Ivan Botha and Donnalee Roberts met on the set of 7de Laan in 2009 where they developed their friendship and love for film. They start their own production house,17 FILMS and since then they have been writing and collaborating on films Vir Altyd, Pad na jou hart and Stroomop. This power couple of the entertainment industry got engaged in May 2017 and AWSUM asked them some questions about love, their relationship and the film industry. Please tell our readers about your high school career. Where were you at school and what would you always remember about school? D: I was in Witbank Technical High School. We were six close friends that laughed so much. I: I was at Cornwall Hill College in Irene, I will always remember how fearless one was at school, we were not afraid of the future and adult life. You were best friends before you started going out in November 2016. Can you describe how it feels to fall in love with your best friend? I&D: Like scales falling from your eyes. There is literally nothing better on earth than having to travel with your best friend through life. The movie Stroomop touch on issues like what is expected and not expected from women. Why do you think every woman and man should watch the movie? I&D: Our hope is that everyone who sees it will discover a new kind of spirit within them to swim upstream in a world and society that often expect of us to just go with the flow. We hope that you will be the heroine or hero of your own story. It’s important to know we’re not alone. For every zig there is a zag, can you tell us more about the up’s and downs on set of Stroomop? D: Filming on the Orange River, four weeks away from home was the biggest challenge but it was also the biggest highlight to experience such an indescribably beautiful part of our country in so much depth and nature literally on our skin every day. We all got stronger together - physically and spiritually.

I: The challenges were also the highlights, every challenge we could face as a team. We made a movie on the Orange River, this is a first for South Africa, I appreciate every person for their hard work and passion and for believing in our dream. Favourite movie? D: Forest Gump, Note Book, A Star is Born, Fight Club, Amelie I: Forest Gump, Note Book, A Star is Born, Fight Club, Amelie You’ve made a big name in the film industry, what is next for you two. D: After years of dreaming, my heart wants to burst of excitement, my clothing range are being released in January 2019. The Romantic Collective, it will be available online and consists of three sections. The Romantic Original, which I designed and manufactured locally myself. The Romantic Traveler - items we import from around the world and The Romantic Colab. I: We have a water business called Go Branded Water that keeps us busy and we are also launching new water known in P’n P in 2019 called MyAMANZI (My Water) countrywide. What advice would you give other couples that are working together? D: Remember that you are always a couple first before you are business partners. Your love and friendship come first. I: Balance is important, work hard but make time to leave work at work and focus on your unique love. Learn to speak to each other’s Love Languages.

The recipe’s deliciousness revolves around three quintessential South African ingredients – sweetened condensed milk, Peppermint Crisp chocolate (can be substituted for any

peppermint or mint-flavoured chocolate or sweets) and Tennis

Biscuits, which are delicious, buttery coconut biscuits. Of course,

these yummy ingredients are bound together with lots of melted chocolate, so if you haven’t realised it by now, your diet is pretty much destroyed.

SERVES: 8 to10 TIME UNTIL YOU CAN EAT IT: 30–45 minutes DIFFICULTY LEVEL: dangerously easy • 1 x 200-g packet Tennis Biscuits (or coconut biscuits) • 80 g (80 ml) salted butter, at room temperature • 300 g good-quality dark chocolate, chopped • 200 g (180 ml) sweetened condensed milk • 1 x 150 g Peppermint Crisp bar, chopped • 50 g (250 ml) white mini marshmallows Line a standard loaf tin with a large piece of foil, leaving enough to overhang. Arrange 3 to 4 biscuits in a row down the middle of the tin. In a saucepan, combine the butter, chocolate and condensed milk over a low heat and stir until melted. Allow to cool. In a separate bowl, combine the chopped Peppermint Crisp and the marshmallows. Combine the melted chocolate and condensed milk . mixture with the marshmallow mixture and stir until combined. Spoon the mixture down the centre line of the biscuits. Place three to four biscuits on each side of the tin, then press them into the sides of the chocolate mixture to form a triangle. Seal the foil and place in the fridge to set. Remove the foil and slice into bars. TIP: If making a triangle is too much effort, simply crush the biscuits and mix them in with the marshmallows and the peppermint crisp. Then press the mixture into the lined standard loaf tin and refrigerate until set.

Interhouse Athletics 2019 Interhouse Athletics 2019 revealed lots of athletic and artistic talent. Hundreds of parents joined in the fun and witnessed the four houses’ processions and excellent performances in field and track events. Kudos to the organisers and staff, and the broader Groote Schuur Family. A most memorable day.

