Q Did you excel in sport at shool?

A Yes, I was the World Junior Champ in long jump while I was still at school, at the age of 19.

Q It is well-known that you were a tik addict. How did you manage to overcome that?

A I don’t really like to talk about it anymore, because I am not that person anymore. But as an inspiration for your readers I can say that it depends on the person you are and how much you really want to change your life. You have to get away from the situation mentally and physically. My family was such strong support during my struggle. I owe my success in overcoming this to my family and the Mighty God. Q 2016 and 2017 were two years of huge achievement and glory. How does it feel to have reached these heights? What is your daily motivation?

A I hope this is just the beginning for me. My daily motivation is that I can look at the world and say that I have lost the Olympic Gold Medal by only 1 cm. That 1 cm is my reminder to put my mind towards and work hard at being great. I am now the world champion.

Q As you’ve said earlier, you were the world junior long jump champion in 2010. In August this year you became the senior world long jump champion.

How does it feel to be the best in the world?

A As you say, I’ve been there before, but it is now on a different level. I always feel this is not enough – there is more to achieve than what I am doing now.

Q How do you handle the fame and attention that come your way as a highprofile athlete?

A One has to guard against it going to your head, as it can destroy you. It’s not easy to always be in the spotlight. Mental strength is very important. I make sure I keep perspective.

Q What was the highlight of your career this far?

A 2017 itself is the highlight of my career. I have never been so honoured, from being undefeated in the Diamond League, to becoming world champion and SA Sport Star of the Year.

World long jump champion Luvo Manyonga was the big winner at the SA Sports Awards on 12 November when he was crowned not only Sportsman of the Year, but also Sports Star of the Year.

The South African long jump phenomenon beat the likes of Wayde van Niekerk and Chad le Clos to claim the Sportsman of the Year accolade. AWSUM News checked in with Luvo on his achievements and life journey to become the world champion in August this year.

Q Congratulations on being awarded both SA Sportsman of the Year and SA Sports Star of the Year. What do these accolades mean to you?

A It is huge. I says to me that my country recognises my achievements. it’s a huge moment to be honoured like this.

Q You hail from Paarl. Tell us a bit about your school years and hometown.

A I played a lot of sport at school, at Desmond Tutu Secondary School in Mbekweni. I was really just a normal kid who enjoyed sport more than anything.

Q What are your future aspirations? What is the one thing you would really like to achieve? The big dream?

A I want to win the Olympic gold medal. And I want gold at the World Indoors, the Commonwealth Games, the Continental Cup and the African Cup. Then I would have won everything. I am still getting there. It will be like winning the grand slam of athletics.

Q What goes through your mind the moment before you start a jump?

A I zone out. I see myself making the jump and landing on the other side.

Q What do you do in your leisure time?

A I mostly watch cartoons. I also go to entertainment parks, for activities such as bowling.

Q What makes your heart beat faster when you are away from the athletics field?

A My girlfriend, Khomotso Mamburu. She is a very special person in my life.

She means a lot to me. She is also an athlete. She plays Free State softball and has been the player of the tournament in the Varsity Cup. Q What message do you have for our readers (high-school kids) about life and how to achieve their dreams?

A Keep on working hard. Go to school and study hard. You are the future.

Spoil yourself pink this holiday!!

I love salmon. It is such a healthy fish full of omega-3 fatty acids. I believe that omega-3 consumption can help keep osteoporosis at bay. Omega-3-rich salmon is a natural anti-inflammatory food, so eating this delicious fish on a regular basis is a great way to keep your bones nice and strong and it’s good for keeping your memory alert. It helps children to focus and remember more – no wonder it is called ‘brain food’.

One does not need a huge amount of fish to get the pleasure, because this fish is so rich in flavour that a little goes a long way, so even though it is more expensive than other fish, you don’t have to eat large portions to get enjoyment.

When buying salmon make sure that the eyes are clear and the fish has consistent colouring – no dark spots. The flesh should be firm to the touch and springs back when touched. The flesh must be intact with bone and it should be free of cuts on the belly area or or other parts of the body.

There should be no discolouration of the flesh and it most certainly should not smell fishy – it should smell fresh. Check the gills – there should be no slime on the gills. They should also be nice and bright red in colour.

It’s important to store your salmon in the coldest part of the refrigerator such as the meat drawer or the lowest shelf in the back of the fridge once you have brought it home. I try when possible to eat salmon once a week and I love to pair it with the earthy flavours of mushrooms, which are also full of wonderful health-giving properties and low in calories and fat.

Let’s Cook!!

Salmon with Sautéed Spinach and Mushrooms Ingredients

Serves 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15–20 minutes

• 4 x 160g Fillets of fresh salmon • 300g white button mushrooms, sliced • 1 Tomato, chopped • 200g of fresh baby spinach, washed and dried • 3 Cloves of garlic, minced • 1 tbsp of Balsamic vinegar • 3 tbsp of canola/olive oil • Salt and pepper, to taste

Method 1. Add 2 tbsp of oil and garlic in a frying pan with high sides and preheat it over medium heat. Once the garlic is nice and sizzling, add the mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Cook the mushrooms for 4 to 5 minutes or until they have cooked down. Add the tomato and season a bit more with salt and allow it to cook for a couple of minutes.

