Deployable Fragments Modular Assemblies Bending active gridshell structures present an opportunity to activate an urban environment. This project explores existing linear assemblies and bending active wood structures; understanding the limits and potential of different fabrication methods. Through extensive material studies, a system of mass production and deployment was developed. Unique, yet modular fragments come together to form a pavilion with a dynamic experience underneath. A single module was developed as a fragment; from the base inserts to the module’s collapsible logic. The prototypes evolved into a staggered linear arrangement by adjusting set pivot points to minimize variability between fragments. With a main axis established, tensile fabric is pinned in place, emphasizing the spatial experience underneath.

Subverting Obedience Honouring and Imposing Play Through numerous programmatic changes, North Lincoln School continues to prioritize youth and adult education. Here, it is revitalized as a youth recreation center. Subverting 20th century spatial forms of obedience, the space creates an environment that imposes a sense of play. The angled ceiling form is translated onto the ground plane, carving a new dynamic and layered experience that is more reflective of a child’s desire to explore.

Pacing in Four Parts Cinema and the System Released in 2003, “Memories of Murder,” directed by Bong Joon-Ho, is South Korean film based on the Hwaseong murders in the late 1980s to early 1990s. After five years of investigation, thousands of suspects, and no resolution to the murders of at least ten women, this period was a marking of trauma in Korean history. Since the 2019 confession, the film has been brought back into circulation, highlighting the generational trauma and the prevalence of this cold case in Korean pop culture. The film follows two lead investigators on the case who have opposing investigation methods informed by social hierarchies in Korean culture. This dichotomy is explicitly supported by the prevailing themes in the film, the pacing of the shots, and the framing of the camera. This study breaks down a scene that serves as a pivotal turning point in the characters’ development. It depicts a shift in tone in the film, as there is a sudden sense of self-awareness between the two main characters. The film becomes less about their “good cop, bad cop” dynamic, and more about the system they represent. Type 18

Deceptive Geometries Exploiting the Proto-Image In his paper titled “Rendering Environment,” Andrew Atwood calls for a closer examination of the image and the digital processes and techniques used to produce images in architecture. Atwood denotes an expanding gap between the architectural object and its image, as “images are produced as abstractions of abstractions,” and thus, moving further away from their “original” source. He breaks down the digital image into four categories by their processes: the proto-image, paraimage, post-image, and meta-image. Proto-images are often used to refine the object or geometry by subtly adding the appearance of texture. What would happen if we exploit this tool? In order to investigate the impacts of proto-images, form was manipulated through a series of bump maps. As a result, this visual geometric abstraction creates illusions of false geometry. Type

Push Pull Designing for Gen-Z Selected for CAED X-Gallery Exhibition Pigment is a paint and coatings manufacturer that values teamwork, collaboration, and not reimagining the workplace for Gen-Z. The design framework is centered around ideas of fluidity, transition, and flow. This hybrid workplace reflects these ideas through blocking that is a departure from the traditional grid. The push and pull relationship between each block creates seamless, yet deliberate neighbourhoods or “zones” that support numerous work types. The space is welcoming and not overwhelming, aimed to support the return to the office. The spatial organization is governed by colour-blocking as a wayfinding technique, visually separating private offices, large collaborative areas, and everything in between.

Notes from A Voyeur Observation and An(notation) In order to study voyeurism in the city, it is important to know who is the subject, or the “voyee.” The following three panels function as a series, abstracting a day trip to Montréal at three different scales. This exercise in spatial analysis and annotation is approached through musical notation and thus, creating a “soundtrack” of the day. This study aims to dissect infrastructure and experience, as governed by personal documentation, observation and narrative. Type

Bloom Modular Shading System The design of this shading system emerges from a rigorous study of the Adaptive Solar Facade at ETH Zürich and Sosolimited’s Diffusion Choir. The system of assembly focuses on its deployability and subsequent hidden mechanics that allow for an open ground plane. Each module actuates through a series of pulleys, pulling away from its resting position towards the user, and allowing the passage of light. Type
