Neil Powell
Johannes Daniel Powell is one of South Africa's most successful rugby coaches in the last ten years. Better known as Neil, he is an excellent example of what a coach should have to create a winning culture and healthy coaching environment.
Powell took over from previous Springbok Sevens head coach, Paul Treu, right before the 2013 edition of the South African leg of the World Sevens Series. Despite his many accolades, the former Free Cheetahs star is first and foremost a family man before a World Sevens Series winning coach. "My family is very important to me," Powell told Awsum News in an exclusive interview. "My wife and kids always come first and I try to maintain the balance between my hectic coaching and personal life, by not bringing work home." The former scrumhalf firmly believes in prioritising his time spent with his family when he gets home in the evening, a philosophy not often heard of in the world of professional rugby. This is by no means an excuse for him to shut himself off completely, but, this, he says is how he and his family maintains a healthy environment at home. "I try not to take work home, but if I do, I won't work while my family is awake, that way I get to spend more time with them. I would rather get up around 4 or 5 am if I need to get some work done. I am a firm believer that I need to turn in for the night the same time my family does. An exception would be made for maybe one night of the week, but most of the time I try to avoid working at home." Under his guidance, the Blitzboks have secured eleven tournament wins, a bronze Olympic medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, a Commonwealth Gold medal in 2014 in Scotland and recently the 2016/17 HSBC World Sevens Series title. Powell has not only developed and created a winning culture, but also a warm family-like environment whereby his players have grown into world-class players. The hectic traveling and working schedule of a world-class professional coach does take its toll on quality time away from his family. It isn't always all glitz and glamour like the public perceives it to be. Coach Neil and his family have put a few rules in place to balance the scales. One of these rules is that they breakaway for at least two days after he has returned from traveling with the Springbok Sevens squad. "There is always someone that wants to see you or some function that our friends want us to go to, but because I travel for up to two and half weeks at a time, I take my family away, after returning from tour, for a couple of days. Just me, my wife and our kids. I try to make up for the time I spend away from home."
Keeping the Passion Burning
The Blitzbok head coach, however, is not naive to think that he can cut himself completely from the entire sporting world when he gets home to Casa del Powell, but they remain intentional to have dad and hubby's work not influence the family time during the periods that he isn't on tour. "It is difficult, especially these days with social media and all the various media platforms to switch yourself off completely from the world, but I will rather watch some soccer with my kids than rugby. We also have a rule in the house in that we eat at the table and not in front of the television. It just helps to build a healthier and more grounded family environment." This philosophy is somewhat evident in the Blitzboks family, with coach Powell being the father-figure for the Blitzboks it testifies to a successful, healthy and warm environment. Touring life can be daunting, not only on the players but on the coaches as well. It can become very lonely, but Powell believes the manner in which he conducts himself, runs his household and family allows him to remain motivated and inspired. "It does get very lonely on tour, yes," Powell added when asked if he misses home a lot while finding himself in some of the world's major cities. "I often find myself looking at a photo of my family and telling myself that what I do is for them. "I also have a winning drive within myself, it's not that I enjoy winning, I just don't like losing. I admit I am a bad loser," Powell said candidly. The future of Springbok Sevens rugby is in good hands, with Powell and his charges set to prepare for the Rugby World Cup Sevens as well as the Commonwealth Games, both set to take place later this year. The Stellenbosch based coach has not only seemingly created a winning culture and high-performance environment. but he remains passionate about Springbok Rugby, the latter being one of his biggest drives in creating a world-class team.
"I have an immense passion for Springbok rugby as a whole and will always keep this passion burning."

The poor potato has been banned, demonized and is now an outcast, and the low-carb craze has given it a bad reputation, well not in my book, this delicious vegetable is one of my favourite starches and I just can’t turn my back on it. Potatoes are so versatile, you can smash them, mash them, squish and squash them, bake and roast them, boil and fry them, use them in cakes and breads. The humble potato is an edible tuber that was first cultivated in the Andes and in the early 16th century. Spanish explorers brought the potato back to Europe from their South American expeditions and back then it was thought to be completely inedible and even poisonous, well it is not inedible or poisonous, it is packed with a variety of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that ward off disease and benefit human health. Did you know… that the potato is a relative of tobacco and the tomato. Potato actually comes from the Spanish world patata, potatoes have more potassium than bananas, potatoes became the first food to grow in space when potato plants were taken aboard the space shuttle Columbia in 1995, Australians eat about 60kg of potatoes per person each year. Apparently humans can survive on a diet of just potatoes, and milk or butter, which contain Vitamin A and D, the only vitamins missing from the humble spud. One medium potato contains 45 percent of the daily recommended amount of vitamin C. Potatoes also contain potassium, B6, fiber and numerous other vitamins and minerals. Remember potatoes exposed to bright light develop green patches and this green skin contains the toxin ‘solanine’ which can cause cramps, headache, diarrhoea, and fever, so don’t eat the green skin, you can cut it away and that will make the rest of the potato safe to eat. Plastic bags won’t allow potatoes to breathe, and will shorten their shelf life considerably, so remove them from their plastic bag, if they came in one and keep them in a cool dark place.
The Perfect Baked potato
• 1 potato per person and two for me • Now scrub your potatoes until they are very clean. Then, make sure that they are very dry. • Rub olive oil all over the potatoes and then coat them in salt. • Prick the potatoes all over to allow air to escape as they bake, place onto a baking tray and them till the skins are crisp and the flesh gives when they are pressed. • Remove and split and fill with lots of yummy salted butter.

