Jenny Jenny Morris – aka The Giggling Gourmet – is one of SA’s most-loved food personalities. She is a restaurateur (Yumcious, in Greenpoint), author, radio and TV presenter, celebrity chef, teacher and culinary tour guide who has had an ongoing love affair with food since she was a child, when she started making mouth-watering treats for school fundraisers. It’s a love affair in the true sense of the word, one that employs all the senses. Q: Tell us about Yumcious – it’s origins, your vision, what you are offering. A: Yumcious serves fine casual food. I spend almost evey night of my life dreaming up recipes. I can almost taste the colours, textures and flavours in my dreams, they are so real. I needed an outlet other than my cooking school to turn these recipes into reality. I wanted to serve fine casual food to lots of people, and the food is just that. Q: How did your journey as a foodie start? A: From a young age, I have always had a very adventurous palate. My parents welcomed us in the kitchen and were always introducing us to new ingredients. I always knew my life would revolve around food.

Cooking with love provides food for the soul!!
Prawn Crystal Spring Rolls Serves 6
I learned to make these at the home of a tipsy boatman on the banks of the Mekong River. They are utterly delicious – fresh, crunchy and tasty – and are really easy to make, even though they take a little time to put together. Get someone to give you a hand soaking the rice paper. The trick is to soak one at a time, as they are very delicate, and by the time you have filled one, the next one will be ready to roll with a little help from a friend.
INGREDIENTS
METHOD
• Make the dipping sauce first. Place the vinegar and Dipping Sauce water in a saucepan over medium heat and add the sugar, stirring to dissolve. Bring to the boil and let • ½ cup rice vinegar it bubble away for a few minutes. Remove from the • ¼ cup boiling water heat and stir in the fish sauce and chillies. Stir in the • ½ cup castor sugar chopped coriander, sesame oil and diced cucumber • 1 Tbs fish sauce when cool and set aside. • 2 small chillies, chopped • To make the spring rolls, place one rice paper at a time • 1 Tbs chopped fresh in a bowl of warm water to to soften it slightly. Remove coriander to a flat surface and place a little red cabbage, carrot, • 1 tsp sesame oil a few bean sprouts and some cucumber in the centre • 1Tbs finely-diced fresh of the rice paper and top with two fresh mint and basil cucumber leaves and a sprig of coriander. Now top with two prawns and a lettuce leaf. If the leaves are too big, trim Spring Rolls them to size. • 24 prawns, deveined, • Fold in the sides of the rice paper and gently roll up lightly steamed and nice and tight. Do the same with the remaining rounds shelled of rice paper. Pack onto a tray with enough space • 1 cup finely shredded between them so they don’t stick together, and cover red cabbage with a damp clean cloth. • 1 large carrot, peeled • When you are ready to serve, slice the rolls in half and thinly julienned diagonally, place on a plate and serve with dipping • 1 cup freshest bean sauce sprouts I sometimes make these with shredded duck breast, rare • 1 medium English thinly-sliced beef fillet, shredded chicken breasts, or even cucumber, julienned leave out the meat and go vegetarian. LAERSKOOL BLANCO Laerskool Blanco blink uit in landswye kompetisie Koorkoors loop hoog by Laerskool Blanco! Die skool het ‘n uitsonderlike prestasie behaal deurdat beide die junior en senior kore deurgedring het tot die Sing in Harmonie-finaal, wat op 28 November 2016 in Jeffreysbaai plaasvind. Sing in Harmonie is die grootste skolekoorkompetisie in SuidAfrika, en word vir die afgelope twee jaar op KykNet uitgesaai. Hierdie jaar het sowat 90 skole van regoor die land deelgeneem aan die kompetisie, en dit is die eerste keer in die geskiedenis van die kompetisie dat die junior en senior kore van een skool deurdring na die finaal! Wat ‘n wonderlike prestasie vir die relatiewe klein skooltjie, met slegs 360 leerders! Onder leiding van Clarise Pretorius en Chantelle Hattingh word daar met toewyding geoefen en gesing. Daar word ook hard gewerk om fondse in te samel om alle koorlede die kans te gun om hierdie besonderse geleentheid by te woon. Entrepreneurs Day
Prefects of 2017 camp On the weekend of 14 and 15 October, the potential prefects of 2017 (Grade 6s) went on a camp on Mr Rob Stoker’s farm. The children had to prove themselves for being leaders in all sorts of group activities. They really enjoyed the hike to the farm, as well as the obstacle course. The children worked together to set up camp and prepare dinner.
The Grade 7s had their annual Entrepreneurs Day on Wednesday, 28 September, where they all sold many delicious items to eat. This Entrepreneurs Day is part of the curriculum to teach the children how to think “business” with a certain budget, expenses, sales and profit.

