DIY KEY FRAME
CHERRY RED
I love it when practical things are also pretty. This month, why not make one of these DIY key frames, as it happens to fit this description very well. THINGS YOU WILL NEED: • A frame you like. It can be any size, but I recommend one with a gap in the centre slightly larger than your keys. • A screwdriver with appropriate size screw. (The box of screw hooks will tell you what size to use.) • Screw hooks.
WHAT TO DO: • Take the frame and plan out where you’d like the hooks to be placed. I decided to use four hooks on my frame. • Once you’re decided, drill the correctly-sized holes into the frame. • After you’ve drilled the holes, screw in each hook. You are now ready to mount the frame on the wall and hang your keys!

SIX HOT HAIRDOS FOR COLD DAYS
Chilly weather getting you down? Hike up the temperature with these gorgeous rainy day dos and we guarantee you won’t be untagging any party pictures of yourself this winter. TWO-TONE TOP KNOT JLaw just knows how to make everything look fab, doesn’t she? Thanks to her, my behind-closed-doors look is now good enough for the red carpet. (Cue: big smile.) Get her look by raking your hair through your fingers and bringing everything together at the crown. Twist into a knot and secure with pins before spritzing with hairspray.
amazing look of Leighton’s. Simply mix Serum and Mousse in your palms and smooth over freshly blow-dried hair.
BRAID ME BEAUTIFUL Fight the frizz with a fancy fishtail this winter. Make like Blake and spritz on some Leave-In Conditioning Spray and braid your hair normally from the crown of your head to the nape of your neck. Divide your hair into two equal parts and braid into a fishtail plait before securing with a clear elastic. This style is especially beautiful when worn with the season’s hottest hair colours. Source: rubybox.co.za
THE SELENA This striking updo has me pining for a rainy day. Get the look by applying a hair mousse to wet hair. Blow dry completely, then curl using a curling cone. Split your hair into three sections: bottom (ear-to-ear), middle (temple-to-temple) and crown (full top). Starting at the bottom, create a ponytail at the nape of the neck and then roll the entire ponytail upwards and pin horizontally, creating a tube effect. Next, roll the middle section horizontally and pin underneath the bottom roll. Lightly tease the top, then roll vertically and pin into the middle roll.
FAUX-BOB WITH A VINTAGE TWIST The asymmetrical bob is back, but you don’t have to chop your locks to pull it off. For Taylors’ faux-bob, us a 1’’ Curling Rod to create loose waves. Spritz your tresses with Leave-In Balm and brush through. At the nape of the neck, tuck the longer strands in and secure with bobby pins.
TURBAN À LA EVA Who knew covering up could look this good? Turn your most striking scarf into a turban by folding it in half lengthwise. Line up the centre of the fold with the base of your head. Pull the ends up towards the front of your head and cross them over each other at the forehead. Wrap them around the back again and tie the ends into a knot. Tuck the loose ends under the back knot, and you’re done. No one needs to know what’s happening underneath. BOBBING BEAUTY My oh my, miss Meester! If you’ve recently chopped your locks, go with this effortlessly

