V Hoe het die hele Nasionale Braaidag-inisiatief ontstaan?

A Ons is mal oor braai – daar is geen argument daaroor nie. As ‘n nasie is ons op Nasionale Braaidag soos geen ander tyd verenig nie. Ons deel stories, ontspan, dink na en geniet net die land wat ons die geleentheid gee om groot hoeveelhede braaihout te verbrand. En in 2017 is daar meer as een geleentheid om rondom ‘n vuur bymekaar te kom.

V Wat is spesiaal aan vanjaar se Nasionale Braaidag?

A Omdat Nasionale Braaidag hierdie jaar op ‘n Sondag val, is daar ‘n hele Saterdag beskikbaar om vir die land se grootste openbare vakansiedag voor te berei. Geïnspireer deur die Nederlandse vakanse van Koningsnag net voor Koningsdag, moedig ons alle Suid-Afrikaners aan om deel te neem aan Nasionale Braainag die aand voor Nasionale Braaidag. Dit is die kans vir die braaiers van Suid-Afrika om lekker vroeg al in die Nasionale Braaidagstemming te kom. Dit is die partytjiebraai voor Nasionale Braaidag se ontspannende braai.

V Maar wag, daar’s meer aan die braaibeweging – kort voor Nasionale Braaidag toer jy en ‘n 200-sterk toerende karnaval die land as die Nasionale Braaitoer. Wat gebeur tydens hierdie hierdie toer?

A Dink aan dit as ‘n politieke saamtrek voor ‘n verkiesing, behalwe dat ons nie stemme soek nie, maar ‘n oproep tot miljoene Suid-Afrikaners maak om saam te kom rondom braaivleisvure en ons erfenis te vier. Nou in sy vyfde jaar, tree die Nasionale Braaitoer op as ‘n rokerige, vlamgebraaide boodskapper vir Nasionale Braaidag, met die deelnemers aan die Toer wat die braaiboodskap deur die land versprei en openbare opwinding opwek vir ons land se vinnignaderkomende grootste dag van braai. Die 2017 Nasionale Braaitoer het op 10 September in Kaapstad afgeskop en stop by ikoniese plekke soos Kaap Agulhas, Calitzdorp, Plettenbergbaai en Stormsrivier voor die finale stop in Port Elizabeth.

V Wat is die doel van die Nasionale Braaitoer?

A Dit gaan alles daaroor om ons visie van nasiebou rondom ’n vuur te bevorder en ten toon te stel. Dit is ‘n soort bloudruk oor hoe om erfenismaand en Erfenisdag die beste te vier. Dit gaan oor die saambring van diverse mense om die een ding te doen wat ons almal geniet, naamlik kosmaak en kuier rondom ‘n oop vuur. Dit is ook ‘n geleentheid om openbare opgewondenheid en momentum in die aanloop tot 24 September op te bou op ‘n manier wat Suid-Afrikaners laat dink oor hoe om hulle eie erfenis te vier, en hoe fantasties dit is om ‘n Suid-Afrikaner te wees.

V Hoe werk die Nasionale Braaitoer nou eintlik?

A Soos altyd is die roete gekies om die verskeidenheid van die Suid-Afrikaanse natuurskoon in te neem en om te fokus op belangrike geskiedkundige plekke op die roete. Die doel van die Nasionale Braaitoer is vir deelnemers om dit te geniet, maar ook om meer oor ons wonderlike land te leer.

V Hoekom moet deelnemers ‘n Suid-Afrikaanse vlag hê?

A Met registrasie ontvang elke deelnemer ‘n volgrootte Suid-Afrikaanse vlag.

Die deelnemers dra hierdie vlae ten alle tye. Dit is die reënboogwuif van die Toer.

V Wat is die rol van Nasionale Braaidag en die Nasionale Braaitoer in ons land?

A Dit is herinneringe dat ons as inwoners van so ‘n ongelooflike diverse land iets in gemeen het. Ons land het ‘n ryk en diverse erfenis en dit moet gevier word. Maar dit is belangrik om een ding te deel, en daardie een ding is die nasie se liefde vir kosmaak oor die kole van ‘n vuur. Ons het baie om te vier as ‘n nasie en as diverse mense. Watter beter manier as met ‘n Toer wat jou meer leer oor ons kollektiewe erfenis en jou mede-Suid-Afrikaners, en ‘n spesiale dag wat jou aanmoedig om dit rondom ‘n vuur te vier.

V Jy is die eerste AWSUM-voorbladgesig om twee keer op ons omslag te verskyn – baie geluk! Wat dink jy daarvan?

