Idees vir ’n Warm Winterhart-projek

D

ie winter is hier! Gaan kyk ’n bietjie in jou kas – en loer sommer in jou broer of suster of ma of pa s’n – en tel ’n bietjie

Onthou die Engelse spreekwoord: “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure!” MAAK KLEINGELD GROOT!

LIFESTYLE - MATRIC MAGIC 2 JUNE 2014 http://maxmatric.com/ matric-dance/

Music & your ears ...

our matric dance can be one of the most spectacular nights of your schooling career and will be a memory that you never forget. But to get the most out of your night, you need to be sufficiently prepared so that you can have a stress-free, fun evening! HOW TO PREPARE - GIRLS: * The early bird catches the worm
If you are going to get your hair, nails and make-up done by professionals, it is best to book your appointment at least 1 month in advanced to secure your spot before the other girls steal all the good ones! * Don’t rush the fun
Give yourself enough time on the day of the dance. * Don’t book all your appointments on top of one another. Start your first appointment early (about 12) so that you have spare time if any appointments run late and so that you have enough time to dress and take plenty of photos. OUTFIT 911
 * Let’s be honest, split seams and pigeon-toed waddles in high heels just aren’t attractive. So, when choosing a dress, shoes and jewelry, opt for something comfortableyou will be spending approximately 6-7 hours in your outfit. * Make sure you can sit in the dress comfortably and walk in your shoes without cringing, especially if you plan on dancing the night away. HOW TO PREPARE - GUYS * Suite up
When choosing a suite, go for an outfit that you won’t get too hot in. You will probably spend most of the night without your blazer on, so make sure your shirt underneath is looking snazzy. * It’s a good idea to order/book your suite about 2-3 months before the dance.

BOYS AND GIRLS DATE DILEMMAS
 * To get the most out of your night, you should try to pick a date who you can talk to easily and who you get along with well. * Also, you need to give your date enough time to prepare themselves for your big night, so don’t leave the asking part for too late. Asking two months prior to the dance gives your date enough time to sort out their necessary arrangements. KEEP IT CLEAN
 * You may already be 18, but help a brother out and keep it clean for this once? * Stay clear of alcohol, smoking and drugs before and during the dance. Its best not to indulge afterwards too because this really is a night that you want to remember… * Out of respect for your peers, teachers, parents, organizing committee and school, be well behaved and have some good oldfashioned innocent fun! * Don’t leave the party till after the dance WHAT TO EXPECT? * On the night
At the dance itself, there will be plenty of mingling and chatting. From the arrivals to the photos, there will be a great deal of attention on you, so prepare yourself for all the jealous eyes. . . * Food will be served and you may have to listen to some speeches and thank you’s. Clap politely and keep the sarcastic comments to a minimum. You will be smiling A LOT, so prepare for sore cheeks. All those photos will take their toll… * Lastly, just remember the whole night is aimed at allowing you to celebrate your 12 years of schooling in an enjoyable way with your friends. Make the night memory you will always cherish.

Many of us are experiencing a new found love for i-pods and other earphone listening music devices. They are a sanctuary from loud traffic noise and work tasks. Every time we put them in our ears, we can however not stop ourselves from hearing our parents’ ever echoing words: “Put that softer or you’ll go deaf!” The reality is that our parents were absolutely right. Listening to loud music or any other loud sounds can cause permanent, irreversible hearing damage. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have concluded that any sound louder than 85dB can cause permanent hearing damage. Most listening devices have a maximum output of 103dB. At this level, only 15 minutes of listening can and probably will cause permanent hearing damage. When it comes to music devices, the golden rule is listening to music at a volume no louder than 80% (90dB) on your music device. Even then, it is important to listen at this level for no more than 90 minutes daily. After 90 minutes of listening, our hearing cells or cochlear hair cells are tired, and need a day or so to rest and recover. Music has many positive effects on our emotional wellbeing and is therefore an

important part of our everyday lives. We should however never forget about the wellbeing of our ears and hearing abilities. Once you have a hearing loss, you will never be able to enjoy the music as well as when you first developed your initial love for it. “My car is capable of driving 120 miles an hour (193km/h) down the streets, but as society we have set speed limits because those are safer. We need to set some sort of speed limit for music listening.” – Dr. Cory Portnuff (University of Colorado)

HANDY HINTS FOR YOUR HOME

These Handy Hints will remind you of the ways you can save around the home – some you may be able to do, and others you may not be able to do, but every single one of them can help you save money and energy. Even if you only choose one or two, it all adds up!

