2018 PRESTIGE ATLETIEKBYEENKOMS Die 2018 Prestige-atletiekbyeenkoms vind plaas op Vrydag, 9 Februarie 2018 by die Dal Josafat-atletiekstadion in Paarl.

Die toegangsfooi is R25,00 vir alle toeskouers.

‘n Kort geskiedenis van die Prestige-atletiekbyeenkoms

Die oorspronklike Prestigeatletiekbyeenkoms het sy ontstaan in 2009 gehad toe die onderskeie skole se atletiekhoofde die behoefte geïdentifiseer het om as een span aan spankompetisies deel te neem. Tot in daardie stadium was die skole uitgesluit van sekere kompetisies, aangesien hulle enkelgeslagspanne het, selfs al het die individuele skole se spanne oor ‘n paar seisoene hulle afsonderlike kompetisies gewen.

Een jaar by die Sentraal Top 10 in Bloemfontein het Bloemhof die dogtersafdeling gewen en Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) die seunsafdeling, maar ‘n ander skool het die algehele kompetisie gewen, bloot omdat Bloemhof en PRG nie as een span mag getel het nie.

Die idee om ‘n byeenkoms te skep waar die skole as een span kan deelneem, het met erns vlerke gekry.

Aanvanklik was die deelnemende spanne Bloemhof, PRG, Paarl Gimnasium en DF Malan. DF Malan was in daardie stadium die sterkste skool in die Wes-Kaap en het die MTBS Interskole ‘n hele paar keer in ‘n ry verower.

Die eerste paar Prestigebyeenkomste was baie naby in terme van die algehele punte en Paarl Gim is as aanvanklike kampioene gekroon.

Na ‘n paar jaar het DF Malan egter gevoel hulle kompeteer nie meer nie en het hulle die kompetisie verlaat. Paarl Boys’ High en Paarl Girls’ High het daarna in hulle plek aan boord gekom.

Verwelkoming deur Hoër Jongenskool Paarl Vanjaar bied Hoër Jongenskool Paarl met trots die Prestige-atletiekbyeenkoms aan.

Die jaar 2018 is uiteindelik hier, en daarmee saam die 150-jaarvieringe van die HJS. Laat my dan eerstens toe om elkeen ’n wonderlike jaar toe te wens. Mag al u tot-dusver-onvervulde drome waar word.

Dit is dan ook ’n voorreg om medeaanbieder van die Prestigeatletiekbyeenkoms te wees tydens die 150-jaarvieringe. Laat my hiermee toe om ’n woord van dank te rig aan die HMS vir hul hulp met die reëlings, sowel as ’n ieder en ’n elk wat ook bydra tot die sukses van die byeenkoms. Die Drakenstein-munisipaliteit word ook bedank vir die pragtige Dal Josafat-stadion tot ons beskikking gestel.

Athletics, or track-and-field as the Americans would call it, is one of the oldest sporting codes known to man. In ancient times, Greeks and Romans already spent their time gleefully chucking javelins and discuses about, all the time naked as larks (and men only, of course). The introduction of clothing reduced the risk of painful injury (apparently resulting in some gentlemen having to trade athletics for soprano choir singing at times) and paved the way for all genders to take part, and of course for spectators to be able to see them performing. In spite of all this, it remains a lonely sport, where oft the biggest competition is with oneself. I would therefore like to wish every athlete the best in their endeavours. May you quickly come to the understanding that the only limits and boundaries to one’s ability and self-actualization are those we create ourselves.

Let us also remember that being a part of this athletics event, and to do so in the midst of beautiful Paarl, is an absolute privilege, even in the grip of a terrifying drought. Let us then also pay homage to our Heavenly Father for this day.

Boishaai ready to fire

at Prestige

It was in 2013 that Paarl Boys High joined the Prestige Athletics Meeting for the first time (at Coetzenburg). This set in motion a host of events that followed from this initial participation.

Celebrating 150 years of existence in 2018, Boishaai will be hosting the Prestige Athletics meeting in Paarl.

Coached by some of the schools' best former Meeting Programme with athletes, Boishaai Springbok javelin athlete Pietie will most certainly Roux (son of famous PBH Old have their sights set Boy Mannetjies Roux). on improving their incredible 2017 results. The competing schools are Boishaai, Paarl Girls High, Paarl Gymnasium, Paul Roos Gymnasium and Bloemhof. The combo of four of these aforementioned schools, however, changes the dynamics of the support for these talented athletes on the day. Boishaai and Girls High form a team simply known by the abbreviation, GHBH (Girls High / Boishaai), while Paul Roos and fellow Stellenbosch school Bloemhof team up as BloemRoos. Paarl

Gymnasium makes up the fifth (essentially the third) team at the Prestige Athletics.

Prior to Boishaai's inclusion, DF Malan was part of Prestige, but it was decided in the build-up to 2013 that Boishaai will be joining the team. DF Malan subsequently withdrew from the competition. That first gathering in 2013 saw BloemRoos claim the honours with Gimmies in close second and not too far behind, GHBH. Despite losing out on the final podium gold, five meeting records were set by GHBH. This year, a host of talented coaches will have their sights set on improving on the last five meetings by getting the GHBH athletes ready, specifically the Boishaai coaches. In 2017 it was only the Paarl-based schools that participated following an outbreak of measles in the Stellenbosch area, meaning the omission of BloemRoos from the Prestige for the first time since inception. This year promises to be even more exciting, as the Stellenbosch athletes will most certainly be tested to the extremes by GHBH and Gimmies.

The speedsters are coached by former Boland hurdles and sprinter, David Sadie, who along with Kurt Ruiters and Sydney Bartlett will be responsible for ensuring that the hurdle and sprinting boys are ready to take on some of the province's best on the tartan. The discus athletes are coached by Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Tania Malherbe, a former national champion as well, looks

after the middle distance runners, while Abré van Heerden and Ruan Brits are among the coaching staff ensuring the athletes get the best training possible.

Last year, GHBH obtained 30 first, 30 second, 29 third and 42 fourth places. Specifically, Boishaai athletes improved on six meeting records. Not only was the record books rewritten by the 150-year-old school, but they also won the U14 and U15 sections for boys, while the U14A, 15A, 17A, U19A relay teams made a clean sweep in the respective race categories.

The bar has most certainly been set by the Boishaai athletes at last year's meeting, and the focus will most certainly be on trying to improve on previous years and maintain their record-breaking abilities. Given that this year it will be hosted by one of the oldest school in the country, and one with a rich history of sporting legends, Boishaai supporters (and by extension Girls High) can be assured of an incredible experience in Paarl.

GHBH will want to remember the 2018 Prestige for two things: • it was the year that Boishaai celebrated 150 years • it could also be the year that GHBH finally edge past BloemRoos and Gimmies to claim the number one spot.

Na 7 minute sal die aankondiger summier ’n span stop indien hulle steeds besig is. Die spanne besluit self wat hulle wil doen.
