AWSUM News caught up with sensational YouTube comedy wondergirl, Suzelle DIY, who has just landed her very own slot on Comedy Central – not bad for a poppie with a hectic wannabe accent and an ever-silent best friend! Suzelle DIY’s YouTube channel has more than 48 000 subscribers and picks up 40 000 views on the day a new episode launches.

Q: Congratulations on the latest feather in your cap – your very own slot on Comedy Central. How does it feel to play in the big league now?

A: I feel like a million rands. It has been a dream come true to watch myself on TV. Q: Who is Suzelle really? Tell us a bit more about yourself – likes, dislikes, favourite movie, favourite song, favourite book.

A: I’m just a small town girl with a passion for DIY, braaiing and dinner parties. My movie of the moment is the How To Be Single and my favourite book is How to do Just about Everything by The Reader’s Digest.

Q: Why do you think you are so popular? What is your secret to success?

A: I think people like that the DIY in my videos is useful, and that sometimes things go wrong. My secret is to keep going no matter what happens!

Q: What are your top five DIY tips for women like yourself who like to be glamorous and never get their hands dirty while doing the dirty work A: Right, this is a good one. It’s important to always look your best no matter what you are busy doing.

• Wear an apron when you are in the kitchen.

• Use safety goggles when you chop onions to stop your eyes from tearing up and smudging your make-up.

• Run your nails over a bar of soap before you do the gardening. It will keep the dirt from getting under your nails.

• Buy a box of disposable gloves. They are great to use for any DIY project.

• I like to cut up plastic packets and lay them down on my work surface to prevent any mess escaping Q: What do you do for fun and relaxation in your leisure time?

A: I like to go for a coffee with my best friend, Marianne.

I like to watch cooking shows and look for DIY ideas on

the Google.

Q: Other celebrities, across a spectrum, like Nataniël, Hellen Zille, Tim Noakes and Jan-Hendrik, want to be associated with you. Why is that? What do they gain? What do you gain?

A: I think they are just excited to meet me because they want to soak up some of my creativity.

Q: Where do you get your ideas from for your videos? Which episode is your favourite? Why? A: I get my ideas from all sorts of places. I find them on the Google and in magazines. I also get sent a lot of great ideas from my fans. My favourite episode is How to Make a Braai Pie, because that was my first video to go viral.

Q: Are you English or Afrikaans? Who are your biggest fans – English or Afrikaans-speaking people? Why do you think is that so?

A: I’m Afrikaans, but I like to speak in English in my videos so that the peoples overseas can also enjoy the videos. Shame. I think my fans are a real mix of different cultures.

Q: What is the single thing that you enjoy most when creating and crafting a new episode?

A: I love filming it with Marianne and my neighbour Hennie. We always have so much fun together.

Q What DIY message do you have for our readers (parents of schoolgoing children)?

A: Parents, you must teach your kids that their creativity is their number one tool!

Roll up, roll up!!

I always have a roll or two of frozen pastry in my freezer, you should too, it comes in handy if I want to make a tart or pie at the drop of a hat. I love little jam tarts and when the craving hits me, I make my way to the freezer and pull out a roll of shop bought frozen pastry, wait for it to thaw, roll it out, cut out little rounds and pop them into the hollows of a muffin tin, place a little butter in the base, sprinkle with desiccated coconut and a spoonful of any jam that takes my fancy , pop it into a hot oven, put the kettle on and before you know it I’m munching on jam tarts and sipping tea. The other thing I like to do with a sheet of pastry is fill it and make a roulade. A roulade is a dish of filled rolled meat or pastry, the term roulade originates from the French word "rouler", meaning "to roll". Now what I like about having a sheet of pastry handy is that you can fill it with a million different things and call them, tarts pies and roulades, you can make any of these from scratch or use up left-overs from the night before to make a pie.

Vegetarian puff pastry roulade Ingredients • Olive oil • 200g button mushrooms sliced • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 2 Tbsp. Wellington’s sweet chilli sauce • 1 cup chopped spinach, wilted • 250ml ricotta • 3 tbsp chopped peppadews • ¾ c Cheddar cheese • 1 tsp chopped fresh rosemary • Salt and freshly ground pepper • 1 x 400g puff pastry • 1 egg beaten

Method • Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the mushrooms until lightly browned, stir in the garlic and sweet chilli sauce, season with salt

and pepper and cook for a further 3 minutes until all the moisture has cooked off the mushrooms.