Ons skoolhoof verjaar! Op 18 Oktober het ons skoolhoof, Juffrou Huysamen, haar verjaardag saam met ons gevier. Die hele skool, asook Mamma Meerkat, het die skoolhoof op die rugbyveld ontvang. Na die leerders vir Juffrou Huysamen gesing het, het daar ‘n vliegtuig oor die skool gevlieg wat lekkertjies uitgegooi het vir die leerders om te vang. Elke leerder in die skool het ook ‘n kolwyntjie en sap gekry om tydens pouse te geniet.
Projek: Interafhanklikheid tussen mens en natuur Dié praktiese projek was oor die interafhanklikheid tussen mens en natuur, asook waterbesparing en herwinning op ‘n volhoubare en eenvoudige manier.

Golden Rules for Staying Safe this H After reporting that 60% of national and provincial roads in South Africa were in very poor condition, the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) have listed some golden rules for motorists to observe before departing on their holiday this year. It is important to plan your trip and if you are aware of possible delays on a particular route or the general condition of the road you are about to travel on, driver frustration can be minimized because it will be expected. When traveling to remote areas, check with people at the point of destination what the expected road conditions you are likely to encounter and give them an approximate time of arrival – if you are delayed, let them know. Please be aware that the holiday season is a time when many more drivers and pedestrians tend to be on the roads under the influence of alcohol and it is for this reason that motorists can expect higher levels of law enforcement in this regard.

The AA has listed the following guidelines to assist you on your journey and to help ensure you reach your destination safely: • Lights, indicators, windscreen wipers, brakes, steering, exhaust systems and tyres should be carefully examined for faults. • Motorists unsure about the roadworthiness of their vehicles can have a technical examination done at any AA DEKRA centre. • Always carry a spare fan belt and radiator hose in the boot; these could save time and money in the event of a breakdown. • Check insurance policies. Motor vehicle, householder and life assurance policies should be in order and kept in a safe place.

Holiday Season • Newspaper and milk deliveries should be canceled and provision made for the care of pets. • Travelers should inform their nearest police station of the period that they will be away from home. • Families traveling an unfamiliar route must plan their journey, use major routes and try and avoid back roads. • Always wear your seatbelt and maintain at least a three to four second following distance. • Increase your following distance at night and on wet roads to six seconds or more. • Fatigue and eye strain can be avoided by making frequent rest stops; driver changes are advisable at rest stops. • Include safety breaks every two hours or every 200 kilometers traveled. • Cars should be locked when unattended, with no valuables inside where they can be seen by passer-bys. • Never leave children or pets in a locked car, the heat built up in the interior can cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke and can be fatal. • Carry your driver’s license at all times. • Drive with your headlights on all the time – this makes you so much more visible to other road users, especially pedestrians. There are far too many accidents on the roads every year, and by reinforcing the safety rules the AA hopes to minimise the amount of road deaths and accidents. Hoërskool Langenhoven hou sportdinee Die skool het op Woensdag, 12 Oktober hulle jaarlikse sportdinee gehou. Volgens Mnr. Piet de Villiers (skoolhoof), was dit weer eens ‘n uiters suksesvolle sportjaar waar leerders in verskillende sportsoorte uitgeblink het.
Hoërskool Langenhoven is bevoorreg om hul eerste leerderuitruilprojek met Het Heilige Hart College in Waregem, Wes-Vlaandere, België te kon hê. ‘n Groep van sestien Graad 10 en 11-leerders het vir twee weke vanaf 23 September tot 7 Oktober in België, Nederland en Frankryk gaan kuier, nadat hulle Belgiese uitruilleerders in April hier was. Dit was vir ons leerders ‘n “eenkeer-in-‘n-leeftyd” ondervinding wat geen geld in die wêreld kan koop nie. Hoërskool Langenhoven se leerders en twee personeellede saam met hulle uitruilmaats. Oakdalers koester moederliefde Die uiters gewilde Oakdale ma-en-seun-oggend is vir die derde agtereenvolgende jaar aangebied en is deur 230 ma’s en hul seuns bygewoon. Tydens hierdie geleentheid gebruik Oakdale-leerders en ma’s die geleentheid om kosbare tyd saam met mekaar te spandeer. Vanjaar was Gretha Wiid die gasspreker. Aangesien die meeste Oakdalers vir vier dae van die week van koshuisinwoning gebruik maak, word baie sterk klem gelê op gesonde ouer–kind-verhoudings. Met aanvang van die jaar word die uiters gewilde paen-seun-aand tydens die Oakdale Jeugweek aangebied. Oakdale voeg waarde toe tot elke leerder en gesin, maar belê ook in die toekoms deur die voorbereiding van sterk vaderfigure en goeie eggenotes bydraend tot potensiële gesonde gesinne. Op Oakdale word sterk klem gelê op respek, maar ook genade uit Sy hand en waardering teenoor ouers ervaar. Gretha het ook ‘n sessie met net die Oakdaleseuns gehad en reguit met die Oakdalers gesels rakende die onderwerp “Van seun tot man”. Oakdale is meer as ‘n skool en bied vormingsgeleenthede om sodoende eendag sinvolle en waardevolle besluite in hul lewens te maak. Sterk klem word gelê op die verantwoordelikheid van sterk vaderfigure in die Suid-Afrikaanse gesin.