New Grade 8’s Grade 4 Outing The Grade 4s went on an outing to the Centre of Conservation Education where they learnt about the history of their school as well as learnt how to build their own museum display.

PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOL (t) 021 531 7410 (e) postmaster@phs.org.za

Grade 8’s waiting for the start of the school day. They do their Orientation regalia - a box displaying their names, and on the inside some interesting snippets of their life story to date. They are wearing colourful plastic bags over those shiny new school shoes to be reminded of the importance of their every step in high school. They are off to a great start.

This month of January sees Ms Helen Unwin celebrate 30 years of unbroken service at The Grove! Ms Unwin has many job titles including Knower of Everything; Fixer of Anything; Most Helpful Person; Hardest Worker; Carer of Everyone; Behind the Scenes Sorter-Outer - the list just goes on and on! Thank you, Helen, for all that you do for us, day in and day out (and even at night). We are so grateful for your commitment to The Grove.

Reading is FUN! What a beautiful morning for a Gr 3 to sit in a tree and read to their Gr 1 partner. These partners stay the same all year, allowing the children to get to know each better while enjoying a story.

The Foundation Phase Sport’s Day

Grade 7 Outdoor Education Camp

The foundation phase sports day was once again a day full of fun. The fields were looking wonderful. Thinking back to 2018’s sport’s day made us grateful for our new grass and astroturf. Each child participated in two races and there were many heart-warming moments when our children assisted each other over the finishing line. Each year we enjoy the courage and spirit in which our children participate. Not only did the children enjoy themselves, so did the parents … and of course, EVERYONE enjoyed the mom’s and dad’s races! The teachers ran a relay against the Grade Threes who were the winners (as usual). Perhaps the highlight of the day was the fun races. The grade ones looked really cute in their hats and tutus, while the grade twos tried very hard to keep those potatoes on their spoons while racing up and down the track. The grade three’s back to back race was run with much hilarity. We are fortunate that we always have the support of many parents. Thank you for joining us! Thank you to everyone who helped with the organisation, making the day a wonderful success.

Our Grade 7’s having a ball of a time beating to the rhythm of the drums.

Welcome to all in 2019 So we survived our first weeks of the new school year. Welcome back everyone. May we continue to turn the ordinary into extra-ordinary blessings. A very warm welcome to the BPS family, Ms Young - Grade 4 Educator; Ms Sinclair - Aftercare; Ms Schafer - Gr 2 Learnership; Mrs Swift - Counseling Dept; Mr Edwards - Grade 4/5 Learnership; Mrs Whyte - Library Assistant & Ms Julius - Groundstaff. SOUTH AFRICAN COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL (t) 021 689 4164 (e) twinek@sacollege.org.za Head prefects Harold van Hoogstraten (1930) was the first ever SACS Head Prefect. He later became a Member of Parliament, representing the United Party. Sid Kiel, excelled as a sportsman at SACS, captaining the First Cricket and Athletics Teams and was also the First Rugby Team’s Vice-Captain. He is the only SACS man to have had the distinction of being Head Prefect twice – 1934 and 1935! While at SACS he became a Springbok hurdler and later represented South Africa at the 1938 Empire Games in Australia. He opened the batting for the senior Western Province Cricket Team, before the Second World War curtailed his career and the likelihood of him becoming a double Springbok in the team led by fellow SACS Old Boy, Jack Cheetham. When the School turns 200 in 2029, SACS will have its 100th Head Prefect – that person is in Grade 3 somewhere at this stage.

Our present Head Prefect, Panashe Delvin Gundani, is Head Prefect number 90!

RONDEBOSCH BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

(t) +27(21) 681 7941 (e) infoline@rondebosch.com

Rondebosch Boys’ High School 2018 results For the eleventh year, our young men achieved a 100% pass rate and 94,6% university entrance rate. 149 candidates achieved a record 458 A symbols with 20 students achieving a full house of As. 79 students obtained three or more distinctions with 119 achieving at least 1 A symbol. Two boys deserve special mention: Tim Schlesinger was named in the top 29 performers in the NSC and came second nationally in Mathematics. Tim achieved 9 A symbols including 100% in Mathematics, 99% in Physical Sciences and 97% in AP Mathematics. Razeen Parker came second in the grade overall with 8 A symbols, including 100% in Mathematics and Physical Sciences. This is a busy school where boys often participate in a range of activities, often at the highest level, making this excellent academic achievement even more commendable. Such excellent results stem from the boys’ hard work, their teachers’ dedicated teaching and the unwavering support of the wonderful community that is “Bosch”. We are very proud of the class of 2018 and all who have supported them in their quest for excellence.