HEALTH
A COLD OR FLU? HERE’S WHAT TO DO
As the nights get colder, the duvets and heaters aren’t the only things being hauled out, as people across the country reach for the tissues to soothe those inevitable winter sniffles. Source: www.health24.com IS IT A COLD SNIFFLE OR A FLU SNIFFLE? AND WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT? TELLING THE DIFFERENCE The perennial confusion between the common cold and influenza is due to the fact that the symptoms are so similar: runny nose, sore throat, fever, and body aches. For the record, colds are caused by viruses, and there are often at least 200 of them circulating during cold and flu season. By contrast, there’s usually only one influenza virus in circulation every year, according to health experts. The best indications that you’re dealing with a cold and not the flu are severity and duration: Colds typically last between three and seven days and generally aren’t very serious. TREATING COLDS AND FLU Dr. Yeong Kwok, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan’s Department of Internal Medicine, says the best treatment for the common cold comes from your grandmother’s book of sound advice: get lots of rest, drink hot liquids, have some chicken soup, gargle with warm salt water, and take over-the-counter cold remedies.“Getting enough rest really does make sense, because we know that stress and a lot of physical activity can depress your immune system,” says Kwok. “So if you do have
an infection, it makes sense that resting and drinking lots of fluids would help your system get better, and prevent it coming down with an additional problem.” Kwok adds that some studies have shown that taking zinc lozenges can reduce the duration of cold symptoms from six to three days. While the evidence isn’t strong, he says it can’t hurt to have a stash of zinc lozenges handy, just to give it a try. If you feel like you have a whopper of a cold, however, and are experiencing serious and longer-lasting symptoms than normal, you’re probably dealing with the flu. A case of the flu can last up to 12 days. And although antibiotics are useless against a cold, they can be effective in treating the flu virus, says Kwok. But they’re only really effective if taken within 48 hours of the appearance of your first symptoms, and are usually prescribed for high-risk cases. That leaves the countless over-the-counter drugs to combat colds and flu. But even the most potent varieties are likely to offer little more than temporary relief, says dr. Larry Fields, a GP. “The over-the-counter medications act to control symptoms so you may feel better, but the course of the illness won’t be shortened.” IS THE FLU SERIOUS? If the treatment for colds and the flu is
typically the same, why is it important to know whether you’ve got one or the other? Because the flu has much greater potential to lead to pneumonia in certain high-risk people, says Kwok. Those people include the elderly, those with chronic conditions (such as diabetes, asthma and chronic bronchitis), and those with auto-immune deficiencies. Pneumonia should be suspected if flu symptoms suddenly worsen, if a fever suddenly spikes higher, or if someone experiences shortness of breath. A healthcare provider should be called immediately if such symptoms develop. “It’s very rare for someone to die from a cold, but the flu and complications from the flu are estimated to cause about 20 000 deaths per year in the United States. So that’s why there’s more concern about the flu,” says Kwok. PREVENTION THE BEST MEDICINE The best way to protect against the flu and pneumonia is to get a flu shot. Although anyone can get one, the American Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the
vaccine to people over 50, those in highrisk groups, women who will be at least three months pregnant during flu season, and those with compromised immune systems. “Anyone in a high-risk group, regardless of their age, should consider getting the vaccine. And anyone who simply doesn’t want to get the flu, should also think about the flu vaccine,” says Kwok. To reduce your risk of contracting colds and the flu even further, there’s always good old hand-washing, says Fields. “Regularly washing your hands is highly important, whether you have a cold or are trying to avoid getting one,” according to Fields. “If you’re the infected person, you also need to make sure to cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze so that you’re not spreading it that way.”

GRADE 7 IEB MATCH ASSESSMENT
We are very excited about a new development in the IEB movement. The Primary School Initiative, or PSI, is a new component of the IEB’s offering to independent schools. For the past 25 years, the IEB has been focused on delivering quality support in assessment practices to independent high schools, but has now extended its range to include IEB primary schools. This initiative will address specific primary school concerns and needs around critical learning and assessment practices enabling primary school teachers to become more informed about local and international trends in teaching and assessment. Part of this new initiative involves a new assessment aimed at Grade 7. MATCH (Measuring Abilities and Thinking Competencies)
is designed to evaluate Grade 7 pupils in terms of the critical knowledge and skills needed for success in high school. It is an interdisciplinary assessment that consists of two papers, one being content-based and the other skills driven. 30 of our Grade 7 pupils took part in the first ever MATCH assessment which was written on 25 May 2015. We are extremely happy with the results! The assessment, written by 3257 pupils from 76 IEB schools (including most of the top schools in South Africa), proved to be a challenge. The standard was high and the children were expected to apply themselves at a whole new level. Glenwood House can be very proud of their results. The overall national average for the assessment was 56,1%.
80% of our children achieved results above the national average. Glenwood House scored an overall average of 62% proving that our children are a cut above the rest. We are extremely proud of four of our pupils who achieved above 80% for the assessment.
They are: • Carla du Plessis – 80% • Matthew van Helsdingen – 84% • Kirsten Barbour – 89% • Adrienne Vercueil – 89% Matthew, Kirsten and Adrienne were placed in the top 3% of the country’s achievers. An outstanding achievement!

RUGBY VS EXCELSIOR
Saturday 25th of July. By the looks of these boys’ faces, they were ready to tackle the bull by its horns - Excelsior’s bull... And that is exactly what they did. On this very cold, rainy day, our rugby boys did us proud with a whopping 21:5. Well done!!!

PREFECTS VISIT VERMONT OLD AGE HOME
The prefects of Knysna Primary spread a little warmth among Vermont Old Age Home as they distributed bed socks which were knitted by the girls as well as other members of the community. The elderly also received a facecloth and soap. The prefects were happy to be able to put a smile on many faces with these gifts.
BIG BANG LEMONADE
Mieke van Eeden, Jayde Stubbs and Sebastian Cory heard about the Google for Entrepreneurs “Lemonade Day”and decided they are going to participate. It involved attending 2 workshops where they were taught the basic principles of a successful business and how to pursue this and were then given the opportunity to trade during the Oyster festival. The 3 of them started preparing way
ahead of the festival to ensure that everything is in place and then went 100% for it. During the 2nd weekend of trading at the festival, Jocelyn Holten also got stuck in and helped them. All this hard work led to them winning the competition and they will be flown to Johannesburg in October to participate in a huge market. Also an Entrepreneurs initiative. Well done guys!
