Na meer as 100 jaar vind die 94ste interskole tussen twee topskole in die Karoo, Volkskool en Union High, plaas. Interskole is veel meer as net ‘n wedstryd, dit is ‘n tradisie! Dit is waarlik die heel grootste gebeurtenis op Graaff-Reinet se kalender. Elke leerder, oudskolier en ondersteuner dra by tot die unieke gees van interskole, ‘n tyd waarin lojaliteit, samehorigheid en trots weer bevestig word.
Agter elke speler staan ’n hele gemeenskap – die lojale ondersteuning van ouers wat saam na sportgeleenthede ry, aanmoedig, ondersteun en ontelbare opofferings maak sodat hul kinders hierdie oomblikke ten volle kan beleef. Ons bring hulde aan u.
Aan al die spelers: speel met passie en oorgawe. Gee jou beste en geniet elke oomblik. Aan al ons ondersteuners: julle gee energie en lewe aan die week. Onthou ons leuse vir die jaar: Sterker Saam!
Baie welkom aan al die reüniegroepe. Mag julle die tyd saam met jul alma maters geniet, nuwe herinneringe bou en met trots deelneem aan al ons verrigtinge.
Laastens spreek ons ook ons opregte dank uit aan ons borge, wie se ruim bydraes hierdie geleentheid moontlik maak en die standaard daarvan jaar na jaar verhoog. Julle vennootskap hou hierdie trotse tradisie aan die lewe.

Hoe was die voorseisoen vir hierdie span, en wat het dit vir julle gewys oor die groep se karakter, ingesteldheid en toewyding?
2026 se voorseisoen was hard, met baie lang ure wat ingesit is, maar dit het ons as ’n span nader aan mekaar gebring en van ons ’n familie gemaak. Elke oefening en wedstryd vanjaar het vir ons gewys waar ons sterk punte lê en waaraan ons nog kan werk. 2026 se span is ’n span wat vir mekaar speel en karakter toon.
Wat maak vanjaar se eerstespan anders as vorige spanne, en hoekom moet ondersteuners opgewonde wees om julle hierdie seisoen te sien speel?
Vanjaar se eerstespangroep is dalk nie een van die beste of grootste groepe nie, maar dit is ’n groep wat al ’n lang pad saamstap. Ek dink ondersteuners kan opgewonde wees om te sien waartoe ons as ’n span in staat is. Ons het nie die grootste spelers nie, maar ons het beslis ’n span wat hart wys.
Wat gaan deur jou kop in die oomblikke voordat jy die veld in jou skoolkleure betree, en wat beteken daardie geleentheid vir jou persoonlik?
Nie net vir my nie, maar vir die hele span gaan dit voor ’n wedstryd altyd oor “focus, discipline and communication”. Dit is drie van die hoofpunte wat deur ons koppe gaan. Vir my persoonlik is elke geleentheid om in maroen, wit en swart op die veld te draf ’n eer, want nie almal het so ’n voorreg soos ons nie.
Elke sterk span het sy eie identiteit – hoe sal jy julle span se speelstyl, ingesteldheid en gees beskryf?
Ons is ’n span wat hard werk en nie opgee nie. Ons hou aan veg tot die einde en bly altyd positief, selfs wanneer dinge moeilik raak. Ons span se gees is beslis een van die bestes. Ons probeer altyd glimlag en, ongeag wat gebeur, bou ons mekaar op.
Watter standaard het jy en jou span vir julleself hierdie seisoen gestel, buiten net om wedstryde te wen?
Ons span se doel is om altyd nederig te bly en hard te werk. Ons raak nooit grootkop nie, al weet ons ons gaan wen. Ons doel is ook om elke wedstryd te geniet en met trots te speel.
Watter wedstryd staan vir jou die meeste uit op die kalender, en wat maak daardie wedstryd so belangrik vir die span?
Soos almal weet, speel ons deur die jaar baie groot wedstryde, maar Interskole teen Union bly jaarliks die belangrikste. Dit is ’n wedstryd waarin ons nie net vir onsself speel nie, maar ook vir ons afrigter, die skool, ons ouers en al die oudskoliere.
Wie in hierdie span dink jy gaan mense hierdie seisoen verras, en wat maak daardie speler iemand om dop te hou?
Daar is nie een spesifieke speler nie, want ’n span is net so sterk soos sy swakste skakel. Ek dink ons het as ’n span die potensiaal om mense te verras, aangesien elke speler hard werk en sy beste gee. Enigiemand kan dus op die dag uitblink.
Wat leer hierdie sport by jou skool spelers wat verder gaan as net wat op die veld gebeur?
Ek dink ons leer nie net deur die sport nie, maar ook by ons afrigter. Coach Jaco leer ons baie. Ons leer dissipline en uithouvermoë, om nooit op te gee nie en om weer op te staan en aan te hou werk, selfs wanneer ons moeg is.
As kaptein, watter tipe leier wil jy hierdie seisoen vir jou span wees, en watter voorbeeld wil jy stel?
Ek wil ’n trotse kaptein wees. Ek wil die soort kaptein wees van wie mense oor tien jaar nog sal sê: “Hy het sy span goed gelei.” Ek wil ’n kaptein wees wat onthou sal word.

