AWSUMCelebrity Interview

Minki van der Westhuizen Minki van der Westhuizen is one of South Africa’s most recognisable faces. As a top model, she has graced countless magazine covers. Recently, she has become more known as a popular television presenter. We caught up with her to chat about Boer Soek ‘n Vrou, motherhood, and life back in South Africa. Q: You are known worldwide as a top model. How did it happen that you became a television presenter, first for the magazine show Pasella and now for the popular reality series Boer Soek ‘n Vrou? A: Pasella’s producer asked me back in 2007 if I would be interested in presenting on TV. I didn’t even think twice! I’ve always wanted to work in the television industry, and when the opportunity came to be the host on the new season of Boer Soek ‘n Vrou, I was over the moon. Q: What do enjoy most about Boer Soek ‘n Vrou? Which ‘boer’ would you say is AWSUM? A: Seeing all the beautiful parts of the country – I have just realised again how stunning and diverse our country is! The ‘boere’ are all AWSUM!! Q Another Boer Soek ‘n Vrou question … the question on everyone’s lips is whether any of the ‘boere’ tried to impress you rather than the women on the farm? A Nooooo, I never got that impression! They know I am not available. They are all very proud of their farms and I have enjoyed being part of their farming for a day.

Page 2

AWSUM NEWS NOVEMBER 2016

Q: What is your advice for first dates? Do first impressions count? A: First impressions are very important – maybe you never see the person again, and that will be the impression the person has of you. Just be yourself – then you can never go wrong. Q: You and your young family returned at the end of last year to South Africa after almost six years in London. What was life like there? What did you miss about South Africa? How have you adapted back in South Africa? A: We were very happy in London, and England will always be special for us. But nothing can trump our happiness to be back in South Africa! We are all thriving and I think the girls have all but forgotten the UK. We adapted very easily, as if we have never been away. I have missed my parents a lot, as well as the climate and ‘lekker’ culture. Also, our beautiful nature and mountains. Q: You have two little girls, Katerien (3) and Elise (2). How has motherhood changed your life? What is the best thing about being a mom? A: The love and attention and cute words and hugs and wet kisses and dirty little hands … I am crazy for each moment of being a mom! Motherhood has taught me to not be so focused on myself. And I have learned patience! Q: Your husband, Ernst Joubert, was well-known as rugby player. What does he do these days? A: He is Head of Operations at Stellenbosch Academy of Sport Rugby Institute and enjoying this new role in the sport.

Help at hand to improve SA’s financial literacy – and it’s free! South Africa is at the bottom of the financial literacy class according to a recent study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). But help is on its way for all South Africans in the form of a free financial literacy app – the Grey High App. Grey High School educator Simon Sonderup’s 2014 life-skills booklet Don’t Be Fooled, Make Smart Decisions has been converted into the Grey High App by Brydon Leonard of Hello World Code. “It’s aimed at those starting out in life – school leavers and graduates – and is available in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa” says Sonderup. “The app aims to promote responsible financial management so that users can avoid making financial mistakes as they start their working lives. I strongly believe that having financial knowledge now will save financial stress later and equip youngsters to avoid potential pitfalls in everyday life.” “But,” adds Paul Leonard, CFP and regional head (EC) at Citadel, who has partnered with this project, “this app has many more uses. Teachers can use it as a resource for themselves as well as a classroom tool. The app complements the Mathematical Literacy and Life Orientation syllabuses and the content can serve as a point of departure for teaching concepts in these two subjects.” It may be aimed at school leavers and graduates, but the app has practical knowledge and application for anyone wishing to learn more about financial matters and to develop crucial life skills. The app provides information on all aspects of personal finance, from buying a car to understanding compound interest to managing debt and credit rating. Each topic looks at certain preconceptions which readers may have, such as: “I will look after things; I don’t need insurance” and “A car is cheap to own.” The reality is then discussed – for example, why certain insurance is worth having and that cars are actually expensive in South Africa.

Page 4

AWSUM NEWS NOVEMBER 2016

Users will learn about how each aspect of personal finance works, including examples and calculations. In the retirement section, for example, a table shows how much you would need to save each month at different starting ages in order to generate R10 000 a month when you retire. Common pitfalls are also explained and a list of tips is provided to help readers make the best decision. Sonderup continues, “It is important to note that the information provided in the app should not be taken as financial advice, but rather for financial empowerment. One of the aims is to contribute towards reducing the personal debt of South Africans – debt is a noose from which it is hard to escape, which further entrenches poverty.”

Paul Leonard (CFP and EC Regional Chair), Mr Neil Crawford (Rector of Grey High School), Brydon Leonard (Hello World Code), and Simon Sonderup (author and teacher at Grey High School).

First Lego League

Cricket – Pearson vs St Andrews College

Pearson High School ended the 2016 cricket season on a high note as Raeez Harrison played a crucial part helping his team to an emphatic 1 run win as they hosted St Andrews College on Saturday. Winning the toss, St Andrews elected to bowl first in the annual 50 over match in overcast, windy conditions. College drew first blood as Pearson struggled at 7/2. Regular wickets put the home team under immense pressure throughout their innings. With the score on 86/8, the Pearson team were in serious trouble, but Harrison fought hard and played a mature knock of 59 not out of 87 balls to give his team a fighting chance as the hosts posted 153/10. Harrison’s knock included 2 boundaries and 3 sixes while Keeran Forbes chipped in with a handy 25 of 51 balls. James Quarmby was the pick of the College bowlers and returned figures of 3/40 in his 10 overs. After the lunch break, the Pearson bowlers kept the College batsman at bay as they picked up 2 early wickets as College struggled at 16/2. With the score on 47/4 the game was well set-up, but a partnership of 59 of 114 balls between Ross Vides (36 of 81 balls) and Murray Koste seemingly put the game beyond the Pearson side. The breakthrough eventually came for the home team with the score on 106 after a superb spell of bowling from Alex Draai as he removed Koste for 34. The Pearson bowlers started believing and pushed the game into the last 4 overs with College still needing 23 runs for victory. Harrison and captain Daniel Doyle were intrusted to bowl the last 24 balls. With 11 needed from 12 balls, Doyle conceded 4 runs in his overs to give Harrison a sporting chance to defend 8 runs in the last over. With a ball to go, College needed 3 to win and 2 to tie. The ball was struck to Doyle, fielding at long on, who kept a cool head and returned to ball to the keepers’ end as Jarod Froneman gathered to run out the last St Andrews batsman to leave them 1 run short of victory. Harrison returned figures of 2/38 in 9 overs while Draai returned excellent figures of 2/18 in his 10 overs.