Hatties Shine at BDPT Athletics meeting
After weeks of good preparation, the HTS Athletics team set out to prove a point at the annual athletics meeting at the Bellville Velodrome track. As usual our supporters got the spirits up with a very good rendition of their war cry, which set the tone for a good day. There were good performances from our stalwarts, Wilcriff Jere (shot-put U19), Hayden Ruiters (100,200m), Anda Kawe (shot put U17), Imaan Hillberg (Long jump U19), but we were blown away by our new crop of junior athletes who did exceptionally well on the day. Among our young achievers were, Zhandre-Pierre Small who earned 3 gold medals (Javelin, Discus & Shot put U14), but the achievement of the day was Fidehl Hendricks who broke the U14 High jump record (1.70m). Jaden Gordon (Shot put U15) Owen Booysen (800 and 1500m U15) demolished his opponents with powerful finishes on the track. Apart from not competing very well on the broader points table, we achieved a lot with our athletes on the day and a special mention to the Shot put team who all achieved 1st place. We look forward to 2019, as our team showed us that results can only get better with more hard work.

On the 3rd of February De Kuilen Primary School hosted their very popular Mother and Daughter morning. This year was bigger and better with 400 mothers and daughters attending. The theme this year was, Candy Floss. The tables were beautifully decorated and looked magical. We even had a candy floss machine making candy floss for the girls, filling the air with delicious scent.
All the mothers and daughters dressed according to the theme. Our special guest speaker was Bianca Welsh, a motivational speaker of Durbanville. This morning was filled with love, laughter and candy floss. The mothers and daughters also participated in a bingo game and pampering time. The mothers and daughters enjoyed dressing up and had lots of fun.

Die atlete van Laerskool Welgemoed het verlede Saterdag, die 17de Februarie, aan die Metro-Noord Atletiekkampioenskapsbyeenkoms deelgeneem. Veertien van ons atlete het daarin geslaag om deur te dring na die volgende rondte en sal die 24ste Februarie aan die WP-kampioenskapsbyeenkoms deelneem vir ‘n plek in die WPatletiekspan. Luca van Heerden en Enzo Clark graad 9-leerders is gekies vir die Protea kushengelspan (0.16) om deel te neem aan die einde van die jaar in Namibië. Luca is as die top 0.16-hengelaar aangewys, tydens die Nasionale toernooi wat in Januarie in die Weskus gehou is. Enzo het 4de geëindig. Dit is uitsonderlike prestasie. Baie geluk!

Like fish in the water Welgemoed Primary School hosted their inter-house swimming gala at Settlers High School on Monday, 29 January. It was a very hot day and the learners did not hesitate to get into the pool! Joshua Bannister was Junior Victor Ludorum, while Alet le Grange and Lara Smith shared the title of Junior Victrix Ludorum. Antonia Louw was named Senior Victrix Ludorum and Juan Boshoff won Senior Victor Ludorum. Juan also broke three records on the day. The house, Kommandeur, won the overall gala.