Eskom Ekspo vir Jong Wetenskaplikes Hoërskool Punt het drie projekte gehad wat die Eden Karoo Streek op die Eskom Ekspo se Internasionale Science Fair in Johannesburg verteenwoordig het. Die drie projekte het weer eens baie goed presteer, veral as daar in ag geneem word dat dit die top 500 projekte van regoor die land, sowel as Botswana, Kenia, Swaziland, Mosambiek en Meksiko was wat daar deelgeneem het. • Aphelele Tyutula (Grade 10) did research on how to get more reliable witnesses after a crime was committed. She received a silver medal. • Aidan Olsen (Grade 11) did an engineering project and invented a Baited Underwater System. His system was tested by White Sharks Africa here in our Bay. He received a silver medal, an excellent award in the engineering category. • Gerné van Zyl (Grade 11) het navorsing gedoen oor hoe tieners hul koeldrank kan toets teen “Spiking” wanneer hulle in die openbaar kuier. Sy verwerf een van slegs 52 goue medaljes, asook ‘n beurs van Stellenbosch Universiteit. Gerné word ook gekies as finalis om moontlik haar projek oorsee te gaan uitstal by een van die Wetenskaplike Ekspo’s in Amerika, Europa of Taiwan.

The GTTP runs an annual Research Competition for Tourism learners in South African High Schools. The competition provides learners the opportunity to conduct research on a topic determined by the GTTP directors from all participating countries, write a case study and present their topic to fellow learners and teachers from 11 other GTTP countries. The theme for 2016 was Heritage Tourism. Melizza Liebenberg en Alexandra Combrinck het tweede gekom met hulle projek oor die Diasmuseum en die Diasfees. Hulle titel was “Europe meets Africa” en hulle het vakansie binne Suid-Afrika gewen. Die trofee en sertifikate is in Bloemfontein tydens die openingseremonie van die Nasionale Toerisme Loopbaan Ekspo aan hulle oorhandig deur die Minister van Onderwys van die Vrystaat, mnr. Tate Makgoe.
Krieket Op Saterdag, 15 Oktober het Punt en Oakdale kragte gemeet op die krieketveld. Punt het bloed gesweet teen die uitstekende boulaanval van Oakdale. Punt teken slegs 75 lopies aan. Punt se boulers het egter terug geveg en boul Oakdale uit vir 62 lopies. Punt wen met 13 lopies.

York High School held their Annual Prizegiving and Valedictory Service last week. These two functions reflected the obvious success and growth of the school and were celebrations of the ethos that York holds dear. Ex-pupil Mr Cheslyn Gardiner delivered a message on the Thursday about the moments at school that forge the pride of a true Yorkie, which resonated with all present, while the Headmaster, Mr Francois Moll, addressed current educational issues that pose challenges for South African schools. On Friday, the school bade farewell to the Matrics of 2016 and announced the leadership for 2017. All in all, it was a wonderful week.
York High School drama club recently participated in the Schools Shakespeare Festival held at the Arts Theatre in George. We learnt a lot and had a whole lot of fun. We can't wait for 2017!!! Thank you to the cast members and their parents who had to give up part of their holiday for rehearsals.

More than 400 athletes gathered in the Portuguese capital city Lisbon to participate in the 2nd UIPM Laser-Run World Championships. Laser-Run is the fastest growing sport of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) and after a successful Olympic Games for Modern Pentathlon in Rio de Janeiro, the championships provided an exhibition in Running and Shooting skills with the format mirroring the Modern Pentathlon Combined Event. In all, 421 pentathletes from 22 nations battled high temperatures to take part in an exciting weekend of competitions catering for all ages from under-11 to over-60. There were excellent results from teams from Egypt and South Africa, demonstrating the global reach that the new format has already achieved. 48 Athletes of South Africa competed at this event. Laser-Run combines Running (800m laps) and Shooting (laser pistols from 10m) in fast-paced and dynamic races that can be held in urban, parkland or beach venues. The venue in Portugal was Parque das Nações (Park of Nations) in the Oceanarium area which was renovated for the Lisbon Expo in 1998. Suné Visser, a learner from Outeniqua High School, represented South Africa at this event and came 11th in the final heat which was held at 21:00 in the evening.