• Allow cooling, and then mixing with the remaining filling ingredients, except the spinach.

• Roll out the pastry until 2mm thick place the mushroom mixture onto the centre of the pastry and shape into a sausage shape, top with the spinach and then fold the pastry over the filling to make a parcel. Brush with beaten egg.

• Lift onto a baking sheet lined with baking paper, this makes it easier to lift off the sheet when cooked.

• Bake in a pre-heated 200 deg C oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until golden and crisp.

With only a few matches left, we believe that the u/9A, u/10A, u/11A as well as the First Team will be able to play in the finals of the B-Bond.

The finals will take place on 9 June at Curro Hazeldean Primary’s home ground. In 2015, both the u/9A and u/10A teams was crowned as Blue Bulls Primary schools B-Bond champions.

So far this year three of the learners were selected for Blue Bulls teams and the Rooikat team: Adriaan Fourie for the Blue Bulls u/12B team and Christoff Nieuwoudt for the Blue Bulls u/13 XV team. Keanan Wessels was selected for the u/13 Rooikat team. Curro Hazeldean are proud of these learners.

Curro Hazeldean Tennis Nie eers die gietende reën kon die vier seuns van Curro Hazeldean stuit nie. As gevolg van die reën is die toernooi met ‘n dag vertraag. Tydens die eerste Buffelspoort Tennistoernooi het die vier seuns deurgedring na die finaal van die toernooi.

Hulle het te staan gekom teen die seuns van Werner Joubert Tennisakademie in die finaal en die toernooi gewen. Bernard Janse van Vuuren het ook die algeheel eerste plek in die toernooi beklee.

Daarby het die seuns ook die trofee vir die beste gees van al die spanne in die toernooi gewen. Curro Hazeldean is baie trots op die seuns, asook hulle onberuspelike gedrag en goeie maniere. Hulle is voorwaar GameChangers!

What makes it even more exciting is that our Senior Choir for the first time participated in the Experienced Category!

Congratulations to all members and teachers involved with the choir. We also received compliments on our choir discipline and overall behaviour.

Our next competition is coming up on 26 May for the Senior Choir and 27 May for the Junior Choir. We wish them luck and look forward to another amazing performance!

10-step Matric Farewell Checklist 1. The date By now you should have a date. After receiving the formal event invitation, phone your date and make sure that they save the date!

2. The parents Your date’s parents might want to meet you. They will appreciate your effort and feel more comfortable sending their son or daughter to the dance with you.

3. The meeting point Create a central meeting point for all your friends by arranging a cheese and wine event at someone’s house on the day of the farewell. This is the perfect opportunity for last-minute photo shoots with parents.

4. The dress/suit Have a fitting to make sure that your outfit is still intact, clean and fits perfectly. If not, you still have time to have it cleaned, trimmed or fixed. Remember to take a cocktail dress with for the afterparty!

5. The shoes Don’t forget the shoes! Wear something that is stylish, complements your outfit and comfortable. Girls, you should avoid heals that hurt your feet. They can put a serious damper on your evening.

6. The accessories Add style to your outfit. Get some bling jewellery, a tie that complements your date’s dress or a handbag to carry the essentials.

7. Beauty appointments Book your hair and make-up appoinments for the morning of your matric farewell. Plan the look you are going for. Be sure to take photos with you to the appointment as examples. You can do your nails earlier the week.

8. The photoshoot Depending on your budget you can either hire a photographer or have a friend or family member take the photographs. Plan your day so that there is time for taking photographs before leaving for the event.

9. Getting there The trend is to hire a vehicle for the event – from sports cars to old collector cars – but you can use any method of transport that will get you there on time and looking as fabulous as when you left. A limousine is spacious and can transport a whole bunch of your friends. This is fun for getting excited on the way to the event!

10. The afterparty Many matric farewells have a official afterparty. They are less formal than the matric farewell, but be sure to check the dress code of the venue beforehand. For the girls a cocktail dress should be fine. For the guys long trousers, closed shoes and a collared shirt should fit the bill.

Die oggend se skenkings het aan GROOT FM se Baadjie vir ‘n Maatjie-projek gegaan en die nagenoeg 200 sakke met klere is aan Lindie Strydom oorhandig wat dit namens PEN in ontvangs geneem het.

