Sy was nogal emosioneel uitputting. Dit was ook wonderlik om met ‘n jong regisseur en ‘n jonger generasie akteurs, met totaal ander verwysingraamwerke, te werk. Ek het baie by hulle almal geleer.

V: Jy het ‘n sepiestêr verwerf toe 7de Laan begin het. Films, sepies, verhoog – wat is jou gunsteling?

A: Sjoe, ja – my eerste TV-film was gedoen voor daar iets soos ‘n Suid-Afrikaanse sepie bestaan het! Ek dink die verhoog sal moet eerste kom, as ek sou moes kies.

A: Ek repeteer vir ‘n ongelooflike verhoogstuk, The Painted Rocks at Revolver Creek, deur

Athol Fugard.

V: Was drama ‘n roeping?

A: Dit was, maar eers laat in my skoolloopbaan. Ek het eers tale op Stellenbosch geswot, waar ek Vrydaemiddae dramaklasse by Babs Laker geloop het, en toe drama by UCT. Daarna het ek by die destydse Truk aangesluit en my verhoogloopbaan begin … en dit was dit.

V: Wat doen jy om te ontspan?

A: O, ek stap graag – die gevoel van aarde onder my voete is my redding. As ‘n gebore en getoë Vredendaller, is ek na aan die aarde in my leefwyse.

V: Gunstelingmusiek?

A: Eerste in my kop: Sade. Middeleeuse musiek. Jazz.

Going

I have always been a fan of almonds – nutty toasted almonds tossed into salads or consumed by the handful as a snack, made into almond meal and used to bake cookies and cakes. Almonds have many wonderful nutritional benefits, as they are very nutrient rich. I had an almond tree in my garden and I couldn’t wait for it to go into flower. I adored the fragrant pink and white flowers that covered the tree. I love that they are delicately flavoured and versatile and available all year round. I recently discovered almond milk at the Good Food & Wine Show in Johannesburg and decided to do some experimenting with it. I use both the sweetened and unsweetened almond milk. You can use it in making quiches, blinis, flapjacks, bread-andbutter pudding, ricotta, hot cakes, French toast, white sauce, smoothies, ice-cream, rice pudding and Panacotta, and also for soaking oats and mixing into scrambled eggs, and a lot more – it is even really yummy in tea and coffee! It can also be a substitute for dairy milk for those who have a lactose intolerance. Almond milk is also suitable for people following a vegan diet. As almond milk contains no cholesterol, it is also recommended for people suffering from heart disease or high cholesterol, and the unsweetened variety has a low glycaemic index (GI) with no added sugar, making it a suitable option for health conscious consumers. Almond milk combines the superfood health benefits of almonds with a delicious taste. It is packed with calcium as well as vitamin D and E to support strong bones and healthy skin, making it easier to manage a healthy lifestyle. I’m happy to see that it is GMO free, with no additives, MSG or preservatives. People are definitely paying more attention to their health, and so we should.

Raspberry and almond smoothie Serves 2 • 2 ½ cups almond milk (sweetened or unsweetened) • 4 ice cubes • 1 tbls runny honey • ¾ cup fresh or frozen raspberries • 1 tbls ground almonds • Place all the ingredients into liquidiser and blitz till smooth. • Pour into tall glasses and enjoy. Tip: you can strain the smoothie before you serve it. © Jenny Morris 2016 AWSUM NEWS AUGUST 2016

MESSY MASCARA

Mad Max actress Rosie HuntingtonWhitely proves that even a basic khaki shirt can be hot property.

This major mascara nono is now a DO SO!

For years, we’ve been told that clumpy mascara is a big bad and we’ve been used to formulas that keep lashes looking full but natural. But now, we’re looking back to the ‘60s icons like Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, and it’s hey hello to whacky way-out wild lashes. The spidery clumpy look is so on trend that Maybelline has launched Colossal Chaotic Lash, R134.95, which has a thicker specialty formula to ensure you get messy mascara and your lashes are way out of control. So it’s a case of the messier the better. Like you’ve partied until the sun came up! How do you nail this look? Coat your lashes with the mascara, wiggling the wand horizontally from roots to ends on your top lashes, and then swiping it vertically to cover your lower lashes. Don’t worry about blobs and bits, that’s what it’s all about!