CAPTAIN OF UNION HIGH SCHOOL FIRST RUGBY TEAM

What has pre-season been like for this team, and what has it revealed about the character, attitude, and commitment of the squad? Pre-season was a good experience, filled with challenges and major positives. It revealed that the boys were willing to sacrifice and work hard, not only for themselves but for the team too. It also showed that the boys were committed to the process of building this special season.
What makes this year’s first team different from previous teams, and why should supporters be excited to watch you play this season? The thing that sets this group of boys apart is our grit and never-give-up attitude and the bond goes far deeper than just a rugby team. We have put an immense amount of time and effort into this season, with the help of our coaches, to produce a good brand of rugby that’s enjoyable for all spectators.
What goes through your mind in the moments before you step onto the court or field wearing your school colours, and what does that opportunity mean to you personally?
I think of all the people who have sacrificed for me to be in the position I am in and how blessed and grateful I am to get to play the sport I love with my brothers. I also remind myself that we are playing for a bigger cause and that we are following in the footsteps of the men who have worn the special white jersey before us. It is a special opportunity for me because I’ve always dreamed of playing 1st XV at Union and now I get to live out that dream and follow in the footsteps of the men who inspired not only me but my teammates too. It is something I never take for granted and I cherish every moment in the white jersey. There’s no better feeling than pulling on that jersey and getting to represent your school.
Every strong team has its own identity — how would you describe your team’s playing style, attitude, and overall spirit?
I would say our playing style is simple, smart and effective. The team’s attitude is positive and gritty and the boys don’t shy away from hard work and love the game. The spirit is a special one and we’ve built special bonds with one another that will last a lifetime.
What standard have you and your team set for yourselves this season, beyond simply winning matches?
We’ve set a high standard for ourselves and push each other to improve at every practice session and every game. The most important goal we’ve set for ourselves is not only to be good rugby players and a good team, but to be honourable young men who embody the values of being a Unionite.
Which fixture stands out most on the calendar for you, and what makes that match especially important to the team?
I would say Hoër Volkskool because of the history between the two schools. Interschools is a special time of year for everyone and it’s a special experience to be part of.
Who in this squad do you think could surprise people this season, and what makes them a player to watch?
Definitely the vice-captain, Similo Mvandaba. We all know he’s a special talent. He’s just in his own world on the rugby field and you don’t realise how good he is until you play with him. He is made for the big moments and has the ability to change the whole game. He’s a phenomenal leader of young men and he embodies the values on which we have built our team.
What does being part of this sport at your school teach players that goes beyond the game itself?
It teaches us the value of hard work, resilience, respect, teamwork, responsibility, accountability and commitment. These values aren’t just important in sport, but are also key values that we will carry with us as we leave school and build our futures. We are also blessed to have the guidance of our coaches, Mr Sparrius and Mr Siyaya, who have taught us the importance of being good people and honourable young men.
As captain, what kind of leader do you want to be for your team this season, and what example do you hope to set?
I have always prided myself on leading by example and on being not only a good leader on the field, but off it too. I hope I have taught the boys to work hard and to be good teammates, not only in the good times but in the bad too, and to be brave, believe in themselves, and trust in the importance of preparation and one another.
When people watch your team play this year, what do you hope they will say about the group afterwards?
That we played our hearts out and left everything out on that field. Most importantly, we played as a unit.