Sy het in haar gesprek met die leerders klem gelê op die klein verskilletjies wat elkeen in ‘n ander mens se lewe kan maak en hulle aangemoedig om meer met agtergeblewe gemeenskappe betrokke te raak.

Oud-Klofie en Mev. Suid-Afrika-finalis, Margy Pretorius, het ook die Groot Gees met Sonsopkoms bygewoon. Haar boodskap aan leerders was om betrokke te bly en ‘n verskil te maak deur op hul eie sterkpunte te fokus.

Groot Gees met Sonsopkoms is op gepaste wyse afgesluit met die vrolike klanke van Jakkie Louw.

Vanjaar is die sewende keer wat die jaarlikse Van Huyssteens Oratorsfees in samewerking met advokaat Johan van Huyssteen se regsfirma aangebied Henry Serfontein, Robert Hindley, Jana van is. Tydens hierdie fees kry leerders, Huyssteen, Janu Buys. individueel en in spanverband, geleentheid om onvoorbereide toesprake oor ‘n verskeidenheid van aktuele onderwerpe (wat hulle 45 minute voor hul optrede vir die eerste keer onder oë kry) te lewer. Hierdie twee Klofie-dogters het elk nege hamers gewen. Dit beteken dat hulle in hul hoërskoolloopbane ongeveer elke jaar twee afdelings moes wen. Geen ander skool kon die Klofies dit nog nadoen nie.

In die Spanafdelings het die Klofie-matriekleerders skoonskip gemaak en ‘n navolgenswaardige voorbeeld gestel. Hulle is as wenners van die Engelse en tweetalige afdelings aangewys.

Die afgelope maand is hierdie strewe weer bevestig.

Op Donderdagaand, 12 Mei het die Raad in die Ou Raadsaal byeengekom om vir die 38ste keer die nuwe ampsdraers van die Junior Stadsraad van Pretoria te verkies. Die uitslag was as volg: Junior Burgemeester – Zahn Rijnen (Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria), Junior Onderburgemeester – Jesse McIntyre (Sutherland High School), Stadsklerk – Marco Klopper (Curro Roodeplaat), Skakelbeampte – Suné Stander (Die Hoërskool Menlopark) en Sekretaresse – Karlien Meiring (Hoërskool Waterkloof).

Die Junior Burgemeester, Zahn Rijnen, het tydens hierdie geleentheid in haar inhuldigingstoespraak die tema vir die Junior Stadsraad van Pretoria vir die jaar 2016/2017 bekendgemaak: Straal Hoop (Beam Hope). Sy het gesê dat die Raad se visie is om hoop te straal in Pretoria deur middel van verandering: ”Ons kan daardie verandering bring, daardie verandering wees.”

Sy het verder gesê dat die Junior Stadsraad hoop wil straal deur projekte en geleenthede vir die jeug van Pretoria te organiseer om fondse vir die gekose liefdadigheidsorganisasies, Gracia en The Potato Foundation, in te samel.

What originally started out as a small group of girls’ public schools from different provinces in South Africa taking part in a few sports disciplines, has grown to a very large sport and cultural festival with 21 public girls’ schools participating. This year the festival was hosted by Durban Girls’ High School and our school teams took part in chess, debating, hockey, netball, public speaking, squash, tennis and vocal ensemble. It is indeed inspiring to watch such a large group of young woman from all over South Africa eagerly participating in a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship.

We are very happy to announce the Overall Winners during this year’s Matric Experience competition.

Ester Mokambila and Tumelo Mamabolo, both from Pro Arte Alphen Park were the winners of the Matric Farewell Dress and Suit Designs. There designs will now be made for them for their Matric Farewell by Smart Guy Centurion and Claris Designs in Hatfield. They also received a mentorship prize with the Iconic SA Fashion Week Designer, JJ Schoeman. Pro Arte Alphen Park dominated the finals of this Design Competition with truly exceptional designs coming from the Pro Arte Learners.

Congratulations again to Dipuo Amo Sungula for Winning Miss Pre-Matric Experience 2016 for the second year for Pro Arte Alphen Park and for representing the school so incredibly well.

Fiona Lukhele also received a mentorship prize from Riana Mooi: Mrs Globe 2015 to help her pursue her dreams to become a model or future Miss SA. We are super proud of our students. Well done.
