates for success in college and beyond. Faculty then

How Learning Has Evolved Connecting Ideas Across Disciplines One of the hallmarks of the senior experience is the interdisciplinary partnership between Modern Jewish Thought and English Literature. Developed by former English Department Chair Dale Griffith and former Director of Jewish Studies Dr. Rebecca Schorsch, this signature course invites students to explore timeless Jewish philosophical texts alongside classic literature, creating an intellectually rigorous experience that is uniquely RZJHS.

Learning Beyond the Classroom Students continue to apply their learning through programs including Model United Nations, Debate, and the Hadar Maimonides Moot Court Competition. Whether representing countries on the global stage, debating contemporary issues, or applying Jewish legal reasoning to modern ethical questions, students strengthen their research, writing, collaboration, and public speaking skills while tackling real-world challenges.

Expanding Opportunities Innovative electives continue to broaden the student experience. For example, in Culinary Arts, students explore food science, nutrition, recipe development, and kashrut while developing practical culinary skills. Each semester concludes with alumni returning to campus to taste and judge students’ final creations, connecting classroom learning with the broader RZJHS community.

25 Years of Jewish Growth Jewish life is woven throughout the RZJHS experience. Through Jewish studies, tefillah, Shabbatonim, Israel experiences, service learning, and community, students develop a strong and lasting Jewish identity. The goal is not simply to teach Judaism. It is to help students live it. This year, students engaged deeply with Jewish texts and ideas through discussion, debate, and creative expression. In hevruta learning and collaborative classroom dialogue, they learned to listen carefully, challenge one another respectfully, and refine their thinking. Freshmen explored questions of leadership, power, and responsibility through spirited debates on the biblical story of David and Batsheva. Juniors examined the story of Kayin and Hevel through Jewish commentary, culminating in original poetry that wrestled with themes of conflict, morality, and human responsibility.

I am so grateful for the guidance the RZ athletics program has given me because they have prepared for college and adulthood while providing me with invaluable experiences and relationships. ”

25 Years of Community For 25 years, parents, grandparents, alumni, and volunteers have helped shape the RZJHS experience. Their leadership, generosity, and involvement strengthen our students, support our faculty, and build the community that defines our school. Parent Organization

Grandparents & Special Friends

Led by Co-Presidents Orete Harkavy and Orit Groag-Blavvise, the Parent Organization brought energy to campus throughout the year through student celebrations, faculty appreciation, school traditions, and opportunities for parents and parents of alumni to connect.

Grandparents and special friends joined students throughout the year for tefillah, meals, tours, and classroom experiences that celebrated the relationships at the heart of RZJHS.

Tiger Tuesday Tiger Tuesday united the RZJHS community around giving back and giving forward. Students supported The Ark through a schoolwide food drive while families helped strengthen the Annual Campaign.

We are grateful to Angie and Larry Adler, founders and co-chairs of the Grandparents and Special Friends Association, for their leadership and vision.

Lifelong Learning As part of RZJHS’s 25th anniversary, alumni, parents, and community members led a series of adult education programs that explored Jewish identity, resilience, art, storytelling, and community. Presenters included Rabbi Benjy Forester (CJHS ‘12), Jacqueline Kott-Wolle (parent of Alumni), Dr. Sara Labaton, and Ari Berkowicz (CJHS ‘05). Grandparents and

25 Years and Over 850 Stories to Tell... The true measure of a school is found in its graduates. CJHS/RZJHS alumni lead in Jewish communal organizations, education, medicine, law, business, technology, and countless other fields. They carry forward the values, relationships, and experiences developed during their years at RZJHS.

Pack the Place Brings the Community Together RZJHS was full of energy in the days before Thanksgiving as students, parents, alumni, grandparents, and future Tigers came together for our annual Pack the Place celebration. Alumni returned to campus to reconnect with classmates and faculty, share breakfast with students, and cheer on the Tigers alongside the broader school community. This year also featured a new program for families with young children. Future Tigers and their families enjoyed a pizza party, RZJHS swag, and a chance to experience the excitement of school spirit before joining the crowd for the early basketball game. The evening culminated in a standing-room-only gym, with community members of all ages filling the bleachers to support our student-athletes.