2. Turn the heat up to medium high and add the spinach.

Place a lid on the pan and let it cook for a minute or two or until the spinach has wilted. Remove the lid and season with a bit more salt if you feel it needs it. Add the balsamic vinegar and just mix everything together so it’s all mixed with the vinegar. Remove the veggies to a plate and cover it to keep warm. Set aside.

3. In the same pan, add another 1 tbsp of oil and allow it to get nice and hot on medium high. Season your salmon with salt and pepper on both sides and place them skin side down in the hot pan. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side if your salmon is about 2,5 cm thick.

4. Set it on your cooked veggies and top with a little fresh parsley.

ways walking boosts your health Walking is a fantastic, easy way to get moving – and your body will thank you in more ways than one.

Simple, energising and low impact, walking is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to bring more physical activity into their daily life. It can be done anytime and anywhere, and it’s something that most people can do regardless of age or starting fitness levels. Plus, there are plenty of opportunities you can find to fit walking into your day, without necessarily thinking of it as exercise. Here are just some of the health benefits of walking:

1. It can make you live longer Well, that’s just about the ultimate health benefit, isn’t it? Regular physical activity improves your chances of living a longer, healthier life. In fact, a Harvard University study suggests that walking briskly for just 75 minutes a week can add almost two years to your life, while upping your steps to walk 2.5 hours a week can add more than seven years. Other research has also found a link between walking quickly and living longer – so get those runners on and start zipping along.

2. It helps keep your heart healthy Being active helps keep your heart in good condition. To reduce your risk of heart disease and high blood pressure, the Heart Foundation suggests aiming for 30 minutes of moderate activity such as walking on most, if not all, days of the week.

Studies also show that when it comes to cardiovascular health, a brisk walk is as good as a run. People who walk regularly have fewer heart attacks and strokes, have lower blood pressure, and higher levels of healthy HDL cholesterol than those who are mostly sedentary.

3. It reduces your risk of diabetes A combination of daily exercise, a balanced diet and a healthy body weight can prevent 60% of type 2 diabetes cases. Regular walking is a great way to manage your weight, and therefore reduce your chances of developing this common condition.

Walking for 30 minutes a day also makes your muscles more sensitive to insulin, which means better blood sugar control. This not only helps lower your risk of diabetes, it can also help you to manage the condition if you already have it.

4. It helps you lose and manage weight Any kind of regular physical activity will help you burn more calories, manage your weight and lose unwanted extra kilos. Research has shown that frequent walking can help you lose body fat. A study published in the British Medical

Journal also found that a higher daily step count was linked with lower body mass index and lower waist to hip ratio.

It has also been suggested that walking can help reduce cravings, and that taking a walk after a meal can encourage weight loss.

5. It boosts your brain function Being active nourishes your brain tissue and encourages the growth, health and survival of new brain cells. Studies have shown a link between exercise and improved cognitive function, including memory, concentration, clarity of thought and problem solving. One study, for example, found that walking at one’s own pace for 40 minutes three times a week can help enhance the connectivity of important brain circuits.

It has also been shown that regular exercise such as walking can help prevent decline in brain function, such as in conditions like Alzheimer’s.

6. It’s good for your mental health Lower stress, better mood, a feeling of refreshment, and greater emotional resilience – walking offers excellent mental health benefits. Not only does it give you a chance to clear you mind, the physical activity helps to release endorphins (your body’s natural mood enhancers) and lower cortisol (the stress hormone).

Studies suggest regular walking can be a good natural tool for managing and preventing depression and anxiety.

7. It gives you more energy You’ve probably noticed feeling brighter and more rejuvenated when you come back from a brisk stroll – even if you felt tired to start with. Taking a walk is a great way to get a natural energy boost. Plus, it helps improve the quality of your sleep. One study showed that 30 minutes of brisk walking over five days can help you sleep better, so you feel more alert and energetic throughout the day.

PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL Senior Awards Ceremony Every year Pinelands North Primary celebrates their Senior Awards Ceremony at the Old Mutual Business Park Hall. This year it was held on 8 November and we were privileged to have our ex-deputy principal, Valentine Nefdt, as the guest of honour to hand out gifts, trophies and certificates. The ceremony was a joyous occasion to celebrate each other’s strengths.

Hannah Hector in Grade 7 won the Dux of the School award and various pupils were recognised for leadership, being a shining example of good morals, academics, sport, culture, entrepreneurial skills, and more.

At PNPS, we acknowledge our pupils throughout the year by handing out weekly merits at assembly, announcing daily ‘Caught in the Act’s (which catches children in the act of doing the right thing), awarding subject and class trophies twice a term and once a term we have the Teacher Pleaser award for outstanding work ethic and behaviour.

The Senior Awards Ceremony is our way to formally recognise our top senior pupils’ academic and all-round development.

Foundation Phase Awards Ceremony Our annual Foundation Phase Awards Ceremony is always an opportunity to acknowledge our pupils for their special qualities.

The Khula Kids Shield for resilience and perseverance was awarded to Erin Tucker. Naomi Ncube won the Grade 1 Trophy for the child who had best upheld the values of PNPS in their first year at school.

The Ubuntu Bear is awarded to a child who is a shining example of community spirit. This is a teddy bear dressed up in our school’s uniform. Sara Toefy was the recipient of this award.

Each child received a unique certificate. While academics are important, children are affirmed for their personal growth, social skills, sporting abilities and cultural involvement.

We hope that these certificates will help to foster a strong self-esteem in each one of our pupils.