1. DO accessorise. Amp up the army --- wear simple stacked metallic jewellery which adds some bling but is not overly girly-girly. Go for a smaller cross-body bag and opt for high heels or a pair of ballet flats instead of flat, chunky boots. 2. DON’T wear it head-to-toe. Camo is such a vibey and versatile print and looks great whether it’s pants or a top or whatever, but if you don’t want to look like Saving Private Ryan going AWOL, limit yourself to one camo piece at a time. 3. DO add color. Although these army fatigue shades work so well with black, white, and other naturals, go further and pair them with bright neon tones to give them more street cred. 4. DON’T mix it with animal print. Think about it --- they look very similar worn together so it’s way too busy. And you don’t want any hunting associations, either! 5. DO wear it with denim Camo is really edgy when worn with washed-out and distressed denim. Load on some checks and a bit of leather and you’ve got your M*A*S*H look all sorted.

Yay! At last, there’s a new eyeliner that makes it easy for fumble fingers to draw a proper line without wobbling all over the place. Maybelline’s new marvel, Master Precise Curvy™ Liquid Eyeliner, R 139.99, with a curve-hugging tip lets you line your eyelids in a wink. Use the flat side for a thick line and then use the tip to trace a trendy curved wing and a fine line along the lower lid. Bingo! You’ve got it, babe.

Health & Wellbeing 8 HEALTHY EATING GOALS Small changes can make a big difference to your health. Try incorporating at least six of the eight goals below into your diet. Commit to incorporating one new healthy eating goal each week over the next six weeks. Make half your plate fruits and vegetables: Choose red, orange, and dark-green vegetables like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and broccoli, along with other vegetables for your meals. Add fruit to meals as part of main or side dishes or as dessert. The more colourful you make your plate, the more likely you are to get the vitamins, minerals, and fibre your body needs to be healthy. Make half the grains you eat whole grains: An easy way to eat more whole grains is to switch from refined grain food to wholegrain food, for example by eating wholewheat bread instead of white bread. Read the ingredients list and choose products that list wholegrain ingredients first. Look for things like whole wheat, brown rice, bulgur, buckwheat, oatmeal, rolled oats, quinoa or wild rice. Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk: Both have the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk, but fewer calories and less saturated fat. Choose a variety of lean protein foods: Meat, poultry, seafood, dry beans or peas, eggs, nuts and seeds are considered part of the protein foods group. Select leaner cuts of ground beef (where the label says 90% lean or higher), turkey breast, or chicken breast.

Compare sodium in foods: Use the nutrition facts label to choose lower sodium versions of foods like soup, bread and frozen meals. Select canned foods labeled “low sodium,” “reduced sodium,” or “no salt added.” Drink water instead of sugary drinks: Cut calories by drinking water or unsweetened beverages. Soda, energy drinks and sports drinks are a major source of added sugar and calories in diets. Try adding a slice of lemon, lime or watermelon or a splash of 100% juice to your glass of water if you want some flavor. Eat some seafood: Seafood includes fish (such as salmon, tuna and trout) and shellfish (such as crab, mussels and oysters). Seafood has protein, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids (heart-healthy fat). Adults should try to eat at least eight ounces a week of a variety of seafood. Children can eat smaller amounts of seafood, too. Cut back on solid fats: Eat fewer foods that contain solid fats. The major sources of such foods are cakes, cookies and other desserts (often made with butter, margarine or shortening), pizza, processed and fatty meats (e.g. sausages, hot dogs, bacon, ribs) and ice cream. http://www.fitness.gov/eat-healthy/how-to-eat-healthy/

Bestmed’s You’ve Got the Power Challenge!

Does your school have the power to take on the challenge? Launched last year with 63 schools across the country, ‘We’ve Got the Power Campaign’ has now expanded. This year, healthy living will be demonstrated not only by learners, but their families too. This campaign will run from 1 August up until 30 September 2016. Sasja la Grange, Marketing and Communications Manager at Bestmed says, “Following on the success of last year’s pilot campaign, we have once again identified 63 schools across the country that will be participating in this year’s campaign. The teams are expected to showcase the benefits of healthy living by creating unique, cool and fun music videos. The campaign is both educational and rewarding. We have awesome prizes up for winners, and these include cash prizes for runnersup and other spot prizes. The overall winning school will, over and above its cash prize, receive a MUSIC CONCERT featuring Richard Stirton, Gavin Edwards, Almur Marais and Jeremy Olivier from The Voice SA.” You’ve Got the Power campaign challenge underpins Bestmed’s focus on preventative healthcare, which is validated by its wellness pillars of Be Active, Be

