AWSUMCelebrity Interview
V: Jy is wêreldwyd bekend as topmodel. A: Pasella se vervaardiger het my in 2007 gevra of ek sou belangstel in TV-aanbieding. Watter boer sou jy sê is AWSUM?

AWSUM NEWS NOVEMBER 2016
V: Wat is jou raad vir eerste afsprake? Tel eerste indrukke? V: Jou man, Ernst Joubert, was bekend as rugbyspeler. Wat doen hy deesdae? A: Hy is Head of Operations by Stellenbosch Academy of Sport Rugby Institute.

to encourage your children to live up to their potential
No one said being a parent was easy. It doesn’t come with an instruction book. One minute you are footloose and fancy free; the next moment you have the responsibility of nurturing your precious child. As one parent put it, ‘Do they ever stop needing you?’ Involved, loving, supportive parenting pays off by creating a happier, more confident child who is more likely to live up to their potential. Follow these tips on how parents can encourage their children to live up to their full potential academically, in the fields that interest and accommodate them best.
1. Recognise your child’s uniqueness
Parents tend to expect too much. Rather give your children the space to try different activities and to explore various careers in order to discover the best fit for them. Support their choice – one child may excel in mathematics, while another may prefer languages and debate.
2. Attend career fairs and pay for extra lessons
Attend career fairs to establish what career options are open to your child. This is an important step in helping your child determine the best subject choices in Grade 9, as certain careers require you to take specific subjects at school.
3. Discipline starts with young children
It is too late to introduce discipline when children are teenagers; they are already rebellious by then! Provide clear boundaries for acceptable behaviour and help them to take responsibility. If they want special presents, make them earn it – with good grades and chores around the house.
4. Save
Save what you can towards your child’s education. The earlier you start, the better. Every bit helps.
5. Pay for extra lessons
If you cannot afford to send your child to university, save to pay for extra lessons. This is money well spent, as their marks will improve, and as will their chances of securing a bursary.
6. Love and appreciate them
It all comes down to love. Encourage and appreciate them.

Health & Wellbeing Water-wise diabetics
Water is of vital importance for diabetics
More than three-quarters of deaths in Africa due to diabetes are in people under 60. In developing countries, including South Africa, less than half of people with diabetes are diagnosed.1 Whilst type 1 diabetes is related to genetics, the most prevalent form, type 2, is a direct result of an unhealthy lifestyle and poor food choices. Food plays a vital role in reducing the risks of type 2 diabetes, but equally so, what we drink can be a ticking time bomb if not managed correctly. Popular high-sugar drinks such as sodas, iced teas and fruit juices contain an unhealthy amount of sugar, and much debate rages around the ‘sugar-free’ variations thereof. Water is always the best option, as it won’t raise your blood sugar levels and helps the body eliminate excess glucose through urine. Women should drink approximately eight glasses of water a day and men up to 10. People who drink two cups or less of water a day were 30 percent more likely to have high blood sugar than those who drank more than that daily.2 The reason for this is due to a hormone called vasopressin, which helps the body regulate hydration. When a person is dehydrated, vasopressin stimulates the liver to produce more blood sugar.
Eight to 10 glasses of water a day is a tall order, especially if water doesn’t appeal to you, so how can you manage to maintain hydration whist eliminating the bland and avoiding sugars? • Infuse water with fresh fruit such as lemon, lime or orange or herbs such as mint, basil or ginger. • Carbonated water can improve the taste, as the bubbles bring to the surface the flavour and aroma of the drink. Scientists have also found an enzyme on the sour receptors of our tongues called Carbonic Anhydrase 4 (CA-IV). The bubbles stimulate the sour buds and the somatosensory system. The dual activation on the buds and the nerves creates a pleasurable sensation. • Mash berries such as blueberries, raspberries or cranberries and add carbonated water. • Refrigerate stock from boiling vegetables for a refreshing, vitamin-packed drink. • Caffeine-free teas such as Rooibos, green, chamomile or peppermint make for drinking pleasure both warm and iced.

POTCHEFSTROOM HIGH SCHOOL FOR BOYS (t) 018 294 5330 (e) pbhs@iafrica.com 2017 School and House Leaders New head boy of both the school and of Buxton House, Kabelo Phalatsi, talked about his leadership roles: “It is an enormous responsibility to be given the leadership of Potch Boys’ High with its strong and rich history that dates all the way from 1905. Today I still feel the sense of privilege I felt on my first day of Grade 8, when my friends and I were allowed to call ourselves College gentlemen, with Collegian hearts. “It is my vision as the head boy of the school and of Buxton for 2017 to lead younger Collegians and to teach them the way of College gentlemen; how to embrace the College spirit; to understand the principles of being a member of this school – and how to live by them. “I would like to see Boys’ High flourish in every field in which we participate and to make strides towards having the broader community witness our culture of respect, commitment and service. When they start giving us feedback about our students, I know, I would have achieved my aim. This won’t be for a month; or for the first term. It will be my work for the entire year, so that my classmates and I can leave behind a legacy: one that says, ‘We were the year that made the difference.’ “
Joey Dyofile (head boy of Barnard).

Discipline is the answer for all your maths problems! It took Sheila Labuschagne, a full-time mathematics teacher at Potch Boys High, only a little more than two years to finish her Masters Degree in Mathematics. She received the degree at the graduation ceremony of the Northwest University (NWU) in October. She did this for the pure joy of getting an answer for a question and to motivate her colleagues and the children at the school. Sheila explains that there are three groups of people working with maths: the mathematicians that discover the new maths, the education people working with how maths is educated, and the teachers that teaches maths. She always wondered: do they share their experiences? Do they talk to each other and give feedback on their experiences? Needless to say: the result was inevitable ... they do not talk to each other. This is a shame, says Sheila. A lot of research is done and because it isn’t used, it sometimes just goes to waste. Her research report is titled: Secondary School Teaching: Exploring the perspective of South African Research Mathematicians. She hopes that this report will not be one of the fruitless research reports, but used by fellow academics. Sheila revealed another interesting point: to be good in maths, you have to be very disciplined. No matter what culture or colour you are – a hard, disciplined worker is the only one that will “understand” and succeed in maths. In her free time, Sheila likes hiking and walking, and she has also motivated some of the learners at the school to do the Park Run with her on a Saturday morning. She is married to a maths researcher at the NWU, Professor Louis Labuschagne. They have three sons: an engineer, a pharmacy masters student and a BSc, physics and maths student. When asked if she will continue her study, she first said: No! But while talking you realise she has another question pending: How to teach a disciplined subject in an undisciplined environment?