Bacon & Cider Roosterkoek

WHAT YOU NEED (makes 8)

• 1 packet bacon (250 g of your favourite type) • 1 small packet self-raising flour (500 g) • 1 tsp salt • 1 tot olive oil • 1 bottle cider

WHAT YOU DO 1. Either braai the bacon on a grid over coals until crisp or fry it in a pan until crisp. Remove from the heat, let it cool down and chop into small pieces.

2. To your favourite mixing bowl add the self-raising flour, salt and crispy braaied chopped-up bacon.

Mix this using one of your recently washed hands.

3. Add the olive oil and cider.

Using one or both of your recently washed hands, mix and knead everything together. You do not need to overdo this step. Be lazy and knead as little as possible; as soon as everything is properly combined you’re good to go.

4. Use your hands and on a flat surface, shape this stretchy piece of dough into a flat rectangle or square as well as you can manage.

Now use a sharp knife and cut the dough into 8 or 9 equal portions.

Fix the shape of each one slightly and you’re done. Using extra flour to dust the dough throughout this process makes it infinitely easier to deal with.

5. Braai on a grid over mediumheat coals for about 15 to 20 minutes. It is important to turn the roosterkoek often, so that they do not burn, but get cooked through. The outside should be crispy and ever so slightly charred here and there, and the inside obviously done. If there is a hollow sound when you tap them, they are ready. Insert a sharp knife into one and if it comes out clean, you know for a fact that they are ready.

6. Serve warm with butter and cheese or with any braaied meat.

I am a massive fan of roosterkoek and the culinary giants bacon and cider also make regular appearances at my braai fire. Together, they will change the way you look at roosterkoek forever. The word ‘roosterkoek’ is Afrikaans for a bread roll baked on your grid over the coals of a wood fire. To my mind, the word is part of common language in South Africa and can de facto be used in all 11 official languages. Everything about this recipe is great – few ingredients, a very easy process and a fantastic tasting result. As it happens, these roosterkoek go very well with any type of braaied meat.

Chocolate Fondant Potjie Pudding There is a medical reason why you should eat chocolate. The scent of the chocolate increases theta brain waves, which induces relaxation. We all know how vitally important it is to destress, relax and feel good about your life. And this is why you and your loved ones should consume the baked chocolate potjie as often as possible. It will make you a better person.

WHAT YOU NEED

WHAT TO DO

(feeds 8)

1. Make the batter, part 1: In your no. 10 flat-bottomed baking potjie, whisk the egg and then use your wooden spoon and mix the butter, milk and vanilla with the whisked egg.

2. Make the batter, part 2: Now mix the flour, cocoa, salt, sugar and chopped chocolate pieces into the wet mixture of step 1. Just use the sugar and cocoa specified as ingredients for the batter, not the sugar and cocoa for the sauce, which only comes in the next step. Everything needs to be mixed properly so use a wooden spoon and put in some effort. If you’re unfit get one of your friends or family members to help you, or buy yourself a cordless stick blender (it changed my life).

3. Make the sauce: Stir the sugar, cocoa powder and boiling water together until all the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth.

Slowly pour this hot cocoa-sugar-water mixture over the dough mixture that is already in the pot.

4. Bake: Put the lid on the potjie and bake for 25 minutes by placing coals under the pot and a lot of coals on the lid of the pot. Your work of art is ready when the top is firm to the touch.

5. Serve with fresh cream or ice cream.

For the batter • 1 egg • 3 tots butter (melted) • ½ cup milk • ½ tot vanilla essence • 1 cup self-raising flour • 1 tot cocoa powder • pinch of salt • ½ cup sugar • 2 small slabs dark chocolate (80 g each, broken into blocks)

For the sauce • 1½ cups brown sugar • 2 tots cocoa powder • 1½ cups boiling water

To serve • fresh cream or ice cream

As the Grade 4 learners have incorporated the new No Homework Policy and implemented the New 40 Minutes of Reading everyday, a love for reading has developed. They have been reading The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me as well as The Fantastic Mr Fox, both by Roald Dahl. In order to celebrate a love for reading, during National Reading Month, the Grade 4s decided to celebrate World Roald Dahl Day. They celebrated by throwing a party for the late Roald Dahl, read extracts from his books and made fox masks.

Tennis Our boys and girls tennis teams participated at the Inter Africa Bureau de Change Highs School tennis tournament that was held in Bethlehem from 7 to 9 September.

Our girls played in the A-section and finished in a well-deserved 8th place. Maud Tsaura was chosen by all the players as the Players Player for True Sportsmanship. What a great honour for this humble star.

Our boys team also played in the A-section and advanced to the finals where they met the strong team of Hoërskool Helpmekaar.

