A special word of thanks to all involved in organising this momentous occasion. The contribution of PRG staff and parents, the coaches and managers of both schools and the officials cannot be ignored. “Sport has the power to change the world,” Mandela said. “It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.” May the weekend exemplify Paul Roos’s motto ‘Semper Splendidior’ - always better, always more excellent. This is your time to be your best self, to be focused and motivated, standing together as a team and measuring achievements not only by a score on a scoreboard but by the level of sportmanship, pride, respect and gentlemanship displayed on and off the field. Here’s to a great experience for all involved in particular as it traditionally marks the end of a season - what a high note to end it on. KAPTEIN VAN GREY COLLEGE SE EERSTE RUGBYSPAN

Christian le Roux

ALEXI TYROPOLIS

What has pre-season been like for this team, and what has it revealed about the character, attitude and commitment of the squad? Pre-season has been tough, but it has brought us closer together as a team. Every player has been willing to work hard, push through difficult sessions and hold one another accountable every day. It has also shown the drive within this group and the number of hours the boys are willing to put in. What makes this year’s first team different from previous teams, and why should supporters be excited to watch you play this season? This team has a special bond both on and off the field. We trust one another, enjoy playing together and are all willing to put the team first. Supporters can expect a team that plays with intensity, physicality and passion, while never giving up, regardless of what the scoreboard says. This year has had a few ups and downs, but that has never broken the team’s willingness to show up each day. What goes through your mind in the moments before you step onto the court or field wearing your school colours, and what does that opportunity mean to you personally? Before every game, I remind myself how privileged I am to wear the Grey College jersey. I think about everyone who has represented the school before us, my family, my teammates and the responsibility that comes with leading the team. It is an honour that I never take for granted. Every strong team has its own identity – how would you describe your team’s playing style, attitude and overall spirit? I think we are a physical, disciplined and united team. We want to dominate the basics, work hard for one another and enjoy ourselves on the field. Our attitude towards rugby is excellent, and we are willing to do whatever it takes to put the team first. What standard have you and your team set for yourselves this season, beyond simply winning matches? Our goal is to build a culture in which everyone gives their absolute best every day. We want to be known for our discipline, respect and teamwork. If we consistently meet those standards, we will fulfil our goal of maintaining Grey College’s culture and traditions. Which fixture stands out most on the calendar for you, and what makes that match especially important to the team? Every fixture is important because every team deserves our respect, but if I had to choose, I would say Paul Roos. It is our last game, it is an incredible rivalry, and the spirit and culture of the two schools are similar. It will be an emotional day. Who in this squad do you think could surprise people this season, and what makes that person a player to watch? A few players come to mind who have made a big impact this year. One teammate who stands out has an incredible work rate, learns quickly and performs well under pressure. Lamla is someone who has impressed me with how much he has contributed throughout the season. }ìÐ ďĴìÐī œř Ĵď ÅÆā řďķī ĮÆìďďă On derby day, everything that makes South African school communities remarkable is on display.

Two of the country's most respected schools. Proud rugby traditions that have produced generations of outstanding players and Springboks. Stands packed with parents, old boys and supporters who have travelled across provinces to be here — not because they have to, but because backing their school is simply what they do. That same instinct — the willingness of a community to support its school — is what Everything School was built around.

Everything School is a South African schoolsupport platform and part of TieMedia. We connect schools and parents with carefully selected suppliers across many of the categories they already use, including stationery, printing, technology, school bags, recruitment, sponsorships, security and utility cost savings.

partnerships and negotiated pricing, with every rand earned tracked and reported transparently to the school.

whether for operational needs, equipment, facilities, fundraising goals or a speciũc school project.

But what makes the model different is where some of that value goes.

In practice, this means that something as ordinary as buying next year's stationery pack, a new school bag or a learner diary can become another way of supporting your school. The purchase stays the same. Who beneũts from it changes.

Days like today remind us that a school is never just a timetable, a building or a uniform. It is a community that shows up — in the stands, alongside the ũeld, at school events and, increasingly, through the everyday choices families make.

Through wÆìďďă ķÆāĮ, participating schools can earn whenever their families purchase from approved Everything School partners. qīÐĊĴĮ Ĩř ĊďĴìðĊæ ÐŘĴīȣ The beneũt is created through collective buying power, preferred

EERSTESPAN HOKKIE

KAPTEIN VAN DIE EERSTESPAN HOKKIESEUNS: PAUL ROOS What has pre-season been like for this team, and what has it revealed about the character, attitude and commitment of the squad? Pre-season training with the team was probably some of the most fun I’ve had, hockey-wise, this year. It showed us our potential and what we could truly achieve this season. We went to the Coastal Cup festival in March and lost our first game against DHS. Seeing the boys bounce back and treat the loss as a learning opportunity rather than something to sulk about was a real highlight for me. It emphasised their emotional maturity, their immense love for their school in the way they put their egos aside, and their love for the team in the way they stuck together. Seth Paterson (k)

What makes this year’s first team different from previous teams, and why should supporters be excited to watch you play this season? What makes this team different is the brand of hockey we play. As professional as we are in terms of how many sessions we have and the way we train, this team is still just a group of boys who love the game and want to have fun. That is something that is truly evident on the field – in the way the ball moves, in seeing everyone smile and laugh, and in watching everything come together. It is genuinely a joy to watch as a spectator and supporter. What goes through your mind in the moments before you step onto the field wearing your school colours, and what does that opportunity mean to you personally? Representing Paul Roos and captaining the first team is something I hold very close to my heart. When I pull the maroon jersey over my head, I am filled with a sense of pride in my school and the legacy left behind. Beyond that, seeing the men I get to step onto the turf with fills me with love and confidence. Knowing how hard these guys have worked to get where they are and how much it means to them is truly inspiring. Captaining this team and leading them onto the field is a great honour and something I will never take for granted. Every strong team has its own identity – how would you describe your team’s playing style, attitude and overall spirit? I would describe us as a team that simply loves and enjoys the game. We are a family, and we believe that without a strong team culture, talent is secondary. Our playing style is fast and exciting, which keeps spectators engaged and the game electric.

KAPTEIN VAN DIE EERSTESPAN HOKKIESEUNS: GREY KOLLEGE

What has pre-season been like for this team, and what has it revealed about the character, attitude and commitment of the squad? Pre-season was extremely tough. The fitness sessions were brutal, but they brought out a real sense of brotherhood among the boys. They taught us how to remain resilient during difficult moments. Even when players were cramping and our legs were sore, we kept going. What makes this year’s first team different from previous teams, and why should supporters be excited to watch you play this season? We have faced many obstacles, yet we are still willing to give 110% for every second of every game.

What goes through your mind in the moments before you step onto the field wearing your school colours, and what does that opportunity mean to you personally? I feel extremely nervous, but I visualise myself doing positive things on the field. I remind myself that this is an incredible opportunity and think about all the historic players whom my teammates and I represent when we wear these jerseys. Every strong team has its own identity – how would you describe your team’s playing style, attitude and overall spirit? We have a never-say-die attitude because we believe that giving up is never an option. We may not always play the prettiest hockey, but every single player will give 100% on the turf. What standard have you and your team set for yourselves this season, beyond simply winning matches? We have a system called ‘double faults’, which means that we cannot make two mistakes in a row. It keeps us accountable for our actions and for the standard we bring to every training session. Which fixture stands out most on the calendar for you, and what makes that match especially important to the team? Grey High is one that really stands out. As a player, I have never beaten a Grey High side, and as a team we understand the history of the derby and the competitive nature of the fixture, especially because they are our brother school.