Trots op Nehan! Nehan Wessels, ‘n gr. 5-leerder van die Laerskool Eversdal, het aan die 17de PAMA (Pan Pacific Abacus & Mental Arithmetic Association of Taiwan Chamber of Commerce) Global International Championships in Groep B (kinders wat in 2008/2009 gebore is) in die Hilton Hotel in Sandton deelgeneem. Daar het byna 300 studente van 17 verskillende lande, onder andere Taiwan, Korea en Indië, met 109 net in Groep B, deelgeneem. Kinders wat hieraan wil deelneem, moet besonder vaardig wees in die oplossing van veelvuldige wiskundige vergelykings, insluitende vermenigvuldiging, verdeling, vierkantswortel en breuke. Hulle moet ses vraestelle aflê – drie met die abakus en drie daarsonder (hoofrekening). Nehan het onder die top 20% geëindig en is as een van ses kampioene gekroon! Hy is tans op die sesde kyu en sal graag wil vorder tot by DAN-vlak. A+Students is ‘n Japanese tegniek wat kinders leer om komplekse wiskundige probleme op te los met behulp van ‘n abakus (Soroban). Die grootste voordeel van die gebruik van ‘n abakus is die potensiaal om ‘n visuele stelsel te gebruik om baie groot getalle met hoofrekeninge te bereken.
Voetbal afrigtingsessie uit Philadelphia Mnr. Tim Gushue, hoofafrigter van die Shawnee Renegades in New Jersey, Philadelphia, VSA het Laerskool Eversdal op 19 Februarie besoek as deel van sy poging om skole in Afrika aan Amerikaanse voetbal bloot te stel. Hulle was op uitnodiging van mnr. Ferdi le Grange, wat vir die NFL-produksiespan werk, genooi. Mnr. Gushue en sy sewe helpers het ‘n kort afrigtingsessie met die leerders gehad, waarna hulle truie en balle aan die sestig 0.13 rugbyspelers wat betrokke was, uitgedeel het. Die seuns is blootgestel aan ‘n sport wat redelik buite hulle verwysingsraamwerk is en die hoogtepunt van die middag was die uitdeel van die truie.

Die Metro-Oos Onderwysdistrik het op 7 Februarie 2018 ‘n Matriektoekenningsaand gehou waartydens toekennings oorhandig is aan skole en leerders in die distrik vir besondere prestasies in die Nasionale Senior Sertifikaateksamen van 2017. Tydens hierdie glansgeleentheid, het Hoërskool Brackenfell drie toekennings ontvang in die vorm van sertifikate en trofeë. Die skool het vir die afgelope 3 jaar ‘n slaagsyfer van meer as 50% behaal, asook ‘n Baccalaureus Graadtoelating van meer as 50% in die Nasionale Senior Sertifikaateksamen. Mev Ansa Buenk, vakhoof Afrikaans Eerste Addisionele taal, het namens haar vakspan ‘n sertifikaat ontvang vir 100% slaagsyfer vir die afgelope 3 jaar. Guten Morgen! Jetzt gehen wir nach Deutschland! Elke jaar het leerders van die hoërskole Tygerberg, Stellenberg en DF Malan die geleentheid om deel te wees van die Kassel-Kapstadt uitruil. Dit behels ‘n 3-weke-lange kulturele uitruil na van die beeldskoonste plekke in Duitsland. This year Celeste Calitz, Nicola en Karla Hanekom, Jané Swart, Enja Keller, Christi Liebenberg en Amelia Kopper had the absolute pleasure of visiting the country around Christmas time, and it was truly a sight to behold.Germany is a very festive country, and everywhere twinkling fairy lights and large Christmas trees in city centres could be seen. The shops sold Christmas themed merchandise, even the everyday clothing shops. ons groep ongelukkig ‘n paar dae voor Kersfees moes terugkeer na Suid-Afrika, het ons definitief die ongelooflike ervaring van die Duitse Kerstyd beleef-kompleet met sneeu! Van die hoogtepunte vanjaar het ingesluit ‘n driedae- lange uitstappie na Berlyn,’n besoek aan die destydse Checkpoint Charlie, die Grimm broers se museum, en natuurlik al die wonderlike kersmarkte wat in elke dorp was. The exchange is primarily with Wilhelmsgymnasium in Kassel. This year we were a group of 25 students accompanied by Mrs Alta Loubser from DF Malan and Ms Rachelle Germishuys from Tygerberg. We attended school every day with our hosts and had to prepare a 5 min long PowerPoint-presentation about a special aspect of South Africa, e.g. the food, history, languages, etc. Ons besoek het egter die Duitse studente in die middel van ‘n toetsreeks gevang, dus het die
Suid-Afrikaners tydens hierdie toetsessies óf in die kafeteria gesit en wag, óf ‘n trem geneem na die dorp se kersmark toe. Duitsers is ongelooflik onafhanklik en dit is vir hulle niks snaaks as jy ‘n hele middag lank spontaan die strate invaar nie. The main idea of the exchange is to expose the German and South African cultures to each other, and thus we were tasked with preparing traditional South African treats for the school. At first we thought it would be only the staff who would taste, but as it turned out , the whole school wanted a bite! This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and I would recommend it to any student. Daar is geen spesifieke vereistes om te kan deelneem nie, maar ‘n deeglike kennis van Duits word sterk anbeveel, aangesien dit die gesproke taal is. Once you have gone, you won’t be the same person when you come back. You will return with a new perspective of yourself, and the world.