...Our Alumni Community Matthew Silverman, CJHS ‘07 Tel Aviv, Israel

“ My time at CJHS provided an important foundation for who I am today. As a

student during the school’s founding years, I experienced firsthand what it means to help build a community, even during our four years in the cramped hallways of the Morton Grove site. Looking back, I am proud to see how those early seeds have grown into something truly special. ”

Aaron Zell, CJHS ‘13 Chicago, IL

“ The community-oriented atmosphere, the inherent immersion

in Jewish life, the attention and care of my teachers, and the friendships that I made all helped cultivate my own sense of self, that, when paired with an academic education that taught me how to learn and think, cements my time at CJHS as one of the most formative experiences of my life. ”

Owen Stern, RZJHS ‘19 Milwaukee, WI

“ The foundation for the work I do today started at RZJHS. It was where I learned

time management, organization, and how to confidently express my ideas while engaging with different perspectives. I still remember the excitement of running classroom experiments and the camaraderie of competing on the cross country, basketball, and baseball teams. RZJHS will always feel like home. When I come back to visit, it’s always great to experience that same warm welcome.”

Share Your Simchas and Milestones We love celebrating our alumni community. Have you married, welcomed a new baby, started a new job, earned a degree, or reached another meaningful milestone? We also want to know if there is a loss, illness, or other life event that our community should keep in mind. We look forward to featuring alumni updates in future communications and helping our community stay connected. As a special congratulations, alumni who get married or welcome a new baby will receive exclusive CJHS/RZJHS alumni swag. Please share your news with Stephanie Sanderman, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, at ssanderman@rzjhs.org.

25 Years of Generosity

THANK YOU FOR POWERING OUR MISSION Thanks to your generosity, we are proud to share that our community came together to raise over $1.75 million in support of this year’s Annual Campaign. Together, we met and exceeded our goal—and made a difference. Your support fuels the heart of RZJHS. You helped our academic programs grow, our athletics and extracurricular activities thrive, and ensured we could provide enhanced security and our vital Affordability Program. Because of you, every eligible student had the opportunity to access a transformative Jewish high school education, regardless of financial circumstances. Whether you’ve supported us for years or joined our community this year, we are honored to count you among our valued donors. Your belief in the power of Jewish education is what makes our mission possible. Yet, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating our students. With continued support from generous donors and partners like the Jewish United Fund—and from you—we can continue to shape the next generation of leaders: students who think critically, live Jewishly, and engage responsibly with the modern world.

Keep the Momentum Going Your gift makes a lasting impact. To help us meet the ongoing needs of our students and school, please consider making a donation today. For more information, contact Stephanie Sanderman, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, ssanderman@rzjhs.org or 847-324-3720.

Lynn Schrayer and Adam Winick, RZ@25 Campaign Chairs

“ Between our two families, we are proud parents of six Rochelle Zell alumni

ages 21 to 31. We have seen firsthand the lasting impact this school has on students and families. That is why we invest our time and resources in RZJHS. Students are challenged academically and grounded in Jewish values as they become the best versions of themselves. They are inspired every day by exceptional educators who know them as individuals. As we celebrate 25 years, we are deeply committed to helping ensure that future generations have access to this extraordinary high school experience.”

Annual Giving Honor Roll: For 25 years, the Annual Campaign has been the foundation of philanthropy at Rochelle Zell Jewish High School. Year after year, parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends have invested in the people, programs, and experiences that make RZ extraordinary. Their generosity supports every aspect of student life, from academics and Jewish learning to athletics, arts, leadership opportunities, and community building. The donors recognized below demonstrate a shared belief in the power of an RZ education and a commitment to ensuring that today’s students benefit from the same transformative experience that has shaped generations of graduates.