FRIDGE/FREEZER

• Check seals and doors. Doors need to close firmly. • Check the temperature. Fridges work best between 3° and 5°, freezers work best between -15° and -18°. • Room to breathe. Fridges and freezers run better with air circulating around them.

HEATING

• Check the temperature. Keep the room temperature between 18° and 21° in winter. • Seal those cracks and gaps with blockers like a door ‘snake’ • Throw on a jersey so you can turn your heater down • Keep the curtains closed to keep the warmth in.

HOT WATER

• Shorten your shower to save water, money and energy! • Fix those dripping taps. They can waste up to 1 litre of water/hour • Hand wash single dishes instead of using the dishwasher

• Try a front loader washing machine they use less water and up to 60% less energy

ELECTRIC PUMPS

• Use the right size, and don’t pay for wasted energy • Install a timer, and only use it in off peak times or when you need to • Use a pool cover, this can reduce the need for filtering.

Pearson High School 6 JUNE 2014 Pearson Proms Concert

Pearson high school’s music department presented yet another successful proms concert on Friday, 9 May in the Deary hall. The sold out evening has proved that Pearson’s music department offers music of a high standard and of the finest quality. Since its arrival in 2010, the annual proms concert is definitely the music department’s highlight of the year. More than 100 music learners took part in this enjoyable and enriching evening, ensuring that audience members, of all ages, could find the music pleasing on the ear and shouting endlessly for an encore. The first half featured the string ensemble, under the guidance of Nicholas Fidler, the Pearson choir, directed

Granny Tea

Pearson’s Interacters hosted a very successful Granny Tea on Friday, 16 May 2014. Grannies and a couple of grandpas from old age homes in the Summerstrand community were entertained by Interact members serving as hostesses. Each hostess decorated her table according to her own style and the Deary Hall was transformed into a colourful tea parlour. The 150 seniors citizens experienced true Pearson hospitality and talent. Some talented Pearson musicians entertained the

crowd: Daniel Black brought back some memories with his rendition of “Mull of Kingtyre”, while Emma Pieters brought a modern touch with her version of John Legend’s “All of me”. But undoubtedly the highlight for the guests was “Phata Phata” the well known Miriam Makeba song performed by Lilo Shingwayo. Outgoing president, Leah Brink, ran a fun entertainment quiz with prizes for each table. Thereafter Micaela Coetzee had the grannies doing some line-dancing to “Cotton eye Joe.”

by Petrus Meyer, the Wind Band, conducted by Alet Finlaison, and the Jazz band, conducted by Leon Piron. The Pearson Concert band, under the baton of Petrus Meyer, took over the stage after interval. A wide variety of music was presented on the evening, ranging from Classic standards to Pop medleys, making it difficult for the audience member to sit still to. The music department is in the process of giving more attention to strings and hope to appoint a string teacher from next year on. Do not miss out on next year’s proms concert, since it promised to be even more exciting and even better.

Hockey The Pearson Girls Hockey teams dominated the fixture, winning all their matches. The Pearson First Team recorded yet another good result after beating Collegiate and Victoria Park in their previous two matches. In what turned out to be a very one sided game, the Pearson girls took control from the outset. The goals came from Michaela Kliment and Caitlin Gouws who put Pearson on the score board early in the first half. The dominant Pearson defence did not allow Brandwag to cross the half way line once and the Pearson team

also looked strong on attack to give then yet other well-earned 2-0 victory.
