hile browsing the internet, I came across braai.com, whose mission is to position National Braai Day as South Africa’s annual day of celebration on National Heritage Day. These guys have very helpfully shared a list of braai words – a braai dictionary –to help you sound cool around the fire: • aai: A braai in the summer, as in a braai without the brrr. • abbraaiviation: A very short braai. • abraaimowitz: A Jewish braai. • asskebab: Someone who makes a fool of him/herself at a braai. • aweh: A word used to express
a positive attitude – “hello”, “yes”, “good”. • baas: Afrikaans for boss, or the guy holding the braai tongs. • bak: A dish made from aluminium or stainless steel, used to store meat before and after it is braaied. Some braaiers use a glass bak, but there is a safety concern with this. If you’re eating straight off the braai, a bak is unnecessary. • barbie: Australian slang for barbeque. This is what you will learn to call a braai if you emigrate. • black wattle: Alien vegetation that uses a lot of water. This means that it’s good for the environment to chop it down and braai with it. It is a versatile braai wood, it burns easily when dry and makes decent coals. • blitz: Although this is a brand name, it is used as a universal term for firelighters of any kind. A frequently-asked question at many a braai, “Where is the blitz?” • blitzbraai: What happens when you light the blitz intending to braai, but end up getting blitzed. • BMW: Braai Met (With) Wheels. A braai with wheels that enable it to be moved around.
• boerie: Abbreviation for “boereworsroll”. • bok-dop-en-tjop: Term used for a bring-and-braai where you may bring your bok (babe), dop (drinks) and tjop (meat of choice). • bosberaad: A conference where you and your friends come together to discuss your strategy for National Braai Day. • Braai Hard: A 90’s action movie about a tough guy who braais a lot. • braai-jacker: A guy you really don’t want to invite but have to because he’s someone’s boyfriend. He claims to be a chef and manages to hijack the braai when the real braaier goois a dop. • braai tongs: The braai master’s weapon of choice. • braaiathon: A very long braai. • braaidsmaid: A woman performing a supporting role during a braai, for instance making salad, marinating meat, making braaibroodjies. Remember to make a date with your friends for 24 September! • For more braaicabulary, visit braai.com/braai-words.

GRILLED GRAPE FRUITS At the very start of spring the grape fruit is in full swing.
I started serving these zesty and yet slightly warming delicacies on cooler spring retreat mornings. There is something intrinsically cheerful about the smell of grapefruits that make them a welcome addition to a breakfast spread. Select ruby grapefruits for their vibrant colour and richer antioxidant content and use a grapefruit knife to cut into segments before grilling for easier eating. The sprinkle of brown sugar will melt into the grapefruit as it caramelizes, softening the bitterness and giving the surface a perfectly radiant glow. A joyous and juicy way to begin the day. WHAT YOU NEED: • 3 grapefruits • 2 tbls brown sugar (approx) WHAT TO DO: • Set the oven to grill and place a rack in the middle shelf.
• Cut grapefruits evenly in half, slice 2-3mm off each base to allow grapefruits to rest flat without rolling.
• Grill for about 10-15 minutes until flecked and speckled. Serve plain or with yoghurt. GET THIS BOOK!
• If using a grapefruit knife, carefully cut along the rim of the flesh before cutting into 4 or 8 segments. • Place grapefruits on a baking sheets, flesh side up,and sprinkle each half with approximately 1 tsp of brown sugar to taste.

For a lovely and very easy DIY, why not personalize your crockery with a stamp or monogram?
YOU WILL NEED: • Ceramic or porcelain crockery • Stamp • Ink and pad • CPG (Ceramic, Porcelain, Glass) Podge The crockery used in this DIY was bought on sale for next to nothing and combined with a favourite crown stamp, they are going to revolutionize our dinner parties!
On glazed surfaces this is tricky but if you’re gentle you will get it done without difficulty. Don’t stress if you have a bit missing on a little section or get it smudged – the overall look will be slightly distressed and simply adds to the charm of the piece.
3. After it has dried properly you can glaze it with a couple of layers podge, making sure it dries thoroughly between layers. Bake your bowl, plate or mug for 60 minutes on 90 degrees Celsius with the door of the oven slightly open. Different makes of glaze
1. Simply dab your stamp on the ink pad and test on paper to see if you need to dab more or less ink on it to get the desired effect.

Eversdal hockey players bring home the silverware Four of Eversdal Primary School’s Hockey players recently brought medals home. Lynda Portelli (second from left) captained WP Durbell Hockey team on their Regional Tour to East London from 27th to 30th June. There were eleven teams participating from the southern regions. Lynda’s team ended in 3rd place and received bronze medals. Three other Eversdal learners participated in the WP Interzonal Tournament (North WP, South WP and

There were 5 teams in the girls’ and boys’ leagues respectively. Mire’s team ended in first place in the boys’ tournament and received gold medals. Jack and Henju received silver medals for finishing in second place in the boys’ tournament.
By Eversdal beteken Augustusmaand DAMUS .
The Netball games had to be postponed due to the wet weather, but the girls eventually enjoyed a lovely game.

On Saturday, 23 August, we held our annual Winter Sports Day against Table View. The Table View staff members arrived bright and early, and were treated to hearty breakfast. And then, it was “Game On”! Rugby, Netball and Hockey Teams from U 8’s to the U12’s gave it their all. But the most furiously contested games were most
definitely the First Teams. After all, pride was at stake. Cross country was also included into the event this year and the run on the Friday was well attended. It was a most enjoyable day indeed and wonderful opportunity for parents to see their children participating.

DF Malan het skoonskip gemaak by hokkie.

Gaming On the 23rd and 24th of August Fairmont High School, hosted the MSSA Western Province LAN Championships. It was the first E-Sports championship that Fairmont High School hosted and we hope it is the first of many more championships. Earlier this year Fairmont High School started a gaming society and throughout the middle of the year they affiliated with the MSSA (Mind Sport South Africa). Being affiliated with the MSSA enabled any of our learners to participate in the Competition. At the moment there are 24 registered players from Fairmont High School who participated. Although we expected a bigger turnout, the competition lasted over 2 days.