Safe, Be Nutri-wise, Be Fin-fit and Be Happy. The campaign challenge inspires scholars and their families to incorporate these pillars into their daily lives, and demonstrate it in the music videos. “Who says you cannot be healthy and have fun? We received encouraging feedback from last year’s launch campaign where schools learnt quite a bit about healthy lifestyle activities and enjoyed the process. We are committed to continue educating children about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle in all possible ways we can,” adds la Grange. In last year’s challenge, the schools created a music video based on Jeremy Loop’s songs and this year the music videos will be based on an upbeat song composed by Bestmed. The children will be able to sing or lip-sync the song. The videos can include choreography and fun dance moves that are cool, energetic and happy. With the aim of encouraging children to not only practise healthy lifestyle activities at school but also at home, this year Bestmed is including families to take

part in the challenge. la Grange cites, “Students spend their time both at school and at home therefore we would like them to continue practising their healthy lifestyle activities in all aspects of their lives. We also want to encourage their families to do the same.” “We look forward to receiving awesome music videos, and good luck to everyone,” concludes la Grange. You’ve Got the Power Challenge To become part of the challenge, visit www.ygtp.co.za for more information. Students are required to create a music video based on Bestmed’s song and demonstrate how healthy living can make for a better life within the school and family context. Teachers and families can also participate in the video as the aim is for the whole school to have fun. Once the video is completed, it can be uploaded on the site before the competition closes on 30 September 2016. Bestmed will announce the winners on 24 October 2016.

Glenstantia Primary Learners Sleep Out in Empathy The CEO SleepOutTM on Thursday, 28 July 2016 was such a huge success this year and last year. This year schools could register to show their solidarity and participate in the Sun International School SleepOutTM. Our date had to fall within two weeks of the CEO SleepOut date. We held our SleepOut on Friday, 5 August 2016. Our learners were very keen until they learnt that this was not just another sleep over ... Although many put their names down, only 58 learners braved the elements, so did a few parents and some courageous staff. The temperatures reached 4°C that night and everyone slept in the corridor. The learners were to arrive in their clothes, bring a sleeping bag and boxes to sleep on/in. There were many interesting structures built from the boxes. In the true spirit of empathising with the homeless, who face this and worse on a daily basis, the learners had to earn their soup and bread. They washed windows for soup and swept corridors for bread. The soup consisted of broth and noodles and a chunk of bread. By 22:30 learners were spoilt with a cup of hot chocolate (without milk or sugar, of course). By 23:00 most opted to go to bed as the temperatures had dropped. By 05:45 many struggled to get up and dispose of their boxes and pack up their beds. Fun was had by all and we are confident that the learners who spent the night will not look at a homeless person in the same light again. Donations were collected in aid of Meetsi a bo Phelo School in Mamelodi.

ReddArts Festival

Early learning School Concert This year’s Reddford House Early Learning School concert was an adaption of Around the World in Eighty Days, the classic adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, published in 1873. In the story, Phineas Fogg of London attempts to travel around the world in 80 days based on a £20,000 wager set by his friends. Lani Ogundana (age 5) performed the role of Phineas and impressed everyone with his confidence and the perfect delivery of all his lines. Each class presented a different country: England, South Africa, USA, China, Spain and France. The joyful atmosphere as the little superstars performed their songs and dances was not be missed!

This July saw the first inter-Reddford Arts Festival, which took place at Reddford Northcliff. The three Reddford campuses came together to celebrate the arts and compete in various cultural activities. For the quiz section, each school sent a quiz team of four students to field questions in various categories. After being in the lead for most of the quiz, Reddford House The Hills finally came second. The Reddford House The Hills production, which incorporated drama, dance, music and images, was an entertaining and amusing walk through the decades. At the end of the day, Kelebogile Motsumi in Grade 10 was awarded the trophy for Best Performance and the production was placed second overall.

AWSUM NEWS AUGUST 2016

THE IMPORTANTANCE OF MAKING THE CORRECT SUBJECT AND CAREER CHOICE Having 12 years of experience in career and subject assessments and psycho-legal work, I can say with all certainty that some leaners and adults who were never introduced to career and subject guidance made lifelong mistakes and ended up with frustrations, and demotivated in their careers and even in their personal lives.

Throwing time and money in the water!