Maud Tsaura After the doubles game the scores where tied. In the singles Michael Wessels lost in the third set tie-breaker while Alden Coetzee won his match in the third set tie-breaker. After NJ Coetzee won his match in straight sets the pressure was on Johann Coetzee to take at least one set for Curro to win. Johann did this in style and Curro College was crowned as the champion boys team for 2017.

Five of the students progressed to the Gauteng Individual Championships played on 27 May at Hoërskool FH Odendaal and Claire Angel placed 4th overall (out of 63 participants) and progressed with seven other students in Gauteng to the South African Schools Individual Championships in July.

After participating in the SA Schools Individual Championships, Claire achieved 5th place overall (out of 63 participants) and also ranked Number 1 of all the Gauteng players.

Chess first team Our Chess first team came second in the District Schools Chess Championships and went through to the Gauteng Schools Championships. Tara Pemu, Gabrielle Amrouni, Caitlyn Hattingh, Natasha Janse van Rensburg, Rose Mamabolo and Deren Effendi played a fierce game on 9 September at the Sports Arena on UP’s Mamelodi Campus, and achieved 3rd place overall.

Tara Pemu, Claire Angel, Gabrielle Amrouni, Caitlyn Hattingh, Natasha Janse van Rensburg, Rose Mamabolo and Deren Effendi were also invited to participate in the South African Junior Chess Championships in January 2018.

Model UN On Thursday 31 August our Model United Nations society had two teams taking part in a Unesco event at Jeppe Boys’ High School, discussing the topic of ‘Youth in Global Governance’.

Kiese Mpasa, Beniciel Lonji and Meagan Picton did an outstanding job of representing the pro-youth delegation of Ecuador, while Chipo Hansungule, Nolitha Mrwata, and Tshegofatso Matlou represented the People’s Republic of China and played their cards a bit differently, arguing that the youth must first be educated significantly before their role in global governance would really matter.

At the end of the day, a working document was successfully passed and Tshego walked away with the prize for third best speaker of the day. We would also like to congratulate our three first-time MUN debaters, Kiese, Nolitha and Beniciel, on a job well done, making it seem as though they have been doing it for years.

Garsie Eerstes was wenners van die AHMP Prestigenetbaltoernooi en naaswenners in die TuksSkole-reeks en die Coke-toernooi in Potchefstroom.

Jani Bergh speel ook vir die SA Skole-netbalspan, wat internasionaal deelgeneem het.

Landloop Nadia Potgieter het die SA-titel gewen vir dogters 0.14 by die SA-landloopkampioenskappe op Saterdag, 9 September.

Klofies Graad 10bal Die Klofie Graad 10-bal met die tema ‘Jazz’ is op Saterdag, 16 September in die skoolsaal gehou en was ‘n luisterryke geleentheid met pragtige uitrustings, smaakvolle décor en vermaak uit die boonste rakke. Die leerders is deur een van die kunstenaars by die Proe’toria Klofie-fees, Brendon Peyper, wat ‘n kort vertoning gelewer het, Dané de Wet en Marcus Fourie. verras.

Die Sewes-rugbyspan van Hoërskool Waterkloof het tydens die Hoërskole Sewesreeks, wat deur Hoërskool Bergvlam in Mbombela aangebied is, al hul wedstryde gewen en so as kampioene van die dag uit die stryd getree.

Die Klofies het die Hoërskool Nelspruit met 24–19 in die eindstryd geklop om as kampioene gekroon te word. Die Klofies het al hul wedstryde oortuigend gewen en JP Krugell is ook as Speler van die Toernooi aangewys.

Met dié oorwinning het die span hul plek in die Kampioen van Kampioenetoernooi, wat op 20 en 21 Oktober te die Konka-kampterrein in Rustenburg sal plaasvind, verseker.

Carla Smit Carla is ‘n sterk leier wat haar ma as voorbeeld en mentor voorhou. Carla hou van braaivleis, koffie en Coke en is bang vir krokodille en hare in haar kos. Haar gunstelingboek is The Shack en films is The Choice en Vir die Voëls. Sy droom om eendag ‘n Audi TT of Ford Ranger-bakkie te ry en No longer a slave to fear is die liedjie wat tans haar hartsnare roer.

Mense wat onderneem om iets te doen en dit dan nie doen nie en projekte wat nie volgens beplanning verloop nie, frusteer haar. Carla sou baie graag vir Nelson Mandela wou ontmoet, aangesien hy vir haar ‘n uitstekende voorbeeld van ‘n leierfiguur is en sy lewe aan geregtigheid gewy het.

Haar lewensfilosofie is: Godgerig in alles wat ek aanpak.

Elrich van der Spuy Elrich se voorbeeld en mentor is die hoofseun van 2016, Janu Buys, as gevolg van sy sterk waardesisteem en die manier waarop hy die skool gelei het.