Learners sometimes make career choices based on the exposure they perceive from their parents’ occupations; The ramifications of such a common mistake by any parent or leaner can be detrimental, and often irreversible. In some instances, a learner “perceive” a certain occupation to be what they want to do, but without knowing the proper consequences and job-profiling of that specific occupation. He/she inevitably ends up in a situation of being unable to meet the job requirements, overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy and despair, or totally derailed, as “this didn’t turn out the way I thought it would, and I’ve invested years and a truck load of money in an unfulfilling career path”. A good example is my nephew’s son, Gilbert, who worshipped the ground his advocate Dad walked on, and couldn’t wat for the day he could step into those successful footsteps. He went right ahead to study LLB, but after only a few court appearances, realised that it is something he will never be able to do - appearing in court in front of an entire audience! Had his parents given him the opportunity to be properly assessed years earlier, they would have discovered in time that he is much more inclined towards careers where his strategic thinking abilities could be applied, and that he would prefer to work in an environment where he is not exposed to the public. Massive damage to his self-esteem could have been avoided, had they only realized the crucial role they had to play in using the tools offered to them, to guide him in his choices, and embrace his true talents and abilities. In some instances, the learner is eager to study an occupation that sounds impressive, for example Engineering/ Doctor etc. unfortunately, only few have the cognitive ability to pass the later and more difficult University years! We at POP-Profiling therefore first assess the level Numerical, Verbal and Abstract reasoning ability of a learner and then link the outcome to an Occupational Interest Profile where a couple of possible career choices are given (based on intellectual ability)

What differentiates POP-Profiling’s methodology from your average “Quick-Fix-Household-Test”?

Our assessments are approved by the Health Professions’ Council of South Africa and are facilitated in a controlled environment under supervision of registered Psychologists. Assessments are Internationally and locally recognition, and compared to huge norm groups to ensure high reliability and Validity. Occupational Interest Profile (OIP) in specific has been developed on a large sample of individuals drawn from a wide range of occupational groups Can be compared against International and local norm groups Ever felt completely lost in the jungle of career choices, subject choices, what school to choose for your child's needs? It's a scary thought to be all alone during these Watershed-decision-making-moments of one's life. But fear no more.... We can facilitate your decision making process in a professional, scientifically benchmarked environment, which will enable you to make an informed and well thought through decision on these crucial aspects of your career path. We measure candidates’ levels of numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning abilities. This we link to their occupational interest profiles, and provide the candidates with several career choices, based on their two top measured fields of interest. Individuals of various educational backgrounds and cultural groups can thus be accurately assessed, in context of South African norms and reliabilities. Example Report Professional Occupational and Personality Profiling is being done under the supervision of registered psychologists with extensive experience in Profiling and Corporate Psychology. Assessments, accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) are applied to obtain accurate outcome based results, with detailed reports on career and personal development paths. We specialise in group psychometric testing at schools, colleges, training facilities, etc. under close supervision of a qualified invigilator. Personality profiling can be done individually or in groups under supervision. We would love to hear from you to understand your need and provide profiling suggestions accordingly. Please send an email with basic or detailed information to Sonet or Elmarie. We'll gladly assist telephonically, per e-mail or make an appointment to come and see you at no cost for the first consultation, travelling fees outside Gauteng excluded.

General Reasoning Assessment - Numerical Reasoning - Verbal Reasoning - Abstract Reasoning

* Supervised Assessments can be taken individually or in groups, electronically or per booklet in Afrikaans or English. *All ability Assessments are done under supervision of qualified psychologists. Comprehensive feedback, benchmarked against SA Norms, is available 24h after assessment.

Occupational Interest Profiling

Assess vocational interests and work needs - South African norms for scholars are applied - Combines a basic 5 scale personality measure (work needs) with work interests in one questionnaire - Measures work areas which the individual would enjoy - Reports integrate the OIP results with that of ability test to produce a report that makes career recommendations while taking level of ability into account - South African report links OIP scales to nearly 600 South African careers

Real life 4 kids We are all very excited about the Grade 5 learners playing Real Life 4 Kids in Term 3. This entails an interactive approach to teaching and learning real-life concepts. Learners are introduced to the concepts of banking, insurance, driver’s licences, buying property, building a house, tendering for building a public works project, and owning a business. The Grade 5 learners also have the opportunity to do different jobs each week such as being the policeman, doctor, bus conductor, weatherman and journalist. Through each of these modules certain concepts are learnt. This is an exciting 21st century approach to teaching that is fun and exciting as well as effective.
